Corridors urbains et Transit Oriented Development : Enseignements d’une modélisation intégrée des transports et de l’usage du sol appliquée à la métropole lilloise / Urban Corridors and Transit Oriented Development : Lessons from an integrated land use and transport model applied to the Lille Metropolitan Area

Liu, Liu 10 November 2016 (has links)
Human mobility depends not only on the supply of transport services, but more indirectly, on the organization of our living space. Our residential and working location, as well as our travelling mode and itinerary choices are based on our monetary and time budgets, besides, personal preferences. Therefore, the organization of our living space has wide implications on the space and energy consumption. Can we design this space in 2040 in a more sustainable way? To achieve a new balance, we propose to apply the theoretical urban concept of Transit-Oriented-Development and the model of Urban Corridor to Lille metropolitan area. We aim at concentrating activities of all kinds along the existing mass transit axis, thus, revitalizing the city within its public transport (PT) corridors so as to promote dense, diverse and designed neighborhoods. By limiting constructions outside PT corridor, we control urban sprawl and encourage short-distanced and less time-consuming travelling patterns. To test this scenario, we set up a land use and transport integrated model including main economic activities, real estate market in addition to the complete transport network. Three visions of redevelopment strategy are tested in order to measure their long-term consequences related to different actions, such as the territorial morphology, the location choices of household and firms, the travel behavior for various activities and associated environmental impacts. By providing a reference for the spatial organization and for the transport services planning, the results stemming from this prospective analysis may also enhance our global understanding of the city - how this complex system works.

Assessment of the structuring axis of the urban transformation strategy in São Paulo, Brazil, according to the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) theory. Case study: the influence area of the Belém metro station.

Quentin Lamour 09 April 2018 (has links)
In order to meet the challenges of urban sprawl and growing car use, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) combines land use and public transport policies. This strategy of urban development promotes dense and qualified neighbourhoods near public transport facilities, and is based on the following principles: density, land-use diversity, social diversity, accessibility, active mobility and thriving public open spaces. This study aims to develop and apply a method to assess the São Paulo TOD policy, implemented by means of instruments and urban parameters defined in the urban legislation - Master Plan (2014), Zoning (2016) and Building Standard (2017) -, in the Structuring Axis of the Urban Transformation. The TOD principles serve as reference to the assessment of the urban legislation of São Paulo, which is based on urban, social and financial criteria. The method is separated in two parts. The main part analyses the rules and incentives, which are defined in law and regulate the development of private spaces. The method aims to appreciate the influence of the urban legislation on the feasibility of real estate projects, relating the legislation to the morphology of the produced housing units and to the income of the households composing their target market. It proposes an analysis based on neighbourhood-scale urban development scenarios. The secondary part assesses the capacity of public open spaces to foster active transport modes. It is based on an analysis of the repartition of the public open spaces, according to the transport mode, and on observations of the walkability conditions and of the behaviour of pedestrians. The method was applied in the influence area of the Belém metro station, on Line 3 Red, in the East Zone of São Paulo. A mapping of the blocks, lots, land uses and of the number of car spaces per lot was performed. The lots presenting the characteristics to be developed were identified and mapped. Five development scenarios of the Belém area were formulated, analysed and compared. The analysis of the scenarios showed the lack of clarity, the inconsistencies and the contradictions of the legislation and revealed the recently adopted legislation is undermined by the alterations adopted in 2016 and 2017, regarding the TOD principles of density and social diversity. Moreover, the scenarios analysis exhibited more social diversity when Special Zones of Social Interest (SZSI) and Urban Structuration Zones (USZ) are integrated, near transport facilities. A policy combining Inclusionary Housing in the USZ and investment, in the SZSI, of the funds collected through air right fees in the USZ, showed the best social diversity results. This study pointed out the necessity of a proactive policy on mixed uses and commercial ground-floor facades that aims to adequate the built environment, to accommodate commercial activities and promote dynamic public spaces, which could stimulate active mobility. Since it merely encourage mixed uses and commercial ground-floor facades, the policy presently in effect does not set the conditions to produce walkable streets, principally in streets presenting high commercial potential. In this context, the study proposes guidelines as a base to implement an ambitious policy on public spaces to promote active transportation near public transport. Safety, security and comfort of pedestrians must be the priority, as a condition for thriving and attractive streets and good living conditions in dense urban centres.

The experience with film seminars for students has shown that these mostly do not dispose of enough foreknowledge for film analyses and they also lack the technical terms of the cinematic means. Since the length of films blows up each university time slot pattern, and therefore the seminars are conducted as block events, the students get an introduction from scratch in an orientation session as basic knowledge and tools for their own film analysis. This basic knowledge of \"film language and film analysis in the media education\" has been optimized again and again in the last twenty years and is used in the present version at the TU Dresden and the University of Duisburg/Essen.

Ghosts before breakfast for chamber ensemble and electronics and a history of the electronic music studios of the University of Iowa (1964-2017)

Wilson, Jonathan James 15 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of the composition Ghosts Before Breakfast for chamber ensemble and fixed electronics. In this work I was interested in the creation of unity in the horizontal, vertical, and structural dimensions of a composition between the ensemble and the electronics and using electronic music techniques to gradually unify the ensemble and tape parts. Part 2 consists of an investigation into the development of the Electronic Music Studios of the University of Iowa when James Cessna from the Department of Physics and Astronomy came up with a Master’s Thesis project to design an Arbitrary Waveform Generator. An initial discussion with James Van Allen, James Cessna, Himie Voxman, and Philip Bezanson in 1964 led to the initiation of the program with the loan of equipment from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Collins Radio Company, and homemade devices. The outcome of this interdisciplinary project between the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Music led to a transformation of the Composition Program, and the studios evolved into a nationally recognized center for the study of electronic music. Its legacy lives on through its students who have reaped the benefits of the program and made successful careers throughout the country from the development of studios at other colleges and universities to work for film industries in Hollywood and New York. A history of the Electronic Music Studios shall be discussed, through the professors who have directed this program, its facilities, its assistants who maintained the facilities, its students, its guests, and its performances.
