The main objective of this research is to analyze the immaterial subjects that use convergent mobile devices. In order to understand the topic, we presented a historical background of the means of communication, starting it with the telegraph. Thus, we studied the media evolution and also the technological transformations that the telephone has undergone until the smartphone creation. Later, we presented social- cultural as well as political-economic changes trigged from postmodernity and ciberculture. Those reflections facilitated the investigation of the immaterial production of the subjects that used the smartphones. So, the concepts of empire, crowd and material work were the bases for this research. The methodology applied was the virtual ethnography used to analyze the impacts caused by smartphones in seven subjects’ immaterial work. In order to collect data, semi-open questionnaires and non-structured interviews were applied about the daily use of those types of digital technologies – this information was taken from MSN and SKYPE as well as the diary board annotations. We considered valid the virtual ethnography to carry out a research on ciberculture, since it allows the observations about the analyzed subjects as well as the description of the investigated phenomena. Besides, we also could verify that the Empire biopower, through the convergent mobile devices as smartphones, interfere with the subjects’ immaterial work.

Nayane Monteiro.pdf: 5093444 bytes, checksum: e84f53f53e26c109f5282a11307bea65 (MD5) / The movement of connectivity observed worldwide affects not only the information or communication, but also the economic operation and consumer relations. The rapid spread of
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) helps connect individuals and those in the consumer condition, become increasingly active, informed and demanding. It is
noteworthy that every day individuals are invited to consume something, whether a product, service or idea, aiming to satisfy a need or a desire. Apprehending that consumption is the result of decisions and understand consumer behavior requires the appreciation of how individuals make their purchase and consumption decisions. For the individual decides to consume something, it goes through a series of steps called Decision-Purchase Process or Consumer Decision Process (CDP). Thus, the overall objective of this work is to study the influences that the smartphone has on Consumer Decision Process. The study is descriptive and quantitative, which used a questionnaire as a data collection instrument. Valid final
sample of 728 individuals, the majority of respondents were located in Fortaleza / CE. For data analysis, we used factor analysis and correlation of Spearman. The analysis revealed that there are factors present in each construct that concentrate the study variables and help to better understand the influences of mobile. It was concluded that the research instrument could measure the influence of smartphone use in stage Post-Purchase Evaluation, Disposal and consumption, but was insufficient to assess such influence in stages need-recognition, search information, evaluation of alternatives and purchase. The contribution of the study is to
broaden the knowledge of consumer behavior theory, especially with regard to mobile devices and smartphones, since such devices were sprayed in contemporary society.

