This study was undertaken to present the aerial differentiation within Brant Township. To express these differences most clearly the Township has been studied on a regional basis. This includes a breakdown of the study area into small subdivisions and the relationships of the unit areas to each other to discover the structural and functional basis of the larger area.
It must be remembered that regional geography is sterile without the concepts and principles from systematic geography. Therefore systematic geography has been employed for an understanding of the aerial differences in each kind of phenomena and the relationships between them. Throughout the study, emphasis has been placed on the basic land utilization pattern of the Township.
The land utilization maps are the result of systematic observation on a field to field basis. The functional map of Walkerton in the back cover illustrates the land use contained within the town. This map also constitutes the results of field work.
The study is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction to the location, size and the physical geography are discussed. Chapter three is a detailed account of the historical development of the Township. The present day agriculture is dealt within Chapter four while non-agricultural land use, which includes on urban study, is discussed in chapter five. Après plusieurs décennies de désertification, certaines campagnes bénéficient aujourd’hui d’un réinvestissement croissant par des populations urbaines. Aussi, la restructuration des sociétés rurales interroge. Le paysage social change, transformant ainsi le rural en un monde social avant tout. Le village fait-il encore sens pour ses habitants ? La thématique de ce travail s’intéresse alors à l’évolution et à la transformation relationnelle de l’espace rural français, avec un intérêt tout particulier pour les communes de moins de 500 habitants et leur identité communale singulière. Le village de Gigouzac dans le Lot, 239 habitants, est mon terrain d’étude depuis plus de 10 ans. Ce choix n’est pas sans raisons et sans conséquences puisque j’habite mon terrain et mon objet d’étude, familialement, personnellement, et scientifiquement.La propriété essentielle de cette recherche est son caractère longitudinal, impliquant une mise à distance et une observation constante et participante. Ces différentes postures « du dedans » mêlent la sociologie et l’audiovisuel à une approche psychosociale. Le concept d’identité doit être défini en le signifiant. Cette thèse tente de saisir l’identité communale. Afin d’observer les effets que peut avoir l’arrivée de nouveaux habitants de culture urbaine sur cette identité, j’ai choisi de la considérer du point de vue de la psychologie sociale et de la dynamique de ses représentations. Les différentes méthodes de recueil de données employées, tour à tour quantitatives, comparatives, qualitatives, et audiovisuelles, montrent les permanences et les dynamiques de la ruralité. Le village évolue, se modernise, se réinvente, mais reste un territoire pertinent et cohérent, une réponse à l’individualisme grandissant de la société moderne. / After several decades of desertification, some countryside areas benefit today from an increasing reinvestment by urban populations. The restructuration of rural societies is also questioning. The social landscape is changing, turning above all the rural into a social world. Does the village make still sense for its inhabitants ? The field of this research deals with evolution and the relational transformation of the French rural space, with a special emphasis on townships (in the north-american sense) of less than 500 inhabitants and their singular identity. The village of Gigouzac (Lot), of 239 inhabitants, is my fieldwork since more than 10 years. This choice is not without reasons and without consequences, as I live my fieldwork and my research topic, personally, with my family, and scientifically.The essential property of this research lies in its longitudinal character, implying a distance to take as well as constant and participating observation. These various « in situ » postures are combining sociology and audiovisual techniques with a psychosocial approach. The concept of identity have to be defined by its meaning. This Ph-D thesis is trying to understand the township identity. In order to observe the effects the new inhabitants of urban culture could have on the township identity, I choiced to consider it under an angle of social psychology and its representation dynamics. The different methods used in the data collection, being quantitative, comparative, qualitative and audiovisual, show the permanencies and the dynamics of the rurality. The village is evolving, is modernizing, is reinventing itself, but it remains a pertinent and a coherent territory, a reply to the increasing individualism of the modern society.

M.Ed. / The central theme of this study is the development of guidelines to create more effective classroom management in "township" schools. In the research the focus is based on the factors which influence classroom management and what the learning facilitators would do for the improvement thereof. The investigator's involvement with classroom management and the run-up to this research will be enunciated in the following two paragraphs. The researcher is employed in the Department of Educational Management and Educational Studies of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the Technikon Northern Gauteng. The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences has at task the training of learning facilitators that are principally accommodated in "township" schools after completion of their studies. With effect from 1996 a four year B.Tech (Education) degree course with Educational Management as a major subject is implemented at.the above-mentioned Faculty. Classroom management is a component in the instructional programmes of Educational Management and of which the researcher is co-responsible for the instructional presentation thereof. Indicators that are symptomatic of the undesired discipline in the schools have been observed during teaching practice. The indicators are among others a lack of punctuality and a high percentage of daily absenteeism. On the ground of the preceding discussion and prompted by regular reporting on the unacceptable functioning of some schools, as well as the poor annual school-leaving results, the aim of this study is to: -qualitatively determine what the present standing of classroom management in "township" schools is; and -lay down guidelines to establish effective classroom management in "township" schools. The findings of this study indicates that: various and diverse factors contribute to unproductive classroom management; classroom management is not separate (independent) actions, but is intertwined with the interests and needs of the school, parents, learners and a dynamic society. On the ground of the research results the investigator is of the opinion that short, as well as long-term solutions should be put into operation in making classroom management more productive.

