The role of the electric trolley bus in urban transport

03 September 2015 (has links)
M.Com. / The problems and difficulties associated with moving about in the cities of the world are apparent to all urban dwellers. Congestion, delay, noise and accidents feature daily in their lives. Urban growth has increased the demand for services, among which passenger transport forms a major part. This increase in demand is a dynamic, ongoing process and it can be expected that transport will continue to pose severe problems, in spite of academic research, investigations and commissions of inquiry...

The Dual-Process Theory of Moral Judgments : A Way of Explaining Why VMPFC Patients Make More Utilitarian Judgments in Relation to Harmful Situations

Radpour, Ava January 2014 (has links)
According to Joshua Greene’s dual-process theory, our moral judgments are processed in one of two systems in the brain referred to as the emotional (quick, unconscious) and rational (slow, conscious) system. The reason for why people tend to answer differently in the footbridge dilemma compared to the trolley dilemma is because the emotional system is dominating over the rational system. Research has demonstrated that patients with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage make more utilitarian judgments in moral dilemmas in relation to harmful situations. According to the dual-process theory, this is because the emotional system has been impaired which results in that the only working system is the rational system. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how the dual-process theory tries to explain why our moral judgments tend to differ in some moral dilemmas. This thesis will also look at how the dual-process theory tries to explain why patients with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage make utilitarian judgments in relation to harmful situations. This thesis will sustain that the dual-process theory have gained strong empirical support, especially from the research that has been made on patients with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage. This thesis will also argue that some modifications needs to be made on the dual-process theory in order to make it stronger.

Active regeneration : Re-activating Johannesburg's mining belt through a contextual regenerative theory

Pillay, Danvir January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the latent potential of the mining belt in Johannesburg through a regenerative theory, by placing a catalytic intervention which respects the heritage of the mining belt, with a focus on the ecology and the socio-economic value of the land has, thereby turning a liability into an asset. This intervention is seen as the first point of acupuncture in a long rehabilitation process and focuses on using this space to deal with context specific issues. The proposed intervention will investigate the potential of architecture to activate a harmed dormant space in the realm of a decentralized city node. It recognizes the potential of the currently fragmented mining belt to become a gateway to the South of Johannesburg, and embraces an opportunity to restitch the urban fabric. / Mini Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2018. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Forget the Trolley, We're on the Fringe: Complex Ethical Dilemmas in Forensic Practice & Research.

Stinson, Jill D. 01 October 2020 (has links)
Ethical dilemmas often reflect expected concerns – alleviating distress, protecting confidentiality, and maintaining integrity in one’s work. But forensic fringe elicits what seemingly only exists in suspense thrillers. What if you (quite literally) know where the bodies are buried? What if a high-ranking politician publicly declares your client dangerous (and they’re not)? What if your research contributes to bad legislation? Here, enter an escape room of ethical reasoning. Contemplate interesting and intricate dilemmas involving unique client considerations, competing legal and political interests, questions of personal morality, values, and public safety, and the role of science in ethical research and clinical practice.

Initial studies of structure coupling effects for a trolley/RRDF interface

Teh, Chong-Ann 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / The purpose of this thesis is to lay the foundation for analyzing structural coupling effects for a proposed trolley interface between a ship and a roll-on roll-off discharge facility (RRDF). Such a facility could allow heavy cargo transfer at higher sea states. Previous studies have analyzed motions assuming that there is no structural coupling between the trolley and the RRDF. A mathematical model that incorporates structural coupling is developed using the principle of virtual work. In order to assess the degree of necessity for the proposed model we conduct a systematic series of numerical experiments. In these calculations we model the trolley through a generalized stiffness coefficient and assess its influence on RRDF motions. It is shown that modeling of structural coupling may be necessary depending on the relative order of magnitude of trolley structural rigidity and trolley placement. / Major, Republic of Singapore Navy

Konstruktion av trolley för krockprovning / Design of crash track trolley

Duvnjak, Uros January 2018 (has links)
This thesis was performed in the summer of 2017 at Autoliv Test Center in Vårgårda. Autoliv is the world’s leading automotive safety supplier and developer of safety equipment for the vehicle industry. Autoliv also performs crash testing for customers wanting their concept cars tested before production. In crash testing, the vehicle is accelerated by a crash track trolley that connects the vehicle to a steel wire driven with a hydraulic propulsion system. The trolley is a steel construction positioned inside the crash track gripping the wire with a clamping mechanism. The crash testing industry is in constant development due to new safety systems, harder regulations and tougher requirements from governments and vehicle safety organizations. A recently introduced crash test called the NHTSA Oblique 90km/h had issues being performed due to slip between the clamping system and steel wire. The goal of this thesis has been to develop a new crash track trolley that does not malfunction during crash testing. The work has been aimed at designing a trolley that functions at current conditions without implications on the crash track or propulsion system. Four concepts have been designed in 3D, evaluated in a concept matrix, discussed with senior staff and one concept was chosen for further development. The effects of the new design on components have been investigated and adjustments were made. A FEM-analysis was done on the winning concept to look into the physical integrity of the new trolley as well as the potentials in weight optimization. The result was a new trolley plate, elongated by 20 cm and thinned by 10 mm. The same plate weight was preserved and the trolley design was recommended by senior staff at ATC. The trolley was discussed and further recommendations were given.
