Communication for Development in “Mithilanchal”

Jha, Tanushree Sandilya January 2013 (has links)
ABSTRACT “There are many ways of conceptualizing development, ways that foreground economics, politics, culture, or a combination, and within each of those realms, ways that emphasize processes or structures or both and their relationships. Further, in some perspectives development is geographically inclusive, whereas in others the focus is the so-called Third World or developing countries and their aid needs”. (Wilkins, 2000, p.7) Considering the term ‘development’ in above quote, this thesis focuses on poverty and under-development prevailing in Mithilanchal region in India, the caste system which divides the society and its direct and indirect consequences. India, whether called a Third World country or a developing country, the difference between the developed and deprived regions can be well spotted and the aim of this thesis is to track how communication and other media tools have been helpful in development of society so far and then analyse how similar development can lead to more liveable society. The division of Mithilanchal region between the Elite and Mass led to control of Media by the powerful Elites. The flow of information was more diffusive (one-way / top to bottom) than participatory (both way) and with new media and ICT making its place globally, awareness increased along with the participation of people from different strata of society. This thesis explores on how instrumental media has been in enlightening the society over the period of time, what impact media and its various forms have had in everyday life of commoners and how people living in deprivation look up to the media for it to be more available and accessible. With the help of qualitative interviews and questionnaire surveys conducted in the region, the thesis concludes that people have had the benefit of media’s presence since long. Traditional - Communication media did leave impact on people’s lives and even today, those who live in these regions are looking forward to more economic, political and social development with the help of new media and ICT. The various positive transformations in unequal social structure brought out with help of communication is aimed to be discussed by the end of the thesis.

Discursive ambiguities: feminist responses to the mass media

Vicente, Andresa Natacha Gomes de Almeida 30 November 2003 (has links)
This dissertation explores how representations of women in the media function as heterodesignations in response to the current socio-economic cultural complex of globalization. In its merger with reality, the media has become the dominant discourse and the means through which prevailing modes of self-understanding are made available in postmodern society, of which the simulacrum is a key feature. Representations of women in the media in general, and in television advertisements in particular, are not, in any way, subversive of hegemonic discourse and, despite the prevalent ambiguity of these images, construct women in conformity with traditional gender stereotypes. Through practices of deconstruction, such as feminist counter-cinema, of which the film Female Perversions is an example, feminism has an important role to play in liberating women from the oppressive effects of these representations, even if these efforts are not, in themselves, free from ambiguity. / English Studies / M.A. (English)

The Evolution of the Library Media Center: A Study of the Past, Current, and Projected Future Library Services Available in Johnson City, Tennessee

Hawley, Johnnie Sue 01 May 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to indicate changes in library services available to the citizens of Johnson City, Tennessee. The study covered library services available in educational and public settings for patrons from preschool to adult ages. Librarians in this study all worked in either a public library located in Johnson City, TN or worked in the Johnson City School System as a media specialist in either an elementary, middle, or high school. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of librarians to gain their perceptions of the library and their roles within the libraries of Johnson City. Librarians were interviewed to determine their views in the past, present, and future of the library as an establishment. Documents from the various libraries were also analyzed to determine changes in library services. Various themes emerged from the data analysis. Participants discussed their roles as librarians, the library as an institution, and collection development. Other themes that emerged were discussions of library materials that were now or would become archaic. Participants also made projections as to the future of the library itself and whether or not it would become obsolete. The results of this study suggest that libraries will continue to evolve as technologies and community needs and expectations change. The appearance of the library will evolve to contain more learning spaces for active and group learning. The role of the librarian will evolve as the technology evolves. It will become more focused upon teaching patrons how to use learning tools and access information rather than simply managing and controlling the library’s assets. The librarians’ role has the potential to become one of service leadership in the community and in the school setting. The impact of the library and the librarians’ role will directly affect students, teachers, and community members. Recommendations from this study may assist in transitioning the librarian/media specialist’s role to a great service leadership model that supports individual growth and community development.

醫師勞動的媒體論述 / The discourses of doctor's labour in the media

楊睿愷, Yang, Jui Kai Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis investigates how the United Daily News(UDN) represented the doctor’s labor process in Taiwan between 1985 and 2010, taking 1995 as the watershed when the National Health Insurance (NHI) was implemented, prior to and after which the working conditions of medical people have experienced substantial changes. As such, the UDN did register differences in its treatment of related events accordingly. The current study has focused upon issues related to conglomeration, doctor-patient relationship and medical malpractice, limits of medicine and deprofessionalization, emotional labor, negative medical ethics, as well as health care system debates etc.. Images and discourses of doctors in the media have changed across two period of time. It becomes clear that since 1995 the doctor-patient relationship has been getting worse, while medical negligence increased and deprofessionalization of medicine multiplied. In addition, with the introduction of NHI, there were more medical ethics violation and capitalists have made more gains with medicalconglomeration. Another factor contributing to the increase of medical news is the arrival of a consumerist society, and simultaneous changes of medical environment and policy. Although there is such a transformation of Taiwan’s health system, the media has however failed to represent adequately the doctor’s changing labor process and conditions. The UDN has not covered such topic until very recently in the wake of several protests arising out of worsening medical environment. In conclusion, Taiwan’s media has paid insufficient attentions to various significant issues, doctors’ physical labor and their emotional labor, commodified medical services and its conflicts with universal rights of health are among the most eye-catching.

Reprezentace výtvarného umění v Událostech v kultuře během prvních dvou let vysílání programu ČT art (srpen 2013 - srpen 2015) / Representation of visual arts in Události v kultuře during the first two years of broadcasting of the television block ČT art (August 2013 - August 2015)

Lebedová, Veronika January 2016 (has links)
The main topic of this thesis is the role of media in society with respect to the relation between media, society and culture. The thesis aims to reassess selected issues, based on critical theory of media and society, and to verify their relevance in contemporary Czech context. These subjects are theoretically based on several concepts of authors connected with the so called Frankfurt School and on the critical theory developed by their followers. Their opinions are applied on the Czech environment through the perspective of cultural studies because of the shift in social and historical context since the former theories appeared. After media studies left the ideas of technological determinism, their dominant paradigm has changed to social constructivism, being interested in the meaning of media contents. In cultural studies, the meaning is interpreted using tools of structural and semiotic analysis. The same research perspective and method are applied in this thesis. Considering the interpretation of meaning in the representation of art in the program Události v kultuře, we could partly reflect on the mythology and ideology of Czech society in its relation to culture. The primary result of the empirical research is the fact, that media messages about art represent (implicitly or explicitly)...

Užívání tištěných a online médií mezi ženami a muži na mateřské nebo rodičovské dovolené / Use of print and online media among women and men on maternity or parental leave

Řehořová, Lidmila January 2020 (has links)
The thesis deals with the role of media in the life of "young" parents. The theoretical part presents the current trends in the attitude to printed and online media for a selected target group, specifically women and men on maternity and parental leave. The principal question of the thesis is the attitude of a selected group of people to the media content. Has the relation to the media subjectively changed in this new life role? The research method is a qualitative interview with ten respondents (seven women and three men). The analysis is based on methods of grounded theory - first at the level of open coding, then the axial coding. The conclusion summarizes the researched findings, and among other things, whether the interviewees see changes in their relation to the media due to parenthood and if they do, which changes they realize.
