An edition with commentary of the Batrachomyomachia

Hosty, Matthew January 2013 (has links)
The thesis consists of three main sections: the Introduction, the text (with apparatus), and the Commentary. The Introduction begins with a survey of the available evidence for the poem’s date and authorship, before moving on to consider its generic affiliations and influences, focusing on two particular areas: its links with the ill-defined genre of παρῳδία, and its relationship to animal-narratives elsewhere in ancient literature (particularly fable) and visual art. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the poem’s style and metre, a brief tour of its Nachleben up to the 13th century, and a summary of the notoriously tangled manuscript tradition. The text is new, and differs substantially from both that of Allen (in the OCT) and of West (the most recent English edition). The apparatus, as explained in more detail on p. 117, is somewhere between the two: it takes into account the readings of only nine MSS from the 80-100 extant, and does not attempt to represent every single textual variation even among these nine, but it is much fuller than the minimalist apparatus of the Loeb. It aims to provide a useful source for scholars interested in the poem’s many and serious textual cruces, while remaining more succinct and user-friendly than the dense and sometimes baffling apparatus of Ludwich’s monumental 1896 edition. The text is followed by an English prose translation: this makes no claims to beauty, and is simply intended as a relatively literal guide to the sense of the Greek. The Commentary, finally, is twofold. Any commentary on the Batrachomyomachia will inevitably spend much space and ink on purely textual issues, and on the fundamental task of unearthing meaning from the dizzying range of wild and nonsensical variants available. Interspersed with these textual points, however, this commentary includes considerations of the poem not as a mechanics problem but as a sophisticated Hellenistic work of art – exploring its intertextualities, its characterisation, its dramatic effects, its dry sense of humour, and subjecting it to the serious literary analysis it has often been denied.

Isaïe 58 : une critique textuelle / Isaiah 58 : a textual criticism

Schrive, Isabelle 19 May 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with textual criticism and is dedicated to chapter 58 of the Book of Isaiah. This chapter of the Trito-Isaiah is particularly characterized by infrequent words and a topic present only in these verses: the theme of the fast. Our study deals with six textual witnesses represented by the Hebrew text (1QIsaa and MT), the Septuagint and the textual traditions of the Old Latin, the Vulgate and the Targum. Based on four chapters with a thematic structure which recalls the prophetic plea, this thesis involves a statistical approach, a syntactical analysis, the study of lexical fields, and finally theological tendencies specific to each textual witness. Thus, each textual tradition reflects another step of the theological thinking and also a different socio political context. The Hebrew text contains rare terms, sometimes difficult to explain. The ancient traditions meet with editorial requirements specific to each language, and also reveal editorial options. If the Vulgate shows a great fidelity to the Hebrew text, the Septuagint is quite different. The Alexandrian redactor demonstrates a real editorial originality by changing the rhetoric of the Hebrew text, introducing stylistic device and simplifying the vocabulary. The targumic redactor, for his part, introduces significant modifications, either to avoid giving the Lord anthropomorphic characters or when his omnipotence could be put into question. He also emphasizes the explicative nature of the text with syntagma insertions. Finally, each translator introduces his own theological perspectives.

Os rascunhos de O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis:os movimentos na escrita de José Saramago / The drafts of The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis: José Saramago\'s writing movements

Fares Filho, Edgard Murano 04 December 2014 (has links)
The drafts of the novel The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis (1984), by the portuguese writer José Saramago (1922-2010), offer a good opportunity to study the author\'s creative method in the light of Textual and Genetic Criticism. Through the gathering, organization and interpretation of editing marks left on the paper by the writer additions, suppressions, substitutions, inversions of words and statements, etc. it is possible to approach the editorial process that gave rise to the work. So that, in the form of a genetic and critical edition with facsimiles, the comparison between the original text and the text established in the first edition (editio princeps) helps to define the criteria that guided the interventions of the author, showing that not all changes in the original document were accepted by the printed version.

Matthew Arnold’s epics:towards a communicative approach

Alarauhio, J.-P. (Juha-Pekka) 21 January 2019 (has links)
Abstract This thesis is, on the one hand, an investigation into Matthew Arnold’s (1822–1888) literary communications and, on the other hand, an attempt to mediate between his writings and a twenty-first century readership. Arnold’s oeuvre is substantial and varied, but this study focuses on his epic poetry, which has remained a neglected part of his body of work despite its significance both to the author himself and to developing an understanding of Arnold’s development as a poet, cultural critic, and iconic ‘Victorian sage’. Furthermore, it is his epic poetry that seems to most fully address the theme of communication, and thus these longer poems function as points of orientation for a broader inquiry into Arnold’s communications. Arnold himself was keenly aware of the complicated status of communicative acts, but these complications have not always been acknowledged by the generations of criticism that have emerged since his death. Critics have thus produced images of Arnold which have not always done justice to the complexity of his communications. Based on an understanding of ‘communicative’ as a position of mediation between writers and readers, this thesis addresses the need for a more balanced communicative framework for mediating between Arnold’s writings in general — and his epic poetry in particular — his critics, and present audiences. / Original papers The original publications are not included in the electronic version of the dissertation. Um caso de apropriação de fontes textuais: memória histórica da capitania de São paulo, de Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, 1796 / A case of appropriation of textual sources: Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo, by Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, 1796

