The period chosen to be analyzed goes from 1980 up to 1998. In order to evaluate how this repercussion movement happened, we dealt with the historiographical production of the Brazilian Historian, Sidney Chalhoub, as well as his contribution as a Professor and the participation of Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) as the disseminator and propagator institution of Thompson s historiography in the country. In addition to the history works, we used as resources for this study, the interviews with Chalhoub, the ementas of the programs of the disciplines taught in the History Course of Unicamp in the period of 1980-1998 that were filed in the Secretaria de Graduação da Unicamp. This dissertation has been inspired by the historiographical studies and it is present in the history of historiography.

Reexamining the 1950s American Housewife: How Ladies Home Journal Challenged Domestic Expectations During the Postwar Period

Bonaparte, Margaret 01 January 2014 (has links)
My thesis examines the role that Ladies Home Journal played in challenging the ideals of domesticity that emerged in the postwar period in the United States. Originally founded in 1883, Ladies Home Journal emerged from World War II as the most popular and highly circulated women’s magazine. Husband and wife duo Bruce and Beatrice Gould served as co-editors-in-chief from 1935 to 1962, and populated the magazine with numerous ambitious and talented female writers and editors. Many of these female staff members also married and had children, while maintaining their careers. During an era where employees discriminated against women in the workplace, Ladies Home Journal employed women and published numerous articles supporting women in the workplace. In 1963, Betty Friedan claimed that women’s magazines only perpetuated the idealized, feminine housewife, but I argue that her argument oversimplifies the complexities women’s magazines represented during the 1950s. Divided intro three chapters, I analyze the shifting working conditions for women between the 1940s and 1950s, then unearth the working culture of Ladies Home Journal during the postwar period through an analysis of the editors, writers, and articles. Lastly, I examine three female journalists, Dorothy Thompson, Betty Hannah Hoffman, and Maureen Daly who all regularly contributed to the Journal.

Exploration-exploitation with Thompson sampling in linear systems / Algorithmes de Thompson sampling pour l’exploration-exploitation dans les systèmes linéaires

Abeille, Marc 13 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is dedicated to the study of the Thompson Sampling (TS) algorithms designed to address the exploration-exploitation dilemma that is inherent in sequential decision-making under uncertainty. As opposed to algorithms derived from the optimism-in-the-face-of-uncertainty (OFU) principle, where the exploration is performed by selecting the most favorable model within the set of plausible one, TS algorithms rely on randomization to enhance the exploration, and thus are much more computationally efficient. We focus on linearly parametrized problems that allow for continuous state-action spaces, namely the Linear Bandit (LB) problems and the Linear Quadratic (LQ) control problems. We derive two novel analyses for the regret of TS algorithms in those settings. While the obtained regret bound for LB is similar to previous results, the proof sheds new light on the functioning of TS, and allows us to extend the analysis to LQ problems. As a result, we prove the first regret bound for TS in LQ, and show that the frequentist regret is of order O(sqrt{T}) which matches the existing guarantee for the regret of OFU algorithms in LQ. Finally, we propose an application of exploration-exploitation techniques to the practical problem of portfolio construction, and discuss the need for active exploration in this setting.

Fear and Loathing on the Green Hills of Africa

Miller, Donald 18 May 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this article is to establish a textual parallel between Hunter S. Thompson`s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Ernest Hemingway`s Green Hills of Africa. Thompson took Hemingway’s novel as a challenge to write under extreme duress. Thompson twisted many passages from Green Hills to fit his own text. He used bitter irony to translate Hemingway`s text into his own “Gonzo” reportage. Thompson`s friend and traveling companion, Oscar Z. Acosta, is used as an example of how Thompson rewrote Hemingway. Acosta`s Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo is referenced as the nexus of the two novels, making Acosta the primary focus of Thompson`s rewrite. These men, their methods, and their works fit together under Thompson`s pen. Hemingway`s religious, racial, and bestial imagery are included in Thompson`s narrative. However, these images are made ironic and do not plagiarize the original copy.

