Relação pai-filha no contexto dos transtornos alimentares: uma perspectiva winnicottiana / Father-daughter relationship in the context of eating disorders: a Winnicottian perspective

Costa, Lilian Regiane de Souza 29 September 2014 (has links)
Eating Disorders (EDs) are considered psychosomatic conditions, characterized by severe alterations in eating behavior. The increasing prevalence and harms experienced by individuals with EDs make these psychopathologies receive growing attention from the scientific community. There are evidences that aspects of family dynamics influence the onset and course of the disorder. The new family configurations and the inclusion of women in the labor market demand a greater male participation in child care. Winnicott argues that, at each stage of emotional development, the father has an important role in the emotional maturation of the child. Studies show that fathers of women with EDs are not able to have a significant presence during the psycho-affective development of their daughters. In view of the lack of studies on the father figure, the objective in this study was to investigate the psychodynamics involved in the father-daughter relationship in the context of EDs. It is a clinical-qualitative research with a psychoanalytic approach, specifically Winnicott\'s theory. Six women diagnosed with EDs and their fathers participated. A semi-structured interview was held with each participant and the Procedure of Family Drawings with Stories (DF-E) was performed. Verbalizations were audio recorded with the participants\' consent. The material obtained with the DF-E was analyzed by means of the free inspection method. The findings from the semi-structured interviews and DF-E were subject to thematic content analysis. The data indicated a father-daughter relationship marked by low permissiveness of affective manifestations. The results show that the fathers, during childhood, faced absent or authoritarian father figures, as well as mother figures not available for emotional exchanges. Educated within an environment struggling to meet their emotional needs, in order to avoid access to the anguish aroused by affective dissatisfaction, the parents defensively avoided their emotions. Together with the presence of emotionally distant fathers, daughters sought their continence and acceptance. Daugthers perceived the concern and care of their fathers, but showed they were dissatisfied. It can be inferred that, in the absence of an environment that would support the daughters in integrating their experiences, they used the body as a tool to express the lack of parental affection. These study findings highlighted the relevance of paternal involvement in the symptomatic manifestation of their daughters. Thus, the inclusion of fathers in the daughters\' treatment may provide better opportunities to integrate the emotional experiences of both.

The Effect of Father Involvement on Child Sexual Decision Making

Haldane, Eva Cherie January 2018 (has links)
Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), this dissertation explores whether fathers talking to their children about dating affects the odds of their children having unprotected sex when they are emerging adults. Logistic regressions were used to analyze the relationship between one measure of father engagement, talking to the child about dating, and sexual risk taking, operationalized as having unprotected sex. Utilizing social capital theory and Lamb, Pleck, Charnov and Levine’s (1985, 1987) conceptualization of fatherhood, this paper explored the possibility that father involvement could either increase or decrease child’s sexual risk. Results from the first model indicate that talking to the father about dating increases the odds of children having unprotected sex. The results also showed that feeling close to the father was not a moderator. The second model investigated if there is a difference in the effect of father involvement by gender. Talking to the father about dating increased the odds of nonresident daughters and resident sons having unprotected sex. Feeling close to the father was not a moderator. The third model explored if there was a difference in the effects of father involvement by race and did find a difference. White resident children had increased odds of having unprotected sex if they talked to their fathers about dating. Feeling close to the father was not a moderator in this chapter. These results challenge the prominent narrative in the literature that father involvement is an unmitigated good influence in the child’s life; instead, these results show that for some children father involvement can create more harm than good. It is important to note that most fathers did not talk to their children about dating and that the specific content and tone of the conversations these fathers had with their children is unknown. There is space in the literature to explore how specific messages fathers give their children influence their sexual risk decisions in the future. There is also space for the creation of feminist focused fatherhood programs to help fathers talk to their children about dating and sex in a way that reduces child risk taking when they are older.

