Modeling Crash Frequencies At Signalized Intersections In Central Flor

A high percentage of highway crashes in the United States occur at intersections. These crashes result in property damage, lost productivity, injury, and even death. Identifying intersections associated with high crash rate is very important to minimize future crashes. The purpose of this study is to develop efficient means to evaluate intersections, which may require safety improvements. The area covered by the analysis in this thesis includes Orange and Seminole Counties and the City of Orlando. The aforementioned counties and city thus represent Central Florida. Each County/City provided data that consisted of signalized intersection drawings that were either in the form of electronic or hard copies, the county's extensive crash database and a list of intersections that underwent modifications during the study period. A total of 786 intersections were used in the analysis and the crash database was made up of 4271 crashes. From the signalized intersection drawings obtained from the county's traffic engineering department, a geometry database was created to classify all intersections by the number of through lanes, number of left turning lanes, Average Annual Daily Traffic and Posted Speed limits on the Major road of the intersection. In this research, crashes and their type, e.g., rear-end, left-turn and angle as well as total crashes were investigated. Numerous models were developed first using the Poisson regression and then using the Negative Binomial approach as the data showed overdispersion. The modeling process aimed to relate geometric and traffic factors to the frequency of crashes at intersections. Expected value analysis tables were also developed to determine if an intersection had an abnormally high number of crashes. These tables can be used in assisting Traffic Engineers in identifying serious safety problems at intersections. The general models illustrated that rear-end crashes were associated with high natural logarithm of AADT on the major road and the number of lanes (major intersections, e.g. 6x4/6x6), whereas AADT on the major road did not affect left-turn crashes. Intersections with the configuration 4x2/6x2 (2 through lanes at the minor roadway) or T intersections as another category experienced an increase in left-turn crashes. Angle crashes were most frequent at one-way intersections especially in the case of 4x4 intersections. Individual models that included interaction terms with one variable at a time concluded that AADT on the major road positively influenced rear-end crashes more compared to angle and left-turn crashes. As the speed increases on the minor road, the left turn crashes are affected more when compared to angle and rear-end crashes, therefore it can be concluded that left-turn crashes are most influenced by the speed limit on the minor road compared to angle crashes and then followed by rear-end crashes. As the total number of left turn lanes increased at the intersection, thereby increasing the size of the intersection, the number of rear-end crashes increased. An overall model that contained natural logarithm of AADT on major road, total number of left turn lanes at the intersection, number of through lanes on the minor road and configuration of the intersection, as independent variables, along with interaction terms, further concluded and supported the individual models that the number of crashes (rear-end, left-turn and angle) increased as the AADT on the major road increased and the number of crashes decreased as the total number of left turn lanes at the intersection increased. Also, crashes increased as the number of through lanes on the minor road increased. The variables' interaction effects with dummies representing rear-end and left-turn crashes in the final model showed that as the AADT on the major road increased, the number of rear-end crashes increased compared to left-turn and angle crashes and also that as the total number of left turn lanes at the intersection increased, the number of left-turn crashes decreased when compared to rear-end and angle crashes. Also the number of rear-end crashes increased at major four leg intersections e.g. 6x4, 6x6 etc. This thesis demonstrated the superiority of Negative Binomial regression in modeling the frequency of crashes at signalized intersections.

Analysis of Embryo Scoring and Comparison of Clinic Performance in In-Vitro Fertilization

Clinical Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) practices seek to make improvements in embryo quality and resultant procedural success rates. There is a significant variance in live birth rates among clinics nationwide. The goal of this thesis is make comparisons of embryo quality among clinics and understand these differences. This analysis focuses on the stage between egg retrieval and embryo transfer. Because the currently accepted embryo scoring methods are not directly proportional to performance, a new scoring methodology is proposed and applied. Data provided by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) consisting of 36,836 patient cycles from 40 anonymous clinics nationwide is considered. After necessary reductions are made, the data is anatomized to link each embryo transferred to an implantation probability. A score is generated for each morphology grouping based on the average implantation rate of that group. This score is used as the basis for clinic comparisons. Top-performing clinics (in terms of live birth rates in patients agedold) are then shown to both produce embryos of higher score and achieve better results from embryos of identical morphology.

