The purpose of this thesis is to probe into Goodhart’s theory of Somewheres and Anywheres in the Swedish society. Goodhart’s theory states that a population in the modern 21st century can be divided into the groups Somewhere and Anywhere. This thesis examines if the theory is viable in the Swedish society and if the categories determines the electorates feeling of being able to impact the political agenda. The method used in this thesis is semi-structured interviews with eight electorates — in a younger age bracket (19-29), and an older age bracket (52-63), in four different categories of residential areas. The result indicates that the theory is viable in Sweden and that the Somewhere-electorates feel like they cannot impact the political agenda. The Anywhere-electorates feel like they can, and is the group that has dominated the politics. This may be a explanation for the unstable politics we see in the western society, since Somewheres, according to Goodhart, is half the population, while Anywheres only make up 20-25 percent but is the group ruling politics which leads to discontent, and can be a factor leading to unstable politics.

La thèse présente la modélisation, l'étude expérimentale et le contrôle actif des instabilités aéroacoustiques rencontrées en cavité sous écoulement turbulent à faible nombre de Mach. On propose une formulation problème de stabilité de l'interface fluide séparant deux écoulements uniformes de vitesse différente en integrant les effets acoustiques. Les modes d'instabilité de l'interface sont alors étudiés en fonction du nombre de Mach et de la configuration géométrique. Une maquette comportant une cavité de dimensions réglables est ensuite étudiée en soufflerie à l'aide de mesures de pression. Ces données valident en partie l'approche analytique adoptée. On conçoit alors un dispositif de contrôle des modes d'instabilité, appliqué en particulier dans le cas de leur couplage avec l'acoustique de la veine d'essais. Enfin, un système de vélocimétrie par images de particules synchronisé sur les modes d'oscillation permet de valider l'étude théorique et la stratégie de contrôle.

Pressure Normalization of Production Rates Improves Forecasting ResultsLacayo Ortiz, Juan Manuel 16 December 2013 (has links)
New decline curve models have been developed to overcome the boundary-dominated flow assumption of the basic Arps’ models, which restricts their application in ultra-low permeability reservoirs exhibiting long-duration transient flow regimes. However, these new decline curve analysis (DCA) methods are still based only on production rate data, relying on the assumption of stable flowing pressure. Since this stabilized state is not reached rapidly in most cases, the applicability of these methods and the reliability of their solutions may be compromised. In addition, production performance predictions cannot be disassociated from the existing operation constraints under which production history was developed. On the other hand, DCA is often carried out without a proper identification of flow regimes. The arbitrary application of DCA models regardless of existing flow regimes may produce unrealistic production forecasts, because these models have been designed assuming specific flow regimes.
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible benefits provided by including flowing pressures in production decline analysis. As a result, it have been demonstrated that decline curve analysis based on pressure-normalized rates can be used as a reliable production forecasting technique suited to interpret unconventional wells in specific situations such as unstable operating conditions, limited availability of production data (short production history) and high-pressure, rate-restricted wells. In addition, pressure-normalized DCA techniques proved to have the special ability of dissociating the estimation of future production performance from the existing operation constraints under which production history was developed. On the other hand, it was also observed than more consistent and representative flow regime interpretations may be obtained as diagnostic plots are improved by including MBT, pseudovariables (for gas wells) and pressure-normalized rates. This means that misinterpretations may occur if diagnostic plots are not applied correctly.
In general, an improved forecasting ability implies greater accuracy in the production performance forecasts and more reliable reserve estimations. The petroleum industry may become more confident in reserves estimates, which are the basis for the design of development plans, investment decisions, and valuation of companies’ assets.

