Simulating Low Frequency Reverberation in Rooms

Svensson, Mattias January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to make a practical tool for low frequency analysis in room acoustics. The need arises from Acad’s experience that their results from simulations using raytracing software deviate in the lower frequencies when compared to field measurements inrooms. The tool was programmed in Matlab and utilizes the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method, which is a form of rapid finite element analysis in the time domain.A number of tests have been made to investigate the practical limitations of the FDTD method, such as numerical errors caused by sound sources, discretization and simulation time. Boundary conditions, with and without frequency dependence, have been analysed bycomparing results from simulations of a virtual impedance tube and reverberation room to analytical solutions. These tests show that the use of the FDTD method appears well suited for the purpose of the tool.A field test was made to verify that the tool enables easy and relatively quick simulations of real rooms, with results well in line with measured acoustic parameters. Comparisons of the results from using the FDTD method, ray-tracing and finite elements (FEM) showed goodcorrelation. This indicates that the deviations Acad experience between simulated results and field measurements are most likely caused by uncertainties in the sound absorption data used for low frequencies rather than by limitations in the ray-tracing software. The FDTDtool might still come in handy for more complex models, where edge diffraction is a more important factor, or simply as a means for a “second opinion” to ray-tracing - in general FEM is too time consuming a method to be used on a daily basis.Auxiliary tools made for importing models, providing output data in the of room acoustic parameters, graphs and audio files are not covered in detail here, as these lay outside the scope of this thesis.

Efficient broadband antenna array processing using the discrete fourier form transform

Sayyah Jahromi, Mohammad Reza, Information Technology & Electrical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
Processing of broadband signals induced on an antenna array using a tapped delay line filter and a set of steering delays has two problems. Firstly one needs to manipulate large matrices to estimate the filter coefficients. Secondly the use of steering delays is not only cumbersome but implementation errors cause loss of system performance. This thesis looks at both of these problems and presents elegant solutions by developing and studying a design method referred to as the DFT method, which does not require steering delays and is computationally less demanding compared to existing methods. Specifically the thesis studies and compares the performance of a time domain element space beamformer using the proposed method and that using an existing method, and develops the DFT method when the processor is implemented in partitioned form. The study presented in the thesis shows that the processors using the DFT method are robust to look direction errors and require less computation than that using the existing method for comparable performance. The thesis further introduces a broadband beamformer design which does not require any steering delays between the sensors and the tapped delay line section as is presently the case. It has the capability of steering the array in an arbitrary direction with a specified frequency response in the look direction while canceling unwanted uncorrelated interferences. The thesis presents and compares the performance of a number of techniques to synthesize an antenna pattern of a broadband array. These techniques are designed to produce isolated point nulls as well as broad sector nulls and to eliminate the need for the steering delays. Two of the pattern synthesis techniques presented in the thesis allow optimization against unwanted interferences in unknown directions. The techniques allow formulation of a beamforming problem such that the processor is not only able to place nulls in specified directions but also able to cancel directional interferences in unknown directions along with a specified frequency response in the look direction over a band of interest. The thesis also presents a set of directional constraints such that one does not need steering delays and an array can be constrained in an arbitrary direction with a specified frequency response. The constraints presented in the thesis are simple to implement. Based on these constraints a pattern synthesis technique for broadband antenna array is also presented.

Dispersion Engineering : Negative Refraction and Designed Surface Plasmons in Periodic Structures

Ruan, Zhichao January 2007 (has links)
The dispersion property of periodic structures is a hot research topic in the last decade. By exploiting dispersion properties, one can manipulate the propagation of electromagnetic waves, and produce effects that do not exist in conventional materials. This thesis is devoted to two important dispersion effects: negative refraction and designed surface plasmons. First, we introduce negative refraction and designed surface plasmons, including a historical perspective, main areas for applications and current trends. Several numerical methods are implemented to analyze electromagnetic effects. We apply the layer-KKR method to calculate the electromagnetic wave through a slab of photonic crystals. By implementing the refraction matrix for semi-infinite photonic crystals, the layer-KKR method is modified to compute the coupling coefficient between plane waves and Bloch modes in photonic crystals. The plane wave method is applied to obtain the band structure and the equal-frequency contours in two-dimensional regular photonic crystals. The finite-difference time-domain method is widely used in our works, but we briefly discuss two calculation recipes in this thesis: how to deal with the surface termination of a perfect conductor and how to calculate the frequency response of high-Q cavities more efficiently using the Pad\`{e} approximation method. We discuss a photonic crystal that exhibits negative refraction characterized by an effective negative index, and systematically analyze the coupling coefficients between plane waves in air and Bloch waves in the photonic crystal. We find and explain that the coupling coefficients are strong-angularly dependent. We first propose an open-cavity structure formed by a negative-refraction photonic crystal. To illuminate the physical mechanism of the subwavelength imaging, we analyze both intensity and phase spectrum of the transmission through a slab of photonic crystals with all-angle negative refraction. It is shown that the focusing properties of the photonic crystal slab are mainly due to the negative refraction effect, rather than the self-collimation effect. As to designed surface plasmons, we design a structured perfectly conducting surface to achieve the negative refraction of surface waves. By the average field method, we obtain the effective permittivity and permeability of a perfectly conducting surface drilled with one-dimensional periodic rectangle holes, and propose this structure as a designed surface plasmon waveguide. By the analogy between designed surface plasmons and surface plasmon polaritons, we show that two different resonances contribute to the enhanced transmission through a metallic film with an array of subwavelength holes, and explain that the shape effect is attributed to localized waveguide resonances. / QC 20100817

