Exploring the design space of values-based recruitment : Job seekers’ perspectives / Att utforska designutrymmet för värdebaserad rekrytering : Arbetssökandes perspektiv

Deng, Yutong January 2024 (has links)
Early communication of organizational values helps job seekers self-select out of the recruitment process and make proper career decisions. Recruitment websites are the major tools for learning organizational values and filtering suitable job opportunities but they often fail to provide real and comprehensive values-related information. To satisfy the information needs of job seekers and facilitate values-based job-seeking, this paper conducted design-oriented research, aiming to understand job seekers’ attitudes towards values-based recruitment websites and core considerations for facilitating values-based job-seeking when designing such websites. A clickable prototype of a values-based recruitment website for technical developers to find employers based on shared values was developed with a user-centered and iterative design process and evaluated by 10 users using qualitative methods. The findings revealed that participants’ attitudes toward the website varied among individuals. Core considerations were, for example, organizational trust, person-job fit evaluation, and values-based filter design. Furthermore, specific features to address these considerations are proposed to inspire future designs.

Ethics as a Way to Sustainability in Banking?

Halamka, Radek January 2015 (has links)
v Abstract This thesis proposes a theoretical framework for application of ethics in banking and analyses effects of such application on financial performance of banks. A sentiments-adjusted economic motivation enables employment of ethical concepts, such as universality and humanity, in economics as well as banking. Then, using Bankscope data of more than 80,000 bank-year observations for the years 2003-2013, it is shown that banks applying ethics have higher exposure to real economy and less volatile Return on Equity. A consequent analysis revealed that in comparison with their closest peers those banks have lower profitability caused by higher relative costs that conversely result in lower loan losses. Enhancing cultural heritage in an impact assessment process : analysis of experiences from the UK World Heritage sites

Vakhitova, Tatiana Vadimovna January 2013 (has links)
This three-year PhD study looks at heritage performance in impact assessment (IA) practices, analysing the urban planning context and management experiences of selected urban World Heritage (WH) sites in the UK. The research develops recommendations for assessing the impact of plans, programmes and projects on heritage values in culturally significant urban areas with the emphasis on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of large-scale projects in an urban environment. The research analyses theoretical and empirical approaches to heritage management, investigates methodologies for heritage IA and explores opportunities for and barriers to improved heritage IA in the context of current UK policy. In particular, the research contributes with the conceptual framework of identification, interpretation and management of the cultural heritage in the urban planning system. The review of academic and other relevant literature helped to develop the conceptual framework. The data was collected by means of desk-based documents analysis, case studies, focus-group seminars and an on-line Questionnaire with the experts in the heritage and IA fields. The world’s most well-known and arguably most protected sites with officially identified Outstanding Universal Value – WH sites – provide general lessons for the heritage management and IA of new developments and infrastructure projects. The management of UK WH sites could be said to have the features of what is known as a values-based approach to conservation. This approach emphasises the identification of cultural heritage significance with the early participation of different stakeholders in the planning process; the latter has a scope for improvement in the UK context. Research on the boundaries of the heritage and IA fields leads to an improved understanding of cultural heritage and provides a framework for the IA process. The developed framework and the criteria for an enabling environment could be useful for achieving agreement between the different stakeholders, and could allow a smoother planning decision-making process, leading in turn to a reduced need for monitoring from international bodies. The results are useful for planners and developers in the context of western practice, and could also be relevant to the development of international guidelines.

