Käffer, Márcia Isabel January 2011 (has links)
Lichens are symbiotic organisms considered as biological indicators and like genotoxicity biomarkers, are widely used to evaluate air quality in urban areas. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the lichen community in Porto Alegre, RS, by mapping lichenized mycota and also aims to compare the influence of certain pollutants morphophysiological structures of some lichen species and in the mutagenic and cytototoxicity activity in atmospheric particulate matter. The lichen community was analyzed in order to verify structure alterations, in addition to morphophysiological damages in two species (Parmotrema tinctorum and Teloschistes exilis) caused by the action of specific pollutants. Thirty sample stations were analyzed, distributed into twenty-nine areas in the city and a reference area in the State Park of Itapuã, RS. The band rubber method was used for mapping lichens, the transplant methodology was used in order to analyze the action of some atmospheric pollutants and the Salmonella/microsome assay was used to evaluate mutagenicity and cytotoxicity of PM10 organic extracts. One hundred and forty-four lichen taxa were registered. Alterations in the structure of the lichen community were verified in the analyzed areas. Pollutant concentrations, including PAHs were observed in the exposed species, in addition to morphophysiological damages. Mutagenic activity was also verified in the first months of lichen exposure, as well as the presence of nitrocompounds in the air. A general evaluation of the urban lichen community verified that traffic flow, climate variables and topography of the sampled stations may have contributed to the results obtained. The use of both bioindicators and mutagenesis biomarkers provided an evaluation of air quality and helped to determine of the presence of environmentalaggressive compounds. The use of lichens as indicators of alterations in urban environments is recommended and may serve as a tool for monitoring programs in cities.

A meiofauna da baía do Almirantado e áreas adjacentes no estreito de Bransfield (Antártica), com ênfase em Nematoda / The meiofauna from Admiralty Bay and adjoining areas in the Bransfield Strait (Antarctica), with focus on Nematoda

Paula Foltran Gheller 15 August 2014 (has links)
The Antarctic Peninsula has a deep shelf featuring similar conditions to the deep sea and it is highly affected by climatic variations. At Admiralty Bay and the adjacent slope in the Bransfield Strait, the meiofauna below 60 m depth is unknown. The present study aims to characterize the meiofauna community, and so generate a database on biodiversity and structure through the linkage to environmental variables (sediment type and quantity/quality of food). Composition and density of meiofauna have been evaluated across depth gradient (100 and 1100 m), sediment column (0-6 cm) and two years of contrasting climatic conditions (dec/2008 and dec/2009). Nematode biomass and diversity in specific level have been analyzed exclusively in the dec/2008 samples. Meiofauna density and nematode biomass were higher than in other localities. There was great variation of meiofauna density between the years. In dec/2008, density varied along the depth gradient: higher at the Admiralty Bay and lower at the Bransfield Strait, where the sediment was coarser (indicating high hydrodynamics). This year was the warmest, with weak influence of ice cover, high primary productivity and high phytodetritus concentration. Distinctively, in dec/2009, no bathymetric variation in meiofauna density or environmental variables was observed. This year was the coldest, with an extensive and enduring ice cover and low primary productivity. Density and diversity were higher in the superficial layer of the sediment. In total 83 nematode genera were found, comprising 185 morphospecies, mostly of new species. Species diversity of nematodes was elevated as reported in other Antarctic regions and in the deep sea. Nematode total biomass was five times higher than the global mean values, showing variation along the depth gradient. Individual biomass of layer 0-2 cm was low at the bay and high at the strait. Individuals were longer and thinner in deeper depths and sediment layers. Meiofauna and nematode biomass distributions seem to be more influenced by physical processes (currents, sediment ressuspension, steep topography) than by food availability.

