Based on the Demographic Census of 1991, this work aims to understand some aspects of the female internal migration in Brasil during the decade of 1980. We analyze the displacements to all the States of the Federation, in particular those that have metropolitan areas. The specific analysis is addressed to three states of the Federation: Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Looking for connections between marital status, position on the family and characteristics of the displacements, we construct some variables for a better comprehension of the degree of autonomy dependence or association of the migrating movements. The results had shown the enormous potential of the information, especially those concerning marriage in the census of 1991, to deepen the knowledge on the subject. They also highlight the importance and specificity of women's displacements, which are not always related to their families / Doutorado / Doutor em Demografia

Abstract: The transformations in the world of the work in the 70s and, over all, from the 80s and 90s, had resulted in a crisis of the ¿Fordism¿ and in the consolidation of new trends in the world of the work, characterized by processes of reduction of the number of laborers (traditional industrial workers), increase of the outsourcing process, increasing heterogeneity with the magnifying of women in labor and intensifying of the proletariat process, characterized by the new contractual modalities that imply in precarious jobs and partial time. In a general way, the specialized literature has pointed to the fact that one of the main impacts of the productive reorganization in the dynamics of the work trade and in the daily life of the workers is the crisis of the "protecting work" and its interfaces with the growth of "the informal" activities. In this direction, the great question that leads this research expresses itself in the following fidgets: are changes in the informality of the central region of Goiânia occurring in function of this kind of transformations? In positive case, what is new in this new informality? What does it change in the profile of the ambulant ones? What would new processes characterize their insertion in the economy? How have the productive changes, associated to the new technologies, affected them? Do the crisis of the job, the productive reorganization and the precarious conditions of the formal work trade contribute for the constitution of a new heterogeneity? And, what is new in the relation of this informal sector of the central region of Goiânia-GO with the public power from the 80s and 90s?

Domestic and international trade of brazil and its macror regions: a test of the heckscher-ohlin theorem.

Márcia Istake 23 July 2003 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate, based on the trade procedures for the external and internal Brazilian trade, if the production especialization in Brazil and in macro-regions is according to the relative allotment of factors, or if there are other questions that explain the production localization. The theoritical basis came from Hecksscher-Ohlin, more specifically, from the assessment of the labor qualification and from the trade intra-industries.The theorem of Heckscher-Ohlin was confirmed for the 30 (thirty) kinds of external trade observed, at work, and it was noticed a similar behavior among the results obtained for Brazil, as a whole, and the ones obtained for its regions. In the trade evidenced among Brazil and regions of Asia, the United States, the European Union and the rest of the world, the allotment of factors establihed was the one of non-qualified labor. Considering Brazil’s trade and of the regions with MERCOSUL alone, it was noticed that Brazil and the regions offer relative abundant qualified labor. Regarding the results abtained from for the trade intra-industries, of the 30 outlinings for the external trade, only in three cases the intra-industry trade was not observed: in the Brazilian market, of the South and Southeast with the MERCOSUL. It can be suggested, then, that in the trade analyzed between Brazil and the macro-regions and their main business partners in the international market the trade intra-industries was observed in most cases, therefore, confirming the results verified in the theorem of Heckscher-Ohlin. In the test analysis of the theorem of Heckscher-Ohlin, carried out for the domestic market among ther egions in Brazil, it was noticed that the validity of the theorem was confirmed for four out of the five regions considered. Only between the Northeast and the other regions, the theorem was not evidenced. The Southeastern region was considered relately rich in qualified laborforce, whereas the other regions presented as relatively abundant in non-qualified labor. The intra-industry trade was only observed, in the domestic market among macro-regions, for the business relations of the Northeast and the Midlle-west. Based on the results obtained for the theorem of Heckscher-Ohlin, it can be suggested that the different allotment of factors was an important determiner of the production especialization, in Brazil and in the regions, either for the domestic as for the international markets. The outlining of the intra-industry trade confirms the results observed of the theorem of Heckscher-Ohlin, for almost all of the cases analyzed. It is worth pointing out that in the bibliographic review carried out in order to do this study it was not observed studies which had tested the validity of the theorem of Heckscher-Ohlin for the internal and external trade, considering the macro-regions. What was evidenced were the studies done considering Brazil as a whole. These regional tests were only possible to be carried out for the regions making use of the inter-regional model which was constituted by Guilhoto et al (2003), as well as of the detailed information about importation and exportation, published by the Ministery for the Development of the Industry and Commerce -MDIC- (Brasil, 2003) and by the microdata of the National Research by Domicile Sample – PNAD- (IBGE, 1999a).

