Ribeiro, Daniel Cury January 2006 (has links)
The goal of this study was to implement a link segments biomechanical model, associate to the inverse solution for three dimensions analysis of proximal reaction force and proximal net moments during upper limb movement. The implemented model is composed by five connected rigid segments (hand, forearm, arm, scapula and trunk). The resolution of Newton-Euler movement equations is done through the inverse solution. For kinematics acquisition five digital cameras were used, with a frequency sample of 50 fields/sec. The implemented model was evaluated in four ways: accuracy estimation of the three-dimensional measurements, quantitative and qualitative comparison of the partial results offered by the implemented model with results obtained by instruments of direct measurements (electrogoniometer and electromyography) and calculation of the error propagation in proximal reaction force and proximal net moment values. The results suggest that the model presents coherent results. The estimated accuracy videogrammetry system was, on average, of 1.7 (± 1.5) mm. The joint angular values obtained by kinematics system and electrogoniometer diverged in 36°. The error propagation in proximal reaction force values can arrive up to 25% and up to 100% for proximal net moment. The electromyographic sign and the proximal moment presented temporary synchronism. The model was able to evaluate the proximal reaction force and proximal net moment during upper limb movement.

The material here studied comes from Rio Madeira Formation, locality of Araras, Nova Mamoré city. The UNIR-PLV-M009 specimen, an almost complete skull, presents the synapomorphies of the genus Tapirus but differs all known species for broad frontals, whose pneumatization extends until the frontoparietal suture, for high sagital crest, and for little molarized P2, so characterizing new unominated Tapirus species. The UMVT-4075 specimen, an incomplete palate with all teeth, differs from UNIR-PLV-M009 in the molarized P2, and it shares with Tapirus terrestris this and the other tooth characteristics.

Diets of Spring-Migrating Waterfowl in the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region

Hitchcock, Jr., Arthur Neil 01 January 2009 (has links)
I evaluated diet and food selection of 5 species of spring-migrating female waterfowl including 3 dabbling ducks (Blue-winged teal, Anas discors, Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, Gadwall, Anas strepera) and 2 diving ducks (Lesser Scaup, Aythya affinis, and Ring-necked duck, Aythya collaris). Diet was evaluated with regards to the proportion of invertebrates and seeds consumed, and compared to forage availability data collected in habitats available to them at 6 study locations throughout the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region. I found latitude (i.e., stage of migration), longitude, food availability, and date all influenced the diet of spring migrating waterfowl, with some factors having a stronger influence than others. I observed differing diet trends with regard to foraging guild (e.g., dabbling and diving ducks), as each foraging guild was represented by 1 species that was heavily dependant on invertebrates (dabbling duck - Blue-winged teal; diving duck - Lesser scaup) and 1 species that was heavily dependant on seeds (dabbling duck - Mallard; diving duck - Ring-necked duck). The proportion of invertebrate foods in the diet increased throughout spring for all species of waterfowl, suggesting the importance of invertebrate food sources during spring staging. Data from this study provides valuable information to habitat managers and conservationists wishing to improve spring habitat conditions for migrating waterfowl, which likely influences waterfowl productivity.

Ideologies affecting upper and middle class Afrikaner women in Johannesburg, 1948, 1949 and 1958

Terreblanche, Helen Jennifer 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis investigates discourses surrounding upper and middle class Afrikaner women living in Johannesburg during the years 1948, 1949 and 1958. It uses magazines aimed at upper and middle class women as primary sources and also makes use of interviews with upper and middle class women who lived in Johannesburg during 1948. 1949 and 1958. The thesis uses women's magazines. educational magazines and church magazines, as well as the Vrou en Moeder magazine, mouthpiece of the Suid Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie. Conclusions are drawn about the status and role of Afrikaner middle class women in society, as well as the value systems operating at the time. Differences in discourse and changes over time are accounted for. The thesis also draws attention to the importance of using gender as an historical category, and attempts to broaden the method of history by utilising discourse analysis. / History

Penetrating the 'transitional' category : an 'emic' approach to Lincombian Early Upper Palaeolithic technology in Britain

