Administrators' Perceived Knowledge, Importance, and Perceptions of the International Society for Technology in Education Standards for Administrators and Virginia Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel

Hill Muchenje, Kimberly Tomeka 10 August 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to determine administrators’ self-assessed perceived knowledge, importance, and perceptions of the International Society for Technology in Education Standards for Administrators (ISTE Standards-A) and the Virginia Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (VTSIP). A survey instrument based on the ISTE Standards-A and the VTSIP was used in the study. 43 administrators in Virginia participated in the study. The participants were members of the Virginia Association of Elementary or Secondary School Principals. The study found that administrators perceived their knowledge of the ISTE Standards-A as good and their knowledge of the VTSIP as excellent. Administrators strongly agreed that both the ISTE Standards-A and the VTSIP were important in their practice. Additionally, their perceptions of both the ISTE Standards-A and the VTSIP were excellent. There were no statistically significant differences found between the perception of the standards and most of the demographic variables. However, there was a statistically significant difference found between male and female perceptions of the VTSIP. Also, there was a statistically significant difference found between administrators’ perceptions of the ISTE Standards-A and perceptions of the VTSIP. The study provided quantitative data on administrators’ perceived knowledge, importance and perceptions of practicing the ISTE Standards-A and the VTSIP. The findings of this study provide valuable information for administrators as they investigate their technology leadership and note areas of improvement, and for the Virginia Department of Education, local education agencies and universities. It is recommended that future research look qualitatively at administrator perceptions of the standards and why males and females differ in their perception of the standards. Further research is also recommended using a larger sample in the state or nationwide, and conducting more research to look into administrative leadership preparation programs, administrators’ perceptions of practice, program alignment or administrator implementation of the ISTE Standards-A and the VTSIP.

The Role and Status of Women in the Fiction of James Leslie Mitchell/Lewis Grassic Gibbon

Hunter, Sandra F.M. 04 1900 (has links)
James Leslie Mitchell's critique of modern society, a society which nurtured aggression, colonialism, religion, racism, and gender bias, was rooted in his background, experience and commitment. Being a revolutionary writer, he held progressive and visionary views, and claimed his works were propaganda, carrying messages to reshape society on ancient values and socialist principles. In his Scottish short stories (written under his pseudonym Lewis Grassie Gibbon) wives and daughters were neglected and ignored, yet forced to do menial tasks on the farm. Women in his English stories and novels were better situated and educated, taking an active role in their own development, showing determination to exercise free will and develop self-awareness, and encouraging others to emancipate themselves. A number of characters accepted atheism and Communism, and believed in Diffusionism wherein people were simple, cooperative, without malice. Undoubtedly, Mitchell/Gibbon's crowning achievement was A Scots Quair. Chris Guthrie embodied the qualities of his earlier heroines. She loved the soil but disliked the workings, preferred the accuracy of English words and deplored the crude talk of the farming communities; yet she was impelled to carry on as a farmer. Chris was married three times, widowed twice, separated once, had one son, and few friends; and lived in a croft, a manse and a boarding house. She abhorred war, favoured birth control, had a glimmering of the Golden Age, and exhibited the attitudes, beliefs and opinions of her creator. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Jung on Nietsche's Zarathustra : what lies beyond good and evil?

Bell, David Lawrence 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Summary: This work aims at establishing Jung's importance as a Nietzsche commentator. Although Jung's work is generally unacknowledged by the mainstream of Nietzsche scholarship, a number of philosophers have joined him in recognizing the relevance of Iranian religious lore to Nietzsche; the visionary nature of Nietzsche's experiences of Zarathustra; and the link between these experiences and his criticism of ethics. Jung sees Nietzsche as something of a kindred spirit, "and refers to that philosopher again and again throughout his writings. In his seminar on Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra, Jung analyzes that work much as he would a patient's dream. While this approach allows Jung to project his own views onto Nietzsche, it also succeeds in restoring essential aspects of Nietzsche's thought which other, less foolhardy commentators fail to capture. Nietzsche and Jung both speak of going "beyond good and evil" (jenseits von Gut und Bose) as an integral part of their respective conceptions of human fulfillment. The notion that we ought to try to transcend the distinction between good and evil, rather than obstinately cling to the good, potentially constitutes an immense, fundamental challenge to our ordinary beliefs about ethics. At the same time, Jung's elaboration of this into a more general form of nonduality suggests a solution to that most basic problem of ethics--which Nietzsche raised most forcefully--namely that of how ethical standards might be justified without falling prey to such basic obstacles as the "is/ought" problem. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Litt. et Phil. A conceptual analysis of visionary leadership and its implications for educational transformation in schools

