Impacts atmosphériques des activités portuaires et industrielles sur les particules fines (PM2.5) à Marseille / Atmospheric impacts of harbor and industrial activities on fine particles (PM2.5) in Marseille

Salameh, Dalia 21 July 2015 (has links)
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has received considerable attention due to its impact on human health and air quality. Therefore, effective plans for human health protection require a detailed knowledge of the most relevant PM emission sources and their contributions to the ambient PM levels. Thus, this thesis aims to characterize the chemical composition of PM2.5 collected in Marseille area, and quantify the impacts of the main emission sources. To meet these objectives, a one-year monitoring campaign was conducted at the urban background site of “Cinq avenues” during the period of 2011-2012. A detailed chemical characterization of the collected PM2.5 filters was performed, and 3 receptor models were applied to this database: CMB (Chemical Mass Balance), PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization), and ME-2 (Multilinear Engine). Although based on significantly different concepts, the intercomparison exercise of the output data of the used models has generally showed a good agreement in estimating the source contributions of biomass burning (representing between 23 and 33% on annual average) and vehicular traffic (between 14 and 26%). In contrast, significant differences were observed for the industrial (1-18%) and ammonium sulfate (12-30%) sources. This study highlighted the significant contribution of organic matter (OM), which represents 42% of the PM2.5 mass, on average. Regarding the source apportionment results, one of the most striking findings is the identification of two types of biomass burning aerosol, one of which probably comes from open burning of green waste. The latter can even be considered a major contributor to the PM2.5 mass during fall and early winter

När bok blir film… : En jämförande analys av boken och filmen Catch me if you can

Juniku, Majlinda January 2008 (has links)
<p>Abstract</p><p>Title: When book becomes film... – a comparative analysis of the book and film Catch me if you can (När bok blir till film…En jämförande analys av boken och filmen Catch me if you can)</p><p>Number of pages: 46</p><p>Author: Majlinda Juniku</p><p>Tutor: Amelie Hössjer</p><p>Course: Media and Communication Studies C</p><p>Period: Autumn term 2007</p><p>University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University.</p><p>Purpose/Aim: To study what model of dramaturgy belongs to the film Catch me if you can and to see what has been crossed out, altered and added from the book so the narrative will fit this model.</p><p>Material/Method: The film Catch me if you can and the book with the same name has been used to analyze the differences between them. I have divided the differences into three categories: Crossed out, Altered and Added. In the analysis section these have been presented in each section of the film.</p><p>Main results: Catch me if you can is definetly a film made with the design of the Anglosaxon model, mostly because of its timestructure and that it portrays an action and not just a condition which is normal in the epic-lyric model. Big parts of the story have been crossed out, altered and added to make the film more acceptabel to the audience. Most of the changeshad been done to make the story shorter to fit the timeframe of a film. Events had been joinedtogether to save time but not miss anything. A character, Hanratty, has been reinforced to create a cat-and-mouse story and add excitement to the film. Other changes have been made to make the main character seem more likeable to the audience.</p><p>Keywords: book, film, dramaturgy, Catch me if you can, anglo-saxon, epic-lyric</p>

Exploring Narrator-Reader Relationships with Jim Thompson’s Victims of Circumstance: Lou Ford, Dolly Dillon, William “Kid” Collins, and Charles Bigger

