Cette thèse étudie la technique dite de ‘Retournement Temporel’ afin d’améliorer l’efficacité énergétique des futurs réseaux mobiles d’une part, et réduire le coût des futurs terminaux mobiles, d’autre part. Le retournement temporel consiste à utiliser l’inverse temporel de la réponse impulsionnelle du canal de propagation entre un émetteur et un récepteur pour préfiltrer l’émission d’un signal de données. Avantageusement, le signal ainsi préfiltré est reçu avec une puissance renforcée (c’est la focalisation spatiale) et un écho principal qui est renforcé par rapport aux échos secondaires (c’est la compression temporelle). Lors d’une étape préalable d’apprentissage, l’émetteur estime le canal en mesurant un signal pilote provenant du récepteur. La focalisation spatiotemporelle n’est obtenue qu’à condition que la propagation demeure identique entre la phase d’apprentissage et la phase de transmission de données : c’est la condition de ‘réciprocité du canal’. De nombreux travaux montrent que la focalisation spatiale permet de réduire la puissance émise nécessaire pour atteindre une puissance cible au récepteur d’une part, et que la compression temporelle permet de réduire la complexité du récepteur nécessaire pour gérer l’effet des échos multiples, d’autre part. Cependant, les études sur la réduction de la complexité du récepteur se limitent à l’ultra large bande. Des travaux de cette thèse (basés sur des simulations et des mesures expérimentales) montrent que pour des bandes de fréquences plus typiques des futurs réseaux mobiles (fréquence porteuse à 1GHz et spectre de 30 MHz à 100 MHz), grâce au retournement temporel, un récepteur simple et un signal monoporteuse suffisent pour atteindre de hauts débits. En outre, la condition de réciprocité du canal n’est pas vérifiée dans deux scénarios typiques des réseaux mobiles. Tout d’abord, dans la plupart des réseaux mobiles européens, le mode de duplex en fréquence est utilisé. Ce mode implique que l’émetteur et le récepteur communiquent l’un avec l’autre sur des fréquences porteuses distinctes, et donc à travers des canaux de propagations différents. De plus, lorsqu’on considère un récepteur sur un véhicule connecté en mouvement, l’émetteur et le récepteur communiquent l’un avec l’autre à des instants distincts, correspondants à des positions distinctes du véhicule, et donc à travers des canaux de propagations différents. Des travaux de cette thèse proposent des solutions pour obtenir la focalisation spatio-temporelle dans ces deux scenarios. Enfin, des travaux de la thèse explorent la combinaison du retournement temporel avec d’autres techniques de traitement de signal récentes (la modulation spatiale, d’une part, et une nouvelle forme d’onde multiporteuse, d’autre part), ou des scenarios de déploiement nouveaux (ondes millimétriques et très grands réseaux d’antennes pour inter-connecter les noeuds d’un réseau ultra dense) ou de nouvelles applications (guidage et navigation) envisageables pour les futurs réseaux mobiles. / This thesis studies the time reversal technique to improve the energy efficiency of future mobile networks and reduce the cost of future mobile devices. Time reversal technique consists in using the time inverse of the propagation channel impulse response (between a transceiver and a receiver) as a prefilter. Such pre-filtered signal is received with a stronger power (this is spatial focusing) and with a strong main echo, relatively to secondary echoes (this is time compression). During a previous learning phase, the transceiver estimates the channel by measuring the pilot signal emitted by the receiver. Space-time focusing is obtained only at the condition that the propagation remains identical between the learning phase and the data transmission phase: this is the ‘channel reciprocity’ condition. Numerous works show that spatial focusing allows for the reduction of the required transmit power for a given target received power, on the one hand, and that time compression allow for the reduction of the required complexity at the receiver side to handle multiple echoes, on the other hand. However, studies on complexity reduction are limited to ultra wideband. Some works of this thesis (based on simulations and experimental measurements) show that, for bands which are more typical for future networks (a carrier frequency of 1GHz and a spectrum of 30 MHz to 100 MHz), thanks to time reversal, a simple receiver and a mono-carrier signal are sufficient to reach high data rates. Moreover, the channel reciprocity condition is not verified in two scenarios which are typical from mobile networks. Firstly, in most European mobile networks, the frequency division duplex mode is used. This mode implies that the transceiver and the receiver communicate on distinct carriers, and therefore through different propagation channels. Secondly, when considering a receiver on a moving connected vehicle, the transceiver and the receiver communicate one with each other at distinct instants, corresponding to distinct positions of the vehicles, and therefore through different propagation channels. Some works of this thesis propose solutions to obtain space-time focusing for these two scenarios. Finally, some works of this thesis explore the combination of time reversal with other recent signal processing techniques (spatial modulation, on the one hand, a new multi-carrier waveform, on the other hand), or new deployment scenarios (millimeter waves and large antenna arrays to interconnect the nodes of an ultra dense network) or new applications (guidance and navigation) which can be envisaged for future mobile networks.

