Perceptions of young males at the Free State School of Nursing with regards to teenage pregnancy

Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree in Masters of Technology in Nursing, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2015. / Introduction Teenage pregnancy is a socioeconomic challenge and an important public health problem for communities in South Africa. Considerable research has been done on teenage pregnancy in South Africa but it focused mostly on teenage girls. Aim of the study The aim of the study was to explore and describe young males’ perceptions, to identify the roles they play in this phenomenon and to determine the factors that influence their perceptions as well as their practices regarding teenage pregnancy. Methodology A qualitative, explorative, descriptive design was used to conduct the study. The study was guided by the Johnson Behavioural Model System. The study population consisted of young males who were studying at the Free State School of Nursing. Data saturation was achieved after interviewing 10 participants. The four major themes emerged from data obtained were as follows: Theme 1: Perceptions regarding teenage pregnancies, Theme 2: Risk factors leading to teenage pregnancies, Theme 3: Cultural and traditional practices influencing perceptions about teenage pregnancies, Theme 4: Measures to prevent teenage pregnancies. Thematic analysis of data was done. Results The findings of this study revealed that young males were not involved in reproductive health programmes aiming to prevent teenage pregnancies. They lacked knowledge regarding the use of, and the available types of contraceptives. Cultural and traditional practices such as misinterpreting circumcision and cultural beliefs, including misconceptions about sexual practices, played a crucial role such as not using contraceptives during sexual intercourse that could lead to teenage pregnancy. This study recommends that young males need to be actively involved in reproductive health.

The aim of this study was to make a contribution to the existing perception of the education planning and economic planning of manpower development by means of formal, technical and vocational education, so as to bring the manpower supply of trained persons in balance with the demand. The emphasis falls on the formal education and training and re-training of the EMPLOYEE as a means of combating the continuous shortage of skilled manpower in the Republic of South Africa. The planning of an education system must have as aim, to plan in such a way that sufficient skilled manpower can be supplied to the labour market, that is - a demand and supply system of formal education for the employee is advocated. A theoretical framework is constructed which indicates that a balance on all levels of manpower demand and supply can be pursued by means of a system of co-operative education for the employee. The essence of effective co-operative education was identified in the study as effective liaison mechanisms between the interested parties, the self-regulating role which financing plays in this type of education and the importance of the timely identification of manpower training needs by the formal education planners and employers. The empirical results indicated that the employees who received post school education and training in the Orange Free State, amount to 5,9 per cent, whilst 94,1 per cent received no such training. This investigation clearly proved that manpower development, as it appears at present in the Orange Free State, could be substantially improved by means of post-school, formal technical and vocational training of the employee by implementing the recommendations made in this dissertation. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Mannekragontwikkeling is n onderafdeling van ekonomiese beplanning. Die doel van hierdie studie was om n bydrae te lewer tot die bestaande insigte aangaande onderwysbeplanning en ekonomiese beplanning van mannekragontwikkeling deur formele tegniese en beroepsonderwys, qm daardeur mannekragvoorsiening . van opgeleides in ewewig met die aanvraag te bring. Die klem val op die formele onderwys en opleiding en heropleiding van die GEeMPLOJEERDE as middel om die voortdurende tekorte aan geskoolde mannekrag in die Republiek van Suid-Afrika, die hoof te bied. Die onderwysstelselbeplanning moet ten doel he om so te beplan dat genoegsame geskoolde mannekrag, aan die arbeidsmark voorsien sal kan word, dit wil se n vraag-aanbodstelsel van formele onderwys vir die geemplojeerde word begunstig. n Teoretiese raamwerk is opgebou waarvolgens aangetoon word dat ewewig op alle vlakke van mannekragaanvraag en -aanbod nagestreef kan word deur n stelsel van kooperatiewe onderwys vir die geemplojeerde. Die wese van doeltreffende, kooperatiewe onderwys is in die studie geidentifiseer as doeltreffende skakelingsmeganismes tussen die belanghebbende partye, die selfregulerende rol wat finansiering in die soort onderwys speel en die belangrikheid van die tydige identifisering van mannekragopleidingsbehoeftes deur die formele onderwysbeplanners en werkgewers. Die empiriese resultate het getoon dat geemplojeerdes wat naskoolse onderwys en opleiding in die Vrystaat deurloop het 5,9 persent bedra, terwyl 94,1 persent geen sodanige opleiding gehad het nie. Uit die ondersoek het dit duidelik geblyk dat mannekragontwikkeling deur middel van naskoolse, formele tegniese en beroepsonderwys van die geemplojeerde, in die huidige opset in die Vrystaat, aansienlik verbeter kan word, deur dit aan te pas by die aanbevelings wat in hierdie proefskrif gemaak is.