METHODS FOR ESTIMATING MULTIREGIONAL INPUT-OUTPUT-TABLES

Purpose – This report aims to address the methods used to obtain multi-regional input-output tables (MRIO-tables). Method – The research focuses on three gravity model of trade methods: simple gravity model estimation, doubly constrained gravity model estimation, and gravity model estimation with calibrated error function minimization. These methods are used for estimating and modelling multiregional trade flows, specifically in the context of MRIO-tables. These methods will be denoted as method 1, method 2 and method 3. Through a comparative analysis, the study focuses on the strengths and limitations of these methods and provides valuable insights for policymakers and researchers in the field. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the differences between the methods and their effectiveness in accurately representing MRIO-tables. Findings – This study evaluates three methods (mentioned above) for estimating multiregional trade flows, highlighting their performance. Method 1 and 2, exhibited similarities in their approach to estimating trade flows, both surpassing the performance of method 3 across various evaluation metrics. According to the results, method 1 and 2 are better than method 3 in accurately estimating multiregional trade flows. Limitations – This work had some limitations, the research focused on one specific product and how they flow between and across the regions as well as the total quantity of this product, i.e., the margins.

Contributions toward the integrated pest management of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), on collards in Virginia

Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is a serious pest of crucifer vegetables (Brassica sp.) worldwide because of a lack of effective natural enemies in certain regions and because of insecticide resistance. In 2003, laboratory and field studies were initiated in Virginia to better understand P. xylostella, its primary natural enemies, and their susceptibilities to insecticides in order to develop an economically and environmentally sound integrated pest management program for collards in the state. Ecological life table studies of P. xylostella immature stages on collards located on the Eastern Shore and on Kentland Farm, near Blacksburg at the New River Valley, VA revealed that most (98 to 99%) of P. xylostella died from natural causes. Mortality factors varied between the two regions. Neonates, small larvae, and large larvae disappearing were major mortality factors. Rainfall, predation, and dispersal probably contributed the most to this mortality. Egg mortality played a bigger role at the New River Valley compared with the Eastern Shore. Three parasitoid species were found that contributed to the mortality of P. xylostella: Diadegma insulare (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae); Oomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae); and Microplitis plutellae (Muesebeck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Additional studies conducted in the laboratory using leaf-dip bioassays revealed that P. xylostella collected from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, showed significant tolerance levels to esfenvalerate, acetamiprid, methomyl, methoxyfenozide, indoxacarb, and acephate compared with a susceptible strain of P. xylostella. The highest tolerance ratio (1,876 fold) was to esfenvalerate, a commonly-used pyrethroid. All of the insecticides tested in this study were quite toxic to the adult stage of the parasitoids, D. insulare and O. sokolowskii. The insect growth regulator, methoxyfenozide was considerably less toxic than other insecticides such as esfenvalerate, methomyl, acephate, spinosad, indoxacarb, and emamectin benzoate at field-rate and 1% of field-rate concentrations. The aforementioned insecticides as well as some other insecticides were evaluated several times in the field for efficacy against P. xylostella as well as other pests of collards. The most efficacious insecticides over five field experiments included acephate, emamectin benzoate, esfenvalerate, methomyl, methoxyfenozide, novaluron, indoxacarb, and spinosad. These insecticides were followed in relative efficacy by Bt kurstaki, acetamiprid, and azadirachtin, which provided relatively inconsistent control of lepidopteran larvae over the experiments. Effective insecticide options in collards that are less toxic to natural enemies and that can fit well into integrated pest management programs include indoxacarb, spinosad, novaluron, emamectin benzoate, methoxyfenozide, and Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki. / Ph. [pt] O estudo teve como objetivo abordar o ensino das Funções Exponenciais e Logarítmicas quanto ao aspecto teórico para o fortalecimento dos conceitos. Para alcançar este objetivo, este trabalho foi feito baseado em pesquisas bibliográficas em livros, artigos, dissertações entre outras fontes. Antes de abordarmos o assunto de exponenciais explanamos sobre o conceito de funções e citamos a importância das tabelas. Abordamos o assunto de exponenciais citando algumas de suas aplicações e algumas demonstrações. Mostramos também o processo de construção da tabela de logaritmos decimais. Para fortalecer o conhecimento sobre o assunto faremos uso de calculadoras e planilhas eletrônicas em algumas atividades propostas para mostrar propriedades das funções exponenciais e logarítmicas e a importante constante matemática e, que aparece naturalmente em fenômenos da Natureza. Esperamos contribuir de forma positiva para o interesse e aprimoramento de professores no assunto explanado e, principalmente, para a motivação dos alunos em estudar e compreender melhor a importância dos logaritmos. / [en] This study aims to approach the teaching of exponential and logarithmic functions regarding the theoretical aspects to the enhancement of concepts. In order to achieve this goal, this study was based on bibliographic research, articles, and dissertations, among other sources. Before we approached the issue on exponentials, we went over the concept of functions and highlited the importance of tables. We also approached the issue of exponentials citing from some of its applications and demonstrations. We brought up, as well, the process of setting up the decimal logarithmic table. In order to enhance the knowledge on the subject, we will make use of calculators and tables so as to reinforce the knowledge over the subject in some activities proposed to demonstrate the properties of the exponential and logarithmic functions as well as the important mathematical constant e which occurs naturally in natural phenomena. We hope to contribute positively to the bringing out of interest to teachers and likewise enhancement to their knowledge on the subject studied and, specially, motivation to students generating a better understanding over the importance of logarithms.

