Obésité adolescente et expérience corporelle en EPS : entre agir et subir les contraintes normatives / Teenage obesity and physical experience in physical education : between acting and being subject to normative constraints

Lefevre, Lisa 15 February 2019 (has links)
We focus our research on the study of body experience for obese teenagers, in order to understand the engagement process when facing compulsory Physical Education situations. Scientific studies show a rather low level of physical activity among overweight adolescents. Analyzed in the light of existential anthropology (meaning « of people existing »), the strategies reviewed only describe the major reality mode, which meets school expectations. Fitting in the science of pragmatic theories (Quéré, 1997), experience sociology (Dubet, 1994) and existential anthropology (Piette, 2015), this thesis provides a new perspective by getting to grips with the body, space, time and relationship experience of four students, through the minor reality mode. The ethnographic study enabled the reconstruction of their body experience based on audiovisual data, non-participating observations and interviews with the students and their family and friends. Contrary to previous studies findings, our results highlight the richness of teenager body experience . The minor mode reveals remarkable body, space, time and relationship landmarks, which the student can use to stay engaged in situations, whilst breaking out of his/her unbearable constraints. The decommitment modes and the process of « reposité » lead to a better or different understanding of normative constraints conveyed in Physical Education. Overweight teenagers tend to « bodily translate » these norms by turning them into a choreographic score, based on the delicate balance between « doing » and « enduring ». Behind the incorporation of standards emerges the creative power of individuals in their existence.

From Lip Smackers to Wrinkle Cream: Priming the Next Generation of Consuming Women

Elliott, Rebecca 22 September 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a model of ideal femininity communicated through advertising in girls’ and women’s magazines. To assess the representations of women in magazine advertisements, a content analysis of advertisements appearing in three top-selling, demographically-defined women’s magazines (Girls’ Life, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan) was conducted. Using feminist theory and hegemony theory as critical lenses, advertisements were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Each advertisement was assessed using five criteria: physical characteristics, social context, personality and attitude, and subtext. Using this data to establish the dominant representations of women, it was determined that there is a model of ideal femininity which is developed through establishing common ideals shared by all three magazines and by gradually introducing new ideals which correspond to shifts in real-world interests and experiences of women. It was concluded that a model of ideal femininity is developed through advertising in girls’ and women’s magazines, this model is used as a guide to direct girls and women towards specific ideal preferences, attitudes and behaviours, and this model continues to emphasise traditional cultural values and gender ideals which are not necessarily reflective of the range of roles women assume in today’s society.

Social Constructions of Teen Pregnancy: Implications for Policy and Prevention Efforts

Jimenez, Stephanie 20 April 2012 (has links)
Over the past few decades, teen pregnancy has been framed as one of society’s most pressing ills. It has been understood as a “crisis” by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and a number of other cultural, religious, and governmental institutions. In this thesis, I analyze three constructions of teen pregnancy: 1) the construction of teen mothers as social “burdens” 2) the construction of teens as “unfit” to be parents 3) the construction of teen mothers as collectively “rational” actors reacting to contexts of structural inequality. While the first and second constructions draw upon the conception of teen pregnancy as a costly, national epidemic often reproduced by the irresponsible and “deviant” behavior of teens, the last construction rejects this discourse, and posits adolescents as “rational” actors that make “rational” decisions given a context of structurally-produced inequality. In that early childbearing may serve as a “collective adaptive” strategy in contexts of poverty, this construction of teen pregnancy has attempted to deconstruct the notion that teens become pregnant due to their “irrationality,” or their inability or unwillingness to recognize the harsh repercussions of early childbearing.4 In that this third construction favors “empowerment” policies that provide women with the “knowledge and means to exercise reproductive freedom,” it does not narrowly promote prevention policy as a single approach to teen pregnancy, and escapes the promotion of punitive approaches that seek to scare and discipline teens into abstaining from non-marital sex. 4 Arline T. Geronimus, “Teenage Childbearing and Social Disadvantage: Unprotected Discourse,” Family Relations (April 1992): 245.

Teens' Perceptions About Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Medications and Adaptation to Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Knipp, Diana Kathleen January 2005 (has links)
This qualitative study describes teens' perceptions about AD/HD and medications. Roy's Adaptation Model's four modes of adaptation were the framework for this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 high school teens aged 14-17 with parent reported AD/HD. Findings of inductive analysis for modes: Physiologic (Medication), Medications are a hassle but they work; Role function, I do better in school when I take the meds; Interdependence, With meds things are better with my family and friends don't know I am any different; and Self-concept/group identity, I'm just an everyday teenager, pretty much. The composite main theme was: Meds help me. School nurses can use this knowledge to guide interventions for families and teens with AD/HD, healthcare providers, school teachers and staff, and communities in a multidisciplinary effort toward an adaptive educational experience compatible for teens.

What doesit mean to have fun in their sport? : Personalexperiences of the young soccer playing teenage girls feel about their sport.

Åhsberg, Annika January 2012 (has links)

The Influence of Culture: A Comparison of White American and Hispanic American Teens Information Sources and Store Attribute Preferences

Murphy, Kelli H 01 January 2012 (has links)
The culture of America is changing now more than ever. With the Hispanic American population growing, it is important for retailers to understand how to market to these changing demographics. This study compares white Americans to Hispanic Americans in regard to store selection influences. Information sources and store attributes are analyzed as factors that influence store selection. It was found that acculturation of Hispanic American teens has created many commonalities between the two cultures. Future research could become be more in depth as to why these things occur or their effect on actual purchases.