Costa, Renata Ferreira 26 October 2012 (has links)
This work through the establishment of the sources used on the paper titled Memória Histórica da Capitania de São Paulo, seeks to analyze the textual transformation in the passage from one text to another. The Memória Histórica, of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu, higher official of the Secretariat of the Province of São Paulo, is an eighteenth century manuscript deposited in the Archive of the State of São Paulo, composed mainly of texts of the eighteenth century texts written by historians, as Pedro Taques de Almeida Paes Leme Leme História da Capitania de São Vicente; Notícia Histórica da Expulsão dos Jesuítas do Colégio de São Paulo e Nobiliarquia Paulistana Histórica e Genealógica and Frei Gaspar da Madre de Deus Memórias para a História da Capitania de São Vicente. Despite the confirmation of the full reproduction of many sections and paragraphs of such works, the manuscript is not configured as a literal copy of his sources, since Manuel Cardoso intentionally intervened in the texts which served as a model for the construction of his Memória, implementing to this end, a series of changes that gave rise to a new text. In the early twentieth century, after the acquisition of this works by the State Archives, historians as Capistrano de Abreu and, especially, Afonso dEscragnolle Taunay, raised the question of its authenticity, supported by the notions of authorship and intellectual property. As a consequence, Memória Histórica was judged as a case of plagiarism, without, however, a discussion on the motivation and purpose of textual appropriation, the relationship of that text with their sources and without consideration for writing and copying practices during the period when they were constructed, being held. So, based essentially on theoretical and methodological principles, such as Critical Sources, Philology and Textual Criticism, this research focuses on the examination and collation of the sources from Memória Histórica, and it searches to establish the categorization of filtering mechanisms for these sources, so that it is possible to reveal which variants of Manuel Cardoso de Abreu in the writing process of his work and to what extent was his was intentional intervention.

Jacques Hétu’s compositional process in Suite pour guitare, Op.41

Dias, Michael Gregory 24 April 2019 (has links)
The National Library of Canada houses 3.5 meters of textual documents related to the celebrated Quebecois composer, Jacques Hétu (1938-2010). Among the working documents and biographical material donated in 1997 to the Jacques Hétu Fonds are autograph compositional documents relating to Hétu’s Suite pour guitare, Op. 41, written in 1986 (10 folios of sketch material and the composer’s fair copy). After deciphering, transcribing, and ascertaining the chronology of the sketches, an examination of the documents yields a new understanding of Hétu’s compositional process for Op. 41 (including the discovery of an unpublished movement entitled “Prelude II”) and the work’s form and structure. In addition, unpublished writings and correspondence by the composer are explored regarding Hétu’s life, musical style and his reception in Quebec. The study differs notably from traditional sketch studies in its adoption of a theoretical framework and methodology borrowed from critique génétique, or genetic criticism, a French movement of literary criticism originating in the 1970s. As opposed to traditional approaches to “genetic” documents, critique génétique dismisses the notion of a singular definitive text in favor of textual plurality by elevating the status of variants produced during the creative process (i.e. rough drafts or discarded versions). The advantage of a “genetic” approach is that it allows for the preclusion of fundamental theoretical problems associated with the use of a composer’s sketches to analyze a musical work. The extent to which the approach of critique génétique can be applied to music sketch is examined along with the consequences of adopting such a theoretical framework (including those regarding performance, editorial practice, and the ontology of completions of fragmentary works). / Graduate

Poetics in the digital age : media-specific analysis of experimental poetry on and off the screen

Muller, Sandra, n/a January 2009 (has links)
As an alternative to print media, digital media make us newly aware of the materiality of experimental poetic texts and require us to account for their media-specific differences. Although already several theoretical models have been put forward to define these differences, so far few poems have been analyzed in terms of their media-specific textual materiality. This thesis seeks to fill this gap in the applied media-specific analysis of experimental poetry. It combines traditional close reading with a media-specific approach in order to investigate the relationship between the physical characteristics and signifying strategies of four experimental poetic texts in various digital and non-digital media. It critically interrogates the specific use of the given medium in each poem, and illustrates that their respective textual materiality cannot be specified in advance based on general assumptions concerning the medium in question. A digital poem is not inherently more innovative than a non-digital poem. Rather, a poem is perceived as innovative if it resists conventional reading strategies by establishing a particularly complex, dynamic, and effectively anomalous sense of textual materiality, which necessarily only emerges from the direct interplay among text, object, and reader.
