We consider intensification a particular phenomenon to contemporary capitalism and which has different diffusion modes according to the branch of economic activity taken into consideration. As for the subject of this study, we situate the social workers as journeymen/women inside the Rede Federal de educação profissional (Federal Network of professional education), with a type of work carried out in the Brazilian federal public service, in which the process of intensification is already consistently implemented. For such, we tried to identify the conditions in which the work is materialized and the forms of work organization by these professionals, expressed in the professional competences and attributions, the particularities and strategies built for the consolidation of professional work in consonance to the Ethical-Political Project of Social Work against institutional requests. Bibliographic, documental and empirical researches were carried out. In the first stage of the empiric research, a semi structured questionnaire was applied to all the social workers in IFSP, in order to obtain a general picture of how the work of social workers is structured in IFSP, and we obtained 24 answers. With the data from this questionnaire we were able to identify the general profile and the information about the work conditions of these professionals. In the second stage of the field research, in loco interviews were carried out with 6 social workers, in order to deepen the categories of work organization, conditions, and the work intensity in IFSP. These professionals were chosen based on two criteria: professionals that have worked in IFSP for at least four years and that work in campi with different levels of structure: better structured campi (those with a longer period of existence), relatively well structured campi and less structured campi of IFSP. The analysis of the results showed that the main indicator of work intensification of the social workers in this place is the work load that comes from the excess of tasks and attributions that come from the main institutional demand to these professionals: the policy of student assistance, a process that causes an increase on demand for more results and deadline meetings, which ends up requiring more work, more speed and a great cost of energy - above all, intellectual energy. Due to the experience of the double graduation with Université Grenoble Alpes - UGA, we also present the data obtained through the research with the social workers that work in the French college education system, especially those regarding the absence of adequate work conditions and the necessary human resources for carrying out the work / Esta dissertação trata da intensificação do trabalho de assistentes sociais no âmbito do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo – IFSP, e tem como propósito analisar suas expressões objetivas e subjetivas.

Att möta dubbel problematik : En kvantitativ studie om våldsutsatta kvinnor med missbruksellerberoendeproblematik utifrån missbrukshandläggaresperspektiv / : Tackling a doubly problematic issue: A quantitative study about femalevictims of violence with substance-abuse problems from the perspectiveof social workers.

Djuse, Åsa, Nordqvist, Lovisa January 2019 (has links)
Most women with substance-abuse problems are also subjected to violence, constituting a serious societal challenge. The social support they receive has been found insufficient and a need to strengthen knowledge/skills within social services has been highlighted. Using Christies (1986) ’ideal victim’ theory as a framework, the purpose of this study was to describe social workers self-perceived competence in relation to female clients subjected to violence, and to explore their attitudes regarding women with substance-abuse problems. Social workers managing female substance-abuse cases were recruited from all municipalities of Dalecarlia, Sweden. The study was conducted based on a quantitative approach and questionnaires were used for data collection. Participants’ responses indicated that the majority perceived their competence to be good. Furthermore, participants tended to endorse non-ideal victim descriptors of women with substance-abuse problems, and while the largest proportion (47,4%) agreed with the statement that violence should be considered secondary to substance-abuse, a similar proportion (42,1%) disagreed. These findings suggested that inadequate competence within social services does not serve as an explanation for the insufficient social support. Instead the study highlights attitudes and organizational conditions within social services in relation to the women.

No meio da travessia: a prática dos assistentes sociais nos serviços de saúde da Aeronáutica/RJ / The practice of social workers in the health services of the Air/RJ

Gisele Martins Horta 21 December 2009 (has links)
This paper examines the reality of practice of social workers in the health services of the Air / RJ, with reference to the ethical-political project of professional social services, expressed in the Code of Professional Ethics, the Law which regulates the profession, and as guidelines for curriculum ABEPSS. The interest in performing this study in professional areas, little discussed in academic circles, defined by the need for theoretical research that enables analyze, develop and disseminate a segment of the class, often unknown and alien to all those working in Social Service. We believe that this study presents a predominantly exploratory nature. For a better understanding of the universe's military Air Force, it is essential to receive "in reality, the limits and possibilities of the real movement of its historicity. To this end, we had the foundation to the theoretical critical-Marxist dialectic that allows to go beyond the appearance of facts. It is true that an institution whose function is close to the model institution "closed", positivist and conservative, based on the principles of hierarchy and discipline, signal, a priori, an impossibility of a real professional emancipatory project. When we conduct an analysis of the statements of social workers interviewed, we tried to consider the everyday professional practice, which reveals presence and absence points to the immediate problems reveals / hides, moving from the particular to the universal. This study aimed to research the locus of the Air Force Hospital in Rio de Janeiro: HAAF, HCA and HFAG. It is in these spaces, an action challenging for those professionals who seek to break bureaucratic practices and conservative and aimed at strengthening democratic practices and collective fulfillment of the demands in the institutional context.