Methodological issues of quantifying everyday memory phenomena with paper and electronic diariesLaughland, Andrew January 2017 (has links)
Capturing life as it is lived is an important goal in psychology, and diary methods are commonly used for this purpose. They capture events near the time of their occurrence and are less prone to retrospective biases associated with questionnaire, interview and survey methods. However, participants in diary studies must remember to carry the diary with them, and find it convenient to make entries in timely fashion. New approaches, replacing paper diaries with technology (e.g. personal digital assistants), can overcome forgetting to make entries and retrospective filling of data. However, until recently technology had its own problems (e.g. unreliability and cost of devices, the need for training, biases of technical competence, etc.). The research described in this dissertation arose from the anticipation that the rapid, worldwide growth of smartphone ownership would overcome many of these limitations since participant-owned smartphone diaries can eliminate associated costs and facilitate increased rates of compliance. Six diary studies were conducted on two transient cognitive phenomena. Initially, a smartphone app was developed and compared with a paper diary in the study of involuntary autobiographical memories. Although participants in the smartphone-diary condition demonstrated significantly better compliance than those in the paper-diary condition by reliably carrying their smartphones, and promptly completing diary entries in the app, they recorded significantly fewer events than paper diary users. To test that this unexpected finding was not specific to involuntary autobiographical memories, the method was tested with everyday memory failures, and the same unexpected finding was obtained. Further studies manipulated the length of diary-keeping period and demonstrated a diary entry rate reduction effect with longer diary keeping periods, an effect seen in both paper- and participant-owned smartphone-diaries. For involuntary autobiographical memories, the effect was demonstrated by comparing 1-day and 7-day diaries, and also by using a 30-40 minutelong digital audio recording method. With everyday memory failures, the effect was demonstrated by comparing 7-day and 28-day diaries. The audio recording method was used to capture involuntary autobiographical memories while driving. It was also used on a campus walk and compared with a 1-day paper diary within-subjects, finding a higher rate of recording in the shorter period, and consistency of memory counts across two modes of recording. This novel audio-recording method facilitated much more detailed analysis of involuntary memory cues and chaining and enabled the evaluation of potential instances of priming. Finally, a telephone and postal-based diary study of everyday memory failures demonstrated the feasibility of recruitment and measurement of participants remotely, which can be particularly useful with older adults. Taken together, the results of this research make a significant methodological contribution to research on transient everyday cognitive phenomena by showing that (1) care is needed when using participant-owned smartphone diaries, (2) paper diaries may be more reliable than currently given credit, and (3) diary-recording periods can be substantially reduced without compromising the quantity and the quality of data obtained. In addition, results increase our theoretical understanding of two specific phenomena studied in this dissertation: involuntary autobiographical memories and everyday memory failures. The findings indicate that involuntary memories are much more frequent than previously thought, may represent a stable characteristic of a person and, in addition to immediately present cues, can be elicited by internal memory chaining process and more distant priming of events and thoughts. Finally, the absence of age effects in the frequency and nature of recorded everyday memory failures, together with significant negative age effects in laboratory tests of memory and cognition, is a novel finding that has significant implications for research on cognitive ageing.

The increase in the use of smartphones allowed new forms of interaction between the State and society, which includes the provision of mobile solutions for the exercise of citizenship in a context of ubiquitous communication. The interaction between government and citizen through mobile devices and networks is part of the mobile government, or m-gov, which can be understood as an extension of e-government. One of the practices of m-government is the use of public interest mobile apps - softwares designed to perform specific tasks. In the case of public interest apps, in general, these tasks are linked to access to information, public services or political participation. The research aimed to identify limits and possibilities in the use of these applications for the promotion of citizenship in Brazil in three dimensions, membership, the exercise of rights and duties and participation. For that, the tools available in the Federal Government's Application Guide and the related public policies were analyzed. It was noticed that although the applications made available to citizens have technical consistency and high potential for interactivity, the tools are little used to offer practical solutions to citizens and possibilities for political participation. The results point to the need to direct the conception and production of these tools for the promotion of citizenship, which may also depend on an improvement in the governance of brazilian e-government.

A Novel ‘Food Lists’ App to Promote Weight Loss, Improve Diet Quality, and Strengthen Diet Adherence: the Foodmindr StudyJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: Background: Smartphone diet tracking applications (apps) are increasing in popularity but may not adequately address the important concerns of proper intake and of diet quality. Two novel weight loss apps were designed based on the popular dietary frameworks: MyPlate and FoodLists. MyPlate, the dietary guidelines put forth by the U.S. government, encourages a balanced diet from five primary food groups, but does not specify intake limits. The Food Lists set upper intake limits on all food groups except vegetables, and these guidelines extend to include fats, sweets, and alcohol.
Objective: The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to determine whether adherence to a weight loss app providing intake limits and more food group detail (the Food Lists app) facilitated more weight loss and better diet quality than adherence to a weight loss app based on the MyPlate platform. An additional objective was to examine whether higher app adherence would lead to greater weight loss.
Design: Thirty seven adults from a campus population were recruited, randomized, and instructed to follow either the Food Lists app (N=20) or the MyPlate app (N=17) for eight weeks. Subjects received one 15 minute session of diet and app training at baseline, and their use of the app was tracked daily. Body mass was measured at baseline and post-test.
Participants/setting: Healthy adults from a university campus population in downtown Phoenix, Arizona with BMI 24 to 40, medically stable, and who owned a smartphone.
Main outcome measures: Outcome measures included weight change, days of adherence, and diet quality change. Secondary measures included BMI, fat %, and waist circumference.
Statistical analysis: Descriptive statistics (means and standard errors); Repeated measures ANOVAs analyzing weight, diet quality, and BMI; Pearson and Spearman correlations analyzing adherence and weight loss.
Results: Repeated measures ANOVAs and correlations revealed no significant mean differences in primary outcome variables of weight loss, adherence, or diet quality (P=0.140; P=0.790; P=0.278). However, there was a significant mean reduction of BMI favoring the group using the Food Lists app (P=0.041).
Conclusion: The findings strengthen the idea that intake limits and food group detail may be associated with weight loss. Further investigation is warranted to determine whether longer use of the Food Lists app can produce more significant dieting successes and encourage healthier behavioral outcomes. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Nutrition 2016