Groupes de Thompson projectifs de genre 0

LAGET, Guillaume 01 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)

The Death of the Freedom Lie in The Graduate and the Mutation of the American Dream in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Axelrod, Daryl 01 January 2008 (has links)
The type of commentary a narrative is able to make is fully dependant on the type of narrator who is relating it. The visual elements present in a film are the true narrational forces which guide it. The presence of the camera, the use of lighting, the architecture, and the objects present in the film each have their own meaning. These elements come together to make a greater commentary than the dialogue. How these meanings interact with each other is what defines what type of narrator is present in the film. By analyzing what type of narrator is relating the story it is possible to examine what commentary the film is able to make. Mike Nichols? 1967 film The Graduate and Terry Gilliam?s 1998 film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson?s 1971 literary work Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas make commentaries that act as bookends for the ideals of the youth culture during the late 1960?s. Where as The Graduate is condemning the shining emptiness of 1967 suburban California society which its narrator inhabits, Fear and Loathing?s narrator is depicting the twisted abomination which grew within the emptiness of that society during those four years. The fact that Gilliam?s adaptation came 27 years after the source material was created allows for an even more specific translation of Thompson?s message. The Graduate is looking towards the unknown future where as Fear and Loathing is look backwards at the results. The Graduate is commenting on the current situation and looking forwards where as Fear and Loathing is looking backwards to see what has happened in the interim. It is this difference that forces the type of narration and the visual style employed by the films to be diametrically opposed.

Geotechnics and hydrology of landslides in Thompson River Valley, near Ashcroft, British Columbia

Bishop, Nicholas Franklin January 2008 (has links)
Landslides in Pleistocene sediments along the Thompson River, south of Ashcroft, British Columbia have been known since before the Canadian Pacific (CP) railway was built through the valley in the 1880s. The Canadian National (CN) mainline railway, built in the early twentieth century, also follows the valley. Since the CP mainline was open to traffic in 1886, landslides have occurred along both sides of the Thompson valley and have resulted in derailments and traffic disruption along this strategic railway corridor. Past work identified a critical interbedded glaciolacustrine silt and clay unit at the base of the valley fill in which the sliding planes of the landslides were located. In our geotechnical characterization of this unit we identify the clay as the main contributing factor towards the instability of slopes in the Thompson River Valley due to its low residual strength parameters. Ring shear testing of this unit indicate residual friction angles between 10o and 15o. The use of residual shear strength parameters is necessitated by the presence of pre-sheared surfaces in the valley fill material caused by historical landsliding and glacial overriding. An additional contributing factor to slope instability in Thompson River Valley is the presence of artesian pore water pressures located below the failure surfaces of landslides in the valley. Previously suggested explanations for development of the elevated pore pressures include dynamic change in the Thompson River stage, and over irrigation of upslope farm lands. Groundwater models of Thompson River Valley were constructed using the advanced modeling tool HydroGeoSphere in order to determine the origin of these elevated pressures, and to explore additional influences on the regional groundwater flow system, including irrigation and river stage. Analysis of groundwater simulations showed that due to its low permeability, the glaciolacustrine silt and clay unit is important in controlling groundwater flow patterns, and explains the development of artesian pressures in the valley bottom. Further, it was shown that fluctuation in river stage and additional infiltration due to irrigation of upslope farm lands had minimal impact on pore water pressures, and cannot explain the development of landslides in the study area. Groundwater simulations were coupled with slope stability analyses in order to assess the slope Factor of Safety associated with certain groundwater conditions. This was achieved by using SLOPE/W and SEEP/W. Slopes were found to be unstable under natural conditions with a Factor of Safety close to unity. Significant changes to the Factor of Safety were noted for scenarios where precipitation was doubled and halved, but irrigation was again shown to have a minimal effect on the stability of Thompson Valley slopes.
