[en] ELETROCOAGULATION APPLIED TO TREAT SOLUTIONS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATION OF OIL / [pt] ELETROCOAGULAÇÃO APLICADA A MEIOS AQUOSOS CONTENDO ÓLEO

ANTONIO GUTIERREZ MERMA 19 September 2008 (has links)
[en] The separation of emulsions or colloidal particles from wastewater is a major concern for the petroleum, metal manufacturing, food, textile, paper and hydrometallurgy industries. The emulsion present is very stable due to the presence of surfactants, so conventional methods can not be applied and it is necessary to combine one or two treatment processes for highly effective purification. Several techniques have been applied to treat these types of oily wastewater, e.g.: chemical, biological and electrochemical destabilization, ultrafiltration. Electrocoagulation is initiated by the oxidation of sacrificial anodes. The metal ions released combine to the hydroxyl ions produced at the cathode to form the corresponding metal hydroxides and others species, which cause the destabilization of the contaminants or particulate suspensions and form flocs. The bubbles hydrogen gas capturing and floating the flocs formed and separating from the liquid surface by scraping or settling depending on density of the flocs. In this work, the electrocoagulation technique was studied in order to treat concentrated oil-water emulsions chemically stabilized. This study was mainly focused on the effects of operating parameters such as: initial pH, current density, reaction time, NaCl concentration, electrode distance and inlet concentration on the abatement rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The synthetic emulsion was prepared from Shell - Talpa 30 oil (3g.L-1) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (1.0 g.L-1), also was added NaCl (3g L-1) for increasing the conductivity of the emulsion. Under those conditions we had a pH value around 8.70 and a zeta potential around -70mV, showing a good stability of the emulsion.

Silva Júnior, Paulo Roberto Vieira da 19 June 2009 (has links)
In this work a methodology for determination of metallic ions (micronutrients and contaminants), macronutrients and pesticides in soil and natural waters was developed using an Hg plated iridium based ultramicroelectrode and voltammetric techniques, using a ceramic capsule as an electrochemical cell. The measurement procedures were developed initially in controlled conditions and therefore applied to in-situ measurements, in soil and natural waters, performed in lab and with real field samples. Regarding the obtained results it was possible do explore the voltammetric techniques, mainly the pulsed and stripping ones, as tools for in-situ determination of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and the insecticide methyl parathion, with good reproducibility and sensibility, with detection limits in the order of hundreds of parts per billion.

Aspectos do papel do peróxido de hidrogênio como oxidante na atmosfera no contexto das atuais políticas públicas de emissões veiculares / Aspects of hydrogen peroxide role as an oxidant in the atmosphere in the context of current public policies to vehicular emissions

Scaramboni, Caroline 06 April 2018 (has links)
The main objective of this work was to provide insights to better understand how the public policies focused on vehicular emissions, including the use of ethanol fuel, can affect the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most important oxidants in the troposphere and it can participate in reactions with a variety of organic and inorganic compounds. In this work, determination of H2O2, ethanol, acetaldehyde and other organic and inorganic species was carried out in the gas phase, rainwater and surface water. The fluorimetric method based on the formation of the 2, 7-dichlorofluorescein fluorophore was applied for the first time to determine H2O2 in natural water samples (LOD = 2 nmol L-1 and LOQ = 7 nmol L-1). While other methods require the immediate analysis of the sample, in this case, the fluorophore remains stable for about 48 h, facilitating the analyzes and fieldwork. H2O2 concentrations in rainwater of Ribeirão Preto collected between 2014 and 2017 ranged from 5.8 to 96 mol L-1, with a volume-weighted mean (VWM) of 28.9 ± 1.3 mol L-1 (n = 88). The solar radiation was observed to be a more important parameter in the formation of H2O2 than in its consumption. While the VWM concentrations of sulfate (pH <5) and nitrate in rainwater declined by approximately 35% in 2017 compared to 2014, H2O2 concentrations virtually doubled over the same period. The negative correlation between these species shows that national policies aimed at reducing vehicle emissions may modify the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere. Gas phase H2O2, ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations in Ribeirão Preto (RP) and São Paulo (SP) were determined using, for the first time in Brazil, the method of condensate collection. Ethanol concentrations in the atmosphere of RP (15.0 ± 6.6 ppbv, n = 19) and SP (22.0 ± 9.4 ppbv, n = 10) were relatively close, although the SP vehicle fleet is ~ 16 times higher. These ethanol concentrations are about 21 times higher than those reported in the United States due to the high use of ethanol fuel in Brazil. The mean concentrations of H2O2 and acetaldehyde in the atmosphere were, respectively, 2.10 ± 1.46 and 16.3 ± 6.0 ppbv in RP; and 1.29 ± 0.62 and 14.4 ± 5.4 ppbv in SP. Daytime variation showed that while H2O2 concentration increased with solar radiation, ethanol concentration decreased at a rate close to the one of acetaldehyde production. These results indicate that H2O2 may be an important oxidant of ethanol to acetaldehyde in the gas phase, the latter being highly toxic to humans. Fluxes in the air-water interface at the studied sites in RP and SP show that the water body worked as an H2O2 sink. On the other hand, ethanol fluxes were variable, i.e., sometimes invasive and sometimes evasive, with evidence of an important photochemical production of this species in the aquatic environment.