Takhedmit, Hakim 18 October 2010 (has links)
The work presented in this thesis is included within the theme of wireless power transmission, applied to wireless powering of sensors, sensor nodes and actuators with low consumption. This study deals with the design, optimization, fabrication and experimental characterization of compact, low cost and efficient Rectennas (Rectifying antennas).A global analysis tool, based on the Finite Difference Time Domain method (FDTD),has been developed and used to predict with a good precision the DC output of studied rectennas. The packaged Schottky diode has been rigorously modeled, taking into account the parasitic elements, and included in the iterative FDTD calculation.Three new rectennas, with microstrip technology, have been developed and measured. They operate at 2.45 GHz and they don’t need neither input HF filter nor via hole connections. Efficiencies more than 80 % have been measured when the power density is 0.21mW/cm² (E = 28 V/m). An output DC voltage of about 3.1 V has been measured with anoptimal load of 1.05 k_, when the power density is equal to 0.31mW/cm² (34 V/m).Rectenna arrays, with series and parallel interconnections, have been developed and measured. Output DC voltages and powers have been doubled and quadrupled using two andfour rectenna elements, respectively.

Simulation de la propagation d'ondes électromagnétiques en nano-optique par une méthode Galerkine discontinue d'ordre élevé / Simulation of electromagnetic waves propagation in nano-optics with a high-order discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method

Viquerat, Jonathan 10 December 2015 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to develop a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method to be able to handle realistic nanophotonics computations. During the last decades, the evolution of lithography techniques allowed the creation of geometrical structures at the nanometer scale, thus unveiling a variety of new phenomena arising from light-matter interactions at such levels. These effects usually occur when the device is of comparable size or (much) smaller than the wavelength of the incident field. This work relies on the development and implementation of appropriate models for dispersive materials (mostly metals), as well as on a large panel of classical computational techniques. Two major methodological developments are presented and studied in details: (i) curvilinear elements, and (ii) local order of approximation. This work is complemented with several physical studies of real-life nanophotonics applications.

[en] Plasma is one of the four fundamental states of matter, present on Earth in natural form at the ionosphere, in lightning strikes and in the flames resulting from combustion, as well as in artificial form in neon signs, fluorescent light bulbs and industrial processes. Plasma behaviour is extraordinarily complex and varied, e.g. the spontaneous formation of interesting spatial features over a wide range of length scales. A plasma antenna, on the other hand, is a radiating structure based in a plasma element instead of a metallic conductor, which creates several technological advantages and useful characteristics. In this present work, an investigation of electromagnetic propagation inside of plasma structures is performed through both theoretical and numerical means as a first step towards constructing appropriate models for the study of plasma antennas.

Probing plasmonic nanostructures

Werra, Julia Franziska Maria 01 December 2016 (has links)
Electric and magnetic emitters can be used to probe different plasmonic nanostructures. By determining the modification of the radiation dynamics and the lifetimes, we can measure the photonic local density of states. This, being a property of the enviroment, does not only allow us to draw conclusions regarding the electronic and other physical properties of the latter but also regarding the general light-matter coupling properties of the plasmonic nanostructure. A strong light-matter coupling is important for future applications in quantum technology. If emitters couple specifically to plasmonic nanostructure, the latter do not only focus the emitted light at the sub-wavelength scale at the surface of the structure but also allow for such a strong light-matter coupling due to the field enhancement at the surface. In this work, we focus on two different basic plasmonic systems: first, we study analytically the influence of graphene on electric and magnetic emitters, and second we discuss lifetime modifications and radiation dynamics close to silver and gold nanostructures. In the first part of this work, we specifically focus on the influence of graphene exhibiting a finite band gap on the emitter. In the second part, we model the propagation of electromagnetic fields in three-dimensional space making use of the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method with extended functionalities. This framework we apply to model the first three-dimensional scanning-probe fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy by use of a single quantum-emitter as well as for a self-consistent description of emitters in the proximity of a gold pentamer. The combination of these studies stress that the strength of emitters lies in the detection of electronic, optical and magnetic properties.

