Pilot Testing a Music Appreciation Training Program for Cochlear Implant Recipients and Users of Hearing Aids

A clinically-focused music appreciation training program (MATP) was developed for use by recipients of cochlear implants (CI) and wearers of hearing aids (HA). It aimed to enhance listeners’ music appreciation abilities, with a specific focus on timbre and musical style. The MATP was pilot-tested on 17 adult postlingually deafened CI recipients (8 female, 9 male, mean age = 60.2 years) and 13 adult HA users (7 female, 4 male, mean age = 63.9 years), with each device group divided into a control and a training group. The training groups were asked to use the MATP for 30 minutes per day four times a week for 10 weeks. The control groups were asked to continue with their normal listening habits for the same time period. Both the training and control groups were assessed on tests of instrument, ensemble and style identification as well as pleasantness ratings of musical excerpts, before and after the 10-week period. Participants in the training groups also completed a program evaluation questionnaire at the end of the training period. The results showed that the training program significantly improved the quality ratings of CI recipients for ensemble stimuli (p = .034). There were, however, no significant improvements for CI users on the timbre discrimination tasks or quality ratings for single instruments, nor were there any significant improvements for the HA users on any of the discrimination tasks or in their quality ratings. The findings suggest that CI recipients’ quality appraisal can be improved through training, independent of perceptual accuracy. On evaluating the program, the majority of CI and HA trainees reported that the MATP was enjoyable and beneficial in terms of music appreciation. Future directions for continued development of the MATP and testing of its efficacy are discussed.

A Model to Develop Mathematics Education: Modify the Public Traditional Perceptions of Mathematics-Case of UAE Schools’ Principals

This paper addresses the idea that the successful of mathematics reform demands the support of the full educational community including school principals, parents, and students. One of the most important group that affect mathematics reform is school principals. A project related to modifying UAE principals’ perceptions of mathematics is presented. This project consists three steps. In the first step, principals’ perceptions of the nature of Mathematics and its learning and teaching were examined. Results showed that those principals possess many improper perceptions related to Mathematics. In the second step, a professional training program for promoting school principals\' understanding of the new vision of teaching and learning mathematics has developed. This training program comprises two integrated phases: Clarification and conviction, and implementations for principal’s role. It includes a package of paper documents, videotapes, discussion sessions, and group and individual activities. In the third step, the training program is applied on eight principals in UAE. An initial analysis of the qualitative data showed many positive improvements in principals’ perceptions of mathematics education.

The object of this thesis is to ascertain the influence of the basic combatant sports on the fitness of the pupils in the first degree of elementary school. For this purpose training programme karatedo was created on the basis of my experience and experience of many specialists (trainers and scholars). Their valuable advices and observartions have been an inspiration for my work. Gathered information were then properly analysed in the thesis. On this ground an educational programme have been established. It could serve as a useful instrument not only for the teachers and trainers but also for others interested in this area.Before establishing the actual programmme, It had been necessary to examine the pupils' condition in order to be able to define the inicial and final level of pupils's fitness. For this reason the compilation of tests of motoric performance and fitness called EUROFIT was applied. Obtained information were recorded and on the basis of the results the final resume on the influence of the basic combatant sports on the fitness of the pupils in the first degree of elementary school was elaborated.

