Evaluating Protective Behavior Strategy Intentions Using the Theory of Planned Behavior

Sanchez, Dakota 01 January 2019 (has links)
OBJECTIVE: Amongst college students there exists a concerning trend towards problem drinking owed to the cultures on campus that support problem drinking habits. Several interventions are currently used to encourage students to drink wisely with the goal of decreasing this problem drinking and the consequences of these behaviors. The current study analyzes the intention to use Protective Behavior Strategies through the model suggested in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). METHOD: College student participants (N = 171) completed a web-based survey examining alcohol-related behaviors, intentions, and perceptions at the time of the survey and over the next four weeks. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: At step 1, PBS intentions was regressed onto age and gender. This accounted for a small amount of variance in intentions. Next, the TPB predictors were added to the model which resulted in a significant improvement in the overall model fit. In the final model, perceived control over PBS use and peer PBS use norms were significant positive predictors of PBS use intentions. Attitudes toward PBS did not predict PBS use intentions.

Orsaker till låg följsamhet till handhygienföreskrifter : En litteraturöversikt

Zotova, Tanja, Ljungberg, Nina January 2009 (has links)
<p>Background: Hand hygiene is the simplest and most fundamental means to prevent care related infections. It is of great importance that the guideline of hand hygiene is followed for the patient’s sake. Unfortunately, healthcare workers perform hand hygiene too seldom. If the patient comes down with a care related infection, the suffering will increase. The nurse's role is therefore to prevent unnecessary suffering for the patient by following recommendations for hand hygiene. In order to get a broader understanding of the reasons why the compliance of hand hygiene is so low the theory of planned behaviour was used (TPB). This theory explains the human behavior. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe causes of not following recommendations for hand hygiene among health care workers. Method: This literature review was based on quantitative and qualitative scientific articles. Results: The findings indicated that there were several factors that influence the low compliance of hand hygiene recommendations. These were summarized as: workload and lack of time, skin irritation, attitudes and motivation, insufficient access to hand hygiene products, inappropriate glove use, lack of knowledge and unawareness.</p>

Determining sustainable waste management practices in college and university dining services using the theory of planned behavior

Zhou, Ying January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics / Elizabeth B. Barrett / Along with increasing environmental challenges and large quantities of energy demand, many have become concerned about the environment and have implemented “Going Green” strategies. As a result, plans for sustainable development are being adopted by governments, institutions, operations, and individual households. Many National Association of College & University Food Service (NACUFS) members may have heard about sustainability, but they may not apply their knowledge to developing practical outcomes and solutions. Very little research has been published that measures how NACUFS members are responding to Sustainable Waste Management (SWM) and to the new Sustainability Guide published by the NACUFS organization in September 2009. The primary purposes of this study were to ascertain what SWM programs have been implemented in college and university foodservices operations and determine how NACUFS members’ attitudes, subjective norms, and barriers affect the implementation of additional SWM programs based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). A secondary purpose was to identify the differences in intention to implement sustainable waste management programs based on characteristics of the respondents’ age, size of facility, region of the country and if the facility had a sustainable waste management committee. In this study, 2,184 NACUFS members whose e-mail addresses were listed in the NACUFS membership directory were selected as subjects. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 17.0. Multiple linear regression analysis, T-tests, and ANOVA were used to test the hypotheses and research questions. Statistical significance was set at p≤0.05. The total number of responses was 212 resulting in a 13.5% response rate. The majority of respondents had implemented SWM programs that don’t require major resources. NACUFS members had positive attitudes about implementing a SWM program and their superiors, university administrators, and students’ opinions were important others to consider when implementing a SWM program. Whether a college and university foodservice has a sustainability committee was the only demographic that significantly influenced NACUFS members’ intentions to implement a SWM program. Overall, attitude and subjective norms were the only significant predictors of intention to implement a SWM program (p≤.05). Therefore, if NACFUS members have a positive attitude about sustainability, important others around them who agree and there is a sustainability committee within the operation, they are more likely to implement a SWM program. Keywords: Sustainable waste management, TPB, college and university foodservice

Beyond the Early Adopters: Examining the potential for car-sharing in Richmond, Virginia

