Cette thèse se propose de transcrire et analyser dans le but de créer une typologie de l’hymnodie syriaque de l’Église Maronite selon la tradition de l’illustre chantre de l’Ordre Antonin Maronite Père Maroun Mrad. L’Église Maronite, étant une église catholique orientale, elle a conservé et l’union avec l’Église Universelle et son identité et tradition musicale et liturgique. L’objet de mes analyses est l’ensemble des hymnes enregistrées par la voix du Père Maroun Mrad, un des porteurs de la tradition orale au sein de l’Ordre Antonin Maronite. Cet enregistrement est produit par le Père Ivar Schmutz-Schwaller, de l’Université de Cologne, lors de son séjour au Liban en 1972. La méthodologie consiste à produire un diagramme musical de chaque pièce, qui contient toutes les informations utiles à l’analyse. En fait dans ce diagramme on voit l’ensemble de l’échelle utilisée et par conséquent le genre (Zalzalien, Hijaz ou Diatonique). Avec des signes adéquats, on met en relief les degrés d’appui de la pièce (note initiale, teneur, finale temporaire et finale) ainsi que le nombre demouvement (conjoint ou non, ascendant ou descendant) qui les lie. D’après l’ensemble des diagrammes, j’ai choisi la relation finale-teneur comme critère pour la typologie que l’on s’est promis d’établir. En effet, les pièces sont classés en type 1 si leur teneur correspond à leur finale, en type 2 si l’intervalle finale-teneur est une seconde, en type 3 si l’intervallefinale-teneur est une tierce, en type 4 si l’intervalle finale-teneur est une quarte ou en type 5 si cet intervalle est une quinte. Cette typologie sert à classifier ces hymnes pour mieux les repérer et analyser d’autres aspects. / This research wants to transcribe and analyze the Syriac Hymnody of the Maronite Church in order to create a typology. The Maronite Church has conserved its musical and liturgical identity along with its communion with the Universal Church. I based my work on some recording done by Father Ivar Schmutz-Schwaller, from the University of Cologne. In his field trip to Lebanon in 1972, he recorded Father Maroun Mrad, a cantor from the Antonine Maronite Order, while he was singing capella the whole repertoire of the Syriac hymns. The methodology applied here consists in creating a diagram of musical analysis that can summarize the whole piece and simplify the analysis. In fact, each diagram contains all the degrees of the scale and determines its genre (Zalzalian, Hijaz or Diatonic). With the help of some signs, we indicate the basic notes (initial, tenor, temporary ending note and the ending note of the piece) and the number of their movements. With the help of these diagrams, we chose to consider the relation between the “tenor” of the piece and its ending note as criteria for this classification. In fact the pieces that has their tenor equal to their ending note belong to type 1. In the type 2, the interval between the tenor and the ending note is a second, in type 3 a third, in type 4 a fourth and in type 5 a fifth. This typology would help us to better classify these hymns and, furthermore, to analyze other aspects of them.

The question of Syriac influence upon early Arabic translations of the Aphorisms of Hippocrates

This thesis takes up the question of the part played by Syriac sources in the composition of early Arabic translations of the Hippocratic Aphorisms. In it, I compare the four major extant Syriac and Arabic translations of the Aphorisms with continual reference to the content of Syriac lexicons composed by the translator Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq and his students and successors. Through detailed treatments of both the definitions and translations of scores of individual Greek terms found in these sources, as well as through analysis of the translations of the Aphorisms, I weigh the relative importance of Greek and Syriac scholarship for Ḥunayn's translation praxis. In doing so, I specify the value of the Syriac lexicons for the study of Greek-to-Arabic translation while clarifying several outstanding issues in the broader history of Syriac and Arabic medicine.