The excessive vegetative growth in pear trees is one of the major concerns of producers, because it results in serious negative effects on the orchard, such as low formation of productive structures and competition with fruit growth. The uncertainty of the future workforce and the high cost generated by pruning mobilize the development of research to reduce the time of pruning by mechanical resources and chemicals. The use of plant growth regulators is one of the most promising alternatives for handling the vegetative growth of pear and prohexadione calcium (PCa) is the main one. Another promising technique in the vegetative growth control is the root pruning, which is an alternative to the use of plant growth regulators. The PCa reduces shoot growth by blocking the biosynthesis of gibberellins, which regulate the longitudinal growth of the shoots. The root pruning works by reducing the flow of nutrients, hormones and water to the top of the plant, limiting the shoot growth. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the control of vegetative growth and the productive capacity of pears depending on the P-Ca and root pruning. Two experiments were conducted: 1) P-Ca was applied in pear 'Le Conte' and 'Smith' in a commercial orchard in Antônio Prado, RS, Brazil. Both cultivars were treated with doses of 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg L-1 active ingredient (a. i.), the doses were applied once in the growth cycle and also when observed return of shoot growth; 2) Pear 'Shinseiki' was submitted to root pruning and application of P-Ca in the experimental field of Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil. The plants were treated with root pruning in one and two sides, P-Ca at doses of 300 and 600 mg L-1 a. i. and root pruning in one side of the plant + P-Ca 300 mg L-1 a. i.. All treatments with P-Ca application were done when the branches had 2.5-5 cm, and the root pruning occurred at the end of August, two to three weeks before the beginning of flowering. The most important results are presented separately for each experiment: 1) P-Ca was effective in reducing the shoot growth of pear 'Le Conte' and 'Smith', not requiring reapplication of the plant growth regulator during the crop in pear 'Le Conte '. The same did not affect the production of both cultivars, but the return bloom in cultivar Smith was negatively affected, decreasing the return of production. 2) The root pruning and P-Ca were effective in reducing the vegetative growth of pear 'Shinseiki', reducing both summer and winter pruning. However, the production capacity of pear 'Shinseiki' was negatively affected by the P-Ca 600 mg L-1, while the root pruning at a side of the plant + P-Ca 300 mg L-1 reduced the average fruit weight. Thus, the P-Ca and the root pruning are promising management tools to reduce shoot growth and the need for pruning in pear trees. It is recommended to use them separately.

Involuntary unemployment and financial frictions in estimated DSGE models / Chômage involontaire et frictions financières dans les modèles DSGE estimés

Devulder, Antoine 19 April 2016 (has links)
Thanks to their internal consistency. DSGE models, built on microecoc behavor, have become prevalenl for business cycle and policy analysis in institutions. The recent crisis and governments' concern about persistent unemployment advocate for mechanism, capturing imperfect adjustments in credit and labor markets. However, popular models such as the one of Smets and Wouters (2003-2007), although unsophisticated in their representation of these markets, are able to replicate the data as well as usual econometric tools. It is thus necessary to question the benefits of including these frictions in theoretical models for operational use.ln this thesis, I address this issue and show that microfounded mechanisms specifiç to labor and credit markets can significantly alter the conclusions based on the use of an estimated DSGE model, fom both a positive and a normative perspective. For this purpose, I build a two-country model of France and the rest of the euro area with exogenous rest of the world variables, and estimate it with and without these two frictions using Bayesian techniques. By contrast with existing models, I propose two improvements of the representation of labor markets. First, following Pissarides (2009), only wages in new jobs are negotiated by firms and workers, engendering stickiness in the average real wage. Second, I develop a set of assumptions to make labor market participation endogenous and unemployment involuntary in the sense that the unemployed workers are worse-off that the employed ones. Yet, including this setup in the estimated model is left for future research.Using the four estimated versions of the model, I undertake a number of analyses to highlight the role of financial and labor market frictions : an historical shock decomposition of fluctuations during the crisis, the evaluation of several monetary policy rules, a counterfactual simulation of the crisis under the assumption of a flexible exchange rate regime between France and the rest of the euro area and, lastly, the simulation of social VAT scenarios.

