Investigation of the Effects of Social Experience on Snapping Intensity in Equus caballus Foals

McCusker, Matthew Erik 07 May 2003 (has links)
This study attempted to examine three aspects of Equus caballus foal snapping behavior. First, it suggested that the previous theoretical explanation for snapping established by behavioral researchers was incorrect. Second, as a means of suggesting an alternative hypothesis, this study proposed that snapping behavior could be a modified play response that was elicited when foals were confused by the complex social signals displayed by conspecifics. Finally, this project tested the aforementioned hypothesis by recording interactions between foals and conspecifics and analyzing the snapping intensity with each subject's previous level of social experience. There were two indicators utilized to establish social experience. First, the "age" of the foal was employed as a measure of overall life experience and development. Second, the number of hours per day the foal was exposed to conspecifics gave an effective measure of the amount of time the subject had an opportunity to learn the complex Equine visual communication (referred to as "out-time"). / Master of Science

Komparace vybraných podacích deníků z let 1890-1950 / A Comparison of Selected Submission Diaries over 1890-1950

Kantorová, Alexandra January 2021 (has links)
This master's thesis, "A comparison of selected submission diaries from 1890 ̶1950," provides a detailed and complex analysis of selected submission diaries. The objective of this study is to compare selected submission diaries in various types of institutions. Furthermore, it examines how the given submission diaries changed over time within these institutions, who recorded this information, and what information was considered important in certain periods. The research is based on a study of archives from the following selected years: 1898, 1908, 1928, 1938 and 1948. In order to achieve the aim of this thesis, it was necessary to visit the National Archives in Prague, State Regional Archives in Prague, Prague City Archives, State County Archives in Beroun, Charles University Archives and National Museum archives. The study comprises a detailed internal and external analysis of the individual books. Interest is taken not only in changes on the surface, such as bent page corners, but the key concerns also include, for example, observations on the usage of official stamps in the individual books. Keywords Submission diary, submission protocol, book, institution, archive, essential registration needs

Essays on the microstructure of the market pre-opening period

Johnson, Ike Jay January 2010 (has links)
This thesis consists of three related essays that examine investors' order submission strategies during the pre-opening period on the Malta Stock Exchange. The pre-opening is a period of liquidity formation and price discovery characterised by the absence of trade execution. The three essays collectively examine the information content of the order book in relation to: the intensity of order submissions, the aggressiveness of investors' order placement strategy and the determination of returns generated over the pre-opening period. The first essay empirically investigates if public information concerning the current state of the order book impacts the duration between order arrivals. Utilizing an augmented ACD model, the research reveals that the information which can be inferred from the characteristics of incoming orders has a more significant impact on the intensity of buy order submissions as compared to sell order submissions during the pre-opening period. Furthermore, prospective buyers appear to be more responsive to liquidity provided by the sell side than the reverse. Locked or crossed order submissions tend to increases (decreases) the intensity of order flow on the own (opposite) side of the order book, corroborating Cao et al. (2000) that such order-types contain informative signals about the fundamental value of the asset. The second essay analyses the impact of limit order book information on the aggressiveness observed in the submission, revision and cancellation of limit orders during the market pre-opening period. The empirical results indicate that the aggressiveness of order submissions and forward price revisions react both to the existing and subsequent changes in the execution probability at market opening, driven in part by the depth on either side of the order book. The aggressiveness of order cancellations increases on both sides of the order book when the depth at the top of the ask order book increases. In addition, the results suggest that the order book height and size of the inside spread impacts the aggressiveness of order submissions, revisions and cancellations. The third essay studies the contribution of the pre-opening period to the daily price discovery process and the factors that impact the return generated over this period. The results indicate that approximately one third of daily price discovery occurs in the pre-opening period. In addition, the impact of relative depth and height of the overnight and opening order book are concentrated at the top of the order book. Furthermore, cumulative changes to relative depth attributable to order submissions most significantly impact the opening returns of less actively traded stocks. The results show a strong relationship between opening returns and cumulative changes in the relative height along the order book attributable to order submissions, cancellations and forward and backward price revisions over the pre-opening period.

Identiteten efter 9/11 : Religion, commemoration och nationell identitet i romanerna Falling Man och The Submission. / Identity after 9/11 : Religion, Commemoration and National Identity in Falling Man and The Submission.