Galloway, Greta Marie Mandy 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There are many new developments in education taking place specifically in the field of schooling. Some of these developments - school based management, OBE curriculum developments and the devolution of control to the school level have brought with it many significant policy changes. Many educational leaders are struggling to keep abreast with these transformational changes that are confronting them with regard to leadership and management of education, and educational structures within the school. Therefore, visionary leadership is an essential ingredient in understanding the democratic changes and restructuring taking place at present. Many principals at schools are struggling with the changes, while possibly not fully understanding the political, social and economic dynamics of these changes. This assignment seeks to establish the need for visionary leadership in order to meet the challenges and constraints educational leaders face in their attempts to effect transformation in South Africa. I strongly identify with the democratic principles used to overcome the challenges and constraints to redress education in South African schools. Interviews were conducted and data was constructed with principals of six different schools in the East London area. The educational leaders interviewed, ranged from primary to high school principals giving a vast expanse of expertise as leaders within a specific school community. This assignment is based on the assumption that there is scope for educational leaders to bring about greater change and transformation in schools. There are many ways to visualise an effective school landscape based on a combination of personal, organisational and professional strategies. This assignment can be considered a contribution in this regard.

Favaron Peyón, Pedro M. 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation delves into the knowledge-practices of Amazonian peoples, drawing on discourses produced by members of these nations. It explores sacred songs, stories and academic texts of ancient Indian thinkers. The dissertation signals that Amazonian practices belong to a context of meanings which consider that all living beings have thoughts and spirit; that spiritual beings defend these living beings against possible abuses. Human beings must transcend their state of consciousness, navigate the invisible worlds and establish communication with these spirits to uphold existential balance. According to Amazonian thought, human communities are not self-sufficient and must maintain a constant relationship with the multiplicity of beings that populate the visible environment and invisible worlds. Three key concepts account for the practices of Amazonian peoples: depredation, transformation and balance. Depredation refers to Amazonian practices involving the destruction of other beings in order to sustain the life of the community. According to Amazonian thought, depredation should be measured and only that which is necessary for survival should be killed. Depredation is governed by spiritual beings. Amazonian transformation practices are designed to safeguard community ties, transfiguring all that enters or leaves it, so that no external agent may jeopardize these ties of affection. The practices of depredation and transformation are complementary and both must be carried out in a balanced manner, respecting ancestral knowledge and cosmic laws established by higher spirits. With regard to the method of analysis, the dissertation considers Amazonian discourses from their own cultural logic and does not impose pre-established methodologies on them. Consequently, the present scholarly work makes a profound attempt at achieving an intercultural intellectual production; as it is indigenous voices themselves that express their ideas and the meaning of their practices. Overall, the dissertation enters into a critical dialogue with its field of study, both challenging and broadening certain concepts forged by the anthropological literature dedicated to the region’s study, drawing on the ancient Amazonian knowledge that nurtures the practices of those nations.

Was realized the exposure of some selected works of the artist in a Data Show device to fifteen students, between 18 and 29 years of PUC-SP. After exposure of the works, was asked to research participants to tell a story about the works presented and a semi-structured interview was conducted. The data were organized by the Collective Subject Speech (DSC) and interpreted using the approaches of Jung's complex psychology and aesthetics of reception. It was observed that the works have the potential to profoundly stimulate the unconscious. Subjective responses were marked by intense emotional experiences, whether welfare or malaise, mobilizing projections and psychodynamic contents of the participants. Some themes became salient in the experience of the participants who interacted with the works, such as dualities, death, finitude, the strange, religion and spirituality, the body and the relationship between everyday life and unconventional experiences. The dissertation has enabled an understanding of the subjective responses of students, encouraged by selected works of artist Alex Grey / A presente dissertação teve como objetivo compreender as respostas subjetivas de estudantes, catalisadas por um conjunto de obras do artista visionário Alex Grey.

Behmer, Sara Isabel 15 December 2005 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T16:44:35Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Final 23 nov 05.pdf: 659695 bytes, checksum: 26500e108b828b8a8f98dc43a6af772f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-12-15 / Leadership has been considered one of the basic issues for a successful company in the contemporary world since there is an upward demand for leaders that are able to sustain the Agency s success. The concept of Agency has to be understood as professionals that are in leadership positions inside the organization and are working for the stockholders. Among the many leadership theories developed in the last ten decades there is the group of Contemporary Leadership Theories and in this group there is one theoretical approach that outstands, the Visionary Leadership approach developed by Burt Nanus in 1992. This approach suggests a way of leadership that holistically benefits the organization which results are reflected in every stakeholder. Organizations inevitably achieve success under this kind of management. Therefore the purpose of this study is to analyze if nowadays successful leaders agree with the approach suggested by Burt Nanus and if they do so, how this is put into practice. In order to obtain the data for this study, a research was conducted with the first leader of many profit-oriented companies. Data were collected through a questionnaire using the Likert 5 possibilities scale in order to asses the degree of agreement / disagreement with the Visionary Leadership concepts. Also was researched with those leaders, which were the recognized drivers that lead to the development of this leadership style. The obtained results point that the researched leaders considers themselves visionary leaders, validating the visionary leadership concept and suggesting ways to be used in its development.
