Folded Intersection: a performing arts center

Guo, Ying Ping 28 October 2003 (has links)
This project proposes a performing arts center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a 170-year old industrial city. As part of the city revitalization, the design seeks to build up a "stage", and create a piece of edge at the city's northern boundary. Two folded bands, one made of skeletal steel and surfaced with copper connecting the river and the mountainous landscape beyond with the city, the other made of reinforced concrete folded to form a spatial intersection housing a series of activities: performing, spectating, and exhibiting. A curved metal screened circulation wall opens at the bottom to allow the copper band to pass as an entrance into the lobby to develop its folded intersection. Through it, an industrial stack in the middle of the site is isolated from busy city, and anchored with the building as a monument. Along the west side, an additional element characterized as the education box hovers over the ground, with unobstructed views of the river and the old steel bridge on one end, and the green hill on the other. / Master of Architecture

Lighting design for A little going away party

Chene', Stephen Pennington January 1983 (has links)
This Thesis presents the various materials that evolved while designing the lighting for the Theatre Arts - University Theatre's production of A Little Going Away Party. Through various meetings with production staff the design objectives and styles of the premiere production were established. We determined that the production was dealing with an upcoming death in a positive manner and that the production elements should reflect this. The lighting design created a coolly lit cellar that was warmed progressively to reflect the growth of one of the characters as the story developed. The design also aided in drawing the audience's focus to different areas of the stage when action and dialogue required it. / M.F.A.

Leriche, Jérôme January 2010 (has links)

The work on sustainability in the use and disposal stage of a garment’s life cycle : The perspective of three Swedish clothing companies

RYTTINGER, LINNÉA, HOLTMAAT, KRISTEL January 2014 (has links)
Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify how clothing companies are striving for sustainability within their product life cycle; to which extent these companies are working on the sustainability of the use and disposal stage; and their willingness to interfere more in these stages by improving the use and disposal habits of their customers by offering care, repair and end of use services. Research questions: What activities are the clothing companies undertaking in order to improve the sustainability of the use and disposal stage? o How are the clothing companies communicating correct use, maintenance and disposal of their products to consumers? o What are the difficulties the clothing companies are facing in their efforts to become more engaged in the use and disposal stage? Method: The research was conducted with an inductive approach, by collecting secondary data from previous studies and theories, and by accumulating primary data from semi-structured interviews with the CSR coordinator of Didriksons, the Director of Sustainability of Haglöfs and the CSR manager of Nudie Jeans. Findings: Throughout the study acknowledgements have been received about the ongoing activities, the possible difficulties, and the communication in regards to the three clothing companies work on sustainability in the use and disposal stage. The results pointed out the differences between the companies concerning the ways of offering services in the use and disposal stage, and their ways of communicating these services to consumers. The key findings showed that the companies find consumer education important, however each company could improve their communication towards consumers in some of the discussed stages. Governmental support and more advanced recycling technologies are of importance in order to facilitate the aim of creating a more sustainable use and disposal stage.

Unlimited passion: the opposing schools of stage violence in Shakespeare and Kane

Brasherfons, Lukas 01 May 2017 (has links)
William Shakespeare and Sarah Kane are playwrights who for drastically different reasons have left indelible impacts upon the theatrical world. A key factor in each of their plays is the presentation of violence. Shakespeare uses violence for observable, orthodox reasons of driving the plot forward, while Kane uses it for sensory effect, social commentary, and for subverting traditional narrative expectations. This study examines how violence and fighting work as dramaturgical tools in these playwrights’ work, by individual examination, juxtaposition, and the use of other pieces of drama to inform these two differing schools of theatrical violence.

Hur ser jag ut? : En studie om hur svenska kvinnor framställer sig på Twitter / How do I look? : A study of how Swedish women present themselves on Twitter

Lindholm, Sofia, Sätherberg, Jessica January 2011 (has links)

A research on the relationship between visualized service backstage and consumer¡¦s perceived value in service encounter.

Hsieh, Ming-Pei 20 June 2006 (has links)
Grove and Fisk ¡]1983¡^ had used the noun and idea of drama performance in the theater to compare the offering of service, such attendants as known as performer, customers as known as audience, and separate the front and back stage of service encounter clearly. At the same time, they offer the structure to easily understand the process of the wholly service contact and to help estimate the influence of each important link of service contact. So, this research focused on ¡§perceived value¡¨ of customer experiences through which, the ¡§visualized service backstage¡¨ in the service contact promotes the interaction of consumers and suppliers. Moreover, this study used the involvement of the back stage information and attention of attendants¡¦ appearance to moderate consumer experiences. The results showed that ¡§visualized service backstage¡¨ has positive influence on ¡§perceived value¡¨ with different levels, and customers have more consciousness on ¡§experience value¡¨. Actually the service with ¡§visualized service backstage¡¨ can really improve customers¡¦ perceived value. It not only can strengthen consumers¡¦ experience value, but also promote other different values of consumers. In fact, if service providers can use this advantage to create more perfect service performance by which the front stage and the back stage fully support. And it could bring to people more different service value than others. In addition, through the analysis of this study and real practices, it can help the service providers understand which value is the key factor to be attention for offering visualized service backstage.

Simulations for thermodynamic analyses of transcritical carbon dioxide refrigeration cycle and reheat dehumidification air conditioning cycle

Brown, Mark 05 May 2006 (has links)
Carbon dioxide is a natural refrigerant that has been considered for certain refrigeration and air conditioning applications. The coefficient of performance (COP) of carbon dioxide cycles is low compared to classical vapor compression cycles. The aim of this portion of the thesis is to present a thermodynamic analysis of carbon dioxide cycles in order to evaluate the potential performance of a refrigeration cycle using carbon dioxide. A thermodynamic model for the cycle is proposed which can simulate the operation of a carbon dioxide refrigeration cycle. This model takes into account the practical effects of the thermo-physical properties of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant in a trans-critical cycle. One and two-stage compression processes were considered for comparison purposes. A sensitivity analysis has been conducted so that cycle performance can be estimated. The effect of cycle components on system capacity and cycle performance was investigated. The second portion of the thesis deals with the concept of reheat air conditioning, and looks at the performance of different reheat cycles. The thesis looks at reheat systems that utilize different placements of the reheat coil. The overall performance of these reheat systems is then calculated. These systems require no additional electric power to reheat the air after it is cooled and dehumidified in the evaporator. Instead, they use heat from the condenser heat exchanger to reheat the air during partial load conditions. Four different reheat configurations are discussed and analyzed to determine performance levels. Visual Basic programs were written for each of the four cycles to simulate the different configurations and to evaluate key performance parameters. Graphs were developed based on these programs, where critical variables were changed to monitor trends in coefficient of performance. The thermodynamic cycle of each reheat configuration is developed, with equations presented with figures depicting the cycles. Refrigerant 134a was used in the programs throughout the reheat section of the thesis. The reheat coefficient of performance is used as the basis for cycle comparison. The relative performance of the four cycles is illustrated in the figures and explained in the Results and Discussion section at the end of chapter 3.
