La voix-over dans le cinéma documentaire

Campeau-Vallée, Guillaume 08 1900 (has links)
Mots clés : cinéma, documentaire, voix-over, parole, son. / This exploratory thesis examines the various practices of voice-over in documentary film. Questioning the highly heterogeneous nature of voice in the over register, I first discuss it with respect to the material aspects of sound before examining it’s functions in the elaboration of documentary discourse. Because this is a new undertaking, I will travel back- and-forth between the rare studies concerning voice-over–almost exclusively confined to fiction film (Kozloff, Châteauvert, Boillat)–and works proposing different theoretical and critical views on the representation of reality in documentary films (Nichols, Niney, Gauthier). This will help bring to light the specificities of documentay cinema where voice- over is used less towards the production of a narrative and more towards the articulation of discourse. With the help of examples from a range of documentary films, I will show how speech (both as an occurrence of sound and as a means of producing meaning) is placed over the images, in a sometimes converging, but sometimes diverging, interdependent relationship. This will help demonstrate that the specific use of voice-over in documentary film makes manifest the act of speech of the sensitive, thinking subject who offers, no more no less, than an interpretation of the world. Also, this thesis is a diptych and needs to be considered in correspondence with the documentary film D'où, chose étonnante, rien ne s'en suit that constitutes second part of the work. Keywords : cinema, documentary, voice-over, speech, sound.

Lost in Translation : Voice-over Translated TV as a Source for Incidental Language Acquisition

Sochacka, Anna Justyna January 2020 (has links)
Voice-over translation (or “audio subtitles”) is the only audio-visual translation (AVT) used for feature-length films on Polish television. Since the reader (lektor) only partially overrides original dialogues and some parts of the actors’ speech are clearly audible, it can be considered as marginal L2 exposure. The aim of this study is to investigate the attitudes of Polish speakers of English towards voice-over translated television and to determine if TV shows and films with a lektor can be a source of incidental language acquisition. The study consists of two parts, a survey and an experiment. The survey investigated the attitudes of Polish speakers of English to different types of AVT, especially their opinions about the influence of voice-over translated TV shows on their English proficiency. The data reveals that Polish speakers of English have rather negative opinions about this AVT and numerous instances of unfaithful translation are easily spotted by them, which creates an image of unprofessional and inaccurate AVT. They seem not to consider films with a lektor as L2 exposure and tend to think that introducing subtitles to television would improve the L2 competence in Poland. However, the informants admitted being able to spot unfaithful translation, meaning that they pay attention to the foreign language in the background. The experiment was conducted to examine the possibility of incidental language acquisition from voice-over translated TV shows. 26 high school students, Polish learners of English watched 4 clips with voice-over translation with instances of unfaithful translation. The study has empirically proven that Polish learners of English are able to spot the differences between the original dialogue and its translation. Thus, watching voice-over television programming can be considered L2 exposure.

Unified Communications with Lync 2013

Kohen, Alexandre January 2013 (has links)
Unified Communications solutions bring together several communication modes, technologies, and applications in order to answer businesses’ and individuals’ growing need for simpler, faster, and more effective communications means.  Although many hardware-based products allow the integration of telephony within a computer network environment, telephony features of software-based unified communications solutions are seldom used, which limits their effectiveness or requires another solution to be used jointly. This master’s thesis project aims to demonstrate that unified communications solutions based on Microsoft Lync Server 2013 can effectively address a wide variety of business scenarios, including a traditional telephony system replacement.  The first part of this master’s thesis introduces background knowledge about unified communications and associated technologies, as well as the different components of the selected unified communication solution. The case study presented in this thesis is the first large-scale Lync 2013 deployment with a complete telephony offering in France. The presentation follows the complete deployment process, starting from the analysis of the client’s needs to the solution design, construction, and validation. This project demonstrated the suitability of Lync 2013 as a telephony system replacement. However, the transition from a classic telephony solution to a unified communications solution can be a technical challenge. An essential step in making this transition successful was to take the users’ needs into account. It was also essential to accompany these users throughout the transition.

Haddouche, Fayçal 04 1900 (has links)
Wireless mesh networks (WMNs), because of their advantageous characteristics, are considered as an effective solution to support voice services, video and data in next generation networks. The IEEE 802.16-d specified for WMNs, through its mesh mode, two mechanisms of scheduling data transmissions; namely centralized scheduling and distributed scheduling. In this work, we evaluated the support of the quality of service (QoS) of the standard by focusing on distributed scheduling. System problems in the support of voice traffic have been identified. To solve these problems, we proposed a protocol for supporting VoIP, called Assisted VoIP Scheduling Protocol (AVSP), as an extension to the original standard to support high QoS to VoIP. Our preliminary simulation results show that AVSP provides a good improvement to support VoIP.

No. of bitstreams: 1 120423 Master Thesis FGV.pdf: 3697873 bytes, checksum: f3ccbecacf430eaee0f0606f9daa9f36 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-04-23 / Internet Telephony (VoIP) is changing the telecommunication industry. Oftentimes free, VoIP is becoming more and more popular amongst users. Large software companies have entered the market and heavily invest into it. In 2011, for instance, Microsoft bought Skype for 8.5bn USD. This trend increasingly impacts the incumbent telecommunication operators. They see their main source of revenue – classic telephony – under siege and disappear. The thesis at hand develops a most-likely scenario in order to determine how VoIP is evolving further and it predicts, based on a ten-year forecast, the impact it will have on the players in the telecommunication industry. The paper presents a model combining Rogers’ diffusion and Christensen’s innovation research. The model has the goal of explaining the past evolution of VoIP and to isolate the factors that determine the further diffusion of the innovation. Interviews with industry experts serve to assess how the identified factors are evolving. Two propositions are offered. First, VoIP operators are becoming more important in international, corporate, and mobile telephony. End-to-end VoIP (IP2IP) will exhibit strong growth rates and increasingly cannibalize the telephony revenues of the classic operators. Second, fix-net telephony in SMEs and at home will continue to be dominated by the incumbents. Yet, as prices for telephony fall towards zero also they will implement IP2IP in order to save costs. By 2022, up to 90% of the calls will be IP2IP. The author recommends the incumbents and VoIP operators to proactively face the change, to rethink their business strategies, and to even be open for cooperation.
