HIGH-PERFORMANCE FULL-VIEW VISION SYSTEM WITH GUIDANCE SUPPORT OF ACOUSTIC AND MICROWAVE ARRAYSClark, Nicholas, Dunne, Fiona, Lee, Michael, Lee, Hua 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / This paper describes the concept of wide-angle coverage optical vision system integrated with guidance support of microwave or acoustical imaging arrays. The objective is to provide the capability of effective high-resolution full-view monitoring and sensing. The optical component, formed by a multi-camera array, is responsible for the main interface with human users. The acoustical and microwave arrays are integrated, allowing the system to function in the event-triggered modality for optimal efficiency. In this paper, the arrays discussed are in circular configurations. With minor modification, the system can also function with linear array configurations.

Freedom of speech is under serious threat in the west, primarily in the US with policies and regulations infringing on this core value in democratic societies. Universities form policy in order to silence opinions they find contradictory to their values, causing students and teachers alike to risk academic punishment for statements which normally would be guarded within the First Amendment. The central argument behind these infringments are individuals subjective feelings towards, as one may put it, controversial opinions. The aim of this study is through an argument analysis, illustrate the values of freedom of speech in contrast to the demands of primarily minority groups and their advocates, using respectable philosophers and scientists such as John Stuart Mill to answer the question if infringements are applicable in democracies. The conclusions drawn in this essay based on all relevant arguments concludes the answer to be no; a democracy should not infringe on the freedom of speech to safeguard individuals from negative emotional reactions as a result of any legal speech.

The design and construction of the beam scintillation counter for CMSBell, Alan James January 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents the design qualification and construction of the Beam
Scintillator Counter (BSC) for the CMS Collaboration at CERN in 2007
- 2008. The BSC detector is designed to aid in the commissioning of the
Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) during the first 2 years of operation and
provide technical triggering for beam halo and minimum-bias events. Using
plastic scintillator tiles mounted at both ends of CMS, it will detect minimum
ionizing particles through the low-to-mid luminosity phases of the Large
Hadron Collider (LHC) commissioning. During these early phases, the BSC
will provide probably the most interesting and widely used data of any of
the CMS sub-detectors and will be employed in the track based alignment
procedure of the central tracker and commissioning of the Forward Hadron
Calorimeter.

Vznik algických zón na ruce při jízdě na spinningovém kole / The formation of algic zones on hands while riding a spinning bikeFirstová, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
Title: The formation of algic zones on hands while riding a spinning bike Objectives: The aim of the work is verification of changes of nociception in pre-defined points in the cyclists hands during one hour's spinning lesson. Methods: A total of 13 participants (9 female, 4 male), aged between 20-50 years old, took part in this study. First personal data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Subsequently, the pain threshold in the palms and palmar sides of the fingers of both hands was measured using algometer Algometer type II, from the company Somedic Sales AB. The acquired data was then statistically evaluated and compared by Pearson correlation quotient and analysis of variance ANOVA. A comparison of the pain treshold before and after the spinning lesson, related to gender, dominant and non-dominant hand and the age of participants, was eventually carried out. Results: After an hour of spinning had occured, in all measured points there was a reduction in pain threshold with an average of 12.83%. This change was the same in all of the measured points, which means that there was no overloading of one hand or any group of the points. The statistical evaluation has shown, that the change of the pain threshold is not dependent on the gender of the participants, and it is not statistically...