Spears, Steven P. 01 January 2008 (has links)
Car-sharing is a membership-based mobility service that offers short-term vehicle rentals. Studies have shown that car-sharing can increase transportation sustainability by encouraging the use of public transit and reducing vehicle miles traveled. This thesis examines the potential for car-sharing in Richmond, Virginia through an attitude-based qualitative pilot study. Using the theory of planned behavior as a framework, urban and suburban residents were asked questions that measured car-sharing intention strength, mode choice habit, and life change effects. The study found that even among those with positive attitudes toward car-sharing, existing habits, lack of adequate commuting alternatives and the needs of non-driving dependents were major hindrances to shared-car use. Better facilities and interventions designed to encourage the use of transit, walking, and bicycling may play an important role in overcoming these obstacles and increasing the viability of car-sharing in Greater Richmond.

The Impact of Use Situation on the Acceptance of Mobile Value-added Services

Ling, Yu-Ling 31 July 2007 (has links)
As the growth of the E-commerce and mobile technology, value-added services have attracted a substantial amount of attention in mobile applications. Many reports indicate that those mobile value-added services will be the next generation of Internet access and a potential profit maker in the future. However, the actual use of mobile value-added services is not as good as our expectation and the available services as well as user¡¦s intention to use them are not very high. The objective of this research is to explore how contextual factors and different types of value-added services may affect the user¡¦s intention to use. The theory underlying the study is the TPB model. An empirical study was conducted to examine the factors that affect the intention of adopting mobile services. The results show that (1) For all kind of services, a better task-technology fit resulted in a more positive attitude towards using the value-added services; (2). For all kind of services, user attitude on mobile value-added services was positively related to the user¡¦s willingness to use; (3) For communication, entertainment, and information services, perceive behavior control had a positive effect on user¡¦s willingness to use; (4) Social norms affected the willingness to use only when the nature of services is mobile entertainment or business transaction; (5) Contextual variables such as time pressure and location had mediate effects between attitudes and willingness to use.

Behandlingspedagogiska reaktioner : En granskning av programmet pedagogik med inriktning ungdoms- och missbruksvårds inverkan på studentens beteende gentemot personer med missbruksproblematik / Pedagogic counselling and treatment professionals reactions : A review of the program pedagogy focusing youth and addiction care and it’s impact on students' behavior towards people with substance abuse problems

von Schantz, Olof, Nilausen, Daniel January 2013 (has links)

Environmental attitudes and how they affect purchase intentions of environmentally friendly automobiles : An emperical study on Chinese students at Jönköping University

Henning, Olof, Karlsson, Samuel January 2011 (has links)
Consumers today are becoming more aware of how their behavior and use of resources affect the environment. It is becoming increasingly important for companies to understand consumer’s attitudes in order to predict their behavior. Extensive research has been conducted on the attitude-behavioral relationship in various fields of study. However, no research has been made on the attitude towards environmentally friendly automobiles and how it affects purchase intentions. Our research has been made in collaboration with Volvo Car Corporation, which in 2010 was acquired by Geely Automobile. The acquisition meant that an opportunity presented itself on the Chinese market, which today is the largest automobile market in the world. The thesis will focus on young Chinese consumer’s attitude toward the environment and how this may affect their purchase intentions towards environmentally friendly automobiles. The basis for our reasoning is that the factors environmental values, environmental knowledge and responsibility feelings make up an individual’s environmental attitude. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how environmental values, environmental knowledge and responsibility feelings affect purchase intentions towards environmentally friendly automobiles among young Chinese consumers. We have used a quantitative approach in our collection of empirical data. With the help of a web-based self-completions survey we managed to send out the questionnaire to all Chinese students studying at Jönköping University and received a high response rate of 65%. We based the design of the survey on a model from Kaiser, Ranney, Hartig and Bowler (1999). The major findings from our research conclude that the used model does not substantially explain purchase intentions of environmentally friendly automobiles. Our research suggests that the factors environmental knowledge and responsibility feelings are not significant when predicting intentions to purchase environmentally friendly automobiles. However, the factor environmental values proved to be strongly correlated when predicting intentions to purchase environmentally friendly automobiles.
