Addressing the development of full-service schools to include learners who are deaf, using the auditory oral approach

Retief, Wilhelmina Francina 30 November 2006 (has links)
Learners who are deaf and who are using the auditory oral approach are currently included in ordinary schools in South Africa. By default, most educators are not adequately trained to include these learners successfully. Transformation and train-ing, specific to the context of inclusive education, is thus undeniable. Therefore, in order to address the development of full-service schools to include learners who are deaf and who are using the auditory oral approach, a literature study on the nature of inclusive education with the focus on full-service schools to include the mentioned learners, took place. A qualitative study was conducted and data was gathered by interviews with six, learners, parents and educators. The findings were corroborated with the literature study with a view to addressing learner and system needs in order to include these learners successfully in a full-service school. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to address the development of full-service schools to include the mentioned learners. / Educational Studies / M. Ed.

Kochlearinio implanto reikšmė žymiai neprigirdinčių ir kurčių vaikų santykių su aplinka pokyčiams / The impact of cochlear implant to the changes of considerably hard of hearing and deaf children relationship with environment

Šidlauskienė, Lina 16 August 2007 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Though the Cochlear implantation is an extremely effective prosthetic appliance for the treatment of hard of hearing people, the analysis of the impact of Cochlear implant to the changes of considerably hard of hearing and deaf children relationship with environment required lots of efforts, because this kind of children integration to society is rather new in Lithuania and there is a lack of investigations. Hearing is among the main people communication means which they use for acquiring the world they live in. According to statistics, approximately 35 children are born per annum with the diagnosis of deafness. Thus, Cochlear implantation is one of the ways to help people with hearing disability to rehabilitate and integrate into society. In 1999 the first Cochlear implantation has been performed not only in Lithuania but also in Baltic states. Up till now 75 children have been operated. The novelty of our work is composed since it is one of the first works of this kind in Lithuania. The objective of this paper is to analyze the significance of Cochlear implant to the changes of considerably hard of hearing and deaf children relationship with environment. For the implementation of the objective, the paper has been solving the following exercises: 1. To discover whether the inquiring children have been using their individual hearing-aids till implantation. 2. To analyze the choice of educational institution without reference to the time the implantation has been... [to full text]

Salvador

Guidelines to curriculum adaptations to support deaf learners in inclusive secondary schools

Skrebneva, Iliana Viktorovna 02 1900 (has links)
South Africa has recently made a significant move towards support for deaf learners in inclusive education settings. Educators in inclusive classrooms are considered primary resources for the development of the strengths and competencies of these learners. Successful inclusion of deaf learners often depends on the skills of classroom educators. Nevertheless, educators often have little or no knowledge regarding support for deaf learners in inclusive classrooms. The experiences of deaf learners were investigated in order to understand the unique needs of these learners. The aim of the research was to add bottom-up approaches to the range of curriculum adaptations necessary to support deaf high school learners within inclusive education in South Africa. A mixed methods approach was employed, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches in a triangulation research design. The findings that emanated from the quantitative research served to complement the findings from the qualitative study. The results of the empirical study were supported by the literature review to formulate practical guidelines for assisting educators to accommodate the curriculum in order to support deaf learners. These guidelines might enable educators to respond positively to the needs of deaf learners and ensure that their inclusion in the regular school is successful. / Inclusive Education / D. Ed. No. of bitstreams: 1 Osmar Roberto pereira.pdf: 1469522 bytes, checksum: 2c1ebd66d22e29d50cb2d00bf8278dd2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-13 / This paper seeks to present the experiences of three listeners, besides the author, childrens of deaf parents, discussing family relationships between parents and children, showing the differences in relation to families who have no deaf people at its core, demystifying prejudices and pre -concepts. Due to communication barriers and prejudice, many deaf people ended up being deprived of the right to be parents. In the reports presented in this thesis, there were times when it almost happened in the lives of the subjects interviewed for this research, but with strength and awareness of rights they had, these deaf parents would not allow such a thing to happen. The text begins with the history and formation of the author to then bring the authors covering topics such as deafness (Wrigley, 1996; Lacerda, 1998; Perlin, 1998; Moura, 2000; Sá, 2002; Quadros, 2004; Sacks, 2007), anthropology (Hall, 1992; Gomes, 2008), family relationships (Lacan, 1987) and autobiography (Ferraroti, 1991; Pineau, 2006; Demartini, 2008). The sign language of the deaf and educational history are also discussed in this paper. At the end are presented reports of life history made in the research field of literary form, with analyzes of testimonies collected by interviewees (deaf parents and hearing children) which showed to be son of deaf parents can be as normal as being the child of hearing parents.

Sousa, Mikaella de January 2016 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / In the last years of the twentieth century, issues about deaf education have made possible to question approaches based on clinical-therapeutic deafness discourses and models to construct a perspective about cultural, linguistic and social identity of deaf people as belonging to communities who share visual cues. In this sense, this research has allowed a dialogue with the discursive interactions (Mortimer and Scott, 2002), resulting from the meanings making in chemistry classes inserted in a bilingual educational of deaf people. To enlarge our view on the interactions established in this classroom investigated, it was necessary a verbal transcription of Brazilian Sing Language enunciations combined with the resources or/and visual aspects of Brazilian Sing Language to enhance linguistic and sociocultural characteristics occurring in the construction and negotiation of meanings, as an important role in the deaf teaching and learning process. The analytical framework proposed by Mortimer and Scott (2002), a reference framework adopted for this class analysis, allowed the identification of elements of visual meanings in the pedagogical relationship.