The performance of the ATLAS missing transverse momentum high-level trigger in 2015 pp collisions at 13 TeVChiu, Justin 09 September 2016 (has links)
The performance of the ATLAS missing transverse momentum (ETmiss) high-level trigger during 2015 operation is presented. In 2015, the Large Hadron Collider operated at a higher centre-of-mass energy and shorter bunch spacing (sqrt(s) = 13 TeV and 25 ns, respectively) than in previous operation. In future operation, the Large Hadron Collider will operate at even higher instantaneous luminosity (O(10^34 cm^−2 s^−1)) and produce a higher average number of interactions per bunch crossing, <mu>. These operating conditions will pose significant challenges to the ETmiss trigger efficiency and rate. An overview of the new algorithms implemented to address these challenges, and of the existing algorithms is given. An integrated luminosity of 1.4 fb^−1 with <mu> = 14 was collected from pp collisions of the Large Hadron Collider by the ATLAS detector during October and November 2015 and was used to study the efficiency, correlation with offline reconstruction, and rates of the trigger algorithms. The performance was found to be satisfactory. From these studies, recommendations for future operating specifications of the trigger were made.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of trigger points injections using lidocaine 0,5%, lidocaine 1% and dry needling without any kind of home-based rehabilitation program. 26 patients with myofascial pain and trigger points in masticatory muscles. They were randomly assigned in three groups and received only one application session. The pressure pain threshold (PPT) was recorded before the injection, ten minutes after, 24 hours later, 7, 15, 21 end 30 days after the treatment. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to in all evaluation periods. There were no differences between groups for PPT. but for all groups, the PPT during the time significantly increased when compared the before treatment. VAS showed differences between groups and during the time. VAS was significant lower when compared 30 days to before treatment. Among the groups, 0,5% lidocaine ha the lowest VAS values when compared to the others, but at 30 days there were no differences among them. Despite the differences in VAS and considering there were no differences in PPT increases, we concluded that, in this study, all groups were able to disrupt the mechanisms of trigger point and relieve the myofascial pain symptoms.

Development and deployment of an Inner Detector Minimum Bias Trigger and analysis of minimum bias data of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron ColliderKwee, Regina 19 July 2012 (has links)
Soft inelastic QCD processes are the dominant proton-proton interaction type at the LHC. More than 20 of such collisions pile up within a single bunch-crossing at ATLAS, when the LHC is operated at design luminosity of L = 1034 cm−2 s−1 colliding proton bunches with an energy of p s = 14 TeV. Inelastic interactions are characterised by a small transverse momemtum transfer and can only be approximated by phenomenological models that need experimental data as input. The initial phase of LHC beam operation in 2009, with luminosites ranging from L = 1027 to 1031 cm−2 s−1, offered an ideal period to select single proton-proton interactions and study general aspects of their properties. As first part of this thesis, a Minimum Bias trigger was developed and used for data-taking in ATLAS. This trigger, mbSpTrk, processes signals of the silicon tracking detectors of ATLAS and was designed to fulfill efficiently reject empty events, while possible biases in the selection of proton-proton collisions is reduced to a minimum. The trigger is flexible enough to cope also with changing background conditions allowing to retain low-pT events while machine background is highly suppressed. As second part, measurements of inelastic charged particles were performed in two phase-space regions. Centrally produced charged particles were considered with a pseudorapidity smaller than 0.8 and a transverse momentum of pT > 0.5 or 1 GeV. Four characteristic distributions were measured at two centre-of-mass energies of p s = 0.9 and 7 TeV. The results are presented with minimal model dependency to compare them to predictions of different Monte Carlo models for soft particle production. This analysis represents also the ATLAS contribution for the first common LHC analysis to which the ATLAS, CMS and ALICE collaborations agreed. The pseudorapidity distributions for both energies and phase-space regions are compared to the respective results of ALICE and CMS.

: A study on how to teach about contemporary conflicts in multicultural Sweden.Neuhaus, Daniel January 2019 (has links)
Sweden is a multicultural society which means that there is a lot of pupils in Swedish schools with a background as refugees and with experiences from potentially traumatic and horrible events in their home countries. This study works with two different theories, trigger warning and pragmatism. Trigger warning explains why it could be necessary to hide or protect student from some specific topics or material and pragmatism says that it is educationally successful to use the pupils experiences in the classroom. Contemporary global conflicts, such as the ones that the pupils are coming from, could be a useful subject to teach about in social studies according to the Swedish curriculum. Given this circumstances, this study seeks to examine if it would be educationally and morally appropriate to use this potentially traumatic and sensitive experiences as a method of teaching. According to pragmatism, it would be. However, according to trigger warning, it could be relevant to protect the pupils from this kinds of subjects in school and in the classroom. Therefore, this study contains a tug of war between the two different theories and I interviewed pupils who has moved or has a family who has moved from warzones as refugees about this matter. A core in this study is to take the pupils perspective and examine what good, or bad, that comes out if a teacher in social studies wants to teach about the conflicts that the pupils has a connection to. The result shows that it in fact would be educationally successful even if these subjects are special and a teacher should always think about the circumstances and the methods they are using. In the theoretical tug of war pragmatism comes out as a winner, by trigger warnings could be relevant in some cases.

