The debate between the paradigms of mechanical and systemic has caused important revolutions in various fields of knowledge, especially in physics, chemistry and biology. Thus, this work aims to analyze how the most recent systemic theories developed in chemistry, from Prigogine, and biology, as Maturana and Varela, can contribute to the institutional approach of Veblen. For this, will be supporting the hypothesis provided by General Systems Theory of Bertalanffy (2006), which mentions that the principles governing a given system independent of the peculiarities of its components but how these interrelate . The convergence between these three theories becomes valid once the treaty system in all type is characterized by: 1) irreversibility of the trajectory of your changes, 2) with opposition to the idea of equilibrium and 3) the introduction of a evolutionary and historical time approach. This study starts from the introduction to the debate between the paradigms of mechanical and systemic emerged in the physics branch. Following presents the theoretical frameworks of institutionalism of Veblen and the theory of dissipative structures and autopoiesis. Next up is done the analysis of convergence between visas theoretical frameworks, and verified as the approaches of Prigogine along with Maturana and Varela can contribute to the study of institutions. Finally it is shown how the approach developed in this work can assist in addressing issues related to the economy, with emphasis specifically with respect to monetary economics.

Social Emulation, the Evolution of Gender Norms, and Intergenerational Transfers: Three Essays on the Economics of Social Interactions

Oh, Seung-Yun 01 May 2013 (has links)
In this dissertation, I develop theoretical models and an empirical study of the role of social interactions, the evolution of social norms, and their impact on individual behavior. Although my models are consistent with individual utility maximization, they generally emphasize social factors that channel individual decisions and/or shape individuals' preferences. I apply this approach to three different issues: labor supply, fertility decisions, and intergenerational transfers, generating predictions that are more consistent with observed empirical patterns of behavior than standard neoclassical approaches that assume independent preferences, perfect information, and efficient markets. In the first essay, I explain the long-run evolution of working hours during the 20th century in developed countries: the substantial decline for the first three quarters of the 20th century and the deceleration or even reversal of the fall in working hours in the last quarter. I develop a model of the determination of working hours and how this process is affected by both the conflict between employers and employees and the employees' desire to emulate the consumption standards of the rich reference group. The model also explores the effects of direct and indirect policies to limit hours advocated by political representations of workers such as trade unions or leftist parties. In the second essay, I study the coevolution of gender norms and fertility regimes. Since the 1990s, a new pattern of positive correlation between fertility rates and female labor force participation emerged in developed countries. This recent trend seems inconsistent with conventional economic approaches that explain fertility decline as a result of the increasing opportunity costs of childrearing, predicting a negative correlation between fertility and women's labor force participation. To address this puzzle, I develop a model of the evolution of gender norms and fertility in various economic environments influenced by the level of women's wages. Randomly matched spouses make choices related to fertility - labor supply and the division of household labor - based on their preferences shaped by gender norms. In the model, norm updating is influenced by both within-family payoffs and conformism payoffs from social interactions among the same sex. The model shows how changes in economic environments and the degree of conformism toward norms can alter fertility outcomes. The results suggest that the asymmetric evolution of gender norms between men and women could contribute to very low fertility, explaining the positive correlation between fertility and women's labor force participation. Finally, I estimate the effect of exogenously introduced public pensions for the elderly on the amount of private transfers they receive. There has been a long debate whether public transfers crowd out private transfers. Previous empirical studies on this issue suffer from the endogeneity of income that contaminates estimates. I use an exogenously introduced public transfer, the Basic Old Age Pension in Korea, to test the crowding out hypothesis. A considerable proportion of the elderly population, especially women living without a spouse, do not experience the crowding out effect and moreover, among those who do, the size of the effect is relatively small. The results support the redistribution effect of the Basic Old Age Pension targeting the poor elderly in Korea.

Emergence et développement de la théorie financière de l'entreprise avant 1929 : la contribution de Thorstein Veblen / Emergence and development of the corporate finance before 1929 : thorstein Veblen's contribution

Dieudonné, Marion 26 April 2017 (has links)
My PhD dissertation focuses on the theory of the corporate finance that emerged between 1880 and 1929, as well as the contribution of Veblen.First, we highlight Veblen’s analytical and macroeconomic contributions to the business enterprise. He highlights a trinity credit-equity-goodwill by which we assert that he is a "pre-modern" theorist of corporate finance. His vision of goodwill allows him to draw up a theory of investment that is rooted in the affiliation of the Q-Theory. It thus offers a pioneering look at the management of an enterprise, with its analysis of the behavior of the insider and the outsider.Secondly, through an archival work and an investigation into the first corporate finance manuals, we present a reading of the emergence of this academic discipline, resulting from the practice of large companies. A first vocabulary and the first theories emerge. In addition, there is a wider debate about education in the United States and the institutionalization of business education in higher education, in which Veblen takes part.