Svensson, Emil January 2015 (has links)

Do it Yourself: A Content Analysis of Free Pornographic Tube Sites

Kubichan, Jill 06 May 2013 (has links)
In 2008 it was reported that there are approximately 28,258 internet users viewing pornography every second, and that men look at pornography online more than any other subject matter (Eberstadt 2009). Pornography has become a primary tool of sex education for young men (Bowater 2011) with the average age of first exposure being age 11 (Stefan 2012). However, research on viewer understanding and interpretation of the images is scarce. What are boys learning about sexuality as they watch pornography? Do they use pornography as a ‘how-to’ manual expressing a desire to mimic the onscreen act or do they use pornography as a general stimulant expressing a generalized pleasure, interpreting the act in alternative ways? The pro-pornography stance stresses the agency of the viewer, meaning the viewer has the ability to access a broad array of content creating a poly-semiotic or figurative experience. The anti-pornography stance stresses the agency of the industry, meaning the industry pushes a dominant design creating a mono-semiotic or literal experience. The purpose of this study is to look at how viewers of online pornography interpret what they see. By analyzing viewer comments sampled from free pornographic tube sites, this study seeks to understand the extent of viewer agency; do men interpret pornographic images literally or figuratively?

Educar para a submissão: o caso Opus Dei / Educate for submission the case Opus Dei

Silva, Marcio Fernandes da 02 March 2009 (has links)
The central idea of this work is to present the educational philosophy of Opus Dei´s practices and critically analyze those practices. The main contribution of this work shall be the demonstration that the Opus Deis concept of education has as primary goal the production of fully submitted individuals. The methods used by the institution to achieve this goal will also be presented. The works nature is theoretical, but also includes the analysis of many testimonies of real cases. The object of research is composed by Opus Deis texts (written by its founder, the spanish Josemaría Escrivá, and by some of his followers) and by the so called informal education of Opus Dei, witch are activities that usually take place inside the institutions houses. The objective, therefore, is to present a scientific analysis of the Opus Deis educational practices and its consequences on the individual. The theoretic references are authors who have studied the fields of prudentia, language and psycho-sociology: Tomas de Aquino, Karl Popper and Erich Fromm. The methodological procedures consist on the theoretical research and on the analysis of testimonies. The technical-operational procedure consist on the analysis of Opus Deis texts and testimonies of ex-members.

Identity, power, and ritual "rape play" in the S/M community

Unknown Date (has links)
Rape play is a type of consensual, ritualistic domination and submission, developed and enacted in a sado-masochistic (S/M) sex culture, which involves the appearance of force. There are two feminist theories that can be employed in a feminist analysis of rape play: dominance/radical feminism and libertarian/"sex positive" feminism. Libertarian/"sex positive" feminism holds that S/M, including rape play, is potentially compatible with feminism because the power dynamic between a dominant/"rapist" and submissive/"victim" does not draw on either practitioners' actual social identity and the power it possesses or lacks. Dominance/radical feminism argues that gender, which is socially constructed, can best be understood as a form of sexualized domination and submission, so social identity could not be dissociated from power in S/M. My reading of guidebooks and narratives about rape play suggests that the dominance/radical feminist position is more accurate in the case of rape play, though not necessarily all of S/M culture. / by Megan Halena. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. The Effect of Gonadal Hormones on Agonistic Behavior in Previously Defeated Female and Male Syrian Hamsters

Solomon, Matia B 26 May 2006 (has links)
Following social defeat, male hamsters exhibit behavioral changes characterized by a breakdown of normal territorial aggression and an increase in submissive/defensive behaviors in the presence of a non-aggressive intruder (NAI). We have termed this phenomenon conditioned defeat (CD). By contrast, only a small subset of defeated females exhibit submissive/defensive behavior in the presence of a NAI. We hypothesized that fluctuations in gonadal hormones might contribute to differences in the display of submissive behavior in intact female hamsters. Following social defeat, proestrous females (higher endogenous estradiol) were more likely to display conditioned defeat compared with diestrous 1 (lower endogenous estradiol) females. This finding suggests that there is an estrous cycle-dependent fluctuation in the display of CD in female hamsters and suggests that increased estradiol might contribute to increased submissive behavior. We then demonstrated that ovariectomized females given estradiol prior to CD testing exhibited significantly higher submissive behavior in the presence of a NAI suggesting that estradiol increases the expression of CD in female hamsters. We have also shown that castrated males that were singly housed for four weeks displayed significantly more submissive behavior than did their intact counterparts. Interestingly, castrated and intact males that were singly housed for 10 days prior to behavioral testing displayed similar behavior during CD testing. Together these data suggest that androgens and isolation modulate the display of CD in male hamsters. Finally, we examined brain activation following CD testing in defeated males and females (in diestrus 1 and proestrus). Defeated male and proestrous females exhibited increased Fos activation in the dorsal lateral septum and hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus relative to defeated diestrous 1 females. Diestrous 1 females exhibited increased Fos expression in the lateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis compared with both defeated groups. Collectively, these data suggest that gonadal hormones and duration of individual housing modulate the display of CD in female and male hamsters and that those animals which display CD exhibit differences in patterns of neuronal activation than do those that do not display CD.