Changing Role of Women in the Economic Development of Taiwan / Changing Role of Women in the Economic Development of Taiwan

Shen, Yu-Ting January 2015 (has links)
The main goal of the thesis was to discover the relation between Taiwan economic development and women position with respect to the analysis of trade liberalization in Taiwan (especially after 1990) and its influence on Taiwanese economic status of women and their opportunity to participate in trade. The thesis uses descriptive analysis which is one of the quantitative method as a mean to interpret the selected data to discuss the changing role of women in the economic development of Taiwan. The conclusions from the thesis are as follows. The economic development of Taiwan has placed women at the important position. In just fifty years, Taiwan has experienced rapid economic development, which transformed the industrial structure to the service sector. After becoming officially a member of WTO in 2002, the female labor participation rate has continued to grow year by year up to more than 50% till today and most of the women participate in the service sector. Till 2014, average hourly payment of men has been 15% higher than the one of women, though the women reached higher level of education. The rising women position in the society affects that women not only postpone the age of getting married and having a baby, but also the fertility rate has been reduced to 1.1 in Taiwan.

An ecological examination of dropout rates and multiple level measures of social integration in Mississippi school districts 2005-2008: does career and technical education play a part?

Walker, Jacob Travis 11 December 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to conduct an ecological examination of the relationship between social integration and dropout rates at the school and community level, and the role of career and technical education in this relationship. This paper also attempts to determine if this relationship changes depending on how urbanicity is operationalized. This study adds to the existing research concerning the ecological relationships between dropout rates, community social integration, school social integration, and urbanicity in Mississippi. Three-year averaged event dropout rates for 2005-2008, multiple community and school measures of social integration, and three different operationalizations of urbanicity were used. Some expected relationships were found to be true while others indicate that social integration at both the school and community level are so intertwined in their effects on dropout rates that no clear pattern emerges. The varying results related to the role of urbanicity in this study provide support for the need to further examine the concepts of community and location as factors that impact educational outcomes such as dropping out of school. This is particularly important when one considers that most educational policies that are implemented in a state tend to be overarching treating school districts no matter what size they are the same. This study also highlights that there are factors that impact what one would traditionally expect to find in the relationship between dropout rates and social integration that do not hold true. For example, an inverse relationship between dropout rates and local funding was expected, but in this study the relationship was found to be positive. One possible explanation for this is related to the fact that local taxes for schools are mandated by the county government and not voted on by the people. This changes the theoretical expectations of this relationship leading to possibly false assumptions.