Les théories relatives à la biodiversité contrastent fortement quant au rôle qu’elles accordent aux différences de traits écologiques entre espèces (théorie des niches) ou à la stochasticité démographique (théorie neutre de la biodiversité) pour expliquer l’organisation des communautés d’espèces compétitrices. Les espèces en compétition pour une ressource pulsée permettent de tester à relativement court terme ces théories : dans le cadre de la théorie des niches, les espèces en compétition devraient présenter de fortes différences de traits les conduisant à exploiter différemment la ressource pulsée; elles devraient alors répondre démographiquement de manière différente aux fortes fluctuations en ressources et leurs dynamiques populationnelles devraient être asynchrones. Au contraire, dans le cadre de la théorie neutre, les espèces ne devraient pas présenter de différences majeures dans leurs caractères associés à l’exploitation de la ressource variable; elles devraient alors répondre de la même manière aux pulses et leurs dynamiques populationnelles devraient être synchronisées. Nos travaux, centrés sur quatre espèces du genre Curculio en compétition pour l’exploitation des glands de chêne, permettent de mettre en évidence (i) qu’un fort partitionnement global de leurs niches est assorti de dynamiques populationnelles asynchrones. (ii) Cependant, ils montrent également que deux des quatre espèces compétitrices apparaissent très similaires quant aux caractères étudiés et présentent des dynamiques de population synchronisées. Les résultats, dans leur ensemble, fournissent donc l’un des premiers arguments empiriques en faveur d'une théorie unifiée de la biodiversité / Understanding the organization of communities composed of competing species, and notably their biodiversity, has led to two theories that sharply contrast with each other about the role primarily assigned either to the differences in ecological traits among the species (niche theory) or to the demographic stochasticity (neutral theory of biodiversity). Species competing for a pulsed resource allow testing the two theories in short-term studies: the niche theory predicts that differences should exist in the traits of such species, which should allow them taking advantage of the resource in various ways; the species should thus respond differently to the fluctuations in the availability of the resource, resulting in asynchronous population dynamics. In contrast, the neutral theory predicts that the trait differences possibly existing between the species should not impact the way they use the variable resource; the species should then respond similarly to the pulses and their population dynamics should be synchronized. Our work, focusing on four phytophagous insect species (Curculio spp.) that compete for oak acorns (Quercus spp.), (i) show evidence of a clear, global niche partitioning combined with asynchronous population dynamics (ii) but points out that two of these species show similar ecological traits and display synchronized population dynamics. Overall, these results therefore provide one of the first empirical arguments in favor of a unified theory of biodiversity

Nas últimas décadas, testemunhou-se um crescente interesse no estudo de sistemas complexos. Tais sistemas são compostos por pelo menos dois componentes fundamentais: elementos dinâmicos individuais e uma estrutura de organização definindo a forma de interação entre estes. Devido a dinâmica de cada elemento e a complexidade de acoplamento, uma grande variedade de fenômenos espaço-temporais podem ser observados. Esta tese tem como objetivo principal explorar o uso da dinâmica espaço-temporal em redes visando a solução de alguns problemas computacionais. Com relação aos mecanismos dinâmicos, a sincronização entre osciladores acoplados, a caminhada aleatória-determinística e a competição entre elementos na rede foram considerados. Referente à parte estrutural da rede, tanto estruturas regulares baseadas em reticulados quanto redes com estruturas mais gerais, denominadas redes complexas, foram abordadas. Este estudo é concretizado com o desenvolvimento de modelos aplicados a dois domínios específicos. O primeiro refere-se à utilização de redes de osciladores acoplados para construção de modelos de atenção visual. Dentre as principais características desses modelos estão: a seleção baseada em objetos, a utilização da sincronização/ dessincronização entre osciladores neurais como forma de organização perceptual, a competição entre objetos para aquisição da atenção. Além disso, ao comparar com outros modelos de seleção de objetos baseados em redes osciladores, um número maior de atributos visuais é