Mötet mellan skäggiga män : Hur ett socialt möte skapar en plats

Werbowsky, Charlotte January 2016 (has links)
ABSTRACT Today our physical appearance is more important than before. The way we physically present ourselves is how many of us would like to be seen. By acting a certain way, dressing a certain way or spend time with a certain social group we identify ourselves. A certain style that an individual presents can say something about what that individual are interested in and how the person spends his or her time. Today many complement their physical appearance with a physical attribute like a beard. Beard is seen as something that is trendy and masculine. Many men identify themselves with their beard, even thou it is only a part of the male physical appearance. In Sweden there is a beard contest called “En Karl Med Skägg” this is an event with an audience that nominates Sweden’s best beard of ten final contestants. Men all over the country apply for the contest. A jury then selects ten men that will be the final contestants for the best beard of Sweden.   This thesis is going to analyze the social meeting that the participants create while participating in the contest and the importance of that meeting to them. While participating in the event, participants give the place of the event a meaning and the place of the event also got a meaning to the participants both socially and geographically. These men create a social place that is time-stretched with an importance to them. This thesis is also going to examine how this type of event symbolizes modern culture and how the male gaze is of higher importance than before historically. The thesis is going to analyze the connection between the male self-identification and participating in a social meeting between others, by appearance similar individuals.

Display rules for expressed emotion within organizations and gender: implications for emotional labor and social place marking

Griffin, Andrea Eugenie Charlotte 30 September 2004 (has links)
Emotions are recognized as central to organizational life. The dialogue on the role of emotion in organizational life is furthered here by addressing the role that gendered display rules and associated expectations play in shaping individuals' expressed (rather than felt) responses to emotional exchanges within the organization. The role of gender in shaping intraorganizational emotional display rules is examined as it interplays at social, organizational and individual normative levels. In this context, emotions and emotional displays at work are seen as affecting individual's subjective social place in organizations. It is argued that gendering influences within the organization make social place marking more difficult and may result in increased forms of emotional labor, particularly surface acting/emotional dissonance, which may lead to emotional exhaustion in employees. A laboratory experiment was conducted using videotaped vignettes to represent more and less levels of gendering in emotional interactions. Findings indicate that there were no main effects for level of gendering as operationalized by this study on emotional dissonance, emotional exhaustion and subjective social place. Exploratory data analyses conducted further examine these relationships and point out the importance of the sex of the employee involved in the emotional exchange. This study points towards theoretical and empirical implications for how emotions are interpreted not only by members of different sex categories, but also for other dimensions of diversity in the organization and associated consequences.

The traditional work of physical therapy as exercised by professional tends to be characterized by actions both fragmented and decontextualized. In an effort to explain this situation, geography offers theoretical perspectives useful for understanding how workplaces are constructed. This empirical research used includes 89 interviews with physical therapists, data from the “First São Paulo State Physical Therapists Census” and Brazil’s Ministry of Education studies on the trajectory of undergraduate physical therapy programs. Most of these programs are located in private colleges, that are regionally concentrated in southeast of Brazil, especially the state of São Paulo. The analysis of this information demonstrated that the workplace of the physical therapist is built around rehabilitation services that are tightly linked to the individualist, own private and liberal ideal. On the one hand, the interviews and data sustain the argument that traditional professional practice is fragmented and reductionist, resulting in a process that alienates physical therapists... Participation in women’s groups: a mean to overcome oppression? : A Field Study made in urban Bolivia

Byrskog, Sara January 2014 (has links)
This Bachelor’s thesis is the result of a field study conducted in urban Bolivia. The aim of the study was to get a deeper understanding of the factors that can endorse or limit the potential for the women in a women’s group to influence social and economic agendas. It is a qualitative study that concerns the international social work with a women’s group, whose purpose seek to serve professional management in the production and selling of handicrafts. Participant observations in the women’s group, as well as interviews with two of the international social workers involved with the group were conducted. The results were analysed using a feminist theory perspective, with intersectionality theory as the main tool for analysis. The findings show that the access to income-generating activities can widen the elements of social identification for the women through active learning-processes, and further move towards an image where they become social actors. Concerns regarded if decision-making power were equally distributed among all women in the group.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Cleberson Odair Leonhardt.pdf: 911242 bytes, checksum: e19b00e1b61421b6c4a81fdbad45110e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim objective of this master thesis is to stimulate a reading on the Herbert Marcuse s work that rises an innovative comprehension of the established capitalist society, in order to foster possibilities for social change guided by primarily qualitative dimensions. For this purpose we sought, first, to situate Marcuse in the context of the Frankfurt School and critical theory, as well as demonstrate the development of the specificities of the critical theory improved by him. When Marcuse appropriated of the Marx and Freud s ideas, he has raised a possibility of conceptual expansion, enabling, for instance, the idea of an extension of the social place of denial and the historical contextualization of the reality principle. By pointing out these conceptual extensions and the historicity of the reality principle, also specifying the surplus- repression and performance principle, Marcuse overcomes Freud supported by Marx and expands Marx thematic horizon supported by Freud. It became possible to perform a reading that identifies, even in the biological and natural base, potential changes in human social relations with this theoretical-critical construction. These, especially guided for structural modifications in view of a new sensibility and a new solidarity. The theoretical perspectives thus conquered legitimize the possibility of certain groups and social movements being considered new locals of social place of denial. These have developed and / or preserved the ability of providing subsidies for the modification of the reality principle and, therefore, boost the qualitative change of the whole society. In this perspective it becomes possible to determine parameters for identifying (and fostering) emancipatory capacities of certain social groups in a broad and fruitful way. The possibilities of engagement and change, thus, expanded, diversified and strengthened.