Three-dimensional modeling of inland waters optical properties from aerial hyperspectral images /

Carmo, Alisson Fernando Coelho do. January 2019 (has links)
Orientador: Nilton Nobuhiro Imai / Abstract: The acquisition of data using Remote Sensing and in-situ sampling allows several data sources to be integrated for the analysis and observations of environmental characteristics and may require computational methods to support the data processing, exploration and analysis. The need to integrate data from different sources is highlighted in studies of dynamic and complex environments that frequently change, such as hydroelectric reservoirs. Reservoirs are artificial ecosystems, which influence directly the regional characteristics, mainly because of their multipurpose use. The interactions of the electromagnetic energy with the optically active components occur along the entire water column, so that the behavior of the light field reflects the changes applied along the entire euphotic zone. However, the values taken from images are used accordingly to a plane and associated with the respective point or area of surface. The calibration of bio-optical models considering only the surface sampling data can not deliver fully effective results because the electromagnetic radiation interacts with the components located along the water column and the response captured by the sensors does not only represent the value associated with the surface. Considering this scenario, this work proposes an investigation on the influence of the vertical distribution of the optical properties along the water column, in order to contemplate records about the interaction in different levels of depth, b... Taxonomy, distribution and aspects of the biology of some deep-living copepods in B.C. inlets and adjacent water

Koeller, Peter Arthur 02 February 2021 (has links)
The bathypelagic copepods Spinocalanus brevicaudatus, Scaphocalanus brevicornis and Heterorhabdus tanneri have established relatively large, permanent breeding populations in Bute and Jervis Inlet, British Columbia. They are found only rarely in the shallower Strait of Georgia. The preference shown by Spinocalanus brevicaudatus and Scaphocalanus brevicornis was attributed to the deep living habits of breeding adults. The reason for H. tanneri's preference of deep water was not apparent from the distribution study. Two general patterns of vertical distribution were seen among the calanoid capepods in the inlets. The common interzonal species such as Calanus glacialis preferred a definite depth interval near mid-water. The deep-living species such as Spinocalanus brevicaudatus were found throughout the water column below the thermocline, in about equal numbers. Maximum numbers usually occurred in the depth interval immediately below the thermocline. Only females of Metridia pacifica showed a strong diurnal migration pattern in July. This migration became less intense near the head of Bute Inlet. The vertical distribution and migration patterns of Spinocalanus brevicaudatus, Scaphocalanus brevicornis and H. tanneri appeared to increase the chances of secual encounters in these relativelyt rare species. The interzonal and deep-living species showed contrasting life-histories. The interzonal species exhibited a well-defined breeding season, with adults maturing in the winter, and young appearing in the spring. The deep-living species did not show a yearly breeding cycle. Females dominated the population at all times of year, and a relatively small percentage of males and females were always present. A reduction in the male:female sex ratio occurred during or after the last moult in Spinocalanus brevicaudatus and Scaphocalanus brevicornis. In the animals the male has reduced mouth parts and probably dies soon after mating. H. tanneri males do not have reduced mouth parts. This species had a sex ratio close to unity at all times. An increase in total copepod numbers was observed with increasing distance from the head of Bute Inlet. An increase in the percentage of juveniles in the population of most species was also observed with increasing distance from the inlet head. Spinccalanus brevicaudctus, Scaphocalanus brevicornis and H. tanneri are redescribed. Comantenna columbiae is described for the first time. / Graduate

Underwater Use of a Hyperspectral Camera to Estimate Optically Active Substances in theWater Column of Freshwater Lakes