utilizado para definir a saliência dos objetos. O segundo domínio está relacionado ao desenvolvimento de modelos para detecção de comunidades em redes complexas. Os dois modelos desenvolvidos, um baseado em competição de partículas e outro baseado em sincronização de osciladores, apresentam alta precisão de detecção e ao mesmo tempo uma baixa complexidade computacional. Além disso, o modelo baseado em competição de partículas não só oferece uma nova técnica de detecção de comunidades, mas também apresenta uma abordagem alternativa para realização de aprendizado competitivo. Os estudos realizados nesta tese mostram que a abordagem unificada de dinâmica e estrutura é uma ferramenta promissora para resolver diversos problemas computacionais / In the last decades, an increasing interest in complex system study has been witnessed. Such systems have at least two integrated fundamental components: individual dynamical elements and an organizational structure which defines the form of interaction among those elements. Due to the dynamics of each element and the coupling complexity, various spatial-temporal phenomena can be observed. The main objective of this thesis is to explore spatial-temporal dynamics in networks for solving some computational problems. Regarding the dynamical mechanisms, the synchronization among coupled oscillators, deterministic-random walk and competition between dynamical elements are taken into consideration. Referring to the organizational structure, both regular network based on lattice and more general network, called complex networks, are studied. The study of coupled dynamical elements is concretized by developing computational models applied to two specific domains. The first refers to the using of coupled neural oscillators for visual attention. The main features of the developed models in this thesis are: object-based visual selection, realization of visual perceptual organization by using synchronization / desynchronization among neural oscillators, competition among objects to achieve attention. Moreover, in comparison to other object-based selection models, more visual attributes are employed to define salience of objects. The second domain is related to the development of computational models applied to community detection in complex networks. Two developed models, one based on particle competition and another based on synchronization of Integrate-Fire oscillators, present high detection rate and at the same time low computational complexity. Moreover, the model based on particle competition not only offers a new community detection technique, but also presents an alternative way to realize artificial competitive learning. The study realized in this thesis shows that the unified scheme of dynamics and structure is a powerful tool to solve various computational problems

Spatially explicit modeling on networks: understanding patterns & describing processes / Modelagem espacialmente explícita em redes: compreendendo padrões e descrevendo processosMiranda, Gisele Helena Barboni 28 May 2019 (has links)
In contrast to established approaches that analyze networks based on their structural properties, networks can also be studied by investigating the patterns that are evolved by a discrete dynamical system built upon them, such as cellular automata (CAs). Combined with networks these tools can be used to map the relationship between the network architecture and its impact on the patterns evolved by the governing spatially discrete dynamical system. This thesis focuses on the investigation of discrete spatially explicit models (SEMs), among which are CAs, for network analysis and characterization. The relationship between network architecture and its dynamic aspects concerning pattern formation is studied. Additionally, this work aims at the development of evolutionary methods that can be employed for extracting features from such patterns and then be used as network descriptors. In order to achieve this goal, methods that integrate the network structure with the SEMs were proposed, implemented and analyzed. The proposed family of network automata is characterized by birth-survival dynamics that results in different categories of spatio-temporal patterns. Such patterns were quantitatively assessed and used to characterize different network topologies and perform classification tasks in the context of pattern recognition. Inspired by the classic Life-like CA, the proposed Life-like Network Automata (LLNA) illustrate how such tasks can be performed in real-world applications. In addition, the rock-paper-scissors (RPS) model, normally implemented on square lattices, was investigated by defining it on networks. The