A força é das capacidades motoras a mais importante para o movimento. Visto que não há movimento em que a mesma não se faça presente. Desta forma, a força se torna importante para as atividades competitivas e recreativas. O que nos leva a sugerir que o desenvolvimento da força faça parte dos planejamentos das aulas de Educação Física. Portanto este estudo teve por objetivo verificar a eficácia de um programa de treinamento de força nas aulas de Educação Física em adolescentes do sexo masculino com idades variando entre 10 e 14 anos. E, também, o resultado do treinamento nas suas expressões de força máxima, força explosiva e força-resistência dos escolares. Participaram do estudo 230 alunos do sexo masculino (10 a 14 anos), após assinarem um termo de consentimento. O grupo experimental (GE=131) participou do programa de treinamento durante 12 semanas, duas vezes por semana. Os exercícios realizados eram pliométricos e calistênicos, sem uso de aparelhos. A execução dos exercícios se deu em forma de circuito. O tempo de treinamento era de 15 minutos durante as aulas de Educação Física. O grupo controle (GC=99) não participou das atividades especificas para o desenvolvimento da força, mas mantiveram as atividades normais das aulas de Educação Física. A força máxima, a força explosiva e a força de resistência foram avaliadas através dos testes de abdominal, salto em distância, arremesso de bola medicinal, dinamometria de mão e barra modificada. Para análise descritiva foram utilizadas a média e o desvio padrão. Às comparações intra-grupos, utilizou-se o teste t pareado e para as comparações inter-grupos, o teste U de Mann-Whitney. Para verificar o poder de observação utilizou-se o Teste Medidas Repetidas. O nível de significância adotado foi 5%. Para verificar a influência da maturação, utilizou-se a Análise de Medidas Repetidas, com covariância da maturação. O grupo experimental apresentou, em todos os testes analisados, aumentos significativos. Já o grupo controle apresentou, em alguns testes, aumentos na média, porém não de forma significativa. Na comparação dos valores inter-grupos observamos que em todos os testes analisados o grupo experimental apresentou aumentos maiores e significativos do que o grupo controle. Na análise de medidas repetidas co-variando a maturação verificou-se influência estatisticamente significativa em alguns testes e em algumas idades. Os resultados mostraram que, para esta amostra, o programa de treinamento de força foi eficaz para aumento das três expressões de força no grupo experimental. E que 12 semanas não foram suficientes para que o grupo controle mostrasse aumentos significativos nas três expressões de força. / Strength is of the coordenative capacities the most important for movement, once there is no movement in which it is not present. And also the results of the training in its expression of highest strength, explosive strength and resistant strength of students. 230 male students participated of the study (10 to 14 years old) after signing a consent term. The experimental term (GE=131) participated of the program during 12 weeks, twice a week. The exercises developed were “pliométrico” and “calestiano”, without the usage of appliances. And that 12 weeks were not enough so that the control group could show meaningful enhance in the three expressions of strength.

Atualmente, as TICs estão presentes em quase todas as escolas, através dos laboratórios de informática. Esses equipamentos, adquiridos com recursos da prefeitura e através de convênio com o MEC/Proinfo, colocam as escolas em condições de oferecer inclusão digital aos seus alunos e professores. O trabalho descreve a implementação do curso Proinfo 40 e analisa este programa de formação continuada da forma como foi desenvolvido em 2011. O estudo apresenta, a partir da percepção dos professores que participaram da formação e das contribuições de autores da área, algumas considerações sobre as tendências de formação continuada, suas possibilidades e limites, para que possa propor intervenções para o seu aprimoramento. A pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, foi realizada com professores da rede municipal por meio de questionários enviados por e-mail. Os resultados apontam para um baixo aproveitamento dos recursos tecnológicos, frustrando as expectativas de todos pela incorporação desses recursos nas escolas. Essa baixa utilização decorre, segundo investigação, da falta de uma formação consistente dos professores para o uso pedagógico das TICs. A partir desta constatação, foi elaborada proposta para uma formação mais ampla e abrangente de professores, que deve ser apresentada aos gestores da educação municipal. Tal proposta, ou plano de ação, leva em consideração a necessidade de alcançar um número significativamente maior de profissionais e, ao mesmo tempo, que essa formação se reverta em práticas pedagógicas eficazes. / This study aims to analyze whether the training for the use of the Information and Communication Technologies offered by the Education Secretariat of Juiz de Fora, contemplates the necessities of its municipal teachers. At present, the Information and Communication Technologies are present in almost every school by means of computer labs. Such equipment, acquired by mans of municipal budget and via an agreement with the Ministry for Education and National Program for Educational Technology, provides the schools the necessary conditions to offering digital inclusion to their students and teachers. The present dissertation describes the implementation of the course Proinfo 40 and analyzes such continued education program as it was developed in 2011. The study presents, from the perception of the teachers who have taken part in the formation and from contributions by experts in the field, some considerations regarding the tendencies in continuing formation, its possibilities and limits, so that we may propose interventions to their improvement. The research, qualitative in nature was focused on the teachers of the municipal educational system by means of surveys sent by e-mail. The results show an underuse of the technological resources, frustrating the expectations of incorporating such resources at school. According to the research, such underuse is due to the lack of a consistent teachers training program focused on the pedagogical use of the Information and Communication Technologies. Thus, a proposal was elaborated for a wide and extensive training program for teachers, which must be presented to the municipal education managers. This proposal, or plan of action, considers the necessity of reaching a significantly greater number of professionals and, at the same time, allowing this training program to provide more efficient pedagogical practices.

