Multiple Versions and Overlap in Digital Text

This thesis is unusual in that it tries to solve a problem that exists between two widely separated disciplines: the humanities (and to some extent also linguistics) on the one hand and information science on the other. Chapter 1 explains why it is essential to strike a balance between study of the solution and problem domains. Chapter 2 surveys the various models of cultural heritage text, starting in the remote past, through the coming of the digital era to the present. It establishes why current models are outdated and need to be revised, and also what significance such a revision would have. Chapter 3 examines the history of markup in an attempt to trace how inadequacies of representation arose. It then examines two major problems in cultural heritage and lin- guistics digital texts: overlapping hierarchies and textual variation. It assesses previously proposed solutions to both problems and explains why they are all inadequate. It argues that overlapping hierarchies is a subset of the textual variation problem, and also why markup cannot be the solution to either problem. Chapter 4 develops a new data model for representing cultural heritage and linguistics texts, called a ‘variant graph’, which separates the natural overlapping structures from the content. It develops a simplified list-form of the graph that scales well as the number of versions increases. It also describes the main operations that need to be performed on the graph and explores their algorithmic complexities. Chapter 5 draws on research in bioinformatics and text processing to develop a greedy algorithm that aligns n versions with non-overlapping block transpositions in O(M N ) time in the worst case, where M is the size of the graph and N is the length of the new version being added or updated. It shows how this algorithm can be applied to texts in corpus linguistics and the humanities, and tests an implementation of the algorithm on a variety of real-world texts.

The text of the Pauline Epistles and Hebrews in Clement of Alexandria

The primary goal of this research is to produce a text-critical evaluation of the Pauline Epistles and Hebrews as represented in the writings of Clement of Alexandria, an early Christian theologian who lived ca. 200 AD. The result of such an undertaking will be a refined understanding of the transmission of the New Testament text at the end of the 2nd century, a time period for which we have very little textual data. Unlike our earliest New Testament manuscripts, the text of the early Church Fathers is preserved exclusively in later manuscripts. These manuscripts are often far removed from the original Patristic documents by both date and location. This results in an added layer of textual complexity for which the text critic must account, especially in the evaluation of a Church Father’s citation of New Testament manuscripts. Because of the multivalent nature of the research, the biblical data extracted from Clement of Alexandria’s writings will undergo several stages of statistical analysis comparing it to other early Greek New Testament manuscripts. The resulting data will reveal if the early text of the Pauline Epistles and Hebrews was stable (controlled) or if it underwent changes due to scribal additions and subtractions. It will also shed light on the citation techniques used by Clement of Alexandria, an early Christian reader. The combined data will allow New Testament scholars to generate a more precise critical edition of the Greek New Testament and come to a better understanding of how the earliest Christian communities transmitted the New Testament text.

Esta pesquisa propõe um mergulho no Convívio texto que Dante Alighieri redigiu nos primeiros anos do século XIV de modo a destacar a sua importância dentro da obra dantesca e das letras italianas. Para isso, em um primeiro momento, são apresentados e discutidos alguns dos problemas que envolvem a obra, como, principalmente, a língua de sua composição, as odes à filosofia como salvadora do homem, e o combate ao senso comum a respeito da nobreza do indivíduo. Optou-se por privilegiar a perspectiva do autor, que estrutura o texto a partir de um autocomentário a três de suas canções doutrinárias compostas na juventude e reapresentadas por ele nos primeiros anos de exílio político. Num segundo momento, este trabalho apresenta uma tradução integral do Convívio, sempre com a intenção de que prevaleça a suposta voz de Dante na maior parte das questões acima mencionadas. Por ser esse o texto dantesco que mais provoca discussões quanto ao seu estabelecimento, a tradução se dá a partir da edição crítica de Franca Brambilla Ageno (1995), mas destacando em nota as principais variantes textuais defendidas, principalmente nos séculos XIX e XX, por outros estudiosos e editores. Assim, tal trabalho visa sugerir a importância da discussão filológica no campo dos estudos dantescos feitos no Brasil, discussão essencial pela ausência de testemunhos originais que atestem o verdadeiro teor das palavras de Dante. / This reasearch proposes an in depth analysis of Convivio a work which Dante Alighieri wrote in the first years of the XIV century in order to show its importance in the Dantesque work and in the Italian literature. In a first moment, some problems concerning the work are presented, such as the language of its composition, the odes to philosophy as mans saviour and the battle against common sense in respect to the nobility of the individual. We chose to give privilege to the authors perspective, which builds the text from a self-comment to three of his doctrinal songs composed in his youth and brought back to the public eye in his first years of political exhile. In a second moment, this work presents a full translation of Convivio, always aiming at keeping Dantes supposed voice in most part of the matters stated above. Since this is the Dantesque text that brings more discussions as far as its establishment is concerned, the translation is carried out from the critical edition of Franca Brambilla Ageno (1995). However, notes were written to show the main textual variations defended by other students of Dantes work and editors, especially in the XIX and XX centuries. Therefore, the present work aims at suggesting the importance of the philological discussion in the field of the Dantesque studies carried out in Brazil, which is essential due to the absence of original statements that confirm the real intention of Dantes words.