Bui, Van Hoi 27 November 2013 (has links)
The presence of pharmaceuticals was evaluated in Seine surface waters and in eight wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) effluents (4 WWTP within MEDSEINE - GIP Seine – Aval project and 4 WWTP within TOXSTEP – ANSES project. A hundred molecules was systematically reseached in both types of waters by applying the analytical methodologies (SPE solid phase extraction followed by LC-MS/MS analysis). A seasonal monitoring of pharmaceutical residues was also carried out. The pharmaceutically residues have been systematically quantified in this both types of water. The concentrations in suface of waters are significative for some molecules: 1 – 108 ng/L for diclofenac, 2 – 324 ng/L for ibuprofen and the values are weakly for some molecules: 2 – 13 for sulfapyridine, 1 – 5 for nordiazepam. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, β-blockers, macrolides and fluoroquinolones are mostly founded in the effluents of WWTP. Their concentrations were measured in the range: 62 ng/L – 10 µg/L for sotalol, 39 ng/L – 8 µg/L for atenolol, 32 ng/L – up to 127 µg/L for paracetamol. Moreover, the stability of pharmaceuticals was evaluated with light radiation . UV irradiation (at 254 nm) potentially used in the final WWTP before discharge in particularly areas have been applied (with a dose up to 1500 J/m2). Sunlight simulations have also been done. The phenomenon of photodegradation at 254 nm has been observed for some molecules such as : diclofenac, ketoprofen (>90% degraded), ciprofloxacine, norfloxacine (up to 75% degraded). Azithromycinem clarithromycine, carbamazepine and atenolol are most stable molecules observed. Exposing under simulated sunlight, diclofenac, ketoprofen, ciprofloxacine and norfloxacine are also sensitive molecules (>90 % degraded) after 24 hours of exposure (172.8 kJ/m2). Carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, atenolol, metoprolol and bisoprolol are most stable molecules observed.

The use of residual treated waters, besides being a solution economically viable, it is also environmentally maintainable, because it is an effective form of control of the hydric pollution and an alternative to reduce the waste of fresh water in the irrigation process, taking into consideration that, in the world, 70% of the water from the rivers, lakes and aqüíferos is destined to this practice. The objective of the work was to evaluate the use of residual treated waters in the production of caupi-bean (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) and the comparative study with the organic fertilizers. The experiment was accomplished in the facilities of the Agricultural School Assis Chateaubriand/UEPB, municipal district of Lagoa Seca - PB, middle region of the Paraiban Rural and microregion of Campina Grande-PB. The experimental delineament was made, by chance, in blocks, with three ones, each one with 7 treatments and 5 experimental unities and each unity containing three plants. Each experimental unity was formed by a plastic sack, filled out with 10kg of soil. The used treatments were: Treatment (T1): Absolute Testimony (natural soil);(T2): treated drainage originated from a reactor UASB(Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket);(T3): Treated drainage originated from Pond of Polishment;(T4): treated drainage originated from the reactor Chicanas;(T5): Manuring with vegetable remains; (T6): Manuring with composition of the manure; (T7): Manuring with composition of the sewer mud. The results were submitted to the Analysis of variance to diagnose meaningful effects and to the contrast of averages to the assessment of meaningful differences among the treatments. The organic treatments besides being the most productive also had superior indexes in relation to the number of grains and number of green beans. The organic treatments also were indicated as superiors in the production of dry matter, peels, leaves and stem. The values of nitrogen analyzed in the different parts of the caupi- bean, were, in general, also larger in the treatments T5,T6 and T7. The largest tenors of phosphorus in the grains corresponded to those treatments of sanitary nature. There was an increment of the electric conductivity of the extract of saturation of the soil for the treatments of sanitary nature and no increase in the potassium concentrations was proven, calcium and magnesium in the soil, as for the treatments of sanitary nature as for the organic ones after the crop of the plantation. The tenors of phosphorus in the soil were high but with an outstanding supremacy in the treatments which received vegetable rests, compound of bovine manure and sewer s mud. In general, the treatments elevated the saline concentration of the treatments, but not in levels which may commit the caupi-bean s performance.