However, in view of the competitive calendar with little time for the preseason, it is necessary to better understand the process of physical preparation in this period, specifically regarding its composition and duration. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of two physical training programs, with seven (PT7, n = 13) and four weeks (PT4, n = 7), on the physical fitness of military players (20.1 ± 1.6 years). For pre and post-intervention analysis anthropometry (circumference, body weight and stature), agility, maximum speed in sprint of 10 and 30 meters, vertical jump, repeated sprint ability, isometric strength of lower limbs and maximum aerobic power were evaluated. The results revealed a statistically significant increase for speed, maximum strength, aerobic and anaerobic power for PT7 and PT4. However, only PT4 provided statistically significant increase in lower limbs power (p < 0.01) and agility (p < 0.03), and the PT7 decreased in body mass of players. It is concluded that both training groups were able to optimize the physical fitness of the players; However, PT4 was more effective, causing an increase in lower limbs power and agility / No futebol, diferentes métodos de treinos estão sendo aplicados no período preparatório a fim de elevar ao máximo o nível de aptidão física dos jogadores para subsequente etapa competitiva. O objetivo do estudo foi investigar o efeito de dois programas de treinamento físico, com sete semanas (PT7, n= 13) e quatro semanas (PT4, n= 7) de duração, na aptidão física de futebolistas militares (20,1 ± 1,6 anos). Para análise pré e pós-intervenção, avaliaramse antropometria (circunferência, massa corporal e estatura), agilidade, velocidade máxima em sprint de 10 e 30 metros, impulsão vertical, capacidade de sprints múltiplos, força isométrica de membros inferiores e potência aeróbia máxima. Os resultados demostraram aumento estatisticamente significante para velocidade, força máxima, potência aeróbia e anaeróbia para PT7 e PT4. No entanto, apenas PT4 proporcionou aumento estatisticamente significante na potência de membros inferiores (p< 0,01) e agilidade (p< 0,03), e o PT7 diminuiu a massa corporal dos jogadores. Conclui-se que ambos os grupos de treinamento foram capazes de otimizar a aptidão física dos jogadores; porém, o PT4 foi mais eficaz, provocando aumento na potência de membros inferiores e na agilidade

Emotional intelligence, need for cognition and cognitive reflective ability related to attitudes towards a further training program among preschool staff

There are currently scarce research regarding further training programs and employees’ attitudes toward them. This present work examined 95 preschool employees from one municipal community in matters of emotional intelligence, need for cognition, and cognitive reflective ability and how these influenced their attitudes toward a further training program called International Child Development Programme, ICDP (study 1). Six participants were also interviewed in regards to more organizational aspects of the ICDP-training and their experiences of the program’s implementation in the actual worksituation (study 2). The results of study 1 showed a positive relationship between emotional intelligence and attitudes toward the program. Study 2 revealed lack of follow-ups and sustainability of the program in the real-life work-situation. Suggestions for countering these flaws as well as a more individually focused approach in embracing, applying and maintaining the teachings of a further training program are discussed.
