Flexible User Interface - FLUSI

Conrad, Jan January 2006 (has links)
The cellular phone network has been increasing rapidly during the last years. For many people the mobile phone has become an every day gadget with a wide performance and functional range. The usage of technologies like GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE and UMTS as well as the bandwidth of networks and consequently the connectivity of the phones has also increased persistently. Coming along with that, three technologies, which are ubiquitous or pervasive computing, mobile and wireless networks and location-based technologies, are making rapid progress. The aim of this thesis is to offer an architecture for a location-based user interface in the intersection of the three technologies mentioned above. The system should work with a minimum of special hardware requirement. Not to overload the user with information, the user interface should be adaptable, context-aware and location-based. The context-data should remain extendible and adaptable.

Oliveira, Annelore Spieker de January 2007 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to analyze the immaterial subjects that use convergent mobile devices. In order to understand the topic, we presented a historical background of the means of communication, starting it with the telegraph. Thus, we studied the media evolution and also the technological transformations that the telephone has undergone until the smartphone creation. Later, we presented social- cultural as well as political-economic changes trigged from postmodernity and ciberculture. Those reflections facilitated the investigation of the immaterial production of the subjects that used the smartphones. So, the concepts of empire, crowd and material work were the bases for this research. The methodology applied was the virtual ethnography used to analyze the impacts caused by smartphones in seven subjects’ immaterial work. In order to collect data, semi-open questionnaires and non-structured interviews were applied about the daily use of those types of digital technologies – this information was taken from MSN and SKYPE as well as the diary board annotations. We considered valid the virtual ethnography to carry out a research on ciberculture, since it allows the observations about the analyzed subjects as well as the description of the investigated phenomena. Besides, we also could verify that the Empire biopower, through the convergent mobile devices as smartphones, interfere with the subjects’ immaterial work.

This work presents the approach of a mobile dose prediction system for NPP emergencies with nuclear material release. The objective is to provide extra support to field teams decisions when plant information systems are not available. However, predicting doses due to atmospheric dispersion of radionuclide generally requires execution of complex and computationally intensive physical models. In order to allow such predictions to be made by using limited computational resources such as mobile phones, it is proposed the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) previously trained (offline) with data generated by precise simulations using the NPP atmospheric dispersion system. Typical situations for each postulated accident and respective source terms, as well as a wide range of meteorological conditions have been considered. As a first step, several ANN architectures have been investigated in order to evaluate their ability for dose prediction in hypothetical scenarios in the vicinity of CNAAA Brazilian NPP, in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. As a result, good generalization and a correlation coefficient of 0.99 was achieved for a validation data set (untrained patterns). Then, selected ANNs have been coded in Java programming language to run as an Android application aimed to plot the spatial dose distribution into a map. In this work, the general architecture of the proposed system is described; numerical results and comparisons between investigated ANN architectures are discussed; performance and limitations of running the Application into a commercial mobile phone are evaluated and possible improvements and future works are pointed.

ZoneDeals! : An innovative way of providing offers

Skaland Bugge, Morten January 2013 (has links)
The project described in this thesis implements a position based offer system that allows the user to receive offers when they enter zonesspecified in a database. The goals associated with this project were: to find and evaluate products with similar functionalities and to design and implement a working prototype. The system consists of four main parts, a smartphone, a server, a website, and a billing system. The smartphone is based upon the Android operating system and uses the global positioning system (GPS) to track its position. The server is the brain of the system and all the other devices communicate through it.The server runs JBoss and has a connection to an Oracle database through hibernate. JavaServer Pages (JSP) is used by the server to generate the website and to connect the Java methods with the HTML-forms at the website. User privacy is one aspect that has been investigated in relation to this project. The user should have options to choose the information that is to be shared and stored. When storing private information it is important to secure the information, preferably by encryption and a log in system. A small program was developed to test the scalability of the server and the result showed that the server could cope with 1000 simultaneous users polling the server with a 5 second interval. This will, however, increase several times when a dedicated server machine is used. Today there is no other product at the market that has a connection to the billing system; this means that this product will have a huge advantage and market potential compared to similar products.

Context based reminder system Supporting persons using Smartphone accelerometer data

Khan, Nisar, Khan, Fazlullah January 2013 (has links)
Context: Sensor base data is being used for many purposes in designing various memory aid systems for cognitive impaired people. Different memory aids or reminder systems are based on various technologies such as NFC, accelerometer, GPS and gyroscope. Smart phones are equipped with such sensors and can be used for assistance of persons. In this study we use smart phone sensors in order to design a context aware reminder system to assist cognitive impaired people. Objectives: Different reminder systems, needs for such systems, technologies and models used to build a reminder system are identified in this research work. Ultimate goal of the study is to assist cognitive people in their daily life activities, using available embedded technologies of smart phones. Following objectives were set to achieve the goal of the thesis work: • What are reminder systems and why do we need such systems? • What are the different kinds of technologies reported in literature for reminder systems? • What are the issues encountered by cognitive impaired/elderly people while performing their daily life activities? • How to design and implement context aware reminder system using Smartphone embedded sensors? Methods: Mix method approach is used to carry out this study. Literature review is conducted based on the notion of systematic review. Data is collected through survey and interviews, conducted in south Sweden municipality, to analyze and indentify daily life issues and problems of cognitive people. Experiments are performed in real environment to test and verify our application. We evaluate the performance of activity recognition algorithm, implemented in the application, using Weka. Results: Various reminder systems, their needs and underlined technologies are identified and reported. Activities of daily living and issues addressed by these reminder systems are also identified. Survey and interviews help us to identify issues and problems faced by cognitive impaired/elderly while performing their daily life activities. For example, we find out that cognitive people not only forget their daily life activities but also during performing these activities. Conclusions: Many proposed models in literature are related to each other and use similar sensor based data from various technologies. Based on literature review, survey and interviews we have concluded that context based reminder system is essential for cognitive disabled people. It leads us to design a context based reminder system for android based smart phones. The preliminary tests help us to verify our model but there is absolute need for further empirical verification and validation.

