When Transracial Adoption Goes in Another Direction

Patel, Habiba January 2020 (has links)
This study aims to understand the experience of a non-White family trying to adopt a transracial child. ‘Transracial adoption’ is defined as a family adopting a child from a different race than theirs. My overarching focus is on how society comes to understand transracial adoption as a one-way transfer of minority children into White families, however, when the roles are reversed there is a lack of acceptance for minority families adopting transracially – specifically, when the adoptive child is White. The purpose of my study is to share my mine and mother’s life experience of fostering, social workers, child welfare and adoption so that minorities who are looking to adopt transracially may use mine and/or my mother’s life experience to help guide their adoption process if they feel they are being discriminated against. This study will also explore motivations, values, ethics and possible biases regarding transracial adoptions. Highlighting the contradictions that exist in transracial adoption practices I will use my own research as a platform for awareness of how social work practice can influence the lives of minorities who would like to adopt transracially, and for the need at both a macro and micro to create clearer transracial adoption policies for minority and White families. / Thesis / Master of Social Welfare (MSW)

Bones, Helle, Malinowski, Julia January 2023 (has links)

Glad, Frida, Brusila Olsson, Emina January 2023 (has links)

Supporting social workers transition to remote work : A design concept for tackling communication challanges on social workers digital practices

Oyegun, Caleb January 2021 (has links)
The main theme of this thesis is the impact of the sudden transition on service delivery caused by the COVID 19 pandemic on social workers and career practitioners in related fields. Like most professional careers that the sudden takeover of the virus has obstructed, the field of social work has been one ofthe professions that the global pandemic has negatively impacted because of its heavy reliance on face-to-face interactions. By employing research methods, challenges faced while working remotely by the social workers were identified, and a main design concepts was proposed in supporting the work of the social workers.

Socialsekreterares kunskap för att bemöta våldsutsatta kvinnors behov : En intervjustudie med erfarna socialsekreterare / Social workers' knowledge to meet the needs of women exposed to violence

Andersson, Sofia January 2023 (has links)
In this survey, experienced social workers will give their view of how they perceive the level of knowledge in being able to respond to the complex needs of women exposed to violence in the "domestic violence" unit. Knowledge can be so much more than what you study at university. In order to possess good knowledge in social work, both empathy and common sense are required. By creating a good alliance with the client, a trust arises that makes the woman dare to tell her story, and the social worker can get the full picture of the woman's problems and needs. If the social worker lets norms and values guide the way of working, the woman will not dare to tell her story, she will feel judged in advance. This can lead to her problem giving her severe consequences if she does not get help with it. Being trusted can be crucial for many women if they want to turn to social services for support. The results of the study were analyzed based on the grassroots theory and the humanistic theory. The central result of the study was that the social workers within the domestic violence unit experienced the working alliance as very significant in their work. The study's results show that the social workers' experience of client work is good, and they have good knowledge within the profession. The challenge lies in having time to create trust and find out what the woman needs help with.

Självbestämmande genom delaktighet : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur socialsekreterare beaktar klientens självbestämmande / Self-determination through participation : A qualitative interview study on how social workers consider client's self-determination

Hästö, Maja, Karlmats, Stina January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how social secretaries who handle financial support perceive the client’s self-determination in relation to the exercise of authority. We interpreted these experiences through a theoretical framework based on Empowerment. The study has a qualitative design and was conducted with semi- structured telephone interviews. The population for the study was social workers who handle financial assistance. The selection group consisted of seven social workers active in Sweden. The results and the subsequent analysis generated four main themes and nine sub-themes regarding perceptions about the concept of self-determination per se, about the client's selfdetermination in relation to laws and regulations and about the strategies that respondents use to promote client self-determination. The results showed that participation was an important part of the work to promote client self- determination.

"Boy or girl, all adolescents want to be seen" : A qualitative study on newly graduated social workers' reflections on gender being done in HVB and how they act in the treatment work with adolescents.

Abazibra, Luan, Karlsson Adjei, Samuel January 2022 (has links)
Socialstyrelsen (2021) reports that 8300 children and young people in Sweden were placed on a so called HVB during 2020. HVB stands for hem för vård eller boende which in english terms is equal to a home for care or housing. HVB was during 2020 the second most common form of placement for children and adolescents. Socialstyrelsen (2018) reports that social workers working within HVB are responsible for meeting young people's care needs in the form of various treatments. Research done by Mattson (2010) suggests that HVB is a closed environment, which can result in social workers that are active in these care homes become identification objects for the young people who are placed in these care homes.   Treatment staff in HVB homes work with adolescents who are in need of support and help. Social workers are expected to work gender-consciously to meet the individual needs of adolescents. Previous research shows that HVB is a complex environment that requires flexibility on the part of treatment staff and that interventions do not always lead to the best results. Newly graduated social workers are expected to possess knowledge as critical awareness of how gender affects treatment work. We have chosen to investigate how newly graduated social workers who are active in HVB homes reflect about the fact that gender is done in treatment work and how they act with adolescents as gender awareness is part of the newly graduated social workers' education. The results of the study showed that the reflections of newly graduated social workers confirm previous research's explanation that gender is made in the treatment work with adolescents and which in turn affects how the staff's treatment work is designed. The result highlights that norms, stereotypes and gender perceptions that society produces affect the treatment work despite the social workers' gender awareness through education. Through the study, we also see the desire to counteract these gender notions and its ability to influence treatment work but that it is difficult.
