A critical analysis of governance and management in Zimbabwe's colleges of technical and vocational education: issues for revitalisation

Mbizvo, Washington T January 2003 (has links)
This research was carried out in order to gain a better understanding of the practice of governance in a technical or vocationally oriented college and the critical role played by the principal as a college manager within the governance system in which industrialists and head office are also key players. Conceptual literature relating to issues of governance and management within the education scenario is examined. The wider issues of governance are critically analysed in the context of power and control mechanisms initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education as the responsible authority for the colleges. The influence of the industrial sector as the consumers of skilled labour force is analysed through college advisory councils set up in terms of the relevant pieces of legislation. The research is qualitative and takes the form of three case studies of technical and vocational colleges in Zimbabwe. Data were collected through multiple methods from varied sources with a view to ensuring triangulation. The multiple-case design enabled me to dig beneath the surface of what apparently happens in these organisations and unearth issues and concerns at the wider governance and management levels. Views and experiences of participants are captured and explained through in-depth interviews, observations and documentary sources. Results are discussed in relation to the relevant literature allowing grounded theory to emerge. The research highlights the roles of key players in governance and the issues of relationships among these actors. What emerges is a desperate situation of ineffectiveness, problematic processes in governance and poor responsiveness of these colleges to the labour market demands. The potential for generalisability and transferability is discussed in the report and possible corrective intervention strategies are recommended. The thesis demonstrates that managers of these colleges and indeed senior officers in head office who are at the centre of governance and will need transformational leadership development in order for them to come to terms with such things as people’s feelings, abandoning ‘outdated’ policies, managing change, and handling communication effectively. Various strategies for revitalisation of governance and management in technical and vocational colleges are suggested.

An investigation into the role of attitudes towards mathematics as a motivation for choosing vocational-technical secondary education

Venter, Petrus Albertus January 1986 (has links)
From Introduction: As headmaster of a technical high school it is my responsibility to admit standard six pupils to this school. Often the refrain from parents is heard: "My son is weak in mathematics but good with his hands." These parents desperately seek a secondary education for their non-academic children. To what extent has the vicious circle of low achievement - negative attitude - lower achievement - despair already been established in these pupils as far as mathematics is concerned? How does this low self-concept in mathematics ability serve as a factor in deciding upon which career to follow, which type of high school to attend? Parents and the public at large seem to be ill-informed about the subjects offered at technical high schools. The mathematical character of these schools is especially undervalued. People often seem to think that the mathematics at a technical high school is easier than at other high schools. Furthermore, people do not realize that mathematics forms the cornerstone of any technical field of study. Failure in mathematics will inevitably lead to low marks or failure in technical subjects. It seems that many pupils who have already developed a defeatist attitude towards mathematics, seek entry into this type of high school. If so, then why? This study aims to elucidate the mathematical cognitive demands made by mathematically related subjects in a technical high school. At the same time possible relationships will be investigated between choice of type of high school (technical vs non-technical) and : i) attitudes to mathematics; ii) achievement in mathematics; iii) general academic achievement; iv) attitude to school. Pupils at standard five level have already established their attitudes towards subjects. For this study standard five boys from East London English and Afrikaans-speaking primary schools were involved. The reason why girls were not considered was to eliminate the variables of sex-related behaviours. Also, girls do not report in any large numbers for technical education as yet. The results of this study should be of use to those advising standard five pupils on their choice of type of high school. If satisfactory relationships are found between affective-cognitive variables and choice of high school, future researchers may use this towards the construction of a required profile for prospective pupils of technical high schools. There are of course, many other factors in the issue. Variables like social status, parents' own experiences, vested interests of academic high schools and many more are not considered in this study. It is conceded that any in-depth study into attitudes towards mathematics or into choice of type of high school is a many-faceted problem, the scope of which lies beyond this thesis. Suffice to admit that attitudes are complex dispositions resulting from the interactions between a number of affective, cognitive and psychomotor variables.

Querubin, Docimar January 2008 (has links)
This Master's dissertation is intended to analyze the trajectory of the Integrar Program for Metalworkers from CUT and its contributions to the debate about professional education in Brazil. For that purpose, I tried to systematize some aspects of the methodological and pedagogical innovations that the Integrar Program has built for the last 13 years of existence. The Integrar Program was created in 1995 from two experiments developed by metalworkers, training in productive restructuring and trade union action. From these two courses and from a survey conducted in Largo 13 de Maio in Sao Paulo, the National Confederation of Metalworkers - CNM / CUT faced the challenge of thinking and organizing a process of education for unemployed workers, which would break with the logic of traditionally performed programs, either by corporate entities or by public entities. In most of the cases, those programs were far from the desired education for workers. he study departs from a review of the productive restructuring experienced in Brazil, mainly in the 90’s, and it is aimed at indicating some review elements from trade union action towards new circumstances and moves designed and organized in the metallurgical field by CUT in order to face a period marked mainly by a growth in the unemployment rate, affecting workers. This study also sought to examine the work of authors from the Sociology of Work and Education for Workers and documents that had been systematized by the Integrar Program over those 13 years. The settings for the Public System of Employment, organized in Brazil and the creation of the Fundo de Amparo ao Trabalhador (the Workers’ protection Fund), served as the background for the metalworkers at CUT to dare develop a program that was able to build, after the Military Regime (after the year of 64) a successful experience on professional education. From the point of view of work itself, the results of this experience have generated, within the union movement and society, the perspective that it is possible to build innovative projects.

INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF ORIENTATION AND DETECTED CHARACTERISTICS OF FIRST-TIME ONLINE STUDENTS ON THEIR SUCCESS RATE IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE SETTING

Akpom, Reginald C. 01 December 2013 (has links)
It is evident that the failure rate is higher among online students than in-class students at Hopkinsville Community College. An analysis of the academic records of students who enrolled in online courses for the first time at Hopkinsville indicated a 13% higher withdrawal and failure rate than those who took in-class courses over the same period between 2000 and 2010. Colleges are taking potentially all of the necessary steps to reduce the student failure rates among online students because high withdrawal and failure rates often reflect badly on the quality of education by the providing institutions (C. Segura, personal communication, November 2009). The purpose of this study is to determine if there is any statistically significant difference in the success rates between first-time online students who participated in the orientation for first-time online students, and first-time online students who did not participate in the orientation at Hopkinsville Community College. The study also determined if any relationships exist between success in an online course and student gender, student course load, student grade point average (GPA), student age, student readiness for online learning score, and student level of technology experience score. Studying the relationships between orientation of first-time online students and withdrawal and failure rates among first-time online students may lead to finding ways of reducing the high failure and withdrawal rates of online students at the community college.

In Brazil and worldwidely, the consumption of psychoactive drugs has been a serious problem of public health, demanding effective public policies to minimize it, mainly among adolescents and young. This work analyzes tobacco and alcohol consumption of the students from the Elias Nechar Technical School, in the municipal district of Catanduva SP, and the educational activities developed by the school to face this issue. From a theoretical referential, field research using questionnaires and interviews, it has pointed out that most of the students smoke and drink; some does it earlier, due to the influence of the family, friends, media and a desire for self-affirmation. Also the results have pointed out the practice of the tobacco consumption of some members of the school community. The school has tried to guide and to get the students aware, providing information on the tobacco and the alcohol harms and the legislation which bans the consumption in the school setting, promotes lectures and debates on the theme, trying to involve all in their activities This study pointed out the need of more effective and continuous actions, not only in the Education in Health I curricular syllabus, but to include a program that considers all of the aspects - biological, physiologic, social, psychological and others, built collectively by managers, teachers, employees, students and families, reviewed and frequently evaluated, turning all these actors co-responsable and committed with their own health and the community in which they will be caring as further professionals. / TEDE

Blanco, Diego Monte January 2015 (has links)
A presente tese aborda o tema juventude, ensino profissionalizante e trabalho no Brasil Contemporâneo. / This thesis deals with youth issues, vocacional education and work in Contemporary Brazil. Its object of study is the relationship of socialization processes of young students of technical education at the Rede Federal de Educação Profissional e Tecnológica to the dispositional plots that characterize their projections on their trajectory of study and professional training. This study, supported by a theoretical and methodological perspective of dispositional sociology by Bernard Lahire, aims to understand how dispositional variations and tensions of these actors are generators and propellants of their perspectives, fears and uncertainties in relation to their trajectory of study, qualification and work to be incurred. The argument is that such conflictualities result of variation of social dispositions composed simultaneously by (i) the socialization models and logics of socio-economic integration of young people from popular strata occurred in the context of the fordist modernization experienced by past generations and (ii) the experimentation of forms of integration, mobility and lifestyle emerging in contemporaneity, where is developed a new youth condition with opportunities not yet fully established, especially for these young people from the popular strata in the context of global and flexible capitalism. From the analysis of data obtained in long interviews with students, and by statistical data input obtained from secondary sources, the results of this research evidence a sociological interpretation of future prospects and conflictualities experienced by these actors, looking to problematize and to complement other approaches on the fears and uncertainties of youth in education and work. The conflictualities of respondents actors, expressed in their projections of a trajectory of study and professionalization, are resulting mainly from the transition and the overlapping of historical configurations of the relationship between professional education, work and life cycle of youth present in their universes of socialization. This plot would compose dispositional variations tensioned between "choice" and "(in)definitions" that could, in the perception of these young people, limit or expand their professional trajectory and lifestyles.