Johannesburg, February 1995. / This study, based on material excavated at Rose Cottage Cave, presents a new theoretical perspective for our understanding of the southern African archaeological record dated to the Pleistocenel Holocene boundary. Over the past twelve years, : NO contesting models for interpreting the Pleistocene! Holocene boundary have been proposed - it has been described as a period of cultural stasis, on the one hand, or, as exhibiting continuous change, on the other hand. This study departs from the position that this debate is at a theoretical impasse. Through the assumption of a theoretical framework that deals concurrently with cultural representation and social strategy, previously unrecognised aspects of the archaeological record are investigated. t explore the r-ctlve constitutive role of material culture and thus remove the false dichotomy between cultural form and functional expediency. In allowing for the active role of human agency, a model for the interpretation of spatial use is developer, through the incorporation of the informative and constraining role of previous spatial patternings. I recognise that meaning is actively created, and exarnple the spatially and chronolcqlcatlv contingent nature of meaning through the unique perspective that deep sequence archaeological deposit offers. / MT2017

The experiences, challenges and coping resources of AIDS-orphans heading households in an urban area in the Free State

HIV and AIDS related deaths have left numerous children heading households as the number of adults dying from this pandemic increased significantly. The goal of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences, challenges and coping resources of AIDS-orphans heading households in an urban area in Free State using a qualitative study. The research revealed that the level of suffering faced by these children began with their parents’ illness. This was further worsened by the death of the parents. These children are in most instances not absorbed by their extended families as the traditional safety nets are stretched to their limits. Children heading households were forced to take up adult responsibilities prematurely and as such encounter challenges on daily basis. The study concluded that the child headed families are a reality in South Africa and need lots of support from the government and local communities. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

To ascertain why some women delay in seeking termination of pregnancy (TOP) for unwanted pregnancies in Lejweleputswa District (DC18), Free State

Master of Public Health - MPH / Women of child-bearing age sometimes fail to plan for pregnancies. Often they discover that they are pregnant and are not prepared or cannot afford to raise the child. Before 1996 there was no choice for women as regards pregnancies, all pregnancies must be carried to term and delivered except on health grounds and with stringent conditions. However after the TOP act was enacted in 1996, women were allowed a choice of TOP up to and including 20 weeks of pregnancy. Regardless of the availability of choice of TOP, some pregnant women still present late (after 12 weeks) for TOP when the risks of complications and costs are higher. Women who present late for TOP usually have to be admitted to a district or regional hospital and managed. The costs at such institutions are high. TOPs before 12 weeks (early TOP) are done in a primary health care (PHC) facility (TOP center) and no admission is required hence less cost. Complications of early TOP are also very mild and rare. In Lejweleputswa district there is only one TOP Center (Kopano TOP Clinic) and this serves both Lejweleputswa and the Northern Free State districts. Early TOPs (less than 12 weeks) are done and completed at this center. Late TOPs (above 12 weeks but not more than 20 weeks) are initiated at this TOP center and referred to district or regional hospitals nearest to the patient’s home, in both districts for completion.Problems - An increasing number of women are seeking TOP service at late stages of pregnancies and the incidence of severe complications like severe bleeding, retained placenta, infection, amniotic fluid embolism, death etc, are increasing. The hospital’s bed space and budget are stretched to the limit due to the influx of late term TOP to the hospitals. Lack of manpower, especially doctors, in these hospitals also create some problems, as the few doctors available have to attend to other ill patients as well. Sometimes bleeding TOP patients are transfused with blood and placed on a waiting list for theatre and this often increases the risk of complications. The emotional effect of late TOP on hospital staff (doctors and nurses) are enormous as the expelled fetus are much more developed than in early TOP where no fetus is seen at evacuation with simple Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA). / South Africa