THE IMPACT OF ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS ABOUT FAT ON SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION IN APPALACHIA: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY

Kilgore-Bowling, Genesia 01 January 2017 (has links)
Anti-fat bias and the resulting discriminatory behavior is widely documented and impacts almost every aspect of an obese person’s life, including healthcare/insurance, education, employment, interpersonal relationships, and protection under the law. This has serious psychological, social, physical health, and economic consequences for the obese person. The non-social work related literature provides an abundance of evidence that when obese people seek assistance from a helping professional, they are met with the same anti-fat bias and discrimination present in other areas of their lives. Recognizing that anti-fat bias can lead to negative practice behaviors with obese patients and clients, many professional education programs have implemented curriculum modules and trainings focused on bias reduction. Unfortunately, there is little evidence regarding the existence of anti-fat bias among social work professionals and no evidence regarding whether social work education is including obesity and related issues in its curriculum. Utilizing the Anti-fat Attitudes Test (AFAT), the Universal Measure of Bias-FAT (UMB-FAT), and researcher created inventories, this study surveyed 129 social work educators in Appalachia to explore whether they have an anti-fat bias, if they include issues related to fat in their courses, and if so, is curriculum inclusion adhering to the dominant biomedical discourse or taking a social justice oriented approach. Findings suggest that social work educators in Appalachia hold mostly positive attitudes toward fat individuals and when negative attitudes are present they are related to physical attractiveness and romantic attraction. The data also suggest that social work educators from the southern region of Appalachia hold more anti-fat bias than educators from other regions. The study indicates that social work educators feel that obesity and related issues are worthy of attention from the profession, but they are less convinced that they should be addressing the topic(s) in the courses they teach. Social work educators who do include obesity in their courses tend to focus on exposing students to foundational social justice knowledge and how to recognize oppression and discrimination but they do not prepare them to provide services for and advocate for obese clients. Regional differences in curriculum topics are discussed. Results from the study have important implications for professional social work education. Limitations of the study and areas for further research are considered.

EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OCCUPATIONAL BURNOUT AND THE BEHAVIORAL WELL-BEING OF SOCIAL WORKERS

Pisapia, Damian A 01 June 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between occupational burnout and the behavioral well-being of social workers. Burnout is a multidimensional syndrome where workers experience feelings of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment as a consequence of work related stress and overwhelming job demands. Burnout can negatively affect organizational functioning, work performance, and pose significant health risks to workers. There are a limited number of studies focusing on the impact of occupational burnout on the behavioral well-being of workers. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant relationship between burnout and behavioral well-being. Emotional exhaustion was found to negatively impact exercise frequency, which was consistent with previous study findings. Depersonalization was positively correlated to the number of hours of sleep and the frequency of self-care activities participants engaged in. The effects of depersonalization on sleep and self-care activities suggest that workers may engage in these activities as a way to cope with feelings of depersonalization on the job.

Knowledge of School Resource Officer's Roles and Their Perceptions on School Social Worker's Roles

Cervantes, Cynthia Crystal, Vazquez, Vanessa 01 June 2018 (has links)
The study examined the perception of school resource officers (SROs) role in a school setting, the training they received prior to working in a school setting, their interaction with students, and their relationship with school administration, staff, and school social workers. Previous studies discussed SROs’ roles to be ambiguous and their primary focus of a school resource officer to maintain school safety, while other studies discussed the criminalization in schools due to the placement of law enforcement in the school settings. The study employed a qualitative design with face-to-face interviews with seven participants who serve or have served as a SRO's in a public school, grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. The study found that SROs knew their roles very well and did not feel their role was ambiguous. The study also revealed that and that school administrators might cause issues if they did not fully understand the role and limitations of the SRO’s. Another finding of the study was that SRO’s roles do not collide with school social workers (SSWs). Based on the findings of the study, we recommend that school administrators and staff work on understanding the role of SROs to better work with the students they serve. The study findings also encourage SROs, SSWs and school administrators to work collaboratively to better serve students on campus effectively and work with better understanding each disciplines knowledge.