The becoming-father : transcultural compared study between French and Turkish men from France

Toparslan, Sarah 28 September 2018 (has links)
Given that the father is always uncertain, we tried to understand what drive French men and Turkish men from France to claim ownership of psychic fatherhood, in the contemporary world. In order to achieve this, we attempt to collect inner feelings, expectations as well as father becoming’s indicators, throughout the perinatality period. We proceed by data collection by way of singular talks of men who are in the process of becoming-father. We observed that wife primes the process leading to fatherhood at the time of the announcement of pregnancy. The imaginary link of these men to the child will forge this construction but also every protagonists with whom they will be in contact. The symbolic debt’s refund is the driving force of this construction. Indeed, the father with his own signifiers, creates a personal relation of father. The language in which he comes within plays a role : the father is eminently a cultural product.

A narrative analysis of fathers' experiences in having a child with intellectual disability. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2005 (has links)
From the stories three common pairs of themes emerged: external locus of control vs. internal locus of control, sense of responsibility vs. love and concern, and humiliation vs. pride. These themes reflected how the fathers interpreted their life, their relationship with the child and their view of self. The findings also showed that the fathers' gradual change from the arrival of the child to age 16 could be demarcated into three stages. The initial stage was filled with feelings of helplessness. The second stage was when their child settled with schooling and they became more stable and positive. The third stage was the stage when the child stepped into adolescence and they began to face their aging process. They began to be aware that they could not take care of their child forever and became anxious and worried about the child's future. From the findings, the social beliefs, values and traditional practices, social context, and personal characteristics were found to be significant factors influencing these fathers' interpretation of their experience in having a child with intellectual disability. / The stories of these fathers have provided rich materials for more in-depth understanding of these fathers who had a child with intellectual disability. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to policy-makers, service planners and practitioners of related disciplines in providing more appropriate services to give support and assistance to fathers and those families with a child with intellectual disability, and also in building up an inclusive society. / These 15 fathers were of diversified backgrounds and each of them had their unique story, but they also shared similar experiences in parenting their special child. Generally they shared common characteristics of adhering to the values of traditional Chinese males, while at the same time they also adopted some of the western ways of taking up the roles of a husband and a father. During the interviews, they were able to disclose their long suppressed feelings and reveal their struggles in overcoming the various difficulties in fathering the child. They had pains and sorrows, but they also experienced joy and pride in being the father of a special child. In the course of parenting they showed gradual acceptance of having the child but they also came to understand that their child would be their life-long burden. / This study is a narrative analysis of fathers' experiences in having a child with intellectual disability in Hong Kong. The study explored the fathers' subjective interpretation of their lived experiences. It included their reactions in having the special child, their experience of parenting the child, and the meaning derived from the experience. The cultural and contextual factors that had influenced their interpretation of their experience were also explored. Fifteen fathers who had a child aged 12 to 16 with mild grade intellectual disability participated in the study. Each of them was invited to attend two in-depth interviews with the duration of about two hours each. / Yeung Yuen chi Kwan Laura. / "July 2005." / Adviser: Mong Chow Lam. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: A, page: 2756. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2005. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 436-467). / Electronic reproduction. Exploring non-resident fatherhood and child well-being in the early years using the Growing Up in Scotland study