Protest and identity in the context of Sacred spaces: A historical appraisal of three selected sacred sites of the Eastern Free State

PhD (African Studies) / Centre for African Studies / Sacred sites are the preferred space for ritual performances and identity construction from which the issue of sensitive structures, distinctive features, individual interpretations, and symbol and meaning emanates. The history and importance of Motouleng, Mautse and Mantsopa caves (Eastern Free State, SA) for different religious persuasions, indigenous knowledge and ancestral veneration of Africans and traditional healers, were investigated apropos of the following: namely, how sacred sites are exemplifications of African indigenous religion; why they form locations of cultural and spiritual expression, and why they may be regarded as pertinent nodes of identity construction in a vibrant, changing, South African society. This study explored the way in which interpersonal experiences of the cave dwellers shape their sense of self, and the conflict they encounter in the context of interaction, in which identities are constructed and deconstructed in various ways. African religion, landscape and social identity theories are the basis of all theoretical claims utilised here. An interpretative phenomenological analysis research method was explored, to provide a detailed personal experience and examination of the participant’s life world on various issues pertaining to contestation and identity construction at the sacred space of the Eastern Free State. The existence of these sites poses a number of challenges to cave dwellers, land owners, heritage practitioners, and to continued preservation, management and restoration of the said sites. Crucial to this debate is how these sites may be protected both physically and legally. The study used qualitative findings to discover new ideas on identity construction and adjunct belief systems. The study also used thematic analysis to evaluate the research findings and make predictions on the effects on protest and contestation by cave dwellers around sacred spaces. / NRF

The study investigated the experiences of remaining nurse tutors at the Free State School of Nursing during the transformation of Nursing Colleges and downsizing of personnel. The study aimed at describing the experiences of individuals during changes in their work environment, with the purpose of contributing to the identification of guidelines for 'surviving' transformation and downsizing at the workplace. Three themes emerged from this study through the narrative descriptions and unstructured interviews. The first theme, affective responses, dealt with emotions, low morale, depressive moods and anxiety caused by transformation and downsizing. The second theme, cognitive and perceptual view, revealed the thoughts, beliefs, and opinions of remaining nurse tutors regarding transformation and downsizing. Perceptions of and opinions on how nursing education and human dignity were affected were also expressed. The third theme portrayed the coping responses, which described work-related personal and social adjustments nurse tutors made during the transformation of nursing colleges. THE PROVISION OF SUPPORT MATERIAL TO ASSIST FET PHASE ACCOUNTING EDUCATORS IN THE FREE STATE PROVINCE

D.) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2008 / This study primarily focuses on the factors that should be taken into account when developing Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM) to be used by FET Accounting educators to improve the results of their learners. In order to accomplish this aim, literature from published books, textbooks, guidelines and syllabi from the Department of Education, speeches and articles on the internet, interviews and questionnaires were used in capturing data to establish the essence of Accounting and Accounting principles, to determine the educational changes regarding the curriculum that were made and the influence of these changes on the Accounting syllabi for the FET phase, to identify the factors that hamper the improvement of FET Accounting results in schools and to identify, describe and analyse a curriculum and LTSM. A triangulation methodology was employed in this study where qualitative data (interviews) and quantitative data (questionnaires) were captured. Through the interviews with the Learning Facilitators of Accounting and questionnaires completed by Accounting educators, it became clear that a lack of LTSM exist in Accounting. Accounting educators indicated that they are in dire need of LTSM for the FET phase to be able to improve the results of their Accounting learners in tests and examinations.