Intergenerational Caregiver Loss and Successful Aging Opportunity Disruption of Bulgarian Elderly

Habermann, Daniel Georg 01 January 2019 (has links)
Identified by European research as an aging crisis, vulnerabilities in the rural Bulgarian elderly population such as intergenerational caregiver loss, are sociohistorical consequences and barriers to successful aging. This transcultural study investigated the aging crisis in rural Bulgaria to create a contextual definition of successful aging and to address successful aging and the identification of challenges and barriers faced by social workers and elders to support successful aging. Guided by continuity theory in aging and contextualized by overarching ecological systems theory, the research questions examined Bulgarian social workers' perceptions and expectations of successful aging and barriers to it. A collaborative action research design was commissioned with a purposeful sample of an 8-member participant group drawn from multileveled Bulgarian social workers affiliated with the rural elderly population. Data were distilled by a thematic analysis into perceptions, expectations, and barriers of successful aging, which were validated by triangulation through translation and repetitive member checking processes. The findings revealed no universal threshold of successful aging achievement, but because expectations were unmet due to systemic barriers successful aging is not occurring in Bulgaria. The study results might bring about positive change by unifying Bulgarian multilevel social work practice to restore successful aging opportunity for the rural Bulgarian population by actions that systemically respond to the identified barriers.

Social Workers' Perceptions of a Rural Emergency Mental Health Trauma Service

Getz, William L. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Studies have shown that emergency mental health trauma (EMHT) services can significantly reduce the long-term effects of trauma after a disaster. However, rural municipalities may find they do not have the capacity to create such a service, or may not realize that their disaster planning includes no provision for emergency mental health care. Such was the case in a rural island community in the state of Washington, where, in 2014, several residents initiated a discussion that helped to identify the community's lack of EMHT services. This project, framed by action research and based on collaboration theory, sought to advance the potential for the community's 21 resident social workers to address this issue collaboratively. Accordingly, the project's research question asked how social workers on south Whidbey Island perceived the issue of a rural EMHT service in their community. Data consisted of responses from 8 participants who completed mailed questionnaires and participated in brief telephone interviews. Descriptive coding analysis of the data confirmed a nearly universal lack of knowledge about an EMHT service, a clear perception of the need for such a service, and a unanimous commitment from the respondents to participate in addressing this problem. Such collaborative activity is expected to have a positive impact on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work practice in south Whidbey, as well as on the community itself, not only in spearheading a dialogue about EMHT but also in activating a group of social workers who had no prior association.

"More than a liver" - the role of the social work practitioner in hepatitis C treatment centres

Mouton, Marlize, National Centre in HIV Social Research, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
Hepatitis C is a fast growing infectious disease in Australia and is often associated with related psycho-social and mental health problems. The conventional treatment process for hepatitis C is challenging due to a number of reasons. This study explored social workers’ perceptions of the contribution of their role in hepatitis C treatment centres in relation to the treatment experience of patients. The roles that social workers fulfill, their contribution to the multidisciplinary team and towards a culturally competent service, were explored. Furthermore the knowledge, skills and values required for providing a competent service in a hepatitis C treatment setting was explored. The broad theoretical frameworks that inform social work practice were considered, especially the biopsycho-social model, the strengths perspective, the critically reflexive approach and communications theory. This qualitative study used a semi-structured interview method for data collection. Ten social workers in hepatitis C treatment clinics participated in the study. The findings highlight the needs of patients and how social worker participants described helping to address and meet these needs by employing their knowledge, skills and values through their social work roles and interventions in a team context in a multicultural and multi-faceted work environment. A major challenge that social workers described was to keep patients on treatment despite debilitating side effects that diminish patients' motivation to complete treatment. A shortcoming in the service was described to be the limited psychiatric support available at many treatment centres. The findings lead to a number of recommendations to improve social work services in hepatitis C treatment settings. More research was recommended in areas such as motivational techniques, psychiatric support, and effective group work strategies. The need for increased funding for social work positions in the hepatitis C field was also highlighted. It is anticipated that findings of this study can be applied to hepatitis C treatment in broader settings such as prisons, drug and alcohol settings and general practice. This research will contribute to literature in the field of hepatitis C treatment models and in the field of social work practice in hepatitis C contexts.