Today, although many companies have their own sustainability programs, they still face difficulties in applying its concepts considering their material issues and using sustainability as a driver for perpetuity and shared value creation. The system of credit unions studied in this research, even having a great potential on the theme, also faces this challenge. The goal of this study was to analyze the credit unions’ sustainability performance of a system of credit unions in Brazil through a framework that considers specific attributes on coops. The exploratory study embrace a qualitative and quantitative approach. The social banking/values based banking were set as benchmarks for the improvement of sustainability performance on the credit unions, so the interviews were conducted with three experts to compare them with credit unions. A literature and sustainability guideline review was used to propose a framework for analyzing sustainability performance. Also, to consider credit unions specificities a set of interviews with credit union leaders of the System were used to establish internal benchmarks and to feed the framework proposal. The framework was converted into a questionnaire instrument and applied on a survey to the 95 credit unions of the System. As a result, it was found that, contrary to what the literature argues, credit union is just a legal form if their values are not practiced. There is a strong adherence of credit unions to the principles of social banks/values based banks, but requires focus on the use of financial resources to stimulate activities that promotes positive social and environmental impact. In the framework were suggested the following constructs: business model, governance and economic performance, products and services, environmental and social. Also, specifically linked subconstructs to the credit unions was suggested: democratic management, local development, members training and regional coordination/intercooperation. Finally, the average performance of the 34 cooperatives was 2.64 and a median of 2.69, which shows that credit unions have random actions in relation to sustainability and that it is necessary to adopt indicators and formal management processes. The latest processes related to sustainable development presented the greatest opportunity for improvement. The highest performance constructs were governance and economic and social construct, which are the basic pillars of a credit union. The implications of this results for the System is that it is necessary to set an ambition for sustainability strategy to improve the results, mainly by defining indicators, measuring and establishing processes to improve them.

Thiffault, Marie-Andrée 12 1900 (has links)
While some link between heritage conservation and sustainability are already established, we need to improve our ability to protect and enhance heritage within sustainability framework. The evaluation of our built heritage establishes its significance through its associated values. However, some questions needs to be answered: beyond the traditional values attributed to our build heritage, what is the role attributed to the environment, economic and social aspects in the evaluation of a site? In the interest of pursuing the natural alliance between sustainable development and heritage conservation, the question begs to be asked in the particular context of heritage evaluations. Our research topic focuses on a key question: can the definition of heritage continue to broaden to encompass sustainability’s criteria? The thesis objective is to achieve a synthesis of the need to conserve our built heritage and the concept of sustainable development as criteria into the methodology used to evaluate a site to ensure the conservation of heritage for sociocultural, economic and environmental considerations. This research proposes to examine the values based approach and current heritage evaluation methods. To enhance heritage approach, we will take into consideration the sustainable paradigm and its actual translation in architectural and historic preservation practices. We propose to elaborate a new evaluation grid that includes criteria in relation with social, environmental and economic issues. We will validate this grid with a case study: Montreal’s Grain elevator No5. Accordingly, a clear overview needs to include all aspect of our cultural heritage to manage and guide the conservation projects in order to achieve a sustainable approach.

An exploration of work ethics in the Ethiopian civil service : the case of selected federal institutions

Teklay Tesfay Gebre-Egziabher 01 1900 (has links)
Ethics was identified by the Ethiopian government as one of the areas requiring attention and was made an integral part of the ongoing Civil Service Reform Program since 1996. Despite the reform efforts that have been going on for about two decades, no rigorous academic and empirical research has been conducted to understand the nature and depth of the problems. Moreover, the theoretical discourses in the general literature and the national efforts made by the government and its development partners also emphasize on the structural and procedural issues of ethics, giving little focus to the behavioural components or dimensions of ethics of civil servants. The purpose of this study was to investigate and critically analyse the nature and dynamics of work ethics in the Ethiopian civil service; and to assess the ethical environment within which the public sector operates in the country. Mixed research method was applied. Questionnaires were used to collect primary quantitative data from two groups of research participants – civil servants and the service users; whereas primary qualitative data were collected employing in-depth interviews from managers and key experts in the field. Data from secondary sources were also used. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive analysis. The qualitative ones were analysed using the qualitative data analysis technique with the emphasis on the phenomenological approach. The study showed that there is clearly growing awareness of ethical challenges within the civil service, though a fundamental change in the ethical conduct of the employees is not yet realized. It is also found out that there is no problem of legislation and policy frameworks; rather the problem lies in the weak implementation and enforcement of them. Leadership behaviour, absence of strong institutions, poor accountability system, poor remuneration and politicization of the civil service were identified as the biggest challenges to foster ethical conduct. Accordingly, it is suggested that the government play a key role in addressing the problems that hamper the effective implementation of the reform efforts. Other stakeholders such as the civic society organizations, religious institutions, the private sector, schools and the general public should also work closely with the government. Ensuring ethical conduct requires synergy of all actors, ranging from ordinary citizens to high-level decision-making bodies. / Business Management / D.B.L.