obtained results confirm the potential of the proposed quantitative analysis of the spatio-temporal patterns for network classification. This quantitative analysis was performed for a set of different pattern recognition tasks and for the majority of them, the classification performance improved. In addition, the reliability of LLNA as a general tool for pattern recognition applications was demonstrated in a diverse scope of classification tasks. The applicability of structural network descriptors was also highlighted in the context of shape characterization in computer vision. Through the proposed approach, the link between these network descriptors and the shape properties, such as angle and curvature, was illustrated. Moreover, when chosen adequately, the network descriptors led to a better classification performance for different shape recognition tasks. Regarding the RPS model, we demonstrated that the presence of long-range correlations in some networks directly influence the RPS dynamics. Finally, it was shown how a commuter network can be used to predict influenza outbreaks. All the proposed methods use different aspects of network analysis and contribute to the study of CAs and other SEMs on irregular tessellations, in contrast to the commonly used regular topologies. In addition, new insights were obtained concerning pattern recognition in networks through the use of spatio-temporal patterns as network descriptors. / Em contraste às abordagens clássicas que analisam redes com base em suas propriedades estruturais, as redes também podem ser estudadas investigando-se os padrões desenvolvidos por um sistema dinâmico discreto construído sobre essas redes, como os autômatos celulares (CAs). Combinadas às redes, essas ferramentas podem ser usadas para se mapear a relação entre a arquitetura da rede e seu impacto nos padrões obtidos pelo sistema dinâmico subjacente. Esta tese está focada na investigação de modelos discretos espacialmente explícitos (SEMs), entre os quais os CAs, para análise e caracterização de redes. A relação entre a arquitetura da rede e seu aspecto dinâmico em relação à formação de padrões é investigada. Além disso, este trabalho visa o desenvolvimento de métodos evolutivos que podem ser usados para extrair características de tais padrões para, então, serem usados como descritores de redes. Para atingir este objetivo, métodos que integram a estrutura da rede com os SEMs foram propostos, implementados e analisados. A família de redes-autômatos proposta é caracterizada por uma dinâmica de nascimento-sobrevivência que resulta em diferentes categorias de padrões espaço-temporais. Tais padrões foram avaliados quantitativamente e utilizados para caracterizar diferentes topologias de redes e realizar tarefas de classificação no contexto do reconhecimento de padrões. Inspirados pelo clássico Life-Like CA, a rede-autômato proposta, Life-like (LLNA), ilustra como tais tarefas podem ser realizadas em aplicações mais realistas. Além disso, o modelo de rock-paper-scissors (RPS), normalmente implementado em reticulados quadrados, foi investigado usando-se redes como tesselações. Os resultados obtidos confirmam o potencial da análise quantitativa proposta dos padrões espaço-temporais para classificação de redes. Essa análise quantitativa foi realizada para um conjunto de tarefas de reconhecimento de padrões, e, para a maioria dessas tarefas, o desempenho da classificação melhorou. Além disso, a confiabilidade do LLNA como uma ferramenta genérica para reconhecimento de padrões foi demonstrada para várias tarefas de classificação de diferentes escopos. A aplicabilidade de descritores estruturais de redes também foi destacada no contexto de caracterização de formas em visão computacional. Através da abordagem proposta, a ligação entre esses descritores de rede e as propriedades da forma, como ângulo e curvatura, foi ilustrada. Além disso, quando escolhidos adequadamente, os descritores de rede levam a um melhor desempenho de classificação para diferentes tarefas de categorização de formas. No que diz respeito ao modelo RPS, demonstramos que a presença de correlações de longo alcance nas redes afeta diretamente a dinâmica do modelo. Finalmente, foi apresentado como uma rede de transporte pode ser usada para prever surtos de gripe. Todos os métodos propostos utilizam diferentes aspectos da análise de redes e contribuem para o estudo de CAs e outras SEMs em tesselações irregulares, uma vez que estes modelos são geralmente descritos em topologias regulares. Além disso, uma nova metodologia foi proposta em relação ao reconhecimento de padrões em redes através do uso de padrões espaço-temporais como descritores da rede.