This research aims to discuss the convergence and divergence issues between the economic theories of Thorstein Bunde Veblen and John Maynard Keynes. To meet these objectives, it presents firstly, the core principals of Veblen’s theoretical underpinnings (based on his selected pieces), such as: instincts, habits, and institutions that shape human behavior. According to the author, the evolution of these elements is important to the understanding of the structure and the functioning of the current capitalist system. After that, the dissertation examines the Keynesian thought (developed after his General Theory, 1936) about the effective demand, the role of long-term expectations to determining employment levels and income, the economic cycles, and his perspective on the future of the capitalist system. The research found similarities in the views of both authors about the components of aggregate demand, about the determination of employment and income, the use of social conventions in decision-making agents, and the economic cycle. Nevertheless, the opinion of the authors on the future of capitalism is divergent

The consumption issues are central to the economic theory, and were approached by various microeconomic schools and as well by other disciplines as Administration, Marketing, Psychology, Sociology, etc. This Dissertation tries to demonstrate the importance of Thorstein Veblen contribution to the theme, primarily by the inclusion of instincts, habits and institutions in the analysis. To this purpose, the study initiate with a historical retrospective of the decades that Veblen wrote his most important works. As the historical phenomena are discussed, there are indications of how those have influenced Veblen’s works. Afterwards, the Veblen’s decision making process is presented, with specific sections to instincts and habits/institution, as well as the interrelation between those factors. This analysis initiate with an overview of the marginalist theory of consumption (the marginal utility theory), and Veblen’s critic to this point of view. Those sections are important to express the origin point of Veblen epistemological proposition for an evolutionary economics. Subsequently, the decision making process is analyzed per se. Over this process lies all Veblen’s consumption theory, both the conspicuous and the standardized. Finally, the primary objective of this Dissertation is investigated, first by the survey of Veblen’s Conspicuous Consumption Theory, the original proposition, than its latter unfolding research, the marginal interpretation. In these section the research attempt to expose in which points the marginal interpretation of the Conspicuous Consumption advances as well in which points it deviates from the original proposition. Finally, from the analysis of The Theory of Business Enterprise book, the research indicates that Veblen’s consumer theory is not restricted to the Conspicuous Consumption of luxury brands. Otherwise, with the introduction of standardized consumption concept, this theory embodies the wage goods as well.

An Institutional Approach to Economic and Social Patterns of Emulation in Colombia, South America

Fernandez, Mauricio, 1955- 05 1900 (has links)
This study is concerned with the historical development and perpetuation of the leisure class in the Colombian society. The study is based on Thorstein Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class. The main purpose of this study is to analyze in terms of the evolution of social institutions the problems that the Colombian society faces today. Spanish values and traditions are analyzed, as well as more recent values and modes of behavior adopted by the leisure class. Institutions such as the church, the educational, employment and political apparatus are analyzed in terms of how they contribute to the perpetuation of elites. This study concludes that as long as there is economic surplus in society, a leisure class will exist. The elites forming the leisure class may be displaced by counter-elites, which in turn will conform a new leisure class.

Odraz haute couture v českých zemích / Reflection of haute couture in the Czech countries

Hoffmannová, Soňa January 2014 (has links)
"Reflection of Haute Couture in The Czech lands" deals with fashion in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century in the Czech lands. Before confirmation of national independence in the form of Czechoslovak republic the Czech fashion was evolving between two opposing tendencies. First, there was acceptance of influence from abroad, especially from France, England and Germany particularly through fashion magazines, and second, there was an effort to preserve national originality. The target of this thesis is not the analysis of fashion trends in the Czech environment but analysis of fashion as a phenomenon linked to wider societal aspects, political affiliations, construction of national identity and specific, nearly missing position of Czech aristocracy. This thesis monitors the status of a tailor in the Czech lands, his struggle with the beginning of apparel production and compares his emplacement with the French tailors, also known as coutiers who have created an autonomous and independent status of the clientele already in the second half of the 19th century.