There's More Than Corn in Indiana: Smallholder and Alternative Farmers as a Locus of Resilience

Virginia F Pleasant (10290812) 06 April 2021 (has links)
<p>This dissertation is a policy driven ethnography of smallholder and alternative farmers in Indiana that centers food justice and utilizes interdisciplinary frameworks to analyze the adaptive strategies that farmers use to address the specific challenges they face. Through the implementation of adaptive strategies such as regenerative growing practices, the cultivation of community, stewardship of the land, and an emphasis on transparency, the smallholders I worked with over the course of this study negotiate complex agricultural spaces and build the resilience of their farmsteads and the communities they serve. Smallholder and alternative farmers in Indiana are reimagining the agricultural spaces they occupy and driving transformational change of dominant narratives and local food systems. Critiques of conventional agriculture and commodity production are not intended to reify binary perceptions of the agricultural paradigm, but rather to demonstrate that the critical role of smallholder and alternatives farmers should be valued as well. </p> <p> </p> <p>This research draws on four years of ethnographic research, archival sources, and close readings of policy measures and media reports to illuminate the historical context that has positioned smallholders in juxtaposition to large-scale conventional agriculture, and the critical role of smallholder farmers in driving food systems change while centering food justice and community resiliency. The driving research questions for the following essays follow: Why have small scale and alternative farmers chosen to farm (and farm differently)? What specific challenges do they face and how might these challenges be better addressed by existing support systems and new legislation? What can be learned from the alternative narratives and reimagined spaces smallholder farmers engage with? This work joins the growing body of research that challenges agricultural meta-narratives by presenting a counter-narrative of smallholder resilience and the <i>a priori</i> notion that posits agricultural technology as a panacea for everything from world hunger to economics to environmental concerns. </p>

Responsible leadership in Collaborative governance for systemic sustainable development : A study of leaders' reflections on their internal competencies

Johnsson, Mathilda, Sjöberg, Emma January 2024 (has links)
Globally and nationally in Sweden, we see an increased awareness of the interconnectedness of sustainability challenges and an understanding that no single actor or sector possesses the resources, knowledge or creativity needed to develop and implement holistic solutions to bring about disruptive transformations of the currently unsustainable system. This has led to an increased demand for collaborative governance and values-based responsible leadership. Despite this growing interest, we identify a gap in research regarding what leadership approach and competencies are needed to harness the potential of collaboration. The purpose of this study is to understand individual leaders’ perspectives on responsible leadership in collaborative governance aimed at systemic sustainable development. By gathering qualitative data through semi-structured interviews with 9 leaders active in collaborative governance in Sweden we contribute with research on internal competencies in leadership. We analyze the individual leaders’ reflections in relation to three concepts from responsible leadership: ethics and values, self-awareness and stakeholder relations. Through this study we find that responsible leadership provides a suitable holistic approach to address the complex challenges of collaborative governance aimed at systemic sustainable development. In addition, we find that the three internal competencies in focus for this study are deeply interconnected and create synergies when applied in collaborative governance. Lastly, we identify that leaders’ self-awareness reflects an interconnectedness between the leaders’ perception of their own inner sustainability and the sustainability of the outer world consisting of stakeholder relations and the societal system they strive to change through their leadership. Through our findings we identify a need for further qualitative research applying an integrated approach to responsible leadership studies through which the synergies and interconnections of competencies can be better understood.

Experiences of Laotian teachers of the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education training programme

Padayachee, Silverani 01 1900 (has links)
Access to safe water and improved sanitation remains threatened by the ever increasing demand in urbanised cities of the world. Adequate management of this problem could not be achieved through technical and regulatory methods alone. A human values-based education approach, namely the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (HVWSHE) programme, was considered a suitable intervention strategy to bring about the desired changes in attitude and behaviour by the water users. This research involves an empirical case study approach that explores the experiences of Laotian teachers as adult learners of the HVWSHE intervention as well as a literature study on adult education, adult learning facilitation, human values-based education and teacher beliefs. Focus group meetings, lesson observations, participant observation, field notes and a researcher journal was used to collect data. This study revealed that the HVWSHE training programme had a positive effect on the adult learners’ attitude and behaviour towards a better water-use and sanitation-friendly ethic. / Educational Studies / M.
