The labor theory of value and the transformation problem: an analysis with focus on the temporal single-system interpretation

Souza, João Paulo Afonso de 01 August 2007 (has links)
The problem of the transformation of values into prices of production provides a suitable basis on which to discuss the validity and the scientific status of the labor theory of value. In this thesis, we attempt to understand two of its main aspects. First, we study its meaning in Marx?s presentation of the categories of the capitalist economy in Capital. We show that the transformation is a fundamental process in that it enables the Law of Value to effectively regulate the economic system and, by doing so, allows for capital accumulation. Second, we study the main modern interpretations that have followed the publication of Marx?s transformation procedure in Capital Volume III, with emphasis in the most recent of them, the Temporal Single-System Interpretation. We discuss their main theoretical and computational problems in connection with the preceding analysis. In the end, we propose a few questions for future research.

Values and value in design

Mills, Grant R. January 2013 (has links)
Relatively little is known about how concepts of human values and value interact during the construction design process. Whilst researchers of value management have expounded in this context upon the complexity of the design process, problem-solving and sense-making, little is said about the alignment and reconciliation of multiple-stakeholder values and value judgements. An abductive reasoning and a grounded theory approach was adopted that iterated between literature and empirical observation to obtain new insights. The initial phase created a values and value framework and Value in Design (VALiD) approach through seven unstructured interviews, a design workshop, four Schwartz Values Surveys (with 545 participants) and 55 semi-structured interviews. The values and value parts were then separately implemented, developed and validated through action research on five live education capital projects, involving over 250 participants. Subsequently, a middle-range theory of values and value is proposed through theoretical triangulation. This draws on seven related theories to provide greater explanatory pluralism, uncover hidden phenomena and enable convergence. The research findings are significant in focusing soft value management on underlying stakeholder values and subjective value judgements. A more nuanced and intertwined relationship between stakeholder values, attitudes, behaviours and qualities during the design process is offered that promotes compromise and sense-making.

Conclui-se, por fim, como fato indiscutível, que o atual e acelerado processo de envelhecimento está alterando as respostas do Estado diante dessa manifestação da questão social, e em relação a ela, e na sua direção o capital incorpora como estratégia para sua reprodução ampliada / Considering the theory of labor value in Marx and, considering that the creation of value in capitalist society depends on consumption by the capital - the value of the use of the commodity labor power, this thesis sought to problematize the dual and contradictory movement of appropriation and expropriation of capital by old age. We conducted a literature review and documentary, from the Marxist referential, seeking dialogue with the authors from theoretical categories that provided relating aging and old age of the worker to the mundialização of the economy and capital restructuring, whose effects are to reveal the perverse world of work. Result of this approach the following issues: the myths and stereotypes that characterize old age as dependent, as synonymous of suffering and lack of physical beauty, they re gradually being overcome. The capitalist has realized that it is not strategic play such myths and stereotypes. Old age is a source of marketing possibilities and in this sense, is a source of realization of surplus value. The capital rotation and renovation of their cycles in the production process depend both on the exploitation of labor in the productive sphere, the consumption of goods. He guided the reflections, the formation of relative overpopulation. As a result of the historical movement, the elder nowadays not only inhabit the sphere of pauperism. Fruit of social struggle, the working class has won "the right to aging." By retirement or welfare policies through monetary transfer, the elders have income. This means that even in a situation of poverty and indigence, are also workers who pass by other forms of relative overpopulation. We conclude, finally, as indisputable fact, that the current and accelerated aging is changing the social relations: in capitalist accumulation and the responses of the state

The ongoing capitalist crisis, triggered in 2007, put back in the center of the political debate the issue of the relations between state-law regulation and capitalist market economy. In this context, the problem of the manifold relations between law and capitalism can be put into new perspective. In this thesis, through a reading of the Marxian critique of political economy driven by an analysis of value-form, we sought to re-propose a radicalized version of the Marxist critique of law, conceiving it as a regulator inextricably tied to the fate of commodities producer socialization / Doutorado / Sociologia / Doutor em Sociologia

A model to investigate the impact of flooding on the vulnerability of value of commercial properties

Bhattacharya, Namrata January 2014 (has links)
Flooding has the potential to have significant impact on the value of properties depending on the level of inherent vulnerability. Experts argue that it is not the actual risk but the perception of risk among property holders that influences vulnerability of value. The hypothesis that changing perception of flood risk could make property value vulnerable in the market is the main focus of the research. This dimension of research has received very low attention in commercial property literature. The existing knowledge base of flooding and property value reveals that focus has been largely associated with residential properties. Conceptual understanding of the extent and scale of the effect of flooding on the vulnerability of property value of commercial properties would be worthwhile for relevant stakeholders. The research methodology follows a quantitative approach with sequential application: of literature review, conceptual model generation, data collection from primary and secondary sources with remote questionnaire survey of selected study areas in the UK. The conceptual model was operationalised using analysis and interpretation of the collected data and finally cross validated with secondary data gained from commercial real estate experts . The strength of this research lies in the conceptualisation of the subject matter of property value in the context of flood vulnerability. This work provides innovative conceptual insight towards business vulnerability and vulnerability of value. The variables contributing towards vulnerability were hierarchically ranked using both collected data and deductive methods. The patterns of impact and recovery analysis emphasized that within the commercial sector indirect effects of flooding should be given equal importance with direct damages. The implication of perception on the vulnerability of property value showed a slightly different picture from business vulnerability in the chosen study areas when differentiated based on flood experience. In a nutshell the study reflected that the commercial property sector does not take flooding as one of their priorities. This is in part due to differential attitude towards risk of the population within the flood plain based on their knowledge and experience of flooding. The perception of stakeholders towards vulnerability of value can change with increasing magnitude and severity of floods and it is possible that the implications on market value of commercial properties will be visible in the future. Practitioners and researchers will find this study useful in developing an understanding of the vulnerability of commercial property value in the context of changing flood risk.
