Configurações do vazio: arquitetura e não-lugar / Configurations of the void: architecture and no-place

Pratschke, Anja 18 September 1996 (has links)
We are living today a moment that favours the rediscussion of some concepts concerning several domains of knowledge, ranging from art to biology, from philosophy to mathematics, to architecture. Amidst these questions, this work chooses that of the void´s role as its central one, which will be treated in two instances: as an urban configuration, and as a conceptual contemporary architectural element. Selecting architectural projects, in which one of the basic criteria is the void´s problematic, this work wants to make clear the relationship in a form of interdependence and mutual enrichment between voids, either ebing a result of an urbain metropolitain dynamic, or those architecturaly conceived. Throughout five projects, signed by five contemporary architects within four metropolises, we try to show the specific role of each void. Furthermore, the first part will approach the questions of memory and temporality at São Paulo. The second part treats the end of the unique history as defined by Hegel, in Berlin. Finaly the third part, concerning the cities of Osaka and Tokyo aimes the discussion on the japanese conception of void, related to the notion of ephemerality in the metropolis, and presents the japanese concept of superposition of time and space. This work is presented as an interrupted narrative, as a result of the author´s own journey and connected by an unvisible frame, which is eventually the void itself. It tries to understand the elements specific to architetcure and urbanism, related to literature, philosophy and art. At the same time, it aims sketching representations of the selvage situation of contemporary metropolises through emblematic architectural projects.

A meta-narrative review of Olympic education and its implications for realist evaluation of programmes for Tokyo 2020

Hwang, Bo-Ra January 2018 (has links)
This thesis has sought to examine the conceptualisation(s) of the field of Olympic education identified in the English language literature, and to evaluate the planning of Olympic education in practice, specifically in relation to the preparation of Olympic education programmes and systems for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. When Pierre de Coubertin introduced the modern Olympic Games, one of the ideas for the revival of the Games was to educate young people through sport. Despite Coubertin s educational philosophy, the Olympic Games have long failed to represent ideals of fair play, equal opportunity, and international harmony but being replaced by bribery, corruption, commercialism, drug use and gender discrimination instead. The IOC has strengthened the roles and mission of the Olympic bodies in particular relation to the promotion of Olympic values and Olympism through the implementation of Olympic education. As a policy aim for the Olympic Movement, the development of Olympic education programmes has become a key goal for the IOC and thus host cities/nations. Providing a concept of Olympic and Paralympic education programmes in preparation for staging the Olympic Games is a compulsory requirement for host cities and nations. However, in spite of the IOC s recent explicit and intended commitment to the development of Olympic education policies in practice, explanation of Olympic education as a concept and a set of practices is imprecise and relatively underdeveloped in the Olympic related area. In addition, there is a lack of understanding of how universal values and concepts of Olympic education are perceived and communicated in culturally diverse contexts. The thesis is divided into two related parts, which seeks to provide two fundamental contributions to knowledge in this field. Part One is focused on a meta-narrative review of the English language literature on Olympic education. The methodology of a meta-narrative review is an extension of the systematic review process and facilitates the identification of the contribution of research traditions to the phenomena under review, in this case the conceptualisation and operationalisation of Olympic education. Through the process of meta-narrative review, six research traditions were identified: educational philosophy; critical sociology; curriculum development; education psychology; development of evaluation measures; and policy analysis and evaluation. II The results of the review identified how Olympic education has been conceptualised with various unfolding storylines in different research traditions, and this analysis subsequently provided the basis for the second key element of the study in the form of templates against which to evaluate the Olympic education programmes and systems associated with Tokyo 2020. Part Two employs a case study approach and is focused on the analysis of six cases using a realist evaluation methodology, employing analytic logic models and analysis of Context-Mechanism-Outcome (CMO) configurations. This facilitates the development of explicit and/or implicit causal claims about changes brought about by Japanese Olympic education programmes. The research has also contributed to developing a critical review of Olympic education programmes in a culturally specific, non-western context. Provision of Olympic education, within the context of national legislation requiring its introduction into the school curriculum developed by various stakeholders, represents a unique and culturally specific context for its study. Not only its education system, but also the cultural and historical values embedded within Japanese Olympic education programmes derive from the Japanese understanding of Olympism and universal Olympic values based on the Japanese values such as harmony, in particular applied in the effort in the recovery from national disasters, moral values learned from Judo and physical education, and Japanese ways of expressing hospitality. Thus, this case study of Tokyo 2020 acts as an exemplar in the diffusing of ways of developing and delivering the benefits of Olympic education programmes in culturally specific context.

Encontros e desencontros na paisagem cenográfica de Tóquio / Lost in translation inside Tokyo scenery landscape

Sugai, Mari 02 July 2010 (has links)
This dissertation aims to analyze the audiovisual work Lost in translation, directed by American film maker Sofia Coppola, shot integrally in Japan (in Tokyo and Kyoto), and commercially released in 2003. The analysis intends to relate the fictional representation of the city depicted by a foreign director, the images of Tokyos urban spaces (resulted from measures of Westernization and modernization practiced in the country, since Meiji era) shown through the film and its narrative. The images of the Japanese capital created by the film maker wander through the contrast between modern and traditional offered by Japanese culture, besides presenting situations and post card sites visited by tourists and others frequented by natives. Unlike other films, the sequences of frames of the analyzed movie, which shows the streets, avenues, architectural constructions and interiors spaces exert an active role in the film narrative.

Superstores Marknadsföringsstrategier / Marketing Strategies of Superstores

Johansson, Martin, Landberg, Daniel January 2003 (has links)

By such a comparison we also intend to describe possible variations and reasons behind the differences if such should be evident. We have interviewed two Japanese companies with superstores in Tokyo and one Swedish company with a superstore located in Stockholm. The findings were then analyzed and the results compared in order to illuminate the contextual factors the marketing strategies of superstores correlates with.

Findings: The major differences between marketing of superstores in the chosen contexts are due to many factors but mainly the mobility of the population and all that comes with that, for example traffic conditions and infrastructure. Fractured atmospheres: an exploration into the exactness of the world

Yakiwchuk, Amanda 25 September 2008 (has links)
This project examines the spatial relationships that exist between Winnipeg, Canada and Tokyo, Japan, with the intent to develop an understanding of the preciseness of the world. Different site-specific systemic conditions were used as critical tools to explore the implication of distinct design catalysts and inhibitors. I have concentrated on the relationships that exist between time and space, to identify and displace localized, momentary events that exist in one site to the other. Familiarities of my local surroundings were deliberately obscured to make explicit a heightened awareness of my position on the planet. This helps to facilitate discussions. I have created a space that is dissembled through abstract understandings of displaced elements in the environment. It is my intention for this space to be experienced in a different way each time we come across it, by shifting and changing ones perception of their character in the world. / October 2008