Piprani, John Hassan January 2016 (has links)
The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition is seen as an important research focus and key to understanding issues surrounding Neanderthal and modern human interactions. Because of this focus upon human type transitional industries without associated human fossil evidence have been marginalised within the debate. This perspective can be termed etic, looking at overall patterns and millennial timescales to answer ‘big’ questions. In contrast my research could be termed emic, using a small collection of ‘transitional’ stone tools to explore the perspective of the producers and users. Human type is not considered relevant here. This approach has allowed a shift in scale; from millennial and pan-European to seasonal and the uplands that now constitute Britain. To explore this emic perspective experimental production has been used to make material a manufacturing process. Metrical, formal and typological analysis has been applied to the archaeological type fossil corpus to more fully comprehend variability. Together these approaches have been used to construct a nuanced and comprehensive châine operatoire model for the industry. This model allowed comparative analysis to derive new understandings from old and new archaeological collections from three sites. Resultant material and behavioural patterns have been interpreted within their particular landscape and general faunal contexts. Emergent themes have been integrated into a seasonal structure to create the desired emic narrative. This process has revealed a maintainable, repairable and adaptable technology used to manage the predictable unpredictability associated with the hunting of migrating large fauna through a long summer season and in uplands of known and unknown stone resources.

Teaching Poetry in Upper Secondary School Courses : A Study in Lesson Design

Juhlin, Johanna January 2018 (has links)
This study attempts to show benefits with different methods when teaching poetry in Upper Secondary courses, with the aim of proving that by using a certain design of the lesson, it is possible to engage the students in English poetry. A secondary aim was to incorporate and implement the theories on sociocultural learning by Vygotsky into the method used in the study. Finally, the study aimed to question the definitions of what constitutes a poem and the ideas of canonized versus non-canonized material within literature. The method chosen for this study was a mixed methods design, and the study applied a deductive approach where a hypothesis based on previous research and ideas within the field was tested. The design of the study was to perform a focus group interview, followed by observations of four lessons with students at Upper Secondary level, and finally a questionnaire for the students. The results from the study were mainly positive and the questionnaire showed that most of the students appreciated the first part the most, although a few students enjoyed both parts. The combined results showed that the design has an impact when it comes to engagement, and it changed a few of the students views on poetry. The main finding in the study was that students prefer less complex poetry that does not belong to the canon, since most of the students marked the first part as the best one. The results showed therefore that the design has an impact when it comes to engagement.

Abstract: Stroke is recognized as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Sequels deriving from this event may lead to motor disability and from mild to severe deficits. In order to better classify sensory-motor dysfunction, balance and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL), quantitative and qualitative evaluation scales have been used. The aim of Article 1 was to verify the correlation between the Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale (FM), Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Barthel Index (BI). Twenty chronic stroke patients were submitted to an evaluation that spent approximately one hour. The results demonstrated that the FM was positively correlated with the BBS and BI, showing that when they are employed together, make it possible to design the general clinical performance of the stroke patient. After stroke, upper limb function impairment is the most common sequel that could lead to permanent dysfunction. Reaching movements made with hemiparetic upper limbs are often followed by compensatory trunk and shoulder-girdle movements. The use of the trunk restraint therapy aims at avoiding the compensatory trunk movement providing the development of normal motor patterns in the affected upper limb. The benefits of the trunk restraint therapy could be observed through the clinical measures scales in eleven stroke subjects that performed twenty training sessions (Article 2). In another study (Article 3), twenty patients were recruited and divided into two training groups (20 sessions): Trunk restraint group (TRG - reaching training with trunk restraint) and trunk free group (TFG - reaching training without trunk restraint, providing emphasis in the verbal cue). The aim was to verify the long term benefits of the task-specific training with trunk restraint using the clinical scales (Modified Ashworth Scale, FM, BI and BBS) and the kinematic analysis (displacement, velocity, angles) like evaluation tools. The evaluations were performed in three phases: the first, in admission time (PRE test); the second, after the end of the treatment (POST test); and the third, three months after the completed treatment (retention test - RET test). Task-specific training associated with the trunk restraint therapy (TRG) proved to be a long-term effective treatment in the enhancement of shoulder and elbow active joint range, as well as in the improvement of the internal planning of the movement. However, the continuous use of restraint may have caused dependence to the patients and was not efficient in long term reduction of the additional degrees of freedom (trunk). Although the verbal cue training (TFG) was more effective in the trunk retention, there was no significant improvement in the upper limb joint ranges. Therefore patients who sustained this type of treatment developed more attention in the abnormal recruitment of the additional degrees of freedom, and did not efficiently explore the multi-joint combinations presented in the upper limb. / Doutorado / Ciencias Biomedicas / Doutor em Ciências Médicas