Nonlocal and Nonlinear Properties of Plasmonic Nanostructures Within the Hydrodynamic Drude Model

Moeferdt, Matthias 03 August 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with the nonlocal and nonlinear properties of plasmonic nanoparticles, as described by the hydrodynamic model. The hydrodynamic material model represents an extension of the Drude model that contains corrections to the descriptions of the electron plasma. After a thorough derivation of the material model, analytical discussions of nonlocality are presented for the example of a single cylinder. The frequency shifts in the scattering and absorption spectra are quantified and treated asymptotically. Furthermore, by applying a conformal map, the problem of a cylindrical dimer is solved in the electrostatic limit and the modes of the structure are determined. These investigations lay the foundations for numerical investigations which are performed employing the discontinuous Galerkin time domain method. The analytical knowledge of the modes, in conjunction with group theoretical considerations and numerical analysis, enables the formulation of rigorous selection rules for the excitation of modes by linear and nonlinear processes. In further numerical studies, the influence of nonlocality on the field enhancement in dimer structures and double-resonant behavior (a resonance is found at the frequency of the incoming light and at the second harmonic) are investigated.

Gerelli, Emmanuel 13 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis aims at improving the efficiency of conventional optical tweezers (cOT). They allow to manipulate objects with dimension from a few tens of nanometer to a few tens of micrometers with a high accuracy and without contact. This has numerous applications in biophysics and colloidal science. This thesis investigates a new approach for optical nanotweezers. It uses a photonic crystal (PC) cavity which generates a slow Bloch mode. This cavity can be effectively and easily excited with a Gaussian beam at the normal incidence. Contrarily to cOT, objective with a small numerical aperture can be used. The expected performances in terms of trapping go well beyond the diffraction limit of cOT. This work demonstrates experimentally the efficacy of approach. This thesis is divided in two main sections. First, we had to set up an experimental bench to carry out to our study. We built the optical bench interface instruments and develop programs to analyze the data. Two essential elements have been considered: - The development of the optical system allowing the excitation of the photonics nanostructure. - The design an imaging system to track nanoparticles. Second, we have focus on the demonstration of the optical trapping. We started by with a low Q factor (few hundred) cavity. Trapping efficiency of an order of magnitude higher than cOT has been demonstrated. Then, we have explored a new king of PC cavity based on double period structure. We show that thanks to this approach high Q factor of several thousand are easily reached. With this structure, we managed to trap 250nm polystyrene beads, with an optical power of the order of a milliwatt. A deep analysis of the nanoparticle trajectories allowed us to find a slow Bloch mode signature.

Γουζούασης, Ιωάννης 20 October 2010 (has links)
The application of hyperthermia process has been widely used in clinical research and efforts are being made for its implementation in clinical practice, as many researchers have used this method as an adjunct treatment procedure for cancer. During the past two decades, a great deal of research has been carried out, with the aim of developing effective techniques for hyperthermia treatment, primarily using RF, microwave and ultrasound energy. A similar effort is carried out in the Laboratory of Microwaves and Fiber Optics (MFOL), School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), where a proposed hyperthermia system has been designed and constructed. A system for deep brain hyperthermia treatment, designed to also provide passive measurements of temperature and/or conductivity variations inside the human body, is presented in the present PhD thesis. The proposed system comprises both therapeutic and diagnostic modules, operating in a totally contactless way, based on the use of an ellipsoidal beamformer to achieve focusing on the areas under treatment and monitoring. The radiometry monitoring module, the Three Dimensional Passive Microwave Radiometry Imaging System (MiRaIS), has been studied, designed and constructed in the framework of a previous PhD thesis in the same laboratory of MFOL. In the present thesis, the proposed system is theoretically and experimentally studied. The operation principal is based on the use of an ellipsoidal conductive wall cavity for focusing the emitted radiation on the tissues that should accept treatment. The ellipsoidal cavity, which was constructed and used in the experimentation procedure, is newly developed and improves the system’s ergonomics retaining at the same time the focusing properties of the prototype system. In the framework of the present work, theoretical modeling and experimentation of the proposed system is carried out in order to examine and improve its focusing attributes. In the theoretical study, three setups are investigated for the improvement of the system’s focusing properties (e.g. penetration depth of the electromagnetic field, spatial sensitivity) using dielectric materials. The research is carried out with the use of a commercially available software tool, XFdtd (Remcom Inc.). The materials are placed inside the ellipsoidal or used as matching layers around the head model for the achievement of a stepped change of the refraction index on the air-human head model interface. The results revealed the possible advantages of using matching dielectric materials, as improvement on the focusing properties of the system is clearly observed, depending on the setup used, the position of the head model inside the system and the operating frequency. The experiments were performed inside an anechoic chamber providing maximum accuracy by avoiding all possible EMC/EMI issues. Along with the hyperthermia experiments, the implementation of the microwave radiometry process was also tested with the proposed system. Microwave radiometry could provide the temperature monitoring of the radiated area during the hyperthermia sessions. In the experimental procedures water phantoms were used, which during hyperthermia indicated the energy absorbing areas at the irradiation frequency, while during microwave radiometry revealed the system’s temperature sensitivity. Also, measurements were conducted using dielectric matching layers, placed around the medium of interest, in order to fully understand the effect of those materials on the system’s focusing properties as well as to confirm the respective theoretical results. Taking into consideration the present study and the advantage of the non invasive character of the proposed brain hyperthermia system, it is concluded that further research is required in order to explore its potentials at becoming a part of the standard treatment protocol of brain malignancy in the future.
