Effects of Multilingualism on Working Memory and Subjective Memory in Older AdultsKing, Damian January 2020 (has links)
To investigate whether multilingualism can be used to predict working memory in older adults this study has used a categorical variable as well as a continuous variable to measure multilingualism. This was done while also accounting for possible confounding variables such as intelligence. Furthermore, subjective memory was investigated regarding how it can be affected by multilingualism and if subjective memory is an accurate measure of objective memory. A positive correlation between the Ospan score and composite language score was found while correlations could not be found for subjective memory. However, according to the hierarchical multiple regressions that were done, composite language score was not a significant predictor of Ospan score when demographics and intelligence were accounted for, only intelligence could predict both Span and Ospan scores. In regards to subjective memory, it was found that composite language scores could predict subjective memory and that those who spoke four languages rated themselves worse than monolinguals. Working memory tasks could not, however, predict subjective memory. The conclusions that were made were that multilingualism does not have an effect on working memory capacity but that composite language score and quadrilingualism have an effect on subjective memory.

Både i Sverige och internationellt är det brist på sjuksköterskor. Det behöver utbildas fler sjuksköterskor, men det finns också tendenser som visar att många sjuksköterskor väljer att byta yrke under sitt arbetsliv. Bristen på sjuksköterskor leder till ökad risk för vårdskador samt en sämre arbetsmiljö för den personal som stannar kvar. Med hjälp av en kvalitativ ansats är därför syftet med den här studien att analysera sjuksköterskors reflektioner kring deras beslut att byta yrke. Frågeställningarna som undersöks i studien är vilka faktorer sjuksköterskorna beskriver som avgörande för sitt karriärbyte, samt hur sjuksköterskorna beskriver sin egen beslutsprocess vid valet att byta yrke. I studien har sju sjuksköterskor som idag har en annan yrkestitel eller är studerande inom ett annat område inkluderats. Resultatet analyseras med hjälp av begreppen roller och beslutspunkt, hämtade från Life-span – Life-space theory, samt begreppen livstema, yrkespersonlighet och karriäranpassningsförmåga, hämtade från Career Construction theory. Det framkommer i studien att sjuksköterskorna har haft en lång beslutsprocess där de beskriver sig själva som aktörer för sitt eget beslut. Två orsaker till karriärbyte har varit behovet av förändring samt den kravfyllda yrkesrollen som inte alltid vägs upp av meningsfullheten i deras arbete. Ett yrke som upplevts spännande tidigare behöver inte nödvändigtvis ge samma stimulans ett antal år senare. Resultatet visar även att sjuksköterskorna upplever trygghet i att ha sin utbildning, vilket skapat mod till att pröva en annan bana.

A Quantitative Study on the Correlation Between Grade Span Configuration of Sixth Grade Students in Private Florida Schools and Academic Achievement on Standardized Achievement ScoresRantin, Deborah J. 01 January 2017 (has links)
The applied dissertation was designed to investigate the three models of grade span configurations of sixth grade and the effects grade span configuration has on results of the standardized achievement scores of sixth grade students in private, Florida schools. Studies that have been conducted on sixth grade students and grade span configuration have provided mixed results on the impact of standardized scores. Exploration of the topic that supports the connection is outdated and current research has yet to examine the impact on students who are in private, parochial schools in Florida. The use of data from the TerraNova, Third Edition on grade span configuration has not been evaluated. The correlation between grade span configuration and the results on the sixth grade student standardized achievement scores examines the following three models: kindergarten to sixth grade model (K6), kindergarten to eighth grade model (K8), and the sixth to eighth grade model (6-8, MS). The researcher will use one standardized collection instrument to obtain data in the study and will collect data from Florida schools that administer the TerraNova, Third Edition to sixth grade students in the spring of 2015. Three grade span configuration models will be evaluated by the mean score of sixth grade student performance on the test. Mean scores will be requested by the researcher from the school administrators of private schools in Florida.

<p>Posttraumatic stress disorder involves a constellation of neural and behavioral alterations in response to trauma exposure. Aside from symptoms involved in posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis, patients frequently present with working memory impairments. Working memory training has been established as an effective intervention to reduce posttraumatic stress symptoms. Working memory is associated with posttraumatic stress disorder in that it is commonly impaired in patients and that training can reduce the severity of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Taken together, these points suggest the possibility of a shared mechanism between working memory and posttraumatic stress disorder but working memory has not been studied thoroughly in rodent models of posttraumatic stress disorder. The present study utilizes footshock trauma to induce a posttraumatic stress state in rats and evaluates the effect of trauma and trauma-paired cues on working memory performance. Results demonstrate the emergence of chronic deficits in working memory among traumatized animals three weeks post-trauma. Presentation of trauma-paired cues caused further decrement in working memory performance. Regression analysis indicates that the degree of working memory impairment in response to a trauma-paired cue can be significantly predicted by behavioral phenotypes typic of diagnostic symptoms for posttraumatic stress disorder. This study enhances existing animal models by replicating the clinical observations of working memory deficits associated with posttraumatic stress disorder. This will pave the way for future work to probe underlying mechanistic dysregulation of working memory following trauma exposure and for future development of novel treatment strategies. </p>