Seidel, Michael, Hutengs, Christopher, Oertel, Felix, Schwefel, Daniel, Jung, András, Vohland, Michael 21 April 2023 (has links)
Freshwater lakes provide many important ecosystem functions and services to support biodiversity and human well-being. Proximal and remote sensing methods represent an efficient approach to derive water quality indicators such as optically active substances (OAS). Measurements of above-ground remote and in situ proximal sensors, however, are limited to observations of the uppermost water layer. We tested a hyperspectral imaging system, customized for underwater applications, with the aim to assess concentrations of chlorophyll a (CHLa) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the water columns of four freshwater lakes with different trophic conditions in Central Germany. We established a measurement protocol that allowed consistent reflectance retrievals at multiple depths within the water column independent of ambient illumination conditions. Imaging information from the camera proved beneficial for an optimized extraction of spectral information since low signal areas in the sensor’s field of view, e.g., due to non-uniform illumination, and other interfering elements, could be removed from the measured reflectance signal for each layer. Predictive hyperspectral models, based on the 470 nm–850 nm reflectance signal, yielded estimates of both water quality parameters (R² = 0.94, RMSE = 8.9 µg L−1 for CHLa; R² = 0.75, RMSE = 0.22 m−1 for CDOM) that were more accurate than commonly applied waveband indices (R² = 0.83, RMSE = 13.2 µg L−1 for CHLa; R² = 0.66, RMSE = 0.25 m−1 for CDOM). Underwater hyperspectral imaging could thus facilitate future water monitoring efforts through the acquisition of consistent spectral reflectance measurements or derived water quality parameters along the water column, which has the potential to improve the link between above-surface proximal and remote sensing observations and in situ point-based water probe measurements for ground truthing or to resolve the vertical distribution of OAS.

Distribuição e abundância de larvas de Phosichtyidae e condições oceanográficas na região entre o cabo de São Tomé (RJ) e a ilha de São Sebastião (SP) / Distribution and abundance of larval Phosichthyidae and oceanographic conditions in the region between São Tomé cape (RJ) and São Sebastião island (SP)

Goçalo, Cassia Gongora 12 September 2008 (has links)
Horizontal and vertical distribution of mesopelagic Phosichthyidae fish larvae was described based on data sampled collected from the surface up to 200 m depth, and at five stratums on the water column. Patterns in the larval vertical distribution of marine benthic invertebrates in a shallow coastal embayment

Lloyd, Michelle 20 September 2011 (has links)
Processes during the meroplanktonic phase regulate population dynamics for many marine benthic invertebrates. I examined changes in vertical distribution of different meroplanktonic larvae in a coastal embayment during a stable period, at high temporal frequencies and spatial resolutions. Plankton samples were collected at 6 depths (3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24 m) using a pump, every 2-h over a 36- and a 25-h period, during a spring and neap tide, respectively, concurrently with measures of temperature, salinity, fluorescence and current velocity. For 10 gastropod taxa, larval vertical distribution was mostly related to the thermal structure of the water column. Each of 7 taxonomic groups was found either exclusively near the surface, associated with the fluorescence maximum, or showed diel changes in distribution. These larvae that occupy different depths in the water column exhibit different dispersal potentials. / Biogeographical data contained in this thesis will be submitted to the Oceanographic Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) and may be accessed on-line at http://www.iobis.org

ASSESSMENT OF THE CARBON SEQUESTRATION POTENTIAL IN SOIL AND IN BELOWGROUND BIOMASS OF SIX PERENNIAL BIOMASS CROP

CHIMENTO, CARLO 28 January 2015 (has links)
The objective of the present research was to identify the bioenergy crop with the greatest carbon sequestration potential among three perennial woody crops (poplar, black locust and willow) and three perennial herbaceous crops (giant reed, miscanthus and switchgrass) at the sixth year from plantation and in the same location. First of all the SOC stock variations for the first 1 m soil depth and the quantification of seven soil C fractions related to SOC stabilization level of the first 30 cm of soil were assessed; secondly, a characterization of the root system and the traits which affect the carbon allocation in soil were considered. The results confirm that the establishment of perennial bioenergy crops in previous arable fields can be a suitable option to sequester carbon (C) belowground. However, a different C sequestration capacity was observed between woody and herbaceous crops: woody species showed the greatest SOC sequestration potential in the first soil layer (0-10 cm of soil) but their ability to allocate root biomass in the deeper soil layers was limited; while, the herbaceous species allocated a high amount of root biomass in the deeper soil layers, but only switchgrass and miscanthus sequester C in the first soil layer.