L’instabilité chronique de la cheville (CAI) est un fardeau socioéconomique important qui entraine des répercussions néfastes chez la population atteinte, comme des récidives d’entorses de la cheville (ELC), qui peuvent notamment s’expliquer par des déficits biomécaniques aux membres inférieurs. Ces déficits sont notamment observés lors d’activités quotidiennes comme la marche, mais aussi lors de tâches plus difficiles comme l’atterrissage d’un saut. Par contre, les impacts biomécaniques réels d’une CAI lors de la locomotion ne sont pas encore clairement décrits.
Les orthèses plantaires sont couramment utilisées dans le traitement de pathologies musculosquelettiques pour modifier les variables biomécaniques des membres inférieurs (cinématique, cinétique et électromyographie) responsables de ces pathologies. Bien que leurs effets sur la biomécanique du membre inférieur d’individus atteints d’une CAI soient encore méconnus, les orthèses plantaires pourraient permettre de les traiter plus efficacement.
Les objectifs principaux de cette thèse étaient de déterminer les déficits biomécaniques associés à la CAI lors de la locomotion et lesquels de ces déficits peuvent être atténués avec le port d’orthèses plantaires.
L’Étude 1 consistait à réaliser une revue systématique de la littérature sur les impacts biomécaniques d’une CAI lors d’une tâche de marche et de course. L’Étude 2 consistait à identifier les différences biomécaniques entre des individus avec et sans CAI à la marche. L’Étude 3 consistait à déterminer les différences biomécaniques entre des individus avec et sans CAI lors de l’atterrissage d’un saut unipodal sur une surface plane (DROP), inclinée (WEDGE) et instable (FOAM) ainsi qu’à l’atterrissage d’un saut latéral maximal unipodal (SIDE). Finalement, l’Étude 4 consistait à déterminer les effets des orthèses plantaires sur la biomécanique du membre inférieur d’individus atteints d’une CAI lors des tâches de marche et d’atterrissage d’un saut unipodal.
À la marche, les individus atteints d’une CAI présentent de nombreux déficits biomécaniques qui pourraient les prédisposer à subir d’autres ELC, notamment une augmentation de l’inversion et de la flexion plantaire de la cheville. Ces augmentations de mouvement à la cheville contribuent à augmenter les forces verticales latérales au pied, à modifier la cinématique et la cinétique du genou ainsi que l’activité des muscles moyen fessier et long fibulaire. Lors de l’atterrissage d’un saut unipodal, les individus atteints d’une CAI présentent une augmentation de la dorsiflexion de la cheville afin de stabiliser l’articulation. Lors de la tâche WEDGE, la diminution de la préactivation musculaire du long fibulaire pourrait mettre ces individus plus à risque de subir d’autres ELC. De plus, le port d’orthèses plantaires diminue l’activité musculaire du tibial antérieur lors de la tâche DROP et du biceps fémoral à la marche chez des individus atteints d’une CAI. Elles semblent n’avoir aucun effet significatif sur la cinématique et cinétique du membre inférieur lors de la marche et l’atterrissage d’un saut unipodal.
Finalement, cette thèse permet de mieux identifier les déficits biomécaniques à adresser lors de l’élaboration de plan de traitement pour les individus atteints d’une CAI et de mieux comprendre les effets des orthèses plantaires pour atténuer ces déficits. / Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a major socioeconomic burden and has adverse repercussions for the affected population, such as recurrence of lateral ankle sprains (LAS), which could be explained by lower limb biomechanical deficits. These deficits are observed during daily activities such as walking but also during more difficult tasks such as jump landing. However, the real impact of CAI during locomotion has not yet been clearly described.
Foot orthoses are commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pathologies because they modify lower limb biomechanics (kinematics, kinetics and electromyography). However, their effects on lower limb’s biomechanics of individuals with CAI are still unknown. Foot orthoses may help to treat the individuals with CAI more effectively.
The main objectives of this thesis were to determine the biomechanical deficits associated with CAI during locomotion and which of these deficits can be attenuated with foot orthoses.
Study 1 consisted of systematically reviewing the literature on the biomechanical deficits associated with CAI during walking and running. Study 2 consisted of identifying the biomechanical differences between individuals with and without CAI during walking. Study 3 consisted of determining the biomechanical differences between individuals with and without CAI during unilateral jump landing on even (DROP), inclined (WEDGE) and unstable (FOAM) surfaces and during a unilateral maximal side jump landing (SIDE). Study 4 consisted of determining the effects of foot orthoses on lower limb’s biomechanics of individuals with CAI during walking and unilateral jump landing. During walking, individuals with CAI present many biomechanical deficits that may predispose them to sustain recurrent LAS, including increased ankle inversion and plantarflexion. These contribute to increase the lateral vertical forces under the foot, to modify knee kinematics and kinetics as well as the activity of the gluteus medius and peroneus longus muscles. During unilateral jump landing, individuals with CAI present increased ankle dorsiflexion in order to stabilize the joint. During the WEDGE task, the decreased peroneus longus muscle preactivation could put these individuals at greater risk of sustaining recurrent LAS. In addition, wearing foot orthoses decreases the muscular activity of the tibialis anterior during the DROP task and the biceps femoris during walking in individuals with CAI. FOs have no significant effect on the kinematics and kinetics of the lower limb during walking and unilateral jump landing.
Finally, the results of this thesis will help to better identify the biomechanical deficits to be addressed during rehabilitation for individuals with CAI and to better understand the effects of foot orthoses to attenuate these deficits.

In the experience of being a play therapist and social worker, the researcher became aware of the breakdown of adolescent foster placements. Although there are many causal factors of adolescent foster care breakdown, it was the treatment and sustaining of these placements that the researcher was interested in. The utilization of dyadic brief Gestalt play therapy aims to support the relationship between the carer and adolescent in order to sustain and stabilize the foster placement.
The empirical study includes data collection and analysis. The data was gathered through observations and field notes from unstructured interviews, in this case the dyadic therapeutic process with the adolescent and carer. The data was then analyzed, and eleven outcomes were discussed: the building of a therapeutic relationship, the process of dialogue, the gaining of awareness, contact, resistance, the internal working model, polarities, working in the here and now, the utilization of Gestalt experiments and Gestalt play therapeutic techniques. In addition, the implications of the brief Gestalt therapeutic model were identified. These themes are discussed fully in the final chapter encompassing conclusions and recommendations.This study found that it was possible to work effectively with the adolescent and carer in a dyadic brief Gestalt therapeutic way utilizing play therapy techniques. Aim of this thesis is building of a simulator model of a rotary (Furuta) pendulum and design of appropriate regulators. This paper describes assembly of a nonlinear simulator model, using Matlab–Simulink and its library Simscape–Simmechanics. Furthermore the paper discuss linear discrete model obtained from the system response, using least squares method. This linear model serves as aproximation of the system for designing of two linear discrete state space regulators with sumator. These regulators are supported by a simple swing–up regulator and logics managing cooperation.