Space, place and identity: political violence in Mpumalanga township, Kwazulu-Natal, 1987-1993Bonnin, Deborah Rosemary 15 May 2008 (has links)
ABSTRACT
This thesis investigates political violence between the United Democratic Front
and Inkatha in Mpumalanga township, Natal. In the early 1980s and early 1990s
Mpumalanga was one of Natal’s townships most gravely affected by political
violence.
I ask and answer four questions:
1. Why and how did the conflict between political organisations in Natal
become violent?
2. What forms did the violence take?
3. Why, as a result of the violence did ordinary people with little prior history
of political activity come to identify with either the UDF or Inkatha?
4. How were these political identities produced?
In order to answer these questions the thesis explores three primary arguments.
The first argument is that 1987 represents a severe rupture in the politics of Natal.
This rupture is captured in the violent form of political conflict that gripped the
province. To understand this rupture the thesis looks back at a complex set of
processes that interlocked over space and time.
A second major argument of the thesis is that an aspect of the distinctiveness of
the violence was its profoundly spatialised form in combination with gendered
and generational forms. There were two major shifts in the spatialised form of the
violence. The first shift occurred when instead of only attacking individuals, the
household and its members also became targets. And then the second shift was
when the purpose of the violence was about the pursuit of territory. Boundaries
between territories identified who was ‘in’ and who was ‘out’ and all aspects of
everyday life became politicised.
The third major argument of the thesis is that there was a strong relationship
between space/place and political identity. The re-territorialisation of space

during the violence was central to the production of these new identities. Political
violence created new spatialities, with space itself acquiring political meaning and
identity. The political meanings of these spaces were intense markers of their
identity and overrode all other meanings and identities. As the spatial form of the
violence shifted it forced people to question their political identities. The lived
experience of the politicisation of everyday life by the violence shaped the
production of political identities.

Awareness and utilisation of small enterprise support programmes by unemployed youth : the case of Mankweng Township, Limpopo ProvinceRamohale, Rabothata Lordwik January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / This report focused on investigating the awareness and utilisation of government programme for development and support of SMMEs. The study acknowledges the fact that youth participation in entrepreneurial activities can reduce the high number of unemployment in the country and can contribute in the economy of especially rural areas. This was a qualitative study conducted in Mankweng area in Limpopo and the focus group was the youth who have post-matric qualifications.
The sample consisted of fifteen graduates, of ages 25 to 35, who were not working and actively looking for employment. Male participants in the study formed 33 per cent, while the female participants were at 67 per cent. The main findings were that only a few of the participants were aware of the available government support programmes. Of those that were aware, many were unsure about how to access these programmes while others did not even think about starting their own businesses. The study recommends that these programmes ought to be accessible to the local government and should form part of the developmental programme of municipalities to ensure greater awareness and utilisation; and that youth need to be encouraged to start thinking more about starting their own businesses as an alternative to formal employment

Tenant’s choice of residential property location in Mankweng Township, Polokwane Local MunicipalityAlabi, Ijeoma Uchenna January 2013 (has links)
Thesis (M. Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2013 / The aim of the study was to carry out an analysis of the factors influencing tenants’ choice of residential property location in Mankweng Township. The study used both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The structured questionnaire, interview and documented literature were used to collect data. The data were analysed using the SPSS statistical package and the Excel spread sheet. To this end, specific working objectives were formulated as follows: to identify the types of residential property in the study area, to determine the factors which influence the choice of residential property location in the study area and lastly, to compare the relationships that exist among the residents in Mankweng Township.
The results of the research showed that among all the factors marital status, age, household’s size, race, education and income were not among the factors influencing the choice of residential location in Mankweng Township. However, gender, employment status, distance from city centre, hospital, place of worship, security or police station, water and electricity significantly influenced the choice of residential location choice in Mankweng Township. The study therefore recommends government to be more responsive and active in the provision of urban infrastructure and services in every neighbourhood. This will help address the major reason why tenants search for accommodation from one location to another. In addition, real estate investors should consider the availability of infrastructure before choosing a location for community development. Thus, when urban facilities and services are evenly distributed, this may enhance proper development in the community

Education in South Africa faces many challenges; among them is the betterment of teaching and learning in order to improve the performance in schools, particularly in township schools where the results of learners are still not up to the required standard. For schools to function effectively, the School Management Teams (Principal, Deputy Principal, HODs), need to understand the importance of the effective management of human resources. The proper and effective management of people cannot be neglected if the schools as organisations want to attain their goals. School Management Teams as managers of schools are accountable for the effective running of the schools and the task of proper management of human resources rest on their shoulders. In this study an investigation into human recource management in selected township schools in the Gert Sibande Region (Mpumalanga Province) was done. Central to the study is the School Management Team's (SMTs) understanding of the concepts management and leadership, human resource management and related aspects. An investigation was also done regarding the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to improve education in township schools.