Indiretamente, busca-se também fazer avançar o conhecimento do hebraico do século VIII a.C., ao se estudar tanto a existência quanto a contribuição específica do dialeto mencionado à ciência da crítica textual / The goal of this research is to contribute with de discovery of the best method of solving difficult critic textual problems in the book of Hosea through a test of one of the latest strategies, the theory of the existence of a specific dialect, the Israelian Hebrew, supposedly present in the book. The field of New Testament textual criticism is a vast area with a multitude of manuscripts to examine. Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis (hereafter referred to as D) is one of the most diverse manuscripts and has fascinated scholars for centuries with its many peculiar and notable read-ings. Where, in textual criticism, the Alexandrian text-type is the normative, D is a landmark within the “Western” text-type. This thesis examines D by collating it and one of the Alexan-drian text-type’s most attested manuscripts, codex Vaticanus (hereafter B). The collation is done using Nestle-Aland’s critical edition Novum Testamentum Graece 28 ed., because of its critical apparatus. However, due to the size of the critical apparatus the collation involves only the Gospel of John. The aim of this thesis is to search for readings in D that could indicate what context it was written in and, further, finding what tradition lies behind D. For this purpose, a database has been constructed, containing all differences between the manuscripts, classified according to types of differences and the parts of speech they involve.This thesis argues that D clarifies many of the readings of the Gospel of John with stylistic and narrative techniques, such as narrative explanations and the addition of prepositions, accu-satives, genitives and reflexive pronouns. Thus, implicit structures are avoided. Because of said clarifications this thesis argues that D was written in an environment where it was necessary to clarify uncertain aspects of the storyline. It is proposed that while Greek was the main language in the context where D was written it was not the first language of the scribe, and dialects may have affected the language in D.This thesis also argues that D reinforces the perception of the story. The Gospel of John uses the perfect tense more often than any of the other gospels, which results in the story often being perceived as ongoing rather than finished, as would be the perception of the reader. D has reinforced this tendency and also avoids theological utterances applicable to anybody, conse-quently keeping the perception in the gospel that of the story. Some passages in D also show that D has incorporated thinking from the synoptic gospels and created its own tradition.In summary, this thesis argues that some of D’s differences in comparison to B are related to provisions made for needs present in the context it was written in.

A comparative study of the manuscripts and early printed editions of the Cretan tragedy Erofili and its interludes

In this dissertation, I investigate the textual tradition of the Cretan tragedy Erofili by Georgios Chortatsis (16th century). The play, accompanied by a set of four Interludes, has survived in three manuscripts and two editions, all originating from the 17th century. All the witnesses are examined and presented thoroughly, both as autonomous texts and in comparison to each other. The examination of each witness separately sheds light not only on the history of the transmission of Erofili, but also to the production of manuscripts and printed books in Crete, the Heptanese and Venice in general. As far as the condition of the text is concerned, three witnesses preserve the most reliable texts: the second edition and the two manuscripts originating from Crete. The investigation of their relationship shows that two groups can be identified: one includes the two Cretan manuscripts and another one the three other witnesses. Νo important alterations in the plot and the sequence of events are found, so the textual variation concerns mainly the phrasing. There are indications that variation among the witnesses might have resulted from revisions by the playwright himself. The evaluation of the two groups of witnesses shows that it is not possible to consider one of them as superior, and this leads to the question which would be the most appropriate editorial method. Previous editors have followed the eclectic approach, which has many positive aspects, but cannot help the readers to realize all the stages of the transmission of the play. Since various theoretical approaches have appeared during the last decades, it has been understood that no edition can be called “definitive” and that editions following different methods can address different questions and achieve different aims. Erofili, and other texts with a rich and complicated textual tradition, can be edited in various ways and each edition can offer new insight in the history of the production, transmission and reception of the work.

A Parent Involvement Model for Increasing High School Graduation Rates in Tennessee

Low graduation rates in many Tennessee high schools present a significant problem. Many students are not prepared to graduate. Parent involvement advocates contend that the more involved parents are in their children’s education, from preschool through the secondary schooling levels, the better the probability their children will graduate from high school (Blendinger and Jones, 2003). The purpose of this investigation focusing on “best practices” literature in the area of parent involvement was to develop a strategic parent involvement model having potential for improving graduate rates among Tennessee’s high schools. The study explored the published works of Joyce Epstein, Jack Blendinger, and Linda T. Jones in the field of parental involvement for the purpose of developing a parent involvement model for implementation in Tennessee high schools confronted with low graduation rates. The model produced holds significant potential for increasing graduation rates. A qualitative research design, referred to as archival research, was used in this investigation. Data were collected for more than a 25-year period (1987-2015). Textual criticism provided an analytical method for determining practical applications regarding what educational researchers attempted to communicate in their published works. Blendinger and Adams (2015) developed a technique for data analysis involving published works that they called the majority text method. The technique employs close (critical) reading strategies for the purpose of examining similarities and differences occurring in the content provided in research reports, books, journal articles, and so forth produced by the same author or authors over a substantial period of time. Insight gained from examining the documents were transcribed in the form of notes. The notes were then carefully reviewed and analyzed. Reoccurring themes, patterns, and phrases that emerged were recorded. Themes and patterns were separated into categories to make connections between the archival data and the research question driving the study. Findings based on the published works of Epstein, Blendinger, and Jones led to the development of a strategic parental involvement model known as The Nifty Nine. The Nifty Nine consists of 9 parent involvement strategies designed to improve the partnership between home and high school.
