Probiotics as a Treatment for Increased Nighttime Activity in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta) Displaying Self-Injurious Behavior

Stanwicks, Lauren L 07 November 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a behavioral pathology seen in a small percentage of humans and non-human primates. In one previous study, macaques with SIB had more sleep disruption than controls, but observations were limited. Two studies were conducted: a baseline study to investigate nighttime activity in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) displaying SIB and controls, and a probiotic study to assess probiotic Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 for high nighttime activity. Subjects were 13 rhesus macaques, 5 with SIB (3 females; 1 SIB). Videocapture of Nighttime Activity (VNRA) was developed to record in complete darkness. IR-receptive webcams were connected to a laptop running ISPYCONNECT, software which recorded movement. Subjects were observed during the entire lights-off period (8pm-7am). Measures included total movement time (TMT), movement in hour 1 (HR1) and hour 11 (HR11), and number of videos. In the baseline, SIB subjects had higher TMT (pBifidobacterium infantis 35624 had no effect on sleep disruption, and also that increased nighttime activity seems to be a persistent characteristic of SIB subjects. It is unknown if increased nighttime activity affects SIB subjects; it may result in elevated SIB, or the SIB pathology could result in sleep disruption.

Discriminative Control of Behavioral Variability in Video Game Play

Arias, Gabriela Isabel 05 1900 (has links)
Creativity can be a useful skill in today's classrooms and workplaces. When individuals talk about creativity, it's unclear what the controlling variables are when we tact behavior as "creative." Research in understanding the processes behind behaviors that are considered "creative" would assist in identifying functional relations and provide insight on how to teach creativity. Since creativity is often described as doing something different from the norm, behavioral variability may be a potential aspect of creativity. This study aimed to replicate previous findings by investigating the effects of discrimination training in a multiple schedule of varied and repetitive responding in the context of a video game. Participants played through a 2D online video game made in Bloxels. Different alternating-colored platforms served as the discriminative stimuli for the vary and repeat components. Three parameters of variability were measured (e.g., left jumps, right jumps, and double jumps). The results of the study indicate that participants were able to learn the discrimination of when to repeat and vary their responses depending on which colored platform they encountered.

Jižanské ženství: příběh za jižanskou kráskou / Southern Womanhood: A Story Behind the Southern Belle

Petrušová, Gabriela January 2015 (has links)
The present MA thesis focuses on the development of the archetype of the Southern Belle in the selected works of American fiction, namely John Pendleton Kennedy's Swallow Barn, William Faulkner's Sanctuary and Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. The main task is to explore how the archetype of the Southern Belle was constructed and (if) transgressed at different times in the American literary tradition from the period of antebellum South to the era of the Southern Renaissance. Since the archetype of the Southern Belle is connected with the white upper class society it will be also discussed in this respect. By comparing texts from different historical periods I want to compare the different nature of cultural and social conditions that contributed and informed the meaning and the function of the Southern Belle. Moreover, by selecting Southern woman writer and Southern male writers respectively I want to compare female and male perspective on the literary representation of the Southern Belle. The first chapter briefly addresses the development of the American South as a region with a distinct social structure and cultural values and attempts to position the figure of the Southern Belle within that socio-historical context. Chapters three, four and five introduce and analyze the archetype of the...

Vývoj reprezentace LGBT menšiny v počítačových příběhových RPG hrách a přijímání homosexuální tématiky hráči a herními vývojáři / Progress in the representation of the LGBT minority in RPG videogames and accepting of queer topics by gamers and game-developers

Moravec, Ondřej January 2014 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Progress of representation of the LGBT minority in RPG-story-based PC games and accepting the homosexual themes by gamers and game developers" deals with new way of representation of LGBT minority via videogames. While traditional media as film or literature are able to narrate only by the linear way, with the development of RPG genre the new ergodic literature appeals. This style of narration has many ways which you can follow - and one of them is also the way of playing with LGBT character - the way which can be close for some other players. Work combines a few views on this problem - how does the language of videogames support such ideas? How game developers are interested in this matter? And what about the homosexual gamers - what do they want? This works also include the analysis of the video games, which changed the view on the representation of LGBT minority in videogames (Mass Effect I-III, Dragon Age I-II). The goal of this work is to offer the first compact text on this topic in Czech but even also in world context. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Volba vzdělávací dráhy v adolescenci: role genderových stereotypů a identifikace s matematikou / Career choice in adolescence: role of gender stereotypes and identification with mathematics

Louda, Petr January 2015 (has links)
Career choice in education and the acquired/achieved level of education are factors that influence social status of men and women. Despite the fact that women, on average, currently achieve a higher level of education than men, women's marketplace status and their height of salary often do not correspond to it. One of the reasons is a low proportion of women in mathematics-related subjects. The aim of this research was to investigate the role of gender stereotypes and identification with mathematics in career choice. In the theoretical part of this thesis, I introduce the basic terms related to gender and gender stereotypes, the role gender plays in institutions and the potential causes of gender differences in the performance in mathematics. In the empirical part, I analyse data from a questionnaire study investigating career choice, level of identification with mathematics, attitudes to courses in the curriculum and the level of gender stereotypes in Czech adolescents. The results suggest few differences between girls and boys in these areas. However, the level of identification with mathematics and the level of gender stereotypes in the career area are related to the educational career choice.

Přímá volba?: mediální obraz kandidátek na českou prezidentku v roce 2013. / Direct elections? Media reflection of female candidates for president in 2013

Vránová, Hana January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this work is to critically look at how the female presidential candidates in 2013 were reflected in the Czech press and assess whether that somehow differed from the way the male candidates were presented. Presidential elections were a milestone in the history of the Czech Republic, when the head of state was elected directly by the citizens. We pose a question whether this election was also "direct" and equal in the reflection of the media, or underlined gender stereotypes. The axis of the work is the display of gender in the media, especially in relation to women in high-ranking positions in politics or female politicians aspiring for them. This reflection is viewed through the lens of feminist media criticism. The theoretical part is complemented by an introduction to political communication, Czech and international studies and the current situation of women in Czech politics. Then I will present the paper's methodology. In the analytical part, by using quantitative content analysis I will focus on the presentation of female and male candidates in five Czech newspapers. There will also be a qualitative analysis of selected articles interesting from a gender perspective. Key words Female president, president, elections, gender, gender stereotypes, feminism, media, media reflection