Rogers, Sarah Lynne January 2016 (has links)
Levels of non-resident parenthood in Scotland are substantial. The 2011 Scottish Census indicated 28 per cent of all families with dependent children to be lone parent households. Whilst non-resident parenthood is not synonymous with non-resident fatherhood, 92 per cent of such households were headed by the mother (ONS, 2014). Child well-being in non-resident father households is an issue of concern amongst policy makers and practitioners and both law and policy appear to operate on the principle that the maintenance of non-resident father-child relationships is generally conducive to child well-being. Whilst there is evidence to suggest the well-being of children in non-resident father households is typically poorer than their contemporaries in two natural parent households (Amato and Keith, 1991; Amato, 2005), and indeed evidence to suggest non-resident father involvement may benefit child well-being (Amato and Gilbreth, 1999; Adamsons and Johnson, 2013), the existing research has a number of limitations. Firstly, studies have typically adopted narrow conceptualisations of child well-being. Secondly, few studies have sought to disaggregate the total effects of non-resident fatherhood to consider both those transmitted directly and indirectly via mediating variables. Finally, increasing numbers of non-marital births coupled with evidence suggesting cohabiting relationships to be at an increased risk of breakdown in children’s early years compared to marriages (Greaves and Goodman, 2010), has culminated in increasing levels of early years non-resident fatherhood, an issue which has received less attention in the literature. Using data from the Growing Up in Scotland study this research explores associations between non-resident fatherhood and child well-being and the potential pathways through which such associations may operate. The research conceptualises child well-being as a multi-dimensional construct comprising four key domains: social, emotional and behavioural development, cognitive development, general health and material resources and uses structural equation modelling to consider the extent to which firstly, living in a non-resident father household, and secondly, non-resident father involvement is associated with child well-being directly, or indirectly, via household income, maternal mental health and parenting behaviours. The results show that, relative to two natural parent households, child well-being across each of the four domains is poorer in non-resident father households headed by a lone mother but not in those where the mother has re-partnered. Only one statistically significant direct association was found in the domain of material resources with the results suggesting much of the negative association to be transmitted indirectly via household income and maternal mental health. For those children who were reported as having some form of contact with their father, the results indicate paternal involvement to be indirectly associated with fewer social, emotional and behavioural difficulties via maternal mental health. Finally, consideration of the circumstances and characteristics associated with the maintenance of contact and levels of paternal involvement revealed maternal relationship status to be an important correlate of both contact and involvement whilst parental relationship history and circumstances surrounding the pregnancy were additionally found to be important correlates of contact. This thesis argues that simple dichotomies of father presence / absence can serve to mask the complex network of relationships underlying associations between non-resident fatherhood and child well-being. It also argues that child well-being in non-resident father households would benefit from policies which seek to alleviate financial hardship and support maternal mental health. It suggests that the maintenance of non-resident father-child relationships is potentially beneficial for child well-being and argues that promotion and support of contact and involvement in children’s early years likely requires a targeted approach. It further argues that the role of the non-resident father should be construed broadly to include consideration of support for the wider household in which the child lives.

O pai/padrasto em famílias recompostas / The father/stepfather in stepfamilies

Tiago Martins 21 June 2018 (has links)
Recent changes in the composition of Brazilian families were the result of, amongst other factors, the growing number of separations and divorces, the massive entry of women into the market, scientific and technological innovations, like the effective methods of contraception and assisted reproduction as well as measures in the health area that have increased the life expectancy of the population. All these changes contributed to the redefinition of the feminine condition, the gender relations between men and women, and the forms of exercise of motherhood and fatherhood. As a result of these transformations, there was an increase in the number of reconstituted families made up of couples living in second marriage and whose organization is quite complex, especially regarded to relations with children from the first marriage of the spouses. In some recomposed families, a man is the father of previous children, stepfather of the children of the current partner and with whom he may also have children. The objective of this research is to investigate the exercise of fatherhood and conjugal relationships in families who are composed of second union of partners who have children from previous marriage(s) and eventually from second marriage to analyze how men, who are fathers and stepfathers, experience the relationship of fatherhood with children, considering that the one(s) from the first union lives with the ex-wife, and what ties they have as a stepfather of the children of the current companion. Seven men who are fathers and stepfathers and living in second union were interviewed. Data were collected with the father/stepfather through interviews with semi-structured script, recorded and transcribed in its integrity, and analyzed according to the theoretical approaches of anthropology and psychology. The results indicated a flexibilization of the domestic tasks and children caring, changes in the experiences and the exercise of paternity, movement of the stepfathers towards a good relation with the stepchildren, maintenance of the relationship with the consanguineous children.