Caractérisation spatio-temporelle d’impulsions laser de haute puissance / Spatiotemporal characterization of ultra-intense laser pulsesPariente, Gustave 05 January 2017 (has links)
Les lasers de haute puissance permettent d'atteindre des intensités très importantes (jusqu'à 10²²W.cm⁻²). Parvenir à ce niveau d'intensité nécessite de concentrer une quantité modérée d'énergie (de l'ordre du joule) dans un temps très court (de l'ordre de la dizaine de femtosecondes) sur une surface réduite (de l'ordre du μm²). Ces faisceaux sont donc ultra-courts et focalisés à l'aide d'une optique à grande ouverture. Ces caractéristiques signifient que leur diamètre avant focalisation est grand et leur largeur spectrale est importante. Pour cette raison, ces faisceaux sont à même de présenter des distorsions spatio-spectrales (ou couplages spatio-temporels). Après focalisation, ces distorsions ont pour effet une diminution drastique de l'intensité pic. Ceci est d'autant plus vrai que le système laser est puissant et donc que son diamètre et sa largeur spectrale sont grands. En dépit de cet effet néfaste, les couplages spatio-temporels présentent aussi un intérêt lorsqu'ils sont maitrisés. On peut en effet introduire des couplages spatio-temporels de faible amplitude à des fins expérimentales. Dans les années 1990 et 2000, un effort important a été fourni pour permettre la caractérisation et l'optimisation du profil temporel des lasers femtoseconde. Dans le même temps, des solutions d'optique adaptative ont été développées pour contrôler le profil spatial des faisceaux ultra-intenses et obtenir la meilleure tache focale possible. Les systèmes laser de haute-puissance actuels sont maintenant caractérisés et optimisés indépendamment par ces deux types de diagnostics. Par essence, cette approche est aveugle aux couplages spatio-temporels. Seule une caractérisation spatio-temporelle permettrait de mesurer ces distorsions. Il existait déjà des méthodes de caractérisation spatio-temporelle avant le début de cette thèse. Aucun de ces dispositifs n'avait cependant été adapté à la mesure de faisceaux ultra-intenses. Lors de cette thèse, nous avons développé une nouvelle technique de caractérisation spatio-temporelle appelée TERMITES. Cette technique est basée sur un schéma de spectroscopie par transformée de Fourier auto-référencée. TERMITES nous a permis d'effectuer la première caractérisation spatio-temporelle totale d'un laser 100 TW (le laser UHI-100 du CEA Saclay). Les distorsions spatio-temporelles détectées à l'aide de ces mesures ont confirmé la nécessité d'une généralisation de la métrologie spatio-temporelle des lasers de haute puissance. / High power laser make it possible to reach very high intensities (up to 10²²W.cm⁻²). In order to get to this level of intensity, a moderate quantity of energy (on the order of the Joule) is concentrated in a very short time (on the order of tens of femtoseconds) onto a small surface (on the order of 1 μm²). These beams are therefore ultra-short and focused with a high aperture optic. These features mean that their diameter prior to focus is large and their spectral width is big. As a result, these beams are subject to spatio-spectral distorsions (of spatio-temporal couplings). After focus, these distorsions induce a dramatic reduction of the peak intensity. This situation is all the more true when the laser is more intense and its diameter and spectral width are therefore bigger. Despite their detrimental effects, spatio-temporal couplings can be of great interest when controlled. One can indeed introduce weak spatio-temporal couplings for experimental purposes. In the 1990s and 2000s, a big effort was put in order to characterize dans optimize the temporal profile of femtosecond lasers. Meanwhile, adaptative optics solutions were developed to control the spatial profil of ultra intense laser beams and provide the best focal spot achievable. By nature, this approach is blind to spatio-temporal couplings. Measuring these distorsions requires a spatio-temporal characterization. Before the start of this Phd thesis, spatio-temporal characterization methods already existed. Although none of these devices were ever adapted to the measurement of ultra-intense laser beams. During this Phd Thesis, we developped a new spatio-temporal characterization technique which we called TERMITES. This technique is based on a self-referenced Fourier transform spectroscopy scheme. TERMITES made it possible for us to perform the first total spatio-temporal characterization of a 100 TW laser (UHI-100 at CEA Saclay, France). The detection of spatio-temporal distorsions with the help of these measurements confirmed the need for a generalization of spatio-temporal characterization of ultra-high power lasers.

