Activist Technical Communication at Girls' Technology Camps: Building Girls' Confidence in Digital LiteraciesCarolyn K Grant (7042790) 02 August 2019 (has links)
Activist Technical
Communication at Girls’ Technology Camps: Building Girls’ Confidence in Digital
Literacies
presents a mixed-method empirical study investigating the capacity of a girls’
summer technology camp, Girls Go Digital, to foster girls’ confidence and
interest in STEM subjects. I build on the work of a growing number of
university technical communication and composition programs hosting local
digital camps for middle school-aged girls, responding to the gap in STEM
confidence that grows between boys and girls after middle school. My
dissertation works in partnership with a large, national, for-profit version of
these camps, and I utilize a community engagement approach. Though some may see
the aims of a for-profit tech camp as incompatible with engagement ethics, I
argue that we ought not to ignore the potential for community impact offered by
their resources and reach. With a camp design targeted to reach girls who may
feel discouraged by a mixed gender setting, a week of camp at Girls Go Digital
leads to statistically significant positive impacts on girls’ confidence in
their technology skills, as well as attitudes relating to technology. These
findings contribute not only to strategies for technofeminist interventions,
but also to the growing body of technical communication scholarship with social
justice aims. In order to build girls’ confidence at camp, technical
instruction is intertwined with instructors’ roles as emotionally supportive
mentors for their campers. Complicating technical communication’s
prioritization of clarity and efficiency, my study suggests that for girls
learning STEM subjects, and for many other disenfranchised audiences, truly
effective technical communication must also be trust-building advocacy work.

The Role of Social Media in Providing New Opportunities in Work and Life: A Qualitative Study of Professional Saudi Arabian WomenSaleh, Ramzia Hisham 17 April 2020 (has links)
This study builds on a small but growing body of research concerning socio-economic, cultural, political, and personal challenges influencing Saudi women’s professional development. Although Saudi women have more advantages and opportunities in 2020 compared to previous historical periods, women still face challenges related to employment and professional status. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the insider experience connected to challenges Saudi women face in work and life that hinder their professional development. Specifically, this research explored the role of social media in providing new opportunities to help Saudi women overcome challenges they face in work and life. Guided by a qualitative approach, this interpretive study is conducted through interviews, supporting documents analysis, and personal experiences. This study draws on Technofeminism, Intersectional Feminism, and Social Role Theory in order to provide a broad theoretical lens to help interpret findings. Using thematic analysis, six main themes were uncovered: (1) socio-cultural challenges, (2) personal challenges, (3) ethical challenges, (4) institutional challenges, (5) civic and professional engagement, and (6) socialization and privacy issues. General findings indicated that despite efforts from the Saudi Arabian government to enhance women’s rights in society, women continue to face socio-cultural, personal, and ethical challenges in work and life. The advanced analysis revealed that social media does have a positive role in providing Saudi women with new opportunities to overcome challenges they face but that cultural norms and traditional practices continue to create challenges that hinder Saudi women’s professional development.

Empowerment or exploitation: A qualitative analysis of online feminist communities’ discussions of deepfake pornographyBrieger, Alexandra Rose January 2024 (has links)
This thesis serves to provide insight into the textually constructed identities that online feminist groups create when discussing deepfake pornography, as well as positions that feminist users embody in regards to their ability to change dominant uses of deepfake pornography. Deepfakes, powered by artificial intelligence and deep learning, involve taking individuals’ faces and placing them on images and videos for various purposes and includes but is not limited to pornography. Much is known regarding the potential ramifications of deepfake technology in general, however, little is known concerning social groups and their perceptions of deepfake pornography. Additionally, there is no data in connection with feminist perspectives of deepfakes in online communities. In order to interpret the empirical data, this thesis employs various theoretical concepts in connection with technofeminism (Wajcman, 2004) in order to understand participants’ perceptions and attitudes towards deepfakes. It also utilizes moral foundations theory (Graham et al., 2013) to unpack moral concerns that communities may have regarding deepfake pornography. Based on a discourse analysis of three Reddit feminist communities: r/PornIsMisogyny, r/fourthwavewomen, and r/TwoXChromosomes, this thesis finds that through their discussions, feminist communities construct a multitude of identities in relation to deepfake pornography, all of which are directly tied to their sense of moral principles. These identities contrast victims and perpetrators, as well as hold identities of governments and parents accountable for the spread of deepfake pornography. Additionally, many feminist users express vigilante justice and criminalization as potential catalysts for change, which is reflected in social constructionism, while other users express feelings of hopelessness and exhibit alternative positions more consistent with technological determinism. Thus, this emphasizes that collaborative efforts from governments, those in power, as well as private citizens are needed to address challenges that deepfake pornography poses to society as a whole.