The development of the night office in the Šḥimō according to the manuscripts of Mor Gabriel monastery (1474-1900) : A study in liturgical change

This thesis tries to answer the question of how the night office sluthō d-lilyō has developed in the Syrian Orthodox Antiochian tradition as it is expressed in the Syrian Orthodox prayerbook of ܫܚܝܡܐ Šḥimō - which is the prayerbook used on ordinary weekdays and Saturdays throughout the liturgical year except for the great Lent. One of the main liturgical scholars of the 20th century, Robert F. Taft S.J. (+ 2018), refined the methods of Anton Baumstark (+ 1948) and Juan Mateos S.J. (+ 2003), and studied how the Liturgy and Liturgy of the Hours have grown during the centuries. This thesis uses the method(s) of Taft and studies how the night office has grown by comparing the structure of this office in six manuscripts from the Monastery of Mor Gabriel in Tur-’Abdin – one of the major monasteries in the Syrian Orthodox world. The oldest manuscript in our study is dated to 1474 C.E. (perhaps the oldest dated MS of the Šḥimō in the entire world). Few studies have looked into how the Šḥimō tradition has changed during the centuries and in this thesis we will take the night office as an example of liturgical growth and development.

Historical Aspects of the Story of Euphemia and the Goth

In this thesis, we focus on the Story of Euphemia and the Goth, a hybrid literary text written in the second half of the fifth century. Since there is no holistic work on the Story, we undertook the task of examining the text itself, as a systematic examination of the Syriac and the Greek versions of the text itself, as well as the last English translation of the Story, by Francis Burkitt in 1913. We focused on the philological features of the Story and tried to interpret them historically using the standard historical-critical method. By focusing on the philological elements of the Story, we aimed to connect the information with the historical context of the period that the Story allegedly describes (late 4th c.) and the period in which it was written (late 5th c.). Our contextual analysis, which is based on philological features, can be divided into three main aspects. The first aspect examines the historical, military and legal elements of the Story. The second focuses on two Syriac terms: the parmûnârâ' and the fixed expression bnay ḥi're'. More precisely, we attempt tried to recreate the profile of the author of the Story by examining the term parmûnârâ,' and we examined the term bnay ḥi're' both contextually and intertextually, arguing that the term designated people of higher social strata if not the nobility. In addition, we also focus on the socio-political conditions of the fifth century, arguing that the term bnay ḥi're' should not be interpreted simply as f r e e but rather as n o b l e, and we support this thesis with internal evidence from the Story, external evidence taken from the larger literary milieu, as well as the works of philologists and orientalists over the last three centuries. The third aspect of our contextual analysis is related to a philological element that had been overlooked by modern scholarship: the fact that the author of the Story calls Euphemia and Sophia qadîšṯâ', i.e. Saints. Focusing on the text, we examine the validity of this hagiographical feature by examining the Syriac liturgical works of the anti-Chalcedonian Syriac Orthodox Church, i.e. the Syriac menologia, edited by François Nau in 1912. Our discoveries prove the attestation of the Story. The two protagonists of the Story were venerated as Saints by the Syriac-speaking Miaphysites. Through this research, we also discovered that the two protagonists were revered as Saints on the same day that the Chalcedonians celebrated the so-called miracle of the relics of Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon. We argue, therefore, that the Story comes from a Miaphysite milieu. These three aspects form the explanatory framework through which, in the future, we aim to develop a holistic interpretation of the literary themes of the Story as well as the historical context that led to its composition.

