Desenvolvimento e validação de um questionário semi-quantitativo de freqüência alimentar para adolescentes / Development and validation of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire for adolescents

Villar, Betzabeth Slater 09 August 2001 (has links)
Purpose. The main purpose of this study was to develop a Food-Frequency Questionnaire - FFQ to calculate the consumption of energy, carbohydrate, protein, total lipid, unsaturated lipid, flber, cholesterol, retinol, vitamin C, calcium and iron by adolescents attending a public school located in the western region of the city of São Paulo. The relative validity of the FFQ was tested in a comparison between values estimated by the reference method (average, three days of R24h) and those calculated by the FFQ. Methodology. After identifying the major food sources of the nutrients analyzed, the FFQ was tested in a pilot test. The final version was comprised by seventy-six food items, grouped according to each of their proflles. The validity study was performed over a six-month period (]une through November, 1999) on seventy-nine volunteer students of both sexes, which responded four R24h with a 45-day interval and one FFQ at the end of the study. Data was computed by the Virtual Nutri and analyzed by using Pearson\'s correlation coefflcient, energy - adjustment and corrected for within-subject variance. Results. High variability was observed in adolescent diet consumption, showing extremely high variance ratios for cholesterol, retinol and vitamin C. Pearson\'s correlation coefficients, after adjustment and correction for variance, range between - O.1O to O.72 for females and from O.16 to O.91 for males. The average correlation coefficient for the entire group was 0.52. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the FFQ has shown an acceptable performance to classify individuais according to their habitual consumption for the majority of nutrients, with the exception of retinol and iron.

Prevalence and Sociodemographic Correlates of Indoor Tanning among Female Teens 12-18 Years in the United States

Scott, Colleen, Quinn, Megan, Alamian, Arsham, Hillhouse, Joel, Turrisi, Rob, Baker, Katie 05 April 2012 (has links)
Skin cancer incidence rates, including those for melanoma, continue to rise each year. These rates are increasing fastest among younger generations, making it important to understand the behavioral risks for the disease in this population. Adolescent females are especially at risk because of the ever-increasing popularity of indoor tanning (IT) and purposeful exposure to UV radiation. The study’s objective was to examine the prevalence of IT and the associated sociodemographic correlates in female teens (12-18 years of age) residing in the United States. Adolescent females (N=777) were recruited through Knowledge Networks’ online proprietary Knowledge Panel using dual frame recruiting with address-based and random-digit dialing to provide a national sample. Participants’ age, race, and tanning behavior, marital status of the parents and metropolitan residence status were self-reported in an online questionnaire. Frequencies and percentages were calculated. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent sociodemographic correlates of female teens ever having used a tanning bed or booth. Data analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics version 19. Eighteen percent of American female teens had ever engaged in IT. The sample was predominantly white (79.9%), lived in a metropolitan area (84.7%), and had parents who were married (75.6%). Metropolitan status was the strongest correlate of IT behavior, with non-metropolitan residents 2 times more likely to have ever indoor tanned compared to females living in metropolitan areas (Odds ratio (OR): 2.09, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.27-3.44). Additionally, a one-year increase in age was associated with 55% increase in the prevalence of ever IT (OR 1.5, CI 1.37- 1.75). Also, females with unmarried parents were 89% more likely to have ever tanned compared with females whose parents were married (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.23-3.09). White females were 0.16 times more likely to have ever indoor tanned compared to other races (OR: 0.16, 95% CI: 0.08-0.36). All independent variables were statistically significant at the p

Evaluating the Effects of <em>Strong Teens</em> on High School Student Levels of Internalizing Symptoms and Resilience

Millet, Austin J. 01 March 2016 (has links)
Many adults suffering from mental health problems often report that the onset of these concerns began in adolescence, highlighting the importance of identifying and treating mental health concerns from an early age. In high schools, some students are identified as having externalizing or internalizing disorders. The majority of these students, especially those with internalizing symptoms, go untreated. One potential reason may be that limited school resources are used to correct behavior problems, leaving those with internalizing disorders to silently suffer, which often exacerbates the issues. Recent research suggests many individuals have high levels of resilience which can be taught, and which positively contributes to mental health. Social emotional learning (SEL) is one approach to teaching resilience. In this study we implemented an SEL program called Strong Teens at the high school level. The high school identified students with internalizing symptoms and provided them with this curriculum, intended to reduce those symptoms. We used a time series design to evaluate changes in internalizing symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, and withdrawal) and resilience. Results indicated that with the implementation of the Strong Teens curriculum, student levels of internalizing symptoms decreased from pretest to posttest, according to self-report. Teacher reports did not indicate any significant change in internalizing symptoms or resilience. This study supports the findings o fthe Strong Teens curriculum as a generalizable program which significantly reduces internalizing symptoms.

With increasing teenage pregnancy rates among Blacks in the United States and the negative impact on families, it is important that practitioners and communities acknowledge the changes in society. According to the research, the influence of the media, entertainment industry and technology weigh heavily on the behavior and interactions of teens. Building on Erikson’s Theory of Identity Development, sexual scripts which are drawn from hip-hop culture are utilized as points of entrance and tools for reeducating Black adolescents and preventing teenage pregnancy. Finally, intervention and prevention strategies that educate teenage girls around sexual scripts and utilize personal narratives are essential to reducing teen pregnancy are presented. / text