Then such task is solved using LSTM recurrent neural networks . Lastly , result of sequence labeling is interpreted as detected events . Library for event detection has been created as the output of this work . This library allow user to experiment with different variants how to formulate event detection as sequence labeling task .

Paysages emblématiques des campagnes de l’Ouest, les bocages ont connu une série de transformations rapides et importantes ces quarante dernières années : érosion du linéaire de haies, changements des usages du sol, rationalisation et agrandissement du parcellaire, banalisation et massification des bâtiments agricoles, enfrichement des secteurs les plus difficiles à exploiter. L’ampleur des ajustements observés souligne le décalage entre ces formes paysagères héritées d’une longue histoire agraire, et l’évolution des systèmes agricoles qui contribuent à les produire.Si la transformation des paysages de bocage est généralement attribuée au tournant « productiviste » du modèle agricole français, les processus socio-techniques à l’origine de ces évolutions sont plus rarement explicités. L’objet de ce travail est d’évaluer plus spécifiquement la contribution de l’agrandissement des exploitations agricoles à la dynamique d’évolution des paysages bocagers de l’Ouest de la France.Ce travail de géographie s’appuie dans un premier temps sur une analyse statistique à l’échelle du grand Ouest de la France, visant à étudier l’effet des transformations foncières sur les structures spatiales agricoles (assolements, parcellaire, linéaires boisés…). Dans un second temps, les dynamiques paysagères et foncières de quatre espaces d’étude (Bessin, Bocage Virois, Sud Manche, Pays d’Auge), situés en domaine laitier et bocager mais présentant des configurations agricoles variées, ont été étudiées entre 2003 et 2016. Ce travail s’appuie notamment sur un dispositif méthodologique original, articulant au sein d’un système d’information géographique à échelle parcellaire (1) la construction d’un suivi à échelle spatio-temporelle fine des dynamiques paysagères (évolution du maillage bocager, de la trame parcellaire et de l’occupation du sol) et (2) la reconstitution de l’évolution de la mosaïque des parcellaires d’exploitations par appariement de plusieurs millésimes du registre parcellaire graphique. L’exploitation de cette base de données spatio-temporelle a permis de mieux comprendre le rôle de la transformation foncière des exploitations agricoles dans la dynamique des paysages bocagers. Enfin, une enquête de terrain a été réalisée auprès de 150 agriculteurs équitablement répartis dans les quatre espaces d’étude, afin d’appréhender les conséquences sociales, techniques et productives de l’agrandissement à l’échelle des exploitations agricoles, qui diffèrent singulièrement selon le type de trajectoire foncière suivie. / Symbolic landscapes of the countryside of the West of France, the bocage landscapes have undergone a series of transformations these last forty years : decrease in hedgerow density, land uses changes, plots extension, normalization and enlargement of farm buildings, spatial extension of wilderness… The intensity of landscape transformations highlights the contradiction between these landscape forms produced by a long agrarian history and the contemporary evolutions of farming systems. The transformation of hedgerow landscapes is generally attributed to the "productivist" turn of the French agricultural model. However, the socio-technical processes behind these changes are more rarely explained.The first purpose of this geography work is to study the effects of changing agricultural systems on agricultural spatial structures, based on a statistical analysis at the scale of the West of France. In a second step, the landscape and land dynamics of four study areas (Bessin, Bocage Virois, Sud Manche, Pays d'Auge), located in the dairy and bocage domain, have been studied between 2003 and 2016. This work is based on an original methodological device, set up in a geographical information system. This structuration of geographic information makes possible to (1) monitor the landscape dynamics (evolution of the hedgerow density, land cover and plot morphology changes) at a fine spatial and temporal scale and (2) to reconstruct the evolution of the mosaic of farm plots, by matching land-parcell identification systems across the time (2007, 2011, 2013). From this spatio-temporal database, we characterized the coevolution of landscape structures and farm territories across the time, in order to better understand the landscape consequences of farm enlargment.Finally, a field survey was carried out among 150 farmers equitably distributed in the four study areas, in order to apprehend the social, technical and productive consequences of the farms enlargment, which differ singularly according to the type of land trajectory followed.

