Ninety-four samplers were deployed over a 180-km2 area for two weeks in October 2001. Within the area sampled were located suburbs, an urban center, major highways, port activities, fertilizer manufacturing, wastewater treatment, coal-combustion power plants, warehousing and dairy farming. The sampled locations were arranged in a triangular grid pattern spaced 1.5 km apart. The pattern was designed to locate circular hot spots with a minimum radius of 0.75 km. The minimum, maximum, mean, and median ammonia concentrations were 0.06, 15, 2.0, and 1.5 mg/m3, respectively, and the estimated precision was 16%. Educators' Oral Histories of Tampa Bay Area Writing Project Involvement

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain participants’ perceptions of Tampa Bay Area Writing Project (TBAWP) influence on professional learning over time. This study explored Writing Project impact on professional learning by accessing the oral histories of three educators who were involved in TBAWP between 1998 and 2004. The research question was: • In what ways, if any, has long-term involvement in the Tampa Bay Area Writing Project impacted the teaching practice, career growth, and professional learning of participating educators? This qualitative study employed constructivism as the theoretical framework. Analysis of study data resulted in specific findings. Educators’ stories revealed Writing Project participation significantly impacted their teaching practice, career growth, and professional learning. The lasting impact of Writing Project involvement was seen in the ways in which educators infused the concept of community into their teaching practice, accepted leadership positions within the profession, and ultimately went on to conduct professional learning experiences for educators. Data analysis generated a conceptual model that examines the lasting impact of educator professional learning. Implications of this finding are significant for longitudinal inquiry of educator professional learning and for impact studies of long-term Writing Project involvement. In addition to providing exemplars of educator stories of practice over time, the study contributed to development of a fuller understanding of effective professional development, educator professional learning, and the lasting impact of Writing Project involvement.

Land-use & Water Quality in the Headwaters of the Alafia River Watershed

The objective of this study is to investigate land-use changes and water quality trends within the headwaters of the Alafia River watershed. Water quality data were obtained from the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC). Eleven water quality parameters selected for analysis included: temperature (˚C), dissolved oxygen (DO), percent saturation of DO, conductivity, pH, total phosphorous (TP), total nitrogen (TN), ammonium, chlorophyll-a (uncorrected), fecal coliforms, and enterococci. ArcMap® & SWFWMD data were used to map EPCHC sampling stations, calculate contributing watershed size, and determine land-use changes over the course of the sampling period; 17 stations were chosen for this study. The annual average for each of the water quality parameters was calculated along with a Mann-Kendall Trend Analysis in order to determine if any of the observed trends were statistically significant. A non-parametric Kendall’s tau-b correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression tests were conducted in SPSS to determine if any statistically significant relationships between water quality data, land-use and basin size exist. The land-use results showed every basin consisted of some percentage of Low Density Residential, Cropland & Pastureland, Reservoirs, and Streams & Lake Swamps. In addition, no basin comprised of more than 20% wetlands and often it appears urbanization was at the sacrifice of agricultural lands, as opposed to wetlands. The trends in water quality showed eight of the 17 basins had at least one statistically significant trend. Analysis of the data used for this study has shown instances where water quality measurements were in violation of state standards. Changes in water quality can be statistically related to changes in land-use and basin size as both the correlation and the regression showed consistent relationships between several LULC types and water quality parameters: increases in Commercial & Services causes increased nutrients (TP and TN); Cropland & Pastureland causes decreased DO and DO% Saturation; increases in Tree Crops causes a decrease in pH; increasing Other Open Lands Rural causes a decrease in temperature; and increases in Shrub & Brushland cause decreases in conductivity and pH. As these relationships are based on the results from both analyses, it would seem that these relationships are the most reliable, and are key results of the study. These key relationships might be areas that future water resource managers may want to focus on in order to more efficiently improve or regulate water quality within headwater streams.

Identification of spatiotemporal nutrient patterns and associated ecohydrological trends in the tampa bay coastal region