Mindfulness et addictions : évaluation du programme MBRP (Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention) chez des patients présentant une addiction avec ou sans substance / Mindfulness and addictions : an evaluation of the MBRP (Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention) program in patients with addiction with or without substanceFreiin Von Hammerstein-Equord, Cora Fee 07 December 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this work was to investigate feasibility, acceptability and preliminary outcomes of the MBRP (Mindfulness Based relapse prevention) program as a treatment of addictions. First, this work allowed us to establish that this program represented an acceptable and feasible therapeutic approach as a treatment for alcohol use disorders and that it increased the level of mindfulness and psychological flexibility and reduced craving. Secondly, we were able to identify that home practice, which is central to mindfulness-based treatments, was facilitated by the participants' initial motivation and their feeling of self-efficacy in terms of their ability to set up a practice, while the impression of "doing wrong" or the absence of immediate effects of the practice was a barrier to it. We have also been able to highlight the interest of this program as a treatment for gambling disorder. Through our descriptive results, we showed that mindfulness meditation was a tool that most gamblers readily used to manage craving and impulsive behavior. In addition, we found that participating in the program reduced gambling, gambling symptoms, craving, as well as depression and anxiety and increased mindfulness levels. In addition, we were able to show by examining a case report that the combination of the MBRP program and cognitive training could increase self-control in a patient who was resistant to conventional CBTs. We have also shown that the initiation to mindfulness among caregivers working in an addiction facility has been very well received. On average they participated in 4 out of 5 sessions and, all set up a personal home practice after the group initiation. Finally, we validated the Transdiagnostic Craving Trigger Questionnaire (TCTQ) to assess craving triggers in a population with an alcohol use disorder. Our analyses showed a three-factor solution, composed of unpleasant emotions, pleasant emotions and external triggers and associated thoughts. This thesis work allowed us to conclude that the MBRP program has a strong interest in the treatment of addictive disorders, with or without substances. We were able to show that it worked on underlying processes of this disorder, such as depression and anxiety, that it reduced craving and that it was a way of mobilizing resources, such as psychological flexibility. Our objective is to carry out further research which would allow us to state on its efficacy as compared to a control condition.

Imagining virtual community : online media fandom and the construction of virtual collectivityDeDominicis, Kali Lou January 2016 (has links)
This thesis uses ethnographic research into online media fandom, focusing on self-reflexive analytical documents that fans call meta, to investigate longstanding questions about the nature of virtual community. It argues that virtual documents should be seen as complete and complex interactions in their original form and as social contexts in their own right, and presents a new approach to ethnographic methodology and ethics suited to working in this context. Fans have incorporated various technologies into the infrastructure that constitutes their community, and these have had various effects on the structure and substance of fannish documents and interactions – and on the character of the community as a whole. The stability and visibility of the digital archive is an important feature of virtual community – one that makes fandom more visible, accessible, and historically grounded for both old and new members. This research also deals with conflict, not as a necessarily divisive force but as a natural and important part of how communities evolve and how members negotiate and articulate what their community should be. It discusses fanfiction as a controversial and sometimes problematic genre, and considers trigger warnings as the solution fans have developed to protect vulnerable members of their community from potentially harmful content (such as rape). It also examines conflict with outside authorities, like creators and the administrators who control the virtual spaces that fans inhabit. These conflicts illuminate creativity and feminism as fannish values, presenting fandom as a community that embraces sex-positive female sexuality. More importantly, they suggest that the creation and maintenance of a ‘safe space’ where all members feel respected and comfortable is a key feature of online community. In addition, fannish storytelling (particularly the creation of what fans call fanon) is part of the production of local knowledge, of boundary mechanisms that mark and separate members of the community from outsiders. These stories as part of the process by which fans position themselves within the broader community – and in so doing, locate themselves within smaller cohorts of fans who affirm and support aspects of their personal experiences and marginalised identities (e.g. as women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, or people of colour) through the reorientation and appropriation of story.
