Use of Social Media by Students in Denmark

Velkova, Ekaterina Valentinova January 2015 (has links)
The use of social media and its accessibility through smartphones is becoming a more and more researched topic in the field of ICT. In relation to this, the current study attempts to shed light on the general use of social media, Facebook in particular, by youth in Danish context and pays attention to how the accessibility to this media through smartphones affects the interaction between individuals when being together. The research finishes with three conceptual models which goal is to provide future design implications of the studied ICTs in a way that closer meets the user needs and requirements. The models are – one related to Facebook, one general application, and one related to supporting many-to-many communication. The study is of interpretative nature, based on qualitative research approach with a main method for data collection being qualitative semi-structured interviews. There were 8 interviews performed – 3 with students at a secondary school in Odense, Denmark, and the rest with students at the university in the same town. In this way an understanding of the use patterns and issues experienced by the different age groups was attempted. Furthermore, the study contributes with findings to certain discrepancies identified in the current literature, such as the need for context-aware devices, type of friends on Facebook and others. Finally, due to the limited source for data collection, the thesis does not claim for generalizability, but it should be viewed as a small contribution to the studies related to Facebook, particularly applicable within a Danish context.

Collaborative statistics collection during live sportsevents / Kollaborativ och samtidig statistikinsamling för sportevenemang

Johansson, Peter January 2013 (has links)
Gathering statistics in sports is a tool to provide useful information to different parties such as trainers, club executives and spectators. They have in some instances also become mandatoryas a part of a national association. In order to provide a digital tool to improve the gathering for one such club, a web-based prototype was developed. This prototype was based on specifications outlined by an ice hockey club in the Swedish Allsvenskan division and on previous research on mobile devices. It was tested in two iterations. The result of the tests indicates that a digital, platform independent software not only helps greatly reduce the workload but also provides new abilities and benefits for the clubs.

How Transportation Network Companies Could Replace Public Transportation in the United States

Kessler, Matthew L. 01 November 2017 (has links)
The quantity of cell phone applications or mobile apps have seen an upsurge at an exponential rate in under a decade. Many have been created for a variety of industries, including transportation. The advent and subsequent commercialized implementation of near-instant transport by a middleman-type of app is now known as a Transportation Network Company or TNC. Examples of the more renowned TNCs are Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. In recent years, TNCs have cultivated a tremendous following, to the degree of taxicab desertion. Moreover, the massive success of TNCs led to expansion of its capacities into public transportation. The TNC’s expeditious popularity has garnered the attention of government and transit agencies. Without fail, TNCs can complement, supplement or compete with transit. However, sparsely has there been any deep discussion about a TNC potentially supplanting transit. The aim of this paper is to show how TNCs could replace public transportation in the United States if subsidized at the same level of transit agencies. Austin, Texas was analyzed as the case study city. A comparison of subsidization between Austin’s transit agency: Cap Metro, the local TNCs, and on a national aggregate level was conducted. The evidence herein clearly shows that TNCs are highly competitive when in revenue service operating at full capacity, potentially replacing public transportation.

Development of a smart-phone based augmented reality view application for driver assistance systems

Lotankar, Akshay Naresh 28 September 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The goal of this thesis is to develop a smartphone application for augmented reality view; it is an initial attempt to realize a driver assistance functionality using just a smartphone and an external lens. Initially it depicts a brief analysis about the most feasible development technologies for mobile application development, selecting a proper lens and positioning of the smartphone in the car. Later, it discusses the strategies for real-time object detection using OpenCV; the video frames are processed using the strategies to find patterns in the videos. Different techniques like Hough-line transform, watershed, contour detection, color segmentation, color thresholding and HAAR cascades are implemented and compared in terms of real time detection of the desired objects. Then a unified algorithm is implemented for the given scenario which overcomes the challenges faced during the conceptualization phase. Finally, the results are depicted with the snapshots of the real time detection done from the smartphone and then evaluated against the vision of the application and the achieved tasks. This thesis is concluded by stating the prospects of this mobile application in the future.

Valet av smartphone : En kvalitativ studie om vad som motiverar konsumentbeteendet / The choice to smartphone : A qualitative study on what motivates the consumer behavior

Jangiri, Solin, Syed, Sagiba January 2017 (has links)
Background: In today's society, not only is the focus on the physical product but also on the behavior of the consumer and the value of a brand. Brands carry symbolic values that consumers use to identify themselves and create communities, also known as Brand communities. Today, consumers are less affected by advertising and product placements and as a result, marketers are constantly working to interpret consumers and what motivates the consumer behavior. Purpose: The aim of the study is to investigate the underlying factors which motivate consumers to choose a smartphone. Issues: What factors motivate the customer when they choose to buy a smartphone? Which of these factors are dominant for the customer? How does the dominant factor affect the consumer? Method: The study is based on a qualitative research strategy. The methodological approaches of the study constitutes a relationship between theory and practice and, as a consequence, the deductive approach has been selected. The study has applied source triangulation through two interviews with a focus group consisting of eight people and supplemented with three telephone interviews with different sales representatives. Conclusions: The conclusion shows that all cultural, social and psychological factors motivate consumers to choose a smartphone. However, the main influencing factor is consumers friends who belong to the category of social factors. Consumer friends introduce the consumer for new products, brands and trends. Among the social factors we also find status and roles. The smartphone is associated with certain values as exclusivity and can be a tool for achieving a certain status or living up to a certain role. This then creates preferences and associations of the consumer that drives it to choose a smartphone.

Englund, Petra January 2017 (has links)
Mobiltelefonens mångfacettering erbjuder många möjligheter inom studier, men även flera utmaningar.

Development and Evaluation of a BlackBerry-based Wearable Mobility Monitoring System

Wu, Hui Hsien January 2012 (has links)
A Wearable Mobility Monitoring System (WMMS) can be an advantageous device for rehabilitation decision-making. This thesis presents the design and evaluation of a proof-of-concept WMMS that uses the BlackBerry Smartphone platform. A Java program was developed for the BlackBerry 9550, using the integrated tri-axial accelerometer, Global Positioning System sensor (GPS), CMOS digital video camera, and timer to identify change-of-state (CoS) among static states, dynamic states, small activity of daily living (ADL) movements, and car riding. Static states included sitting, lying, standing, and taking an elevator. Dynamic states included walking on level ground, walking on stairs, and walking on a ramp. Small activity of daily living movements included bathroom activities, working in the kitchen, and meal preparation. Following feature extraction from the sensor data, two decision trees were used to distinguish CoS and mobility activities. CoS identification subsequently triggered video recording for improved mobility context analysis during post-processing.
