Recovery of uranium from uranium residue by alkaline leaching

Kweto, Bundjoko January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this work was to recover uranium from residue originating from the production of molybdenum -99. Carbonate solutions containing hydrogen peroxide or oxygen gas as oxidants were used as leachants. Experimental parameters included: different peroxide and carbonate concentrations, dissolution time and temperature. Results indicate complete dissolution of the residue at 60 oC, after thirty minutes, in ammonium carbonate solution enriched with hydrogen peroxide. Almost two hours were needed to achieve the same extent in the presence of oxygen. The yield and rate of uranium extraction were found to increase as a function of both temperature, in the range of 25-60 oC, and hydrogen peroxide concentration. The leaching kinetics were determined for various leaching conditions and the activation energy was found to be 45.5kJ/mol. The order of reaction with respect to uranium concentration was found to be unity. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering / unrestricted

Exploring the Outdoors : mapping microplastics in the textile design- and production processes

Adner, Johanna January 2018 (has links)
Microplastics have been found in all aquatic environments and once they entered they cannot be removed. This has put new focus on the sources of microplastics where the textile industry has gained large attention. Much consideration has been given to the production of fleece fabric and the use of polyester but this report aims to explore the whole design- and production process and mapping those activities which has a large impact on microplastic release. Together with participants from five (5) Swedish Outdoor Brands and seven (7) field experts has this report mapped possible challenges and solutions. Main findings are 20 different challenging areas with 19 suggested solutions on how to prevent microplastic pollution. The result is the first in its kind doing a comprehensive study of the whole textile design- and production process and provides a broad foundation for further research. As there still is a considerable lack of knowledge about many of the issues that were brought up, both within the design- and production processes, has a shared responsibility among companies, organizations, universities and private persons been raised. Through common platforms are inspiration and awareness spread and this report aims to contribute to the gap in the current knowledge.

Application of lean manufacturing in a peruvian clothing company to reduce the amount of non-conforming products

Cuellar-Valer, Stephanie, Gongora-Vilca, Angie, Altamirano-Flores, Ernesto, Aderhold, Daniel 01 January 2021 (has links)
This article describes how Lean Manufacturing tools were applied in a Peruvian textile company. A production management model is proposed whose goal is to reduce the number of non-conforming products in the pants manufacturing line. For this, all information was gathered from the production area of the company under study. With the use of quality tools, the diagnosis of the current situation of the pants line was made, identifying the most significant defects, which were 19.43% of produced units in 2018. It was determined that the main causes of the observed defects refer to non-standardized sewing processes, quality control errors, non-standardized cutting processes, and poor production planning. The application of VSM and SMED allowed the correct standardization of denim pants production, TQM allowed proper control and quality management of the production process, and JIT for optimal production planning.

Interactive Television News

Bunn, Derek L. 08 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
We design and evaluate a way to modify television news to make it interactive for viewers. We allow them to get more of what they want and less of what they don't want. This allows news to break constraints imposed by television broadcast schedules. Our solution is to augment the existing news broadcast structure in the following ways: add a video headlines menu, provide on-demand access to additional story content, provide interactive navigation controls between stories, and a control overlay. For news producers we create a video annotation program and process to help create the interactive news. We use the production tools in a news production room for a week to show viability. We also evaluate the home interactivity by having viewers provide feedback after watching the interactive news produced during that week. Our results show that our solution easily fits into existing news production processes. The solution provides additional depth into stories and individualizes the newscast for each viewer. The interaction for viewers is optional and easy to use, but future work could make it even easier to learn and use.

Modeling of informed process supply chain using RFID technology: a case study for agribusiness chain.

Candido, Roberto 22 May 2013 (has links)
This paper aims to present a methodology to deploy a Process Model Informed \"Supply Chain\" using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) applied to Agribusiness and Precision Agriculture. The intent of this proposal is to allow tend users of precision agriculture product to handle all the data need to ensure the quality of a target product. Traditional applications of RFID have been limited to product placement in stores, leaving a wide possibility of innovations in Supply Chain management. This case is strongly observed in agribusiness, a very important issue in Brazilian economy, where commodities are susceptible to failure or block orders. The coalescing of knowledge from Supply Chain, Process Informed, RFID and Agribusiness Study is made by a fair distribution of information among tags and databases, generally connected to RFID readers. Finally, a case study was included related to the supply of corn seeds to a culture inserted in the paradigm of precision agriculture.

A method to support accessible video authoring / Um método de apoio à autoria de vídeos acessíveis

Villena, Johana Maria Rosas 06 May 2016 (has links)
Human qualities are only developed in human society by means of interaction with others. Since a child is born, he/she sees, hears, touches, and tastes things. That means visual and aural stimuli are natural for human beings and these stimuli are also present on videos. Perhaps, this is the reason why videos have a huge impact on society. An evidence of the popularity of videos growing in society can be observed in the large volume of videos uploaded onto YouTube or the number of videos posted on Facebook. Besides, the rise of smartphones has increased the number of users that not only watch but also produce videos. However, what happens to people who cannot access those contents because they have disabilities or some temporary illness. To avoid excluding people from understanding video content, it is important to provide a video with accessibility. Thus, about 23.9% of the Brazil population who declared themselves with disabilities will benefit from accessible videos. Standards, laws and regulations to promote video accessibility have been developed. Research studies about accessible video players, improving captioning, resources about sign language, and implementation of the content enrichment have also been developed. In spite of the video production process being well defined, current research and market practices do not take accessibility into account as part of its stages. They do not explain how amateur authors can create alternative content following guidelines or how to incorporate accessibility guidelines to the video production process. This thesis proposes a method, called Video4All, for alternative content authoring as part of an accessible video production process. Video4All is composed by a set of activities, including alternative content guidelines, and alternative content evaluation. A case study was conducted to verify the effectiveness of applying the proposed method by amateur authors, evaluating their generated alternative content. In order to describe the process, was incorporated accessibility in all stages and the case studies reported the difficulties which users had during the interaction with an accessible video player. Additionally, the proposal involved the development of an alternative content evaluation method as a means to provide a quality measure, enabling authors to better understand the accessibility level of the alternative content they create. The accessible video production process can be used by any amateur author to improve the accessibility of their videos. Moreover, Video4All helps the authoring and evaluation of alternative content.

The largest commercial beef herd in the world, which is around 205.3 million animals (IBGE, 2009). Remaining on the top of the ranking depends on technology implementations in the industry and a greater knowledge of the entire production process of beef cattle, mainly the identification of bottlenecks. The RFID technology, which is based on automatic transmission of data, has become a useful tool in various aspects of any productive sector. Throughout this technology one is able not only to track their products throughout the production process, but also do inventory control, logistics, quality control, with constant monitoring of temperature and moisture, which are essential for health y food, all done automatically in real time . The objective of this work was to analyze a solution for the control of traceability in the production process of a slaughter house using RFID technology. This monitoring can be accompanied from anywhere, and anytime because the RFID system uses the middleware that processes data read by the physical layer and provides them to various environments such as the Web. As a result to analyze has the confirmation of the feasibility of using RFID technology in such an unusual environment as the example of the production process in a slaughter house.