Unknown Date (has links)
By examining Jim Thompson’s novels, published between 1952-1955–The Killer Inside Me, A Hell of a Woman, After Dark, My Sweet, and Savage Night–this essay interrogates the relationship created between the narrator and the reader, how the narrator–and Thompson in turn–highlights certain societal flaws, emphasizing how ethical consequence is born out of the attempt to attain freedom from one’s cultural circumstance–both in terms of economic restraint and mental health status. Through this, Thompson implies that the reader is trapped in similar economic and ethical predispositions. The reader is often left questioning what they might have done, or been able to do, in similar circumstances. This creates a larger frame by which Thompson implies that the reader is trapped in similar economic and ethical pre-dispositions as his narrators. He highlights societal flaws, demonstrating how the pursuit of freedom of one’s cultural circumstance bears ethical consequence. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Elyseu J?nior, Sebasti?o 12 May 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-04T18:29:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Sebastiao Elyseu Junior 2.pdf: 1309648 bytes, checksum: 780dfab0e8a1fc758aa3bbf94ec05941 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-05-12 / This work deals with the building and validation of a scale of ownership of self-report, based on clinical experience and in an ethological ownership theory, that postulates it as a instinctive tendency of the individual to achieve and/or mantain the dominion of one or more figures of ownership by means of instinctive patterns of ownership behaviour, regulating the provision for self usufruct and/or of the offspring. This first version was composed of 25 items, related to the ownership of the two general types of figures of ownership: people and things. These items allow the subject to indicate the degree of intensity of the answers, in a 4-point Likert scale type (1-weak, 2-medium, 3- strong, 4-excessive). The phase of building included the semantical and theoretical analysis of the items by university students and judges, respectively. The level of agreement among five independent judges in relation to its theoretical pertinence was 90% and Kappa = 0,88, being, thus, high. The sample of the test was constituted of university students (N= 296, 140 male and 156 female) from the areas of humanities, exacts and biologics, aged 18-28. The phase of validation involved the reliability valuation, the construct validity and the criteria validity. The reliability study, made by the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (N= 84, 38 male and 46 female), indicated that the secure and anxious ownership patterns and envious pattern, for people figure, and the secure and anxious ownership patterns, for thing figure, presented acceptable temporal stability in the retest (p< 0,01), four months later. The study of construct validity, made by factorial analysis by the method of analysis of principal components and Oblimin rotation, resulted in three interpretable factors (21,88% of variance), that evaluate the following dimensions: F1 - Ownership security People, F2 - Ownership security Things, and F3 - Ownership detachment. The good internal consistency of the scale was revealed by an Alpha of 0,70. As measure of external criteria, for the study of criteria validity, semi-structured clinical interviews were carried out in a smaller sample (N= 30, 15 male and 15 female). A valuation of agreement among three independent judges, the author included, about the categorisation and quantification of the answers of four interviews, of 69,69% and, by the Kappa coefficient, of 0,51, 0,43 and 0,73 for each pair of judges, was considered acceptable, suggesting the reliability of the criteria. The Spearman rank correlation coefficients, between the scale and interviews, indicated good validity (p< 0,01) for the secure (rs = 0,65) and anxious (rs = 0,73) ownership patterns and envious pattern (rs = 0,65), when they refer to the figure of person or animal. When they refer to the figure of things, the coefficients were a little more modest, but significant (p< 0,01) for the secure (rs = 0,51) and jealous (rs = 0,54) ownership patterns. A descriptive analysis of the distribuition of the referred patterns, in the general sample and by sex, has also been carried out.

Smart Filter-A Searching Approach in the e-Me Project

Ali Chachar, Mumtaz, Chaudhry, Asif Iqbal January 2011 (has links)
In the past years, the information was kept on the physical medium and people struggle more to get the right information. Everyone tries to search the information in a smart way using different scenarios. With the passage of time as computer became the essential part of daily life and the search engines came into action. When we talk about the search engines, they are also the part of Information Technology (IT) revolution to find the material or information in a simple and easy way in less time span. These search engine help in finding the information instead of the physical media quickly. By the never ending efforts of the researchers, the information which was available only in physical medium or from other resources has been transferred to a single platform using IT artifacts. Now, the efficient accessibility of this information is an issue. There are a number of e-services available on the computer network around the globe from where the users can get the information according to their needs, but some time these e-services do not provide user demanded results because of the improper implementation of IT artifacts. Our research is focused on the e-Me project i.e. a comprehensive knowledge based Electronic Assistant platform given by Innovation Lab. This project has a number of good e-services to assist the user electronically in course schedules, record of books, planning transportation, course program progress and number of other tasks at one place. This project is also used to co-design approach to initiate the users as a stakeholder. The users create a profile according to the services of the e-Me project and the users can search these services according to their needs. Our research is to provide an efficient smart filter to search information about services according to users needs. We studied the IT Artifacts and adopt the new research methodology called ―Action Design Research‖. This research is specifically adopted by researchers for the IT based system. In our research we cover the core IT Artifacts i.e. human computer interaction, user centered design, interaction design principles. These artifacts are further verified by the documents in the form of interviews and observation. The results were achieved by taken interviews from three interviewers having expertise in IT fields and they are also aware about the users‘ perception. At the end of this research we came up with the design prototype of the smart filter. / Program: Magisterutbildning i informatik

Performance of road restraint systems subjected to automobiles impact.