Impact of spatio-temporal variability of the Mascarene High on weather and climate over Southern AfricaXulu, Nkosinathi Goodman 05 1900 (has links)
MENVSC (Climatology) / Department of Geography and Geo-Information Sciences / Subtropical anticyclones locate and modulate weather and climate over subtropical belts for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This study investigates the spatio-temporal variability of the Mascarene High over the South Indian Ocean on (anomalous) weather and climate over southern Africa at intraseasonal, seasonal, interannual, multidecadal and event time-scales. The Mascarene High is located 25-35°S, 40-110°E, playing a vital role in day-to-day weather and climate patterns conditions over southern Africa. Spatio-temporal characteristics of the Mascarene High investigated in this study span the period 1985-2014 and 2071-2100, using NCEP-NCAR reanalysis datasets for present-day climate observations and the Conformal-Cubic Atmospheric Model (CCAM) for future projections. The Mascarene High is analysed using mean sea level pressure (MSLP) extracted from ECMWF ERA-interim monthly reanalysis data. The Mascarene High is also subjected to Principal Components Analysis, depicting eastern displacements of the weather system to be dominant for weather and climate fluctuations over southern Africa. The Mascarene High migrates south (north) during austral summer (winter) and is centred over the eastern Indian Ocean in summer in connection with the Indian Ocean Subtropical Dipole. Event scale analysis is also employed for investigating Mascarene High blocking and induced anomalous weather. Mascarene High blocking leads to anomalous rainfall events over southern Africa associated with tropical cyclones, cut-off lows and cloud bands. There is also a vital geographical variability of the Mascarene High development, distribution and movement in the South Indian Ocean at the different time-scales. Projections of the Mascarene High indicate a shift in mean location as a result of future expansion and intensification. This projected expansion and intensification is expected to shift tropical cyclone trajectories equatorward, with the baroclinic structure of cold fronts expected to shift poleward affecting changes in the weather and climate of southern Africa. This finding is important as it projects changes in weather and climate conditions over southern Africa in a changing climate due to increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Analýza rytmů a proměna místa: Náplavka Rašínovo nábřeží / Rhythmanalysis and the changes of the place: Rašín riverside embankmentKravka, Jan January 2020 (has links)
This thesis deals with the analysis of rhythms (Lefebvre 2004) at Prague's Rašín Embankment (náplavka Rašínova nábřeží). This thesis would also focus on the observation of the spatiotemporal changes of this place in a long term. I carried out qualitative interviews with actors who co-create the rhythms of this place with their managerial and entrepreneurial activities and added them to long-term continual visits and sensory perception of the place, along with the study of specialized historical publications. The analysis of the rhythms based on long-term participant observation was followed by an interpretation of what they actually tell us about everyday social reality of this place at specific times and how this space is produced by those rhythms. In this thesis I also used related concepts like chronotope (Crang, 2001; Osman, Mulíček, Seidenglanz, 2010, 2015) and chronopolis (Osman, Mulíček, Seidenglanz 2011, 2017). This thesis shows that nowadays the eurhythmia of this place is created by non- disruptive movement of local visitors such as walkers, runners and cyclists along the embankment, by regularly organized farmers' market and other events as well as by the flow of the Vltava river and its rhythms, by all means of transport on the local roads, bridges and the Vltava river.