The relationship between metals and particle size has been also evaluated. To do this, three streets with different traffic load as study area in Goiânia City were selected. The sediments samples were collected in six plots of 0,5 m² located in the central track of the streets during 14 days, collecting samples on 1°, 2°, 3°, 5°, 7° e 14° dry days by the vacuuming and sweeping method. For water sampling two rainfall intensities were selected to be simulated, through a simulated rainfall over an area of 3m², being on low and other high intensity, respectively 25 mm/h and 115 mm/h both with 15 minutes duration. Were simulated three events on the same experimental plot in witch study area and collected 5 water samples during witch rainfall event, which were analyzed by concentration of suspend and dissolved solids, DQO, conductivity and the metals copper, chromium, lead, cadmium, zinc, iron and manganese, determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The results showed that build-up has a strong direct relationship with dray days and an inverse relationship with traffic load. For metals in sediments was verified that the higher concentrations are on particles < 63μm, and follow in general the concentration order Fe > Mn > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd > Cr. The runoff water quality was observed that all the parameters analyzed, except chromium, were detected on selected study areas. The influence of rainfall intensity on wash-off pollutants was observed that this has fundamental importance, so that higher intensity wash-off a higher mass of solids and metals.

In this work it was developed a portable apparatus and automatic analytical procedures for the determination of cations and anions in waters used for human consumption and industrial provisioning. The procedures were based on the multicommutation process in flow analysis and detection was performed using a homemade photometer. The flow systems were designed employing a set of solenoid valves, which were assembled to work as independent commutation units, thus under computer control several solutions were handled using a single pumping channel. The proposed system was controlled by computer running a software wrote in QuickBasic 4.5. The two LED based photometers were developed using as light detection a phototransistor and a photodiode. In both cases, the radiation source (LED) and the photodector were coupled to the flow cell in order to obtain compact unit. The photometer designed using a phototransistor was employed for the sequential determination of nitrate, nitrite, iron(II) and iron(III) in river water. The photometer designed using a photodiode was employed in the system used for the determination of chloride by turbidimetry, phosphate and ammonium by photometry. The flow system was designed associating the multisite and multicommutation process intending reduction of the reagent consumption and waste generation. The useful of the system was proved performing the determination of chloride, ammonium and phosphate in river water. The two proposed systems presented very overall performance including precision and accuracy, analytical frequency and low reagent consumption. Furthermore, the system based on multisite approach presented a very low volume of waster generation. The reduced dimensions of both photometer and flow system module allow their portability, thus we can suggest that the proposed systems are reliable for work in field condition.

Nano-enhanced membrane distillation membranes for potable water production from saline/brackish water / Nano-gefunctionaliseerde membraandistillatiemembranen voor drinkwaterproductie uit zout of brak water

