Investigation of optimal dosing strategies for Ertapenem for varying BMI using mathematical modeling

Jewett, Bethany 01 May 2019 (has links)
Previous research suggests that the efficacy of Ertapenem, a carbapenem antibiotic administered intravenously, is related to a patient’s body mass index. Using an existing physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model for Ertapenem, we constructed a least squares inverse problem to determine an optimal dose for males with varying body weights and heights. The criteria for an optimal dose was based upon pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) parameters calculated for a male with a body height of 175 cm and a weight of 72 kg. We also adjusted dosing intervals to ensure that effective concentration of drug between doses was the same for all males regardless of BMI.

Local coherence in academic writing: an exploration of Chilean 12th grade Spanish monolingual students' metalinguistic knowledge, writing process, and writing products

Concha Bañados, Soledad January 2007 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / This study focused on 12th grade Chilean students' ability to produce locally coherent academic texts and on the cognitive basis that underlies this ability. Participants were Chilean students from the city of Santiago, who attended urban public schools, belonged to a low socioeconomic group, and had obtained average scores on the national literacy assessment (SIMCE). All the students in the study wrote argumentative texts in response to a writing prompt and answered a test of recognition of incoherent sequences. A sub sample wrote a second argumentative text while thinking aloud and, immediately after, they had a semi structured interview with the researcher in which the relationship between the ideas included in their texts was discussed. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in order to analyze local coherence in students' written products, and the relation between these products and students' ability to recognize, explain and self-regulate local coherence during writing. Students who recognized most incoherent sequences were more able to explain local coherence relations, tended to self-regulate writing, and produced texts that were mostly coherent and that exhibited an incipient command of the resources associated to coherent academic writing. Students who recognized none or few incoherent sequences had trouble explaining local coherence relations, did not self-regulate writing, and produced texts that were mostly coherent but that exhibited poor command of the resources associated to coherence in academic writing. In addition, the majority of students in the high recognition group recalled some kind of instruction on local coherence, while the majority of students in the low recognition group could not remember receiving such instruction. Findings suggest that having command of the resources typical of oral language coherence suffices for composing mostly coherent texts, although such writing does not resemble the academic structures. Specifically, contents are not transformed by virtue of logical operators that could reflect a more analytical or critical thinking. It is suggested that being able to use local coherence resources typical of academic writing is associated to having specific knowledge and a self regulated behavior during the writing process.

Some Innovations in an Oral Approach to Teaching English to Spanish-Speaking Students: Eighth Grade Level

Woolsey, Normada L. 01 1900 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to suggest how some of the trends mentioned above may be incorporated into a program to help the eighth grade Spanish-speaking student in a predominately English-speaking school, to help the student who has not only given up the idea of getting an education himself, but is considered by his teachers "too late" to reach.

El Cine De Terror Español Como Espejo De La Cultura Española

Donahue, Tyler 05 1900 (has links)
This study traces the history and culture of Spain as seen through the lens of the nation´s production of horror cinema. Starting from the boom of Spanish horror film in the early 1960s, the thesis compares and contrasts the political and social aspects of Spanish society throughout three distinct eras of the 20th century: 1962 – 1975 (the boom of Spanish horror film through the Franco dictatorship), 1975 – 1999 (the transition to democracy through the end of the 20th century) and 2000 – present (the 21st century). Movies as diverse as Gritos en la noche (1962, Jesús Franco), ¿Quién puede matar a un niño? (1976, Narciso Ibáñez Serrador) and Angustia (1987, Bigas Luna) are framed by culturally-related anectodes as well as correlations to their respective social environments. Special attention has been paid to the production and release of each film, especially in regards to censorship during the Franco dictatorship. The results show that Spanish horror cinema has acted as a true mirror to culture, society and politics in its native country throughout the 20th century and that this trend will likely extend in to the future.

A Sign of the Time: An Exploration of Interior Design for Senior Living via Aging In Place, Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care

Lane, Mary 01 May 2022 (has links)
The nature of this essay explores the changes in designing a space for aging clients through the end of their lives. Over the course of the essay, four major time periods, their respective design elements, and three floor plans are highlighted through a third person narrative of Jill and Don. These fictitious characters are created using research in the process of aging and personal interviews with loved ones whose experiences have been adapted or modified from their original candor to fit this storyline.

Kommunikationsfokus i spanskundervisningen

Serrano Rubio, Milla January 2020 (has links)