Android Elastic Service Execution and Evaluation

Heidari, Ramin January 2013 (has links)
Context. Mobile devices recently have attained huge popularity in people’s life. During recent years, there have been many attempts for proposing several approaches to delegate and execute the computing intensive part of the mobile applications on more powerful remote servers due to shortage of resources on mobile devices. However, there are still research challenges in this area regarding the models as well as principles that govern circumstances of executing a part of mobile application remotely on a server along with effects of execution on the smartphone resources. Objectives. The aim behind conducting this research is to propose a model for executing the service component of an Android application on the remote server. This study exploits the enhancement of Android operating system functionality to execute services components on a remote powerful machine. It reports the model as well as the enhancements to achieve this purpose. Additionally, an experiment is conducted to realize what factors rule to execute a computation locally on mobile device or offload it to be executed on a remote machine. Methods. Two research methodologies have been used in preforming this research; Case study and controlled experiment. In the case study we investigates feasibility of functionality enhancement in Android operating system to run service components of Android applications on a remote server. We propose a new model for this purpose and motivate it by several different resources such as journal and conference papers and the Android developer site. A prototype of the model is implemented in order to put into use in the next part of our study. Second, a controlled experiment is conducted on the outcome prototype of the case study to explore the principles that governs executing the service component of Android application on a remote powerful machines and the affection of this execution on the mobile resources. Results. A Model for executing the service component of Android application on a powerful remote server is proposed. Also, a prototype implemented according to the Model. The effects of executing Android service components in a remote machine on energy consumption as well as performance of a smartphone are investigated. Moreover, we examined when would be beneficial to offload an intensive computation in order to be executed on the remote server. Conclusions. We conclude that it’s applicable to enhance the Android OS to execute service component of an Android application on a remote server. Also, We conclude that there is a strong coloration between amount of payload and computation of data that require to be executed on a remote server. Basically, offloading the computation is beneficial when there is a large amount of computation with small amount of communication and payload. Furthermore we conclude that the execution time for the intensive computations drastically increase when it’s executed on the server but for less computation data the performance is better when the execution is on the smartphone. Besides that, we express that the energy consumption on the smartphone growth gradually when the payload passes over a particular size.

Linderoth, Erik January 2017 (has links)
Undersökningen fick in svar från 919 unika respondenter i olika åldrar.

Utilising accelerometer and gyroscope in smartphone to detect incidents on a test track for cars

Holst, Carl-Johan January 2017 (has links)
Every smartphone today includes an accelerometer. An accelerometer works by detecting acceleration affecting the device, meaning it can be used to identify incidents such as collisions at a relatively high speed where large spikes of acceleration often occur.A gyroscope on the other hand is not as common as the accelerometer but it does exists in most newer phones. Gyroscopes can detect rotations around an arbitrary axis and as such can be used to detect critical rotations. This thesis work will present an algorithm for utilising the accelerometer and gyroscope in a smartphone to detect incidents occurring on a test track for cars.

Olsson, Erik January 2016 (has links)

Designing a User Interface for Smartphones. A Balance Between the Pragmatic and the Hedonic Dimension of Usability : A Case Study

Andrzejewski, Jakub January 2004 (has links)
Recent research in the usability engineering field tends to emphasize, somewhat neglected, the need of incorporating the joy-of-use factor (the hedonic dimension of usability) into the design of user interfaces. However such design decisions have to be applied with care and proper modesty as they may diminish the product’s overall quality of use. Notions of pleasure and joy are non-task related and partially incompatible with pragmatic usability qualities hence achieving a proper balance is essential. The thesis explores the question of how to establish a balance between pragmatic and hedonic dimensions of usability and whether it is possible to design a user interface which is both highly usable and enjoyable. In order to address these questions a case study was performed, which required further development of an existing prototype, the Zenterio Halfpipe Desktop; an innovative, patented, cross-platform user interface. To achieve high product usability, principles of Human-Computer Interaction and User-Centered Design were applied. The results of the study suggest that ensuring a high level of both aspects of usability: the pragmatic values (such as simplicity or controllability) as well as the hedonic values (such as originality or innovativeness), can result in a product which is perceived as highly usable and fun-to-use. The practical application of involving the joy-of-use factor shows a significant increase in the perceived software appeal. Finally, shortcomings and limitations of the study are discussed followed by future work proposals.