Nthunya, Lebea Nathnael January 2019 (has links)
Abstract in English and German / The reported PhD research study was conceived from real water problems experienced by a rural community in South Africa (SA). Specifically, water quality in the Nandoni Dam situated in the Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa was assessed in order to determine its fitness for use, following complaints by community members using this water for drinking and domestic purposes. The dam supplies water to 55 villages with approximately 800 000 residents. At the inception of the study, there was little scientific information relating to the quality of the water in the dam. Water samples from various sites across the Nandoni Dam, a primary source of domestic water supply in the region, were collected through each season of the year over a period of 12 months to ascertain the concentrations of dissolved salts in the dam. Additionally, harmful polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenols were assessed. The concentrations of the ions contributing to water salinity were generally lower than the brackish water bracket (i.e. 500 – 30 000 mg/L) but too high for potable water. The concentration of the phenols was relatively higher than the threshold limit of drinking water. Therefore, the water sourced from the Nandoni Dam was found not suitable for human consumption and therefore required integrated water resource management, as well as robust and cost-effective water treatment especially since the salinity of the water was high even after treatment by a water treatment plant sourcing water from the dam. In an attempt to develop a suitable energy-efficient technology or system for complete removal of salts (desalination) from the salty water (including brackish water), electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibre membranes were synthesised and evaluated for removal of salts using the Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) process. The nanofibre membranes were synthesised with combined high mechanical stability, porosity, and superhydrophobicity to prevent fouling and wetting while maintaining high salt rejection and water flux. Organically functionalised silica nanoparticles (f-SiO2NPs) were embedded on PVDF nanofibre membranes using an in-situ electrospinning technique for superhydrophobicity enhancement. These modified membranes displayed Young’s modulus of ~43 MPa and showed highly porous properties (~80% porosity, 1.24-1.41 μm pore sizes) with superhydrophobic surfaces (contact angle >150°). Membranes embedded with octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS), and chlorodimethyl-octadecyl silane (Cl-DMOS), octadecyltrimethoxysilane (ODTS)-modified SiO2NPs were the most efficient; rejecting >99.9% of NaCl salt, with a water flux of approximately 30.7-34.2 LMH at 60°C, thus indicating their capacity to produce potable water. The superhydrophobic membranes were coated with a thin layer consisting of carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to reduce membrane fouling. The AgNPs and f-MWCNTs were uniformly distributed with size diameters of 28.24±1.15 nm and 6.7±2.1 nm respectively as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs. The antibacterial AgNPs embedded in the PVDF nanofibre membranes inhibited the growth of Gram-positive Geobacillus stearothermophilus and Staphylococcus aureus as well as Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae indicating their potential to prevent biofilm formation. Fouling tests were conducted using bovine serum albumin (BSA), sodium alginate, colloidal silica, and thermophilic bacteria effluent as model organic, inorganic, and bio-foulants, respectively, using DCMD. The uncoated membranes were characterised by a flux decays ranging from 30% to 90% and salt rejection decays ranging from 1.4% to 6.1%. Membrane coating reduced the flux and salt rejection decays to 10–24% and 0.07–0.75%, respectively. Although the initial flux decreased from 42 to  16 LMH when using coated membranes, the resistance of these coated membranes to water flux and salt rejection decays indicated that coating could be a suitable one-step solution for fouling mitigation in DCMD. The major challenge would be to design the MD membranes with architectures that allow a high-water flux to be maintained i.e., a highly porous layer. Furthermore, the volatile compounds bearing hydrophobic groups were pretreated to reduce their fouling capacity on PVDF nanofibre membranes. In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyethylene-imine (PEI) functionalised-PAN nanofibre membranes were synthesised and evaluated as a pretreatment for the removal of chlorophenol and nitrophenol from solutions. Under optimised experimental conditions, adsorption capacities ranging from 27.3 – 38.4 mg/g for PAN and PEI-modified nanofibres, respectively, were recorded. The PEI-functionalised nanofibres showed a high potential as a pretreatment step to be integrated to MD process. Ultimately an integrated water desalination system was developed. This involved a pretreatment filter (pore size ~100 μm) containing PEI-functionalised PAN nanofibre materials to reduce particulates and large molecules of dissolved organic/inorganic compounds from the water to be treated. In this research, it was observed that the pre-treatment step was not sufficient in removing all traces of compounds causing fouling of the superhydrophobic PDVF nanofibre membranes. As such, coating of the membranes with a thin hydrophilic layer and coupled with the filtration pretreatment step was found to provide fouling-resistance properties, high salt rejection, and low flux decays on brackish water collected at an estuary in Belgium and the Nandoni Dam in South Africa, demonstrating the potential of the MD separation process towards potable water recovery from brackish water. / School of Science / Ph.D. (Applied Biological Science : Environmental Technology)