Previous issue date: 2017-02-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / The objective of this work is to analyze the current relationship that emerges from the coupling between human beings and the technological devices related to listening, considering changes that occur in these devices mainly from the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, such as miniaturization and proliferation. For the proposed analysis, we map the term technology, which reveals that there is a set of dynamic and non-linear forces acting behind each of these devices, opening a field for dialogical interactions between human and machine. We also map out the theories of listening that emerged in the twentieth century that spring from this dialogical relationship with technology or that take it into account in order to establish a field for thinking about what is at stake in these theories. We conclude the study with an analysis on the relationship between the listening and one of the most established sound devices currently: the smartphone.

The objective of this research is to investigate the use of Matemática app in smartphones through the study of concepts related to function in classrooms. Hence, the research question that guided the data production and the development of this research is: What are the potentialities through the use of smartphones in classroom as function`s concepts are studied? Looking for answers to this question and to achieve the objective of this research, I utilized procedures from qualitative Methodology, based of Constructionism and Investigative Activities. I elaborated activities to be developed through Matemática app in ninth year of elementary education public school classroom in Limeira (SP), aiming the construction of function concepts through the exploration of graphics of linear function and quadratic function. Data source of this research were: classrooms audio record, questionnaire answers and interview carried out with one teacher. In data analysis, I tried to look at potentialities of smartphone use in classroom, through the identification of constructionism dimensions and characteristics of Investigative Activities. It was identified that, through the app, students were able to explore various graphics, elaborating and testing conjectures, what helped them to generalize properties of the functions studied in classroom. Besides, I identified that the role of the teacher in classroom was fundamental as the teacher allowed the students to get their conclusions not previously giving them the answer as the lesson was being carried out. Thus, in this research context, I evidence potentialities of smartphone use in classroom such as: in order to provide mathematical discussion toward the function`s content, keep up with graphs of functions and tables of values, allow the study of previous years contents and to provide interaction between peers and between students and teachers.

iPhone Applications and Improvement in Weight and Health Parameters: A Randomized Controlled TrialJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: Dietary counseling from a registered dietitian has been shown in previous studies to aid in weight loss for those receiving counseling. With the increasing use of smartphone diet/weight loss applications (app), this study sought to investigate if an iPhone diet app providing feedback from a registered dietitian improved weight loss and bio-markers of health. Twenty-four healthy adults who owned iPhones (BMI > 24 kg/m2) completed this trial. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three app groups: the MyDietitian app with daily feedback from a registered dietitian (n=7), the MyDietitian app without feedback (n=7), and the MyPlate feedback control app (n=10). Participants used their respective diet apps daily for 8-weeks while their weight loss, adherence to self-monitoring, blood bio-markers of health, and physical activity were monitored. All of the groups had a significant reduction in waist and hip circumference (p<0.001), a reduction in A1c (p=0.002), an increase in HDL cholesterol levels (p=0.012), and a reduction in calories consumed (p=0.022) over the duration of the trial. Adherence to diet monitoring via the apps did not differ between groups during the study. Body weight did not change during the study for any groups. However, when the participants were divided into low (<50% of days) or high adherence (>50% of days) groups, irrespective of study group, the high adherence group had a significant reduction in weight when compared to the low adherence group (p=0.046). These data suggest that diet apps may be useful tools for self-monitoring and even weight loss, but that the value appears to be the self-monitoring process and not the app specifically. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.
