Att Instagramma eller att umgås? : En studie om smartphoneanvändande i sociala situationer / To use Instagram or to socialize? : A study about the use of smartphones in social situations

Carlson, Matilda, Ghebremikael, Sharon January 2016 (has links)
Technology’s swift development has changed the way people use it and the way habits form around it. Research has shown that the majority of smartphone users use their device during social activities, even though it is deemed unacceptable. This idea is what makes it interesting to investigate what factors, and if there are applications, that affect the use of smartphones during social activities and if there are any situations that warrants exceptions. The problem this essay will explore is:" What is Media Technology students’ stance on the use of smartphones during social activities?". The social activities were narrowed down to a group consisting of three to five friends in a café or restaurant setting. To answer the problem a quantitative survey was sent out to the target group and qualitative focus groups were conducted. The result of both showed that there was not a definitive answer on the students’ stance. Most students felt that whether something was acceptable or not was contingent on the situation at hand. The majority felt like unnoticeable use or use that contributed to the social activity was acceptable.

Implemention and Evaluation of a Differential GPS Based on Smartphones and Internet Technology

Lawrence, Lal Bosco January 2013 (has links)
This thesis evaluates a hypothesis about how to implement a low cost Differential GPS (DGPS) solution, able to find a current location with a precision almost as good as more expensive DGPS solution.  For this purpose two Smartphone’s are used, one used as a fixed reference station and another used as a roving receiver. The reference station calculates the temporary error at its location at every second and transmits these errors to a server over the internet.  The roving receiver requests to the server to get the latest error from the reference station over the internet. By using these errors or differences, the roving receiver finds a corrected location. The results are in the same range as dedicated DGPS solutions.

GIS-applikationer i smartphones och till surfplattor

Bäckman, Caroline, Lorentzon, Malin January 2012 (has links)
The intention of this work is to describe whether and how municipalities and municipal companies make use of mobile GIS-apps in their daily work. It will also give a general description of how the technology works and what the market looks like. Right now the use of Smartphones is increasing with the public and even companies have started buying smartphones to their offices. The sale of Tablets has also increased and is expected to increase even more in the next few years. This means that the market for applications have increased considerably. The use of mobile GIS-apps by municipalities and municipal companies seems to be rather small right now but the interest is growing all the time. Of those who responded to our questionnaire the majority said that they would be willing to use mobile GIS-apps and that they were interested in developing their own applications specialized for their needs. The technology is developing very rapidly right now and new models of both smartphones and tablets are constantly on the market. The models are more durable and more powerful but as yet there is some way to go before they catch up with the rugged PC in terms of functionality. Right now not many of the municipalities and municipal companies that have answered our questionnaire are using mobile GIS-apps often in their daily work. This appears to be because the information about what applications are available and how to use them do not reach out to the organizations. The fear that the devices that the applications are used on will not be good enough for fieldwork is also one of the reasons why other methods are chosen. What we have found after compiling the questionnaire and conducted two telephone interviews is that municipalities and municipal corporations are interested in mobile GIS-apps and want to embrace the technology but do not yet know how.

THE UTILITY OF MOBILE-ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING (MALL): ESL STUDENTS' BELIEFS ABOUT NEW LITERACY IN SWAZILAND

Mthethwa, Mandlakayise Patrick 01 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) in Swaziland, mainly the use of smartphones for learning English. Because of the need to enable communicative language practice, and access to authentic content (Chinnery, 2006; Petersen & Divitini, 2004; Sole, Calic, & Neijmann, 2010) the use of MALL is currently the main focus in language learning and technology. Therefore, this study examined the utility of MALL in Swaziland, and students' beliefs about the potential benefits of using MALL for learning English in class. To achieve this goal, the main independent variables in the study were purposes for which students use smartphones out of class for learning English vis-à-vis their beliefs about the potential benefits of using smartphones in class for the same reason. The study also investigated students' reasoning for either believing that smartphones can be beneficial or not beneficial in class. To investigate these constructs, the study used two forms of data collection methods. First, a 23-item Likert scale was used to collect quantitative data, which were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Second, telephone interviews were conducted to collect qualitative data, which were analyzed using both inductive analysis and creative synthesis. The results revealed significant differences among the purposes for which students use smartphones out of class for learning English and the potential benefits of using smartphones in class for the same reason. The results have implications for instruction and curriculum development in Swaziland.

In the last years we observed a great change in the way how people interact with their cell phones. Initially, these devices had few functionalities, with receiving and making calls being their main purpose. Nowadays, however, they became general purpose devices, offering a diverse range of services, such as GPS location, e-mail, games, etc. Besides, the great amount of sensors embedded in smartphones enable them to be context aware devices, wich means they can understand the user context and adapt their services to diferent situations. However, the continuous acquisition of context data associated with the overuse of sensors causes high energy consumption. Unfortunately these devices depend on the battery and the battery technology used nowadays haven’t evolved in the same rate of the other components, like CPU and memory. Therefore we face a new problem: How can we provide more services with better quality without wasting energy? To answer this question, many papers in mobile devices hardware and software are focused in energy efficient solutions, in other words, how to reduct the energy consumption in mobile devices without losing performance or quality of service. This master thesis develops a new context aware method for energy consumption reduction in smartphones using sensor selection. The main purpose is to understand where the user is and what activity he/she is doing to select only the necessary sensors to each situation. With less sensor usage we can reduce the energy consumption and since these sensors are necessary we can provide better services to the user. We used association rules for relating diferent features, such as sociability, mobility, position, to better understand the whole user context. To validate our method, we developed an Android service and performed some energy experiments. This prototype was capable of increase the battery life-time in more than one hour.

Can Problematic Cellphone Usage Be Considered Addictive Behavior?

Eller, Chase 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper aims to explore and discuss the points found in published research articles addressing cellphone usage and addiction. The articles vary in their emphasis, methods, and conclusions, but all focus in one way or another on how the advent of cellphone usage has caused addiction in many cellphone and smartphone users. Many of these studies involve looking at college students and teenagers to see how addiction and cellphone usage has affected younger generations. The articles at hand include studies from many different parts of the world. Some of the studies focus on which smartphone activities are the most addictive, while some of the articles focus on addiction as a whole and its impact on the users. Many of the works done on this subject focus on how addiction to these devices compares to a traditional substance abuse. While cellphones and smartphones have had many positive impacts, these improvements do not come without psychosocial hazards and addiction potential. Society places a premium on the ability to better communicate and utilize cellphone technology, but do they truly know what costs these benefits come with?