Improvements for environmental monitoring and assessment were achieved to advance our understanding of sea-land interactions and nutrient cycling in a coastal bay.; The comprehensive assessment techniques for monitoring of water quality of a coastal bay can be diversified via an extensive investigation of the spatiotemporal nutrient patterns and the associated eco-hydrological trends in a coastal urban region. With this work, it is intended to thoroughly investigate the spatiotemporal nutrient patterns and associated eco-hydrological trends via a two part inquiry of the watershed and its adjacent coastal bay. The findings show that the onset of drought lags the crest of the evapotranspiration and precipitation curve during each year of drought. During the transition year, ET and precipitation appears to start to shift back into the analogous temporal pattern as the 2005 wet year. NDVI shows a flat receding tail for the September crest in 2005 due to the hurricane impact signifying that the hurricane event in October dampening the severity of the winter dry season in which alludes to relative system memory. The k-means model with 8 clusters is the optimal choice, in which cluster 2 at Lower Tampa Bay had the minimum values of total nitrogen (TN) concentrations, chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentrations, and ocean color values in every season as well as the minimum concentration of total phosphorus (TP) in three consecutive seasons in 2008. Cluster 5, located in Middle Tampa Bay, displayed elevated TN concentrations, ocean color values, and Chl-a concentrations, suggesting that high colored dissolved organic matter values are linked with some nutrient sources. The data presented by the gravity modeling analysis indicate that the Alafia River Basin is the major contributor of nutrients in terms of both TP and TN values in all seasons. Such ecohydrological evaluation can be applied for supporting the LULC management of climatic vulnerable regions as well as further enrich the comprehensive assessment techniques for estimating and examining the multi-temporal impacts and dynamic influence of urban land use and land cover.

Este trabalho tem como principal objetivo o desenvolvimento de um método numérico para simulação das grandes escalas de escoamentos turbulentos tridimensionais utilizando uma modelagem de turbulência baseada em filtragem temporal (denominada TLES - Temporal Large Eddy Simulation). O método desenvolvido combina discretizações temporais com ordem de mínima precisão 2 (Adams-Bashforth, QUICK, Runge-Kutta), um método de projeção de ordem 2, com discretizações espaciais também de ordem 2 obtidas pelo método de volumes finitos. Esta metodologia foi empregada na simulação de problemas teste turbulentos como o canal e a cavidade impulsionada, sendo este último resultado simulado pela primeira vez com modelagem TLES. Os resultados mostram uma excelente concordância quando comparado com resultados de simulações diretas (DNS) e dados experimentais, superando resultados clássicos obtidos com formulação LES com filtragem espacial. / The main objective of this work is to develop a numerical method for large eddy simulation of tridimensional turbulent flows using a model based on temporal filtering (TLES - Temporal Large Eddy Simulation). The developed method combines at least 2nd order temporal discretizations (Adams-Bashforth, QUICK, Runge-Kutta), a 2nd order projection method, and 2nd order spatial discretizations obtained by the finite volume method. This methodology was employed to the simulation of turbulent benchmark problems such as channel and lid-driven cavity flows. The latter is simulated for the first time using a TLES turbulence modelling. Results show excellent agreement when compared to Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and experimental data, with better results than classical results produced by standard LES formulation with spatial filtering.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Modern engineering increasingly requires the comprehension of phenomena related to combustion, aeroacustics, turbulence transition, among others. For these purposes the Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) requires the used high order methods. One of these methods is the Fourier pseudo-spectral method, that provides an excellent numerical accuracy, and with the use of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm (FFT), it presents a low computational cost in comparison to anothers high-order methods. Another important issue is the projection method of the pression term, which does not require the pressure computation from the Navier-Stokes equations. The procedure to calculate the pression field is usually the most onerous in classical methodologies. Nevertheless, the pseudo-spectral method can be only applied to periodic boundary flows, thus limiting its use. Aiming to solve this restriction, a new methodology is proposed at the present work, which has the objective of simulating nonperiodic flows using the Fourier pseudo-spectral method. For this purpose the immersed boundary method, that represents the boundary conditions through a force field imposed at Navier-Stokes equations is used. As a test to this new methodology, a classic problem of Computational Fluid Dynamics, The Lid Driven Cavity was simulated. The obtained results are promising and demonstrate the possibility to simulating non-periodic flows making use of the Fourier pseudo-spectral method. / Para compreender fenômenos relacionados à combustão, aeroacústica, transição a turbulência entre outros, a Dinâmica de Fluídos Computacional (CFD) utiliza os métodos de alta ordem. Um dos mais conhecidos é o método pseudo-espectral de Fourier, o qual alia: alta ordem de precisão na resolução das equações, com um baixo custo computacional. Este está ligado à utilização da FFT e do método da projeção do termo da pressão, o qual desvincula os cálculos da pressão da resolução das equações de Navier-Stokes. O procedimento de calcular o campo de pressão, normalmente é o mais oneroso nas metodologias convencionais. Apesar destas vantagens, o método pseudo-espectral de Fourier só pode ser utilizado para resolver problemas com condições de contorno periódicas, limitando o seu uso no campo da dinâmica de fluídos. Visando resolver essa restrição uma nova metodologia é proposta no presente trabalho, que tem como objetivo simular escoamentos não-periódicos utilizando o método pseudo-espectral de Fourier. Para isso, é utilizada a metodologia da Fronteira Imersa, a qual representa as condições de contorno de um escoamento através de um campo de força imposto nas equações de Navier-Stokes. Como teste, para essa nova metodologia, foi simulada uma cavidade com tampa deslizante (Lid Driven Cavity), problema clássico da mecânica de fluídos, que objetiva validar novas metodologias e códigos computacionais. Rörelserädsla och self-efficacy för fysisk träning innan och efter deltagande i artrosskola : En icke-experimentell longitudinell enkätstudie

