The Portrayal of Mexican American Females in Realistic Picture Books (1998 - 2004)

Amanda J. Sherriff 7 April 2005 (has links)
This study was designed to answer the question: What are the similarities and differences between the portrayal of Mexican American females in realistic picture books published between 1998 and 2004 and such books published between 1990 and 1997? A content analysis was performed on 48 picture books published between 1998 and 2004 that feature Mexican American female characters, and the results were compared to a study of similar books published between 1990 and 1997. The study found that the portrayal of Mexican American females in the more recent time period is more authentic and less stereotypical than their portrayal in the earlier time period and that fewer Mexican American females are now depicted as submitting to gender subordination. However, the results show that the portrayal of Mexican American females in picture books does not yet fully reflect the nontraditional gender roles that these females often take on in contemporary society.

I need a hero: a study of the power of the myth and yellow journalism newspaper coverage of the events prior to the Spanish-American war

Sipes, Sandra C. 07 1900 (has links)
Like most wars, the Spanish-American War had its heroes: the heroes who rescued Cuban prisoner Evangelina Cisneros, the heroes who gave aid to starving, suffering Cubans, and the heroes who investigated the possibility of a sinister element in the mysterious explosion of the battleship Maine. Even the yellow press could be construed as a hero since its leaders spared no expense in sending reporters to Cuba to capture the events leading up to the Spanish-American War for the American public. Designed to explore the hero and the heroic in journalistic coverage of war, this thesis involved qualitative textual analysis of front-page newspaper stories published in New York City during the Spanish-American War. Using Joseph Campbell's power of the myth and the hero as a framework, this thesis explores three major themes: 1) the story of Evangelina Cisneros, 2) the desperate situation of the Cuban people, and 3) the sinking of the battleship Maine. The following research questions are explored: What events in the nine-month period leading up to the war call for heroic action? Who were the heroes according to the yellow newspapers of Hearst and Pulitzer? How did these yellow newspaper stories mirror Campbell's concept of the mythic hero and his/her heroic journey? The analysis shows that these articles answered the human need for excitement, for drama, for a hero, and the need to be a hero. / Thesis (M.A.)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Elliott School of Communication. / "July 2006." / Includes bibliographic references (leaves 60-64)

Sonido y sentido en escena: El papel de la musica en la comedia española del Siglo de Oro y el teatro politico latinoamericano de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. / Sound and Sense on Stage: The Role of Music in Early Modern Spanish comedia and Latin American Political Theatre of the second half of the 20th century.

Batiz Zuk, Martha Beatriz 23 July 2013 (has links)
The academic analysis of drama often tends to privilege the written word over those sensory elements that are such critical aspects of live theatre. Rhythm, music, dialect, and silence – all these auditory features contribute significantly to the impact and meaning of a play, and they allow playwrights – together with the actors and stage directors who realize their dramatic visions – to convey political messages and address specific political issues without having to necessarily state them overtly within the dialogue. As Augusto Boal stated in his Theatre of the Oppressed, drama is a weapon to fight against oppressive regimes. Thus this dissertation analyzes the role of the senses – especially those related to hearing – in developing the themes and intentions of political plays from Latin America and Spain. The aim is to explore how this has – or has not – changed throughout the centuries, with the ultimate objective of finding common musical and sensory elements, as well as possible affinities in the use of auditory features, to further enable a deeper understanding of how theatre is different from other literary genres. To facilitate the analysis, this dissertation explores a total of six dramas: three Latin American political plays written in the second half of the 20th century and three Early Modern Spanish comedias that depict political scenes or themes. These plays are treated by pairs in each chapter and analyzed according to their use of auditory features in concert with written stage directions and dialogue as a means to reflect or denounce social problems pertaining to the different historical periods in which the plays were initially staged. Specifically, the dramatic pairings are as follows: Chapter 1: Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman (1991) The Mayor of Zalamea by Pedro Calderón de la Barca (ca.1640) Chapter 2: Information for Foreigners, by Griselda Gambaro (1971) Fuenteovejuna, by Lope de Vega (ca.1610) Chapter 3: The Extentionist, by Felipe Santander (1978) Cruelty for Honour, by Juan Ruiz de Alarcón (ca.1621-22). Each play is analyzed according to the theoretical frames that better serve its specific needs and particularities. However, the theories of Giorgio Agamben, Augusto Boal, José Antonio Maravall, Angel Rama, Walter Ong, and especially Bertolt Brecht, form the spinal chord that sustain this study and tie the three chapters to one another. The attention given to each one of these critics and their theories is explained in each chapter’s introduction. As the conclusions show, these plays rely on sensory, linguistic and musical elements to denounce social and political problems of their time, and to try to move their different audiences towards reflection or action, in order to improve the society in which they lived.

Imitación e ingenio: El amar su propia muerte de Juan de Espinosa Medrano y la comedia nueva

Bass, Laura R. 25 September 2017 (has links)
-- This article offers a close reading of Juan de Espinosa Medrano’s three-act play El amar su propia muerte in relation both to the author’s theatricalmodels in Spain and to his particular preoccupations as a Peruvian intellectual aware of his secondary position vis-à-vis Spanish cultural centrality. Following the practices of baroque imitatio, Espinosa Medrano succeeded in bringing together the multiple conventions and subgenres of the comedia nueva in such a way that he not only demonstrated a totalizing assimilation of his models but also interrogated their underlying logical structures. The result is an allegory of ingeniousness linked to the author’s overall project, made more explicit in such works has his famous Apologético en favor de Góngora, of Creole intellectual vindication.

The object of this research is to study the Chronicle of a Death Foretold written by the Colombian Gabriel García Márquez. This literary work is composed by accounts which provide the understanding of the facts about the death of the main character present in this narrative. It is analyzed from the perspectives of witness narratives and chronicle (AIO: 2007), because it is possible to notice that this both textual types exist in the Chronicle of a Death Foretold, demonstrating that this narrative contains different textual characteristics. The mixture of these textual characteristics is observed in the narrator and in the characters evidences of their mournful experiences through the daily events fictionalization. This hybridism is intensified because there is always a mystery around the narrative as it is also observed in detective novels (BOILEAU-NARCEJAC: 1991), in which there is the triad: victim, criminal and the crime. It is also analyzed the individual and collective memories presented by the narrator and the characters, as studied by (HALBWACHS: 2006; BOSI: 2003). In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the narrator presents not just the characters views, but also his own impressions about the whole story, leaving his point of view about the narrative