Intra-Household Decision Making

Mohemkar-Kheirandish, Reza 27 October 2008 (has links)
This dissertation consists of three essays. In the first one (Chapter three), "Gains and Losses from Household Formation," I introduce a general equilibrium model, wherein a household may consist of more than one member, each with their own preferences and endowments. In these models at first, individuals form households. Then, collective decisions (or bargaining) within the household specifies the consumption plans of household members. Finally, competition across households determines a feasible allocation of resources. I consider a model with two types of individuals and pure group externalities. I investigate the competitive equilibrium allocation and stability of the equilibrium in that setting. Specifically, I show that under a certain set of assumptions a competitive equilibrium with free exit is also a competitive equilibrium with free household formation. Similar results are obtained for a special case of consumption externality. Illustrative examples, where prices may change as household structures change, are used to show how general equilibrium model with variable household structure works and some interesting results are discussed at the end of the first essay. In the second essay (Chapter four), “Effects of the Price System on Household Labor Supply,” I introduce leisure and labor into the two-type economy framework that was constructed in the first essay. The main objective of this essay is to investigate the effects of exogenous prices on the labor supply decisions, and completely analyze the partial equilibrium model outcomes in a two-type economy setting. I assume a wage gap and explore the effect of that gap on labor supply. The main content of the second essay is the analysis of the effect of change in wages, price of the private good, power of each individual in the household, relative importance of private consumption compared to leisure, and the level of altruism on individual's decisions about how much private good or leisure he/she wants to consume. The effect of a relative price change on labor supply, private consumption and utility level is also investigated. Moreover, one of the variations of Spence's signaling model is borrowed to explain why higher education of women in Iran does not necessarily translate into higher female labor force participation. Finally, fixed point theorem is used to calculate the power (or alternatively labor supply) of individuals in the household endogenously for the two-type economy with labor at the end of this essay. In the third essay (Chapter five), “Dynamics of Poverty in Iran: What Are the Determinants of the Probability of Being Poor?,” I explore the characteristics of the households who fall below the poverty line and stay there as well as those who climb up later. I decompose poverty in Iran into chronic and transient poverty, and investigate the relation of each component of poverty with certain characteristics of households. I also study mobility and the main characteristics of growth in expenditure of households. One of the main issues in economic policy making nowadays is the evaluation of effectiveness of anti-poverty programs. In order to achieve this goal one should be able to track down a household for a period of time. In this essay, I am going to investigate the dynamics of poverty in Iran during 1992-95. I am especially interested in finding the characteristics of the households that fall below the poverty line and stay there in addition to those that climb up later. Obviously, if policy-makers want to have efficient policies to reduce poverty, they should target the former group. I decompose poverty in Iran into chronic and transient poverty, and investigate the relation of each component of poverty with certain characteristics of households. I also study mobility in this period with an emphasis on mobility in and out of poverty and review the main characteristics of the growth in expenditure of households. / Ph. D.

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree MAGISTER TECHNOLOGIAE in Quality Faculty of Engineering CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, 2012 / Post apartheid South Africa experienced major economic turbulence with poverty, unemployment and skills shortage, with most manufacturing and other key economic sectors affected by poor productivity and a subsequent downsizing of their labour work force. At the same time, many economic opportunities arose, including the full impact of globalisation, the emergence of China and Africa as economic partners and becoming a full member of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) economic development group by the year 2010. The government and business communities at large realised the necessity for skills augmentation in order to expedite economic development and alleviate the scarcity of employment opportunities and growth across the major economic sectors. The backdrop of the economic upheaval of 2008 and 2009 placed manufacturing firms under pressure to reconsider their current operational strategies by streamlining their organisations and adopting aggressive lean and cost saving approaches in order to remain competitive. There is a perceived lack of alignment between industry and institutions alike, sometimes resulting in a perception that graduating industrial engineers do not entirely match industry expectations. Thus, it is imperative to explore the articulation and relationship between those industries that rely on the skills of industrial engineering technologists and the graduate industrial engineers with emphasis on the skills expectations as stressed by the national priorities and the academic capacity to meet these skills expectation in today’s competitive professional arena. This perceived lack of alignment between end user requirements and the service provided falls within the ambit of the field of quality management. This study focuses on two main sample groups within two areas of interest: • The industrial engineering student community and their respective academic environments; and • the relevant industrial engineering industry and its working environment. A self-administered questionnaire coupled with a number of interviews is employed in order to gather the required data. Grouped samples, involve the relevant industry employers, students and academic institutions. The research explores the pertinent roles and responsibilities expected of industrial engineers and industrial engineering technologists on entry into the working environment, as compared to the current level of training offered by various institutional bodies as expressed by the South African qualifications authority (SAQA) and the national qualifications framework (NQF). The validation of the analysis and outcomes of the study culminates through the exploration of the following: • The influence of skills levels on productivity within the relevant industrial engineering industries. • The demand and supply of industrial engineering skills. • Skilling industrial engineering graduates for their required roles and responsibilities. • Governing bodies responsible for the curriculation of industrial engineering programmes, offered by institutions of higher learning. The study aims to proffer valuable knowledge by identifying better opportunities for employment in the industrial engineering field, the addition of value towards better industrial engineering schooling and output quality of students emerging from institutions, and lastly superseding earlier misconceived perceptions of industrial engineering.