Neves, Renato Ramirez Viana 01 February 2013 (has links)
The main function of a road guardrail is to redirect an out of control vehicle avoiding a frontal collision or a dangerous veering off the road trajectory. Secondarily, the energy absorption measured by barrier deformation or any other energy dissipation method is beneficial to the car occupant safety. Considering the previous tasks and some severity occupant index like ASI, THIV and PHD, the performance of a guardrail and other concrete barriers are classified. Besides, it is investigated the fail mechanism of bolted connections and its influence on the guardrail impact result of an automobile. Special attention was taken into the material behavior modeling under low and high strain rates. Thereby, the need of accessing dynamic material properties motivated the design and manufacture of a Hopkinson Bar set-up for tension and compression tests up to 5000s-1. In addition, a simplified analytical model of a guardrail subjected to a static force was settled in order to validate a guardrail finite element model. A parametric study of the bolted connection failure was performed through several impact simulations of a light car model and a guardrail according to EN 1317 standard. The impact simulation results using a light vehicle car model and different barriers types were compared through the occupant severity index showing that the guardrail is a safer system than concrete barrier with New Jersey or vertical profile.

Siqueira, Oscar Graeff January 2001 (has links)

Double disability: Lived experience of Australian Tertiary Students with ME/CFS.

Morris, Dorothy, mikewood@deakin.edu.au January 2003 (has links)
This research is the exploration of the lived experience of tertiary students in Australia with the medical condition usually known as ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis /Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) seeking to explore issues of equity and human rights from the perspective of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Students feel that their difficulties are not caused just by the illness itself but by the failure of the tertiary institutions to understand the effects of this illness on them, the student, especially within the areas of accommodations and assessments. Their lived experiences are studied to ascertain if their experiences differ from those of other tertiary students. Forty participants came from every state and territory of Australia and twenty -four of Australia's universities as well as eight Technical and Further Education/Open Training Education Network (TAFE/OTEN) colleges are represented. The selection of the chosen methodology, Critical Ethnography from a Habermasian perspective, has been circumscribed by the medical condition which placed limitations on methodology and also data gathering methods. Non-structured stories, in which the participants wrote of their lived experience as students, were considered the most appropriate source of data. These were transmitted by electronic mail (with some by postal mail) to the researcher. A short questionnaire provided a participant background to the stories and was also collated for a composite overview of the participants. The stories are analysed in a number of ways: six selected stories are retold and the issues arising from these stories have been weighed against the remainder of the stories. Four intertwined themes were constructed from the issues raised in each story. Apparent infringements of the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) which impact on quality of life, human rights and equity are found. No accommodations are being made by the academic institutions for the cognitive dysfunctions and learning difficulties. Students are stigmatised and lack credibility to negotiate appropriate academic accommodations. A possible means of improving the ability of students to negotiate appropriate accommodations is explored. Finally the researcher reflects on her own involvement in the research as an 'insider' researcher.

Kroniskt trötthetssyndrom : en diskursanalys av artiklar 1989-2006

Komulainen, Heidi, Sandström, Ulrika January 2006 (has links)
<p>The purpose with this work is to describe the language that is built around the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in Sweden. Our questions are: What does the professional field look like; who writes, about what and for which kind of readers? How do they describe the expressions and the upcoming of CFS? For which reasons can CFS be considered as a medical diagnosis/illness? How can CFS be understood from a social perspective? Our theoretical starting point is a social constructive theory and also Karin Johannisson's theory about medicalization and Foucault’s theory about power. We have from a literature-exposition of Swedish articles from 1989 to 2006, done a social constructive discourse analysis with help from Laclau & Mouffe's discourse theory, and Fairclough's model of social practices. In our textual analysis we found three dominating discourses: A medical discourse, a social/cultural discourse and a general/popular discourse. Our results showed that the dominating professional category is doctors and those who have medical direction within their work. In most cases they wrote articles that searched for medical explanations of CFS and their common factor was that they looked at CFS as an illness. The articles that had a social constructive, anthropological, idea historical or religious perspective to CFS was in a minority and they often defined the phenomenon as an expression of different kind of public elements and were often critical to medicalization.</p>
