Välbefinnandet hos migrant ungdomar / The well-being of migrant youth

Musawi, Aya, Sadek, Noray January 2023 (has links)
Migration is a contemporary social issue that brings about major changes for people. Migration often carries several mental health risk factors , usually based on circumstances faced by migrants in the receiving country. The purpose of the study is to describe the well-being of immigrant youth who have migrated from the Middle East to Sweden. The study adopts a social psychology approach using theories of symbolic interactionism, sense of coherence and well-being. The ten respondents who took part in the study were interviewed with the help of qualitative semi structured interviews. Selection criteria for the study is limited to respondents who had Middle eastern origins and must have lived in Sweden for at least five years. The results of the study show that most respondents experience a form of exclusion, which led them to isolate themselves. This in turn has affected their self-esteemand well-being. Furthermore, the results also showed that the respondents describe that the adaptation process has been challenging at the beginning of the arrival in the recipient country, which has shown potential negative impacts on the respondent’s well-being and health. / <p>Stavningskorrigerad titel: Välbefinnandet hos migrantungdomar</p>

Eddy current defect response analysis using sum of Gaussian methods

Earnest, James William 12 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation is a study of methods to automatedly detect and produce approximations of eddy current differential coil defect signatures in terms of a summed collection of Gaussian functions (SoG). Datasets consisting of varying material, defect size, inspection frequency, and coil diameter were investigated. Dimensionally reduced representations of the defect responses were obtained utilizing common existing reduction methods and novel enhancements to them utilizing SoG Representations. Efficacy of the SoG enhanced representations were studied utilizing common Machine Learning (ML) interpretable classifier designs with the SoG representations indicating significant improvement of common analysis metrics.

An Identification of Themes in The Charted Course of the Church in Education

Cannon, John Morrison 28 August 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis operates under the assumption that the earliest form of mass communication is the religious sermon as recorded in the Bible. This thesis looks to Bormann, who used a sacred to secular approach and found similarities between Puritan sermons and the rhetoric of political speeches. This research reverses that order and moves from secular to sacred by looking first at well-known American speeches and then at landmark addresses to Seminary and Institutes of Religion teachers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—and specifically at Clark's The Charted Course of the Church in Education. This single sermon, delivered in 1938, continues to shape the Seminary and Institutes program after more than seven decades. With the opening of the first LDS Seminary in 1912, the foundations of the program were laid. Yet, each generation seemed to drift away from those foundations enough that a realignment was needed. In 1938, the constitution of Church education was given in the form of the Charted Course and it has served as the realigning document ever since. Subsequent realignments occurred in 1954, and 1963. Since 1976, the Charted Course has been referenced regularly, particularly during the annual Evening with a General Authority address to Seminary and Institute teachers and, consequently, since that time, no great drift has occurred that required another major realignment. Instead, the Charted Course is now used consistently to prevent drift, not only to correct it.

Symbolic interactionism: insights into the creative processes of fifth-grade music students

Jyawook, Alia Mae Margaret 05 April 2023 (has links)
Symbolic interactionism has scarcely been used as a framework in the field of music education. The purpose of this case study was to understand the verbal and nonverbal interactions of four fifth-grade general music students while they collaborated with peers to compose original songs. Through the lens of symbolic interactionism, data from video and audio recordings, student artifacts, and researcher memos were examined to answer the following research questions: 1) How do fifth-grade general music students interact with their peers during composition activities in a constructivist learning environment? 2) How do fifth-grade general music students self-indicate and create shared meanings through verbal and nonverbal symbolic interactions? A within and cross-case analysis revealed that students interacted with their peers through communicative acts, forming friendships, nonverbal gestures, and forming social roles. The participants self-indicated and created shared meanings as a result of shared responsibilities, musical dialogue, improvisation, and symbolic exclusion. Findings suggested that fifth-grade students develop social roles and engage in follower and leader behaviors in situations where teacher scaffolding is purposefully suspended. The results of the research contribute to an existing body of literature regarding fifth-grade general music students’ abilities to self-direct their own learning during collaborative activities.