Sammanfattning Bakgrund: Vanligt vid artros är låg aktivitetsnivå. I behandlingsprogrammet artrosskola är fysisk träning en intervention. Predicerande faktorer för om beteendet fysisk träning kommer utföras är self-efficacy samt rörelserädsla. Syfte: Syftet var att studera variablerna rörelserädsla och self-efficacy för fysisk träning hos personer med höft- och eller knäartros innan och efter deltagande i artrosskola samt korrelationen avseende skillnaden mellan för- och eftermätning för variablerna. Metod: En icke-experimentell longitudinell enkätstudie med två mätpunkter för ett urval om 22 personer deltog i studien. Mätinstrumenten var Tampaskalan för kinesiofobi- svensk version (TSK-SV) och self-efficacy för fysisk träning skalan (S-ESES). Dataanalysen utfördes med Wilcoxons tecken rangtest samt Spearmans rangkorrelationstest. Resultat: Signifikant skillnad mellan skattad TSK-SV förelåg före respektive efter deltagande i artrosskola (p=0,049). Effektstorleken värderades som medelstor. Ingen signifikant skillnad förelåg mellan skattad S-ESES innan och efter deltagande i artrosskola (p=0,116). Effektstorleken värderades som liten. Lågt signifikant samband förelåg mellan skillnader mellan för- och eftermätning gällande self-efficacy för fysisk träning och rörelserädsla. Slutsats: Resultatet visade på en minskad rörelserädsla och en korrelation mellan förändringarna gällande variablerna. Vidare studier med artrosskola som en kontrollerad oberoende variabel krävs för att möjliggöra kausala slutsatser gällande artrosskolans inverkan på variablerna. / Abstract  Background: Common in osteoarthritis are low activity level. Self-management is a rehabilitation program that includes physical exercise. Self-efficacy and fear of movement can determine if physical activity will be performed.  Aim: The aim of the study was to examine the variables fear of movement and self-efficacy for physical exercise for people with hip-and or knee osteoarthritis before and after participation in self-management program, and to investigate the correlation between the pre-post differences in the variables. Methods: Non-experimental longitudinal questionnaire survey with two measurement points. 22 participants participated. Measurements used were Tampa scale for the kinesiophobia-Swedish version (TSK-SV) and Swedish version of the Exercise Self-efficacy scale (S-ESES). Wilcoxon's tecken-rank test and Spearman's rank correlation test were used to analyze data. Results: A significant difference between estimated TSK-SV before and after the intervention (p=0,049), medium effect size. No significant difference between estimated S-ESES before and after the intervention (p=0,116), small effect size. Difference between the measuring points showed low correlation between fear of movement and self-efficacy for exercise. Conclusion: Fear of movement decreased and there was a correlation between the difference of the variables. Future studies require a controlled independent variable to enable causal conclusion between the interventions impact on the variables.

I only want to be human : Disembarkation platforms for refugees - not concentration camps

In this study I have studied the European Unions suggestion about disembarkation of refugees from a human rights perspective - especially the perspective of human value and human dignity. Human dignity is central. It is expressed in the preamble to the UN Human Rights, as well as in its first paragraph; “Everyone has the right to dignity, and it shall not be violated.” I have studied refugees that have previously spent time in large refugee camps outside Europe, in Jordan and in Libya. In my study I use Libya as an example on what refugees can face in camps in third-world countries. The subject caught my attention since the Norwegian ship MS Tampa picked up refugees on international water outside Australia. The Norwegian captain tried to leave them on Australian land but was refused to do so. Australia sent a military boat to pick them up and left them at an island outside Australia. Moreover European politicians have discussed the idea of off-shore, placements of refugees at disembarkation camps as a way of solving the problem of huge number of refugees that are looking for asylum in Europe as well as the many deaths at the Mediterranean Sea. There has also been a discussion on quota refugees chosen by the UNHCR. This made me wonder how the situation would be for the remaining refugees that will stay in these large camps, maybe for years, as well as how their human rights are respected in camps outside Europe where Europe have no control? How does this correspond to the principle of human value? In my qualitative study I started by making a literature study. Thereafter continued with an interview study where I interviewed refugees that have stayed at camps outside Europe. The purpose of the interview and the study was to take part of their narratives and to make their voices heard. I found that the narrative of refugees is not heard, this makes them feel less valued as human, or not even a human. Their dignity is violated, and their human rights are not respected. Their interests have been forced to give way to the interest of the state.
