Megaeventos, reestruturação urbana e gentrificação o caso do Projeto Porto Maravilha - Rio de Janeiro

Paradeda, Joana de Mattos January 2015 (has links)
Associated with an entrepreneurial urban governance and development based on consumption stimulation, organization strategies of current mega events are strongly oriented to different forms of leisure, tourism, sports and entertainment. Currently, the Olympics are considered the largest and with biggest impact sporting event on the world and its organization, refers to a wide range of urban interventions that, when properly organized and structured, can stimulate the qualification of urban space bringing benefits for local people. However, in a report published in 2007 by the Center of Housing Rights and Expulsion (COHRE), it was reported that between 1988 and 2008 Olympic Games have displaced more than two million people, directly and indirectly, around the world and are a major cause for price raising on housing market, generating gentrification. As a crucial part of a strategic plan adopted by the city, Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Olympics and has included in its Urban Legacy and Environmental Plan an urban restructuring of the city´s Port Region, through an Urban Operation consortium, called Porto Maravilha, study object of this work. With a theme related to gentrification processes arising from urban restructuring linked to the Olympic Games, this research aims to determine whether, after six years of Porto Maravilha Project launch and infrastructure´s first stage completed, there are gentrification process indications taking place in one location. To achieve the goal, are bounded through the construction of the analysis, four research variables for the case study: physical, economic, social and cultural. Data collection methods include file searching, physical survey, photographic survey, map production, observation and semi-structured interviews with residents, artists, merchants and service providers, located in the chosen route for analysis. Through the results description of the four variables presented, it appears that despite the area being in a transition phase, it is possible to observe the spatial area´s evidence of some fundamental features of gentrification processes, such as reinvestment in dilapidated built environment, significant increases in the housing market, standard improvements of commercial and service establishments, initial indications of changes in the population profile and new cultural discourses about the neighborhood, so redesigning the region´s profile.

OS i Kina, oberoende idrott eller politisk propaganda? : A Study of the Chinese Regime’s Political involvement, in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games / The Olympics in Beijing, independent athletic games or political propaganda?

Alm, Jens January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to describe which view the Chinese government in connection with the Olympics wants to display for the natural world and analyze if this view coincide with China’s foreign-policy goals. A qualitative content analysis is used. By using the theory of rational choice and a model with three different political approaches I want to examine whether or not the foreign-policy goals of the Chinese regime comport with the view that displays in two major newspapers in China. Since the runoff voting in Moscow in 2001 for the 2008 Olympics the Chinese government has been able to act rational and to compose different strategies to use the Games in Beijing for political propaganda. The analysis show that the governing in China make use of domestic media to put across their political message and some of the most important foreign-policy goals also occur in articles that handle the Olympic Games of 2008.

Objective – This is a case study on the participation of Brazilian developer Carvalho Hosken in the megaproject of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics (Rio2016). Given the complexity of this type of megaproject, we sought to understand the reasons that led the company to assume responsibility for the construction of the Athletes' Village, studying how this company mobilized intangible assets in the process to create value. Methodology – The single case study method was used, recovering the main decisions of the history of Carvalho Hosken’s insertion in the Rio2016 megaproject. For data collection, we conducted interviews and documentary analysis in official documents, extracted from sources such as Diário Oficial, International Olympic Committee, Rio de Janeiro Municipal Government, as well as information collected in major circulation periodicals. The semi-structured interviews took place with eight executives and managers assigned to strategic positions at the main stakeholders of the megaproject. In theoretical terms, the analysis was supported by the Stakeholder Theory, Strategic Management and Intangible Assets. Results – It was identified that Carvalho Hosken initially had the position of highly relevant stakeholder and defined its strategy based on this position, which changed over the course of Rio2016 to that of dependent stakeholder with impacts on sales results. However, despite the challenge of selling 3,374 properties of Vila dos Atletas, there were some achievements in the strategy adopted, which explain the participation of Carvalho Hosken in a project with the risk level of Rio2016, especially the question of raising the construction model and accelerating the infrastructure implementation in the region of the enterprise. Limitations - We kept out of the scope ongoing issues regarding corruption investigations involving megaproject stakeholders (COB and Odebrecht) as well as some aspects of the Brazilian political and economic crisis that began in 2013. Practical Contributions – Combining the analysis of intangible assets and stakeholder theory allowed to expand the assessment of the course that defined the company's strategy in the megaproject and in support the case conclusions. Originality - This study used as a case an unprecedented megaproject in Latin America and Brazil, which was Rio2016.