Quantitative Analysis of Exploration Schedules for Symbolic Execution / Kvantitativ analys av utforskningsscheman för Symbolisk Exekvering

Kaiser, Christoph January 2017 (has links)
Due to complexity in software, manual testing is not enough to cover all relevant behaviours of it. A different approach to this problem is Symbolic Execution. Symbolic Execution is a software testing technique that tests all possible inputs of a program in the hopes of finding all bugs. Due to the often exponential increase in possible program paths, Symbolic Execution usually cannot exhaustively test a program. To nevertheless cover the most important or error prone areas of a program, search strategies that prioritize these areas are used. Such search strategies navigate the program execution tree, analysing which paths seem interesting enough to execute and which to prune. These strategies are typically grouped into two categories, general purpose searchers, with no specific target but the aim to cover the whole program and targeted searchers which can be directed towards specific areas of interest. To analyse how different searching strategies in Symbolic Execution affect the finding of errors and how they can be combined to improve the general outcome, the experiments conducted consist of several different searchers and combinations of them, each run on the same set of test targets. This set of test targets contains amongst others one of the most heavily tested sets of open source tools, the GNU Coreutils. With these, the different strategies are compared in distinct categories like the total number of errors found or the percentage of covered code. With the results from this thesis the potential of targeted searchers is shown, with an example implementation of the Pathscore-Relevance strategy. Further, the results obtained from the conducted experiments endorse the use of combinations of search strategies. It is also shown that, even simple combinations of strategies can be highly effective. For example, interleaving strategies can provide good results even if the underlying searchers might not perform well by themselves.

Ekmark, Sofia January 2013 (has links)
From my own experience as a school counselor I have learned that the decision making processes in terms of supporting and helping the students is extremely hard and very individual. In different situations, a different approach between individuals is present. I thought about which factors effects the school counselor’s way of handling problematic situations. I soon realized that the individual has a great effect on the work itself. This brought my attention and I found it necessary to research the area more. This thesis is about the counselors in school and their assessments. The main focus is on differences in the decision making processes, if differences appear and why.By using theories that focus on interpretation of actions this thesis presents an insight in the school counselors work and provide the readers an explanation model to why differences appear. The theories used in this thesis are symbolic interactionism, phenomenology and social construction. These three theories are closely connected to one another and the selected keyword of each theory works as the foundation of the analysis. The main result of the study showed that interpretation of the situation and what references the interpreter has is critical to the result of actions. Many different factors however effects the interpretations based on the individual, such as emotional intelligence and the complexity of a professional relationship.

Intersexuality, and its medical and social implications

Danielsson, Magnus January 2006 (has links)
This is a theoretical study of intersexuality and of its medical and social implications. My interest of inquiry includes both exploring, describing and explaining. One could say that this study is a form of qualitative analysis of contents. The aim of the study is to fill a gap and to raise awareness of the notion intersex. The conclusions show that social models of explanation to today’s paradigm of intervention are valid.

IT ALSO HAPPENS TO MEN! A QUANTITATIVE STUDY ABOUT MYTHS AND NORMS REGARDING THE SEXUAL VIOLENCE TOWARDS MEN

Bruhner, Christian January 2013 (has links)
Bruhner, C. It also happens to men! A Quantitative study about myths and norms regarding the sexual violence towards men. Project for a one year master degree in Criminology 15 hp. Malmö University: Faculty of health and society, Department of Criminology, 2013.Men who suffered from sexual violence are a phenomenon which gets extremely little attention in the research of social science. It is unexplored and in an almost desperate need of data, particularly quantitative data. The aim of this study was to test the myths which lay the ground for the norms about the sexual violence against men on a grander sample to see if they are confirmed or rejected. The myths that were tested are based on previous research and resulted in four different myths; definitions of the sexual violence against men – characterized by severe violence, threats and intoxication by a male homosexual perpetrator. The subsequent consequences and sanctions – the victimized men are met with negative social sanctions and strong distrust, do not react strongly to the incident and do not report to the police. Perception of masculinity – men are supposed to be physically and psychically strong, heterosexual and have the ability to defend themselves and can therefore not be raped. Characterisations about the victim in form of a lack of masculinity – a victimized man are physically and psychically weak, homosexual and are often blamed for the rape himself. These myths were tested through a quantitative survey which 160 students replied. The respondents rejected largely all of the myths, particularly the blaming of the victim and the perception of masculinities – the two myths that showed most impact on the attitude towards the subject as a whole. The study showed that if you have a view on masculinity close to the stereotypical norm, you are also more likely to confirm the myths about the sexual violence against men. The study also showed that older individuals, actively religious people and people of other origin than Swedish tend to be more prone to confirm the myths. The results are analysed throughout Bourdieu’s concepts about symbolic capital between dominant and dominated.