Femme à la destinée unique, la Vierge Marie a suscité intérêt, passion et engouement tout au long des siècles de l’Ère chrétienne. Elle a inspiré artistes, écrivains et prédicateurs et sa vie a fait l’objet de récits exemplaires. La Vie de la Vierge traverse l’histoire de la littérature syriaque. Ce ne sont pas moins de 23 manuscrits syro-orientaux qui sont parvenus jusqu’à nous. Relativement récents puisqu’ils ont été copiés de 1243 à 1917 AD, ils plongent leurs racines dans des textes bien plus anciens. Dans un premier volume, la copie d’un manuscrit de la fin du XIIIe siècle, conservé au monastère Notre-Dame des Semences d’Alqoš, dans l’Irak actuel, a été choisie, en raison de son exhaustivité, pour une édition complète et une première traduction en français. Un apparat critique très important puisqu’il concerne 18 manuscrits – 5 manuscrits ne sont malheureusement pas accessibles actuellement – vient compléter ce travail d’édition et permet l’établissement d’un stemma qui met en lumière l’existence de quatre familles de manuscrits, avec un manuscrit singulier, copie d’une version syro-orientale originelle aujourd’hui perdue. Dans un second volume, le commentaire de l’œuvre souligne la singularité de ce texte apocryphe chrétien syro-oriental. Il s’agit bien pour son auteur d’annoncer le Christ Jésus qui, par son incarnation, vient rétablir la création déchue dans son harmonie originelle et racheter l’humanité. Il le fait en présentant la vie de Marie, sa mère. Elle est alors la femme qui transcende toutes époques et tous lieux et devient une incarnation de l’éternel féminin. / A woman with a singular destiny, the Virgin Mary has caused interest, enthusiasm and even passion throughout the centuries of the Christian era. She has inspired artists, writers and preachers; and her life has been the object of narratives to be imitated. The Life of the Virgin can be found over the course of the history of Syriac literature. There are no fewer than 23 Syro-Oriental manuscripts that have come down to us. They are relatively recent. There were copied from 1243 to 1917 AD, with roots in much older texts. In the first volume, a copy of a manuscript from the end of the 13th century, kept at the monastery of Our Lady of the Seeds in Alqoš, in modern day Iraq, has been chosen, because of its exhaustiveness to serve as a complete edition and a first translation into French. It contains a very important critical apparatus since it compares 18 manuscripts, unfortunately, however, 5 manuscripts are not accessible currently. In the second volume, the commentary on the text underlines the uniqueness of this Syro-Oriental Christian apocryphal writing. It is clear that its author wants to announce Jesus Christ who, by his incarnation, comes to restore fallen creation to its original harmony and to redeem humanity. He does this by presenting the life of Mary, his mother. She is then the woman who transcends all times and places and becomes the incarnation of the éternel féminin.

Thematic interviews were carried out with openend questions to acquaint ourselves with the home-care staff as well as some users’ experiences of the care. The three themes used were treatment, adaptation and culture. For the home-care staff the criterieas of selection were that they should work in home-care based in a neighbourhood with a high level of immigrants in conjunction with experience of meeting users with syriac orthodox origin. When it came to the users the criterias of selection were that they should have syriac orthodox origien, be at least 70 years old and be granted home-service.</p><p>The results revealed that the staff experienced difficulties in communication because of deficiency in their own as well as the users’ knowledge of language. Further the results showed that the home-care staff experienced that the interaction with the syriac orthodox users to some extent was insufficient depending on language difficulties which led to that the staff experienced inadequate treatment. The users, in contrary, experienced that the interaction was sufficient and the treatment was satisfying. <p>The key purpose of this research has been trying to understand, and study how assyrian/syriac youth create their identity under the influence of two or several different cultures. We have also looked upon how different factors such as history, religion, language, family and school play a role in the youths identity development.</p><p>We have used a qualitative method in our study where we have interviewed six assyrian/syriac youth. Because of their Christian faith the assyrian/syriac group has been forced to migrate from their countries to different parts around the world. In the new countries the group has been forced to create and live in a diasporaculture. The city Södertälje in Sweden has developed to become a metropole for this ethnic group where they have founded a substantial diasporaculture. In the new countries the assyrian/syriac youth have developed an attitude towards the new country and its culture, which is a mixture of their home culture and the majority communitys. Having to integrate and adjust to two different cultures, while at the same time trying to create ones own identity can sometimes lead to conflicts within the own ethnic group and the majority community. It appeared in the study that the assyrian/syriac youth felt like a duality between the home culture and the culture of the majority community, which felt like living a dual life.</p>