Dans cette thèse, nous étudions les effets d'un environnement stochastique et de l'utilisation d'une stratégie d'opting-out sur l'évolution de la coopération dans les jeux évolutionnaires. La thèse contient 8 articles, dont 6 sont déjà publiés dans des revues avec comité de lecture. Outre l'introduction, la thèse est divisée en deux parties, la partie 1 composée de 5 articles et la partie 2 de 3 articles.
La partie 1 étudie l'impact de gains randomisés dans les jeux évolutionnaires. L'article 1 introduit les concepts de stabilité pour les jeux avec matrice de paiement aléatoire 2x2 dans des populations infinies avec des générations discrètes sans chevauchement dans un environnement stochastique. On y donne les conditions pour qu'un équilibre, sur la frontière ou à l'intérieur du simplexe des fréquences des stratégies, soit stochastiquement localement stable ou instable. L'article 2 étend les résultats de l'article 1 au cas où la valeur sélective est une fonction exponentielle du gain attendu suite à des interactions aléatoires par paires et montre que, de manière inattendue, le bruit aléatoire environnemental peut rompre un cycle périodique et favoriser la stabilité d'un équilibre intérieur. L'article 3 discute des effets de la sélection faible. Alors que les conditions de stabilité dans un environnement aléatoire reviennent aux conditions du cas déterministe lorsque l'intensité de la sélection diminue, les fluctuations aléatoires des gains peuvent accélérer la vitesse de convergence vers un équilibre stable sous une sélection plus faible. L'article 4 applique la théorie de la stabilité évolutive stochastique à un jeu randomisé de dilemme du prisonnier. On y montre que l'augmentation de la variance des gains de défection est propice à l'évolution de la coopération. L'article 5 étudie les jeux matriciels randomisés dans des populations finies et donne les conditions pour que la sélection favorise l'évolution de la coopération dans le contexte du jeu randomisé de dilemme du prisonnier.
La partie 2 considère un jeu répété de dilemme du prisonnier dans le cas où un comportement d'opting-out est adopté par chaque joueur dans les interactions par paires. L'article 6 étudie la dynamique évolutive de la coopération et de la défection dans ce contexte et montre une possible coexistence à long terme, en supposant une population infinie et un équilibre rapide (en fait, instantané) dans les fréquences des paires. L'article 7 rapporte des résultats expérimentaux avec 264 étudiants universitaires utilisant la stratégie d'opting-out qui soutiennent la prédiction théorique d'une coexistence à long terme de coopération et de défection. L'article 8 étend l'analyse du modèle avec la stratégie d'opting-out au cas d'une population finie et fournit une preuve rigoureuse des deux échelles de temps pour les fréquences de coopération et de défection d'une part et les fréquences de paires de stratégies d'autre part. / In this thesis, we study the effects of a stochastic environment and the use of an opting-out strategy on the evolution of cooperation in evolutionary games. The thesis contains 8 articles, among which 6 are already published in peer-reviewed journals. Apart from the introduction, the thesis is divided into two parts, Part 1 made with 5 articles and Part 2 with 3 articles.
Part 1 studies randomized payoffs in evolutionary games. Article 1 introduces stability concepts for 2x2 matrix games in infinite populations undergoing discrete, non-overlapping generations in a stochastic environment and gives conditions for an equilibrium, either on the boundary or in the interior of the simplex of all strategy frequencies, to be stochastically locally stable or unstable. Article 2 extends the results of Article 1 to the case where fitness is an exponential function of expected payoff in random pairwise interactions and shows that, unexpectedly, environmental random noise can break a periodic cycle and promote stability of an interior equilibrium. Article 3 discusses the effects of weak selection. While stability conditions in a random environment return to conditions in the deterministic case as selection intensity diminishes, random fluctuations in payoffs can accelerate the speed of convergence toward a stable equilibrium under weaker selection. Article 4 applies stochastic evolutionary stability theory to a randomized Prisoner's dilemma game and shows that increasing the variance in payoffs for defection is conducive to the evolution of cooperation. Article 5 studies randomized matrix games in finite populations and gives conditions for selection to favor the evolution of cooperation in the context of a randomized Prisoner's dilemma.
Part 2 considers a repeated Prisoner's dilemma game with an opting-out behavior adopted by every player in pairwise interactions. Article 6 studies the evolutionary dynamics of cooperation and defection in this context and shows possible long-term coexistence, assuming an infinite population and fast (actually, instantaneous) equilibrium in the pair frequencies. Article 7 reports experimental results with 264 university students using the opting-out strategy that support the theoretical prediction of a long-term coexistence of cooperation and defection. Article 8 extends the analysis of the model with the opting-out strategy to the case of a finite population and provides a rigorous proof of the two-time scales for the frequencies of cooperation and defection on one hand and the frequencies of strategy pairs on the other.