Utilisation de splines monotones afin de condenser des tables de mortalité dans un contexte bayésien

Dans ce mémoire, nous cherchons à modéliser des tables à deux entrées monotones en lignes et/ou en colonnes, pour une éventuelle application sur les tables de mortalité. Nous adoptons une approche bayésienne non paramétrique et représentons la forme fonctionnelle des données par splines bidimensionnelles. L’objectif consiste à condenser une table de mortalité, c’est-à-dire de réduire l’espace d’entreposage de la table en minimisant la perte d’information. De même, nous désirons étudier le temps nécessaire pour reconstituer la table. L’approximation doit conserver les mêmes propriétés que la table de référence, en particulier la monotonie des données. Nous travaillons avec une base de fonctions splines monotones afin d’imposer plus facilement la monotonie au modèle. En effet, la structure flexible des splines et leurs dérivées faciles à manipuler favorisent l’imposition de contraintes sur le modèle désiré. Après un rappel sur la modélisation unidimensionnelle de fonctions monotones, nous généralisons l’approche au cas bidimensionnel. Nous décrivons l’intégration des contraintes de monotonie dans le modèle a priori sous l’approche hiérarchique bayésienne. Ensuite, nous indiquons comment obtenir un estimateur a posteriori à l’aide des méthodes de Monte Carlo par chaînes de Markov. Finalement, nous étudions le comportement de notre estimateur en modélisant une table de la loi normale ainsi qu’une table t de distribution de Student. L’estimation de nos données d’intérêt, soit la table de mortalité, s’ensuit afin d’évaluer l’amélioration de leur accessibilité. / This master’s thesis is about the estimation of bivariate tables which are monotone within the rows and/or the columns, with a special interest in the approximation of life tables. This problem is approached through a nonparametric Bayesian regression model, in particular linear combinations of regression splines. By condensing a life table, our goal is to reduce its storage space without losing the entries’ accuracy. We will also study the reconstruction time of the table with our estimators. The properties of the reference table, specifically its monotonicity, must be preserved in the estimation. We are working with a monotone spline basis since splines are flexible and their derivatives can easily be manipulated. Those properties enable the imposition of constraints of monotonicity on our model. A brief review on univariate approximations of monotone functions is then extended to bivariate estimations. This thesis addresses childlessness and its aspects in selected European countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Estonia, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. The aim of this work is to discover whether there are differences between capitalist and post-socialist countries when it comes to the development of childlessness and fertility. The tools are: the analysis of fertility, the average age of mothers at childbirth and analysis of childlessness using both transversal and longitudinal indicators. The indicators used in the analysis were of the first and second category. Another aim of this thesis is to find out whether there are differences between the attitudes, opinions and values when it comes to approach to the family, the division of gender roles and children between childless respondents and respondents with children. The differentiation between sex and age groups through the use of three matrices with questions from three surveys (European Values Study, Eurobarometer and ISSP) are also investigated. The factor analysis and the method of principal components are used to reduce the number of variables. Dealing with Network Partitions and Mergers in Structured Overlay Networks

<p>Structured overlay networks form a major classof peer-to-peer systems, which are touted for their abilitiesto scale, tolerate failures, and self-manage. Any long livedInternet-scale distributed system is destined to facenetwork partitions. Although the problem of network partitionsand mergers is highly related to fault-tolerance andself-management in large-scale systems, it has hardly beenstudied in the context of structured peer-to-peer systems.These systems have mainly been studied under churn (frequentjoins/failures), which as a side effect solves the problemof network partitions, as it is similar to massive nodefailures. Yet, the crucial aspect of network mergers has beenignored. In fact, it has been claimed that ring-based structuredoverlay networks, which constitute the majority of thestructured overlays, are intrinsically ill-suited for mergingrings. In this thesis, we present a number of research papers representing our work on handling network partitions and mergers in structured overlay networks. The contribution of this thesis is threefold. First, we provide a solution for merging ring-based structured overlays. Our solution is tuneable, by a {\em fanout} parameter, to achieve a trade-off between message and time complexity. Second, we provide a network size estimation algorithm for ring-based structured overlays. We believe that an estimate of the current network size can be used for tuning overlay parameters that change according to the network size, for instance the fanout parameter in our merger solution.Third, we extend our work from fixing routing anomalies to achieving data consistency. We argue that decreasing lookup inconsistencies on the routing level aids in achieving data consistency in applications built on top of overlays. We study the frequency of occurence of lookup inconsistencies and discuss solutions to decrease the affect of lookup inconsistencies.</p>